And they still hate us. It's comical. If black people don't rock with you we leave your stuff alone but not everyone else. They hate us but still use our cultures
When my ex was teaching in korea, one of her friends was an english teacher from Ghana and for some reason students were nervous around her. Some students were even asking to be transfered out of her class. She couldn't figure it out for the longest till one of her co-workers told here that a racist white teacher whose been teaching at that school longer has been telling students that black people are normally aggressive and violent. She brought it up to her superiors andd guess who got sent to another school an hour away? Not the racist teacher...
I genuinely don't understand why/how black people don't vet people they date/marry. I am asking you all the questions, putting you in front of all the content and watching how you react to everything. If you say anything off par with little to no justification its a no. My black family and black future kids ain't dealing with it.
@@SuperIvashkovL0V I can understand that and respect that. Asians are I don’t want to say racist but let’s say very honest with what they say sometimes. And the reason she put him on such a low place compared to a white man is because in most all Asian cultures and countries White is considered good and Dark is considered poor, filthy and bad/Dangerous
@@SuperIvashkovL0V I imagine being a foreigner and learning the language could have had something to do with it. He lists the things that made him realize the dynamic they had settled into. "I learned Korean, I had jobs, etc" so i imagine when they first met, maybe he DIDN'T know korean well, and didn't have a respectable job. So he might have seen some of her condescending attitude toward him as "kind patience" as he was learning. But then after he accomplished those things, she was still seeing him as lesser. The fact that he compares it to white foreigners makes me think he saw her be more respectful toward white foreigners that were in a worse position than him. But he would have to reach that more confident/established position to be able to see the difference.

I don't think that people realize how much American media harms Black comunities globally. I grew up in a Post-Soviet country and at age 12 have never met a Black person, yet my association with them were the gangs from the movies. Now I realize how wrong it was and how dangerous this stereotypical portrayal really is.
The story about the Korean girl who stood up and defended the girl with the red curls & her friend on the train really shows that there are still good people who are capable of thinking rationally & acting accordingly. It's a positive thing when a complete stranger can take it upon themselves to stand up for someone else & set an example for others to follow. It'd be great if we as a society can open up to each other, be protective of each other, & speak up when they see something that is not right. 9:15 I love & agree with her message at the end. Sad to hear about Sam. I remember how much Koreans loved him, but when he tries to educate them on why discrimination is wrong they switch and try to cancel him. It's disturbing to say the least. It goes right along with the cookie reference the lady with red curls made. He was an entertainment source for Korean TV, but when he doesn't laugh with them for mocking his race they toss him out like old news.💔
Since Asian Boss's mandate was to provide consumption of Asian related content for the world using Asians or people living in Asia, I don't really see why it should provide Korean subtitles for Koreans who don't speak English. They aren't its main audience. There are a lot of videos about these issues made by Koreans for native Koreans. They don't all have English subtitles nor do I expect them to provide it.
Racial remarks made by some people were clearly wrong, and there is no doubt about that. But there were a few reasons sam was criticized by the majority of the korean netizens.
First, when sam openly made racial jestures in the past, the general public just laughed and went over it because they understood that it was not meant to be racist. NOBODY criticized him for that. sam harshly and openly criticizing A few immature highschool students for doing blackface seemed hypocritic to many people.
Second, the ghanan dancers, who were the people the students tried to dress up as, openly approved of the students makeup. Sam aggressively attacking the students when the dancers themselves said it was okay confused many koreans
Third, korea is a EXTREMELY PRIVACY- SENSITIVE country. Koreans don't "openly share someone else's picture" publicly even if that "someone" is a criminal. Sam publicly posting the private info of the students on sns clearly crossed the line. Finally, his manner of addressing the problem was overly aggressive. The students didn't intend to offend black people. They just tried to recreate a meme. Their intentions were obvious. I agree that it still was inappropriate, but sam didn't have to openly criticize them. As a celebrity and a sensible adult, he could have personaly informed them of the problem. Many koreans were offended and flabbergasted by sam's attitude.
"What happened to people saying, sorry." Powerful message that more people should learn. Taking responsibility and accountability for your actions and speech is an important part of being human.

@john 7 yeah that’s an exaggeration. all i’ve ever seen is asian men fetishizing black women on the internet. & i’ve also seen plenty black girl and asian guy couples.
I loved hearing the Afro-Mexican women's perspective. I'm glad she brought up the fact that everyone is focusing on the USA but these issues happen everywhere
@@makayla6956 Yeah if you think about it most countries experienced slavery one way or the other. Also, yes countries in the Caribbean experienced a lot of slavery and unfortunately lost part of their cultures because of colonists.
In some countries, slavery still exists. My mom lived in Libya for 1 year , she was shocked at how they treat black people and south east Asians. They were kidnapped, tortured and treated as if they aren't humans. And it's still happening today, unfortunately we don't hear anything about it in the news, and only small organisations are taking action. (sorry if I made any mistakes, English isn't my first language)
As a Korean (who lived in the states), I had very complicated feelings about what happened to Sam. First of all, as shocking as this may sound, the general public in Korea at that time didn't know that blackface was considered a racist act. Blackface is seen as an offensive act due to how it was used historically to belittle black people in the US (by the white people), but many Koreans didn't know. Koreans feel offended when they see the Japanese rising sun flag but many people who do not know the history use it as a decoration, and I'm sure there are many people who still do not know about this. We all assume people would know and be more considerate about what offends us culturally but it is impossible to know everthing from the start. It would have been nice if Sam had used a softer tone when telling the high school students that it's not appropiate and is considered offensive to the black community. The biggest part to why the Korean community got heated was how he wrote his angry thoughts in only English and called out the racism in Korea when he himself had times when he made ignorant and racist comments towards Koreans in the past. I really hate racism as a past victim, but we should try explaining to eachother what offends us and not resort to anger right away. I was called names and children made slit eye gestures when I was in the states when I was little, but I don't think all these acts were the result of pure hatred or animosity. There weren't many asians where I lived so I'm sure they didn't know better. We just need to communicate better.
"I'd rather you have no perspective, meet us, and then make your opinion, rather than look at all these things you see in the media and have a negative stereotype about what we do and who we are" 👏👏👏👏👏👏 its 2021,and I've been so dumfounded by how people STILL make racial assumptions before even meeting those individuals. That's a movie character, this is real life y'all !!
Y'all need to put Korean subtitles. This message should be for the Korean people who are racist to Black people. The Black Mexican interviewer said it themselves that Korean people need to take a look at the racism in their own country and within their community and selves first and foremost bc if they don't it's really just virtue signaling. Please add Korean subtitles so they can hear us.
Asian Boss: two of the people being interviewed in the video, Kymberly Eyo and Brown Beauty Abroad, said in this comment section that they got cut out when saying important things. The editor of this video really wanted a specific, convenient narrative right? (making black people in Korea look like they're playing the victim) Disappointing of you. Also why not put korean subtitles in this? What good could a racism conversation in a country do, without being addressed to the ACTUAL members of that country? Be clear with your intentions, because people who come to this channel want truth, not your version of it. Let black people speak their whole truth when asking a question. And not what is convenient for a narrative (a narrative that harms black people by twisting the portrayal of their stories).

When I was in Korea, there was this korean guy in hongdae that approached me and my friends saying that he was an youtuber and asking to film us. We were ok with that and things started funny but then he looked at me, touched my hair and said "오오 이거 좀 봐... 라면 머리!" (Oh look at this, ramen hair) While laughing. I was soo shocked that couldn't say anything, but my friend got pissed and said him that that wasn't funny at all, that was rude and asked him to delete that footage. I mean... at that moment I couldn't think straight, i was just overwhelmed and my mind went blank. But after the situation sank in.... geez.
I'm so sorry for your experience. There haven't been many foreigners until recent years and people are not taught what's rude or not in school so it mostly stems from ignorance. Korea is a very homogeneous society and I hope people are more aware of different cultures but the reality is they don't really have any sense of how you should act toward people with different cultures. You know, these kinds of people always exist around the world. Please don't generalize all south Koreans are like that. There are definitely people who are more aware of these things. I hope things are changing and more emphasis on diversity is put in our education, but things actually got worse after corona.
i’m sorry that incident happened to you. please don’t judge all korean people from his example. he was rude and inconsiderate. lots of korean people are more sensitive, and if they are curious about your hair, they will ask you in a respectful manner. some older people might make insensitive remarks, but it isn’t because they are trying to be insensitive or insult you. for lots of them it is because they really don’t know better.
When I heard the story of how a Korean woman on the subway stood up for the foreign women and told the guy off in front of everyone, I was SO HAPPY! We need more of this! Just like she mentioned, as a foreigner u can represent all foreigners (since there are so few), and one angry reaction (even if justified), can have a negative affect on Koreans mindset of foreigners. But when a Korean stands up for you, everyone around will really listen to the situation and take sides against the perpetrator.
I was quite surprised and encouraged to hear that part. Koreans usually just mind their own business and don't get involved in virtually any situation.

I’m a Black American and I lived in Korea from 2014-2017. Most of my experiences were positive and I enjoyed living there. I’d break it down like this (for me): 70% of the people I encountered were just every day people, nice and accepting. About 15% were REALLY curious about me and welcoming. I felt like a celebrity! But then there were about 15% of people who were out and out racist (from all ages and genders). So, most of the people were really good to me and I appreciated it. I came to the realization that anti-blackness is global, but so is an appreciation of Black culture(s). I figure the best thing I can do is my part in helping the world escape their ignorance through education and being a decent human being.
@Dee Thank you! It's actually a really great place to live. You just have to develop thick skin and not let yourself get bitter. If you focus on the mostly positive experiences then it helps put the negative ones in perspective.
The world is anti-everything. Not everyone, but you get the point. I'm Spanish-Moroccan and since both countries are diverse, there is ironic racism against anyone from a different region in the same country. Of course, not everyone is like that, but it's insane. Growing up in my African(Zambian) home, I was taught to respect all people and if I encountered a foreigner, I was reminded to go out of my way to make them feel welcome. "It's hard enough being away from the familiar," was reiterated often enough to have the words stuck in my mind to this day.... Several years later. I've been to Asia and I lived in India for the most part... For a year. I had to endure people touching my hair and asking for pictures when I wore my curls in a fro. I smiled through all the prodding; humouring them because I was taught to always be polite and I understand that many people are genuinely curious and wish to learn about different races and/or cultures. The very least I expected was to be extended the same courtesy I showed to others. Life isn't that simple, huh?😅 I do not want to sound like the only reason I strive to be nice is so that people can be nice to me, too. Far from it. I should want to be nice on my own irrespective of people's response to my actions. To this day, I do not understand why the shade of my skin or the texture of my hair would make people hate me. I would understand it all better if they despised my actions rather than things I can hardly alter. To despise an individual is understandable but to despise an entire race of people because of presuppositions and their features..... It sounds absurd to me. We can't keep living like this... Stifling people even now... In 2021! We're all humans. Can't we just live as human beings?
It was fine. I truly enjoyed myself and when people stared, I understood that it was because I looked different. Some of the friends I made would ask questions about my hair for example and they genuinely seemed curious. At the mall, some people were courageous enough to ask for pictures. I humoured them without delving into the reason why they wanted the pictures. On the negative, there were some people..... Mostly the older people.... Who would stare and make unpleasant expressions and then proceed to say something I could not understand. I ignored them😅 They didn't know me and I thought.... And still think..... that they have ideas ingrained in them about what I'm supposed to be like. I won't make them think differently by reacting to every unpleasant gesture.

As a Korean I'm so sorry about black people who have bad experience in Korea. but also I feel like asian boss want to make black people as a victim in korea. Kymberly Eyo and Brown Beauty Abroad (interviewee in this video) said in this comment section and their channel that asian boss cut out their diverse mention about korea. It's really wrong that interviewee said the good and the bad at the same time, but only pick the bad one. I'm really appreciate that asian boss point out my country's problem especially racism. but I think they should send truth and be careful to send biased nuance. because even I think asian boss rather making discrimination against black people in korea. Korea is not yet familiar with foreigners, so there is no fundamental hatred for any foreigners, including blacks. However, some media keep saying that Koreans fundamentally hate black people, and such things are being passed on to Korea too. It conveys the perception that "Koreans hate black people" to Koreans who do not yet have a special perception about black people. I know there is a racial problem in our country, and I think our people should study about it. But there is a need to emphasize more positive aspects about black people to countries especially that have yet to be identified about black people. Identity is created unconsciously. Therefore, media should not let Koreans unconsciously perceive that black people are discriminated against in Korea. Rather, it is important to make Korean recognize black people as harmonious with Koreans. If you try to reject it after negative perceptions have already been created, you will end up failing like racism in the United States. Once again, I apologize to foreigners who have experienced inconvenience in Korea. As a member of Korea, I will try not to have such a problem in Korea anymore. sorry for my bad english.

I went to Seoul, South Korea in 2018 and I had a lot of fun but I’m not sure that I want to go back after hearing about how much some Koreans hate and look down on dark skin people. I love and respect the Korean people and their culture; it’s very hurtful to me that Koreans think less of me just because of my race and skin color rather than the content of my character. It’s just very unfair.
Food for thought: many Korean ppl living in Korea look down upon fellow Koreans who are dark tanned because they're looked as farmers/peasants. I think many Koreans fetishize pale skin. Just saying.
Who told you that? Why foreigners ask me whether koreans hate dark skin people thesedays? Do not listen to the rumor and Follow your heart. There is no need for Koreans to hate black people(young people think you are cool)
As a Korean, I deeply apologize on the behalf of those Korean people who look down on people with darker skin.......I just hope people aren't so racist and rude to one another 😢
I've visited china, japan and korea. I had the best time in Japan and surprisingly in China too. China has a lot of black students in their universities compared to other asian universities. I can't say this country isn't racist or is. Japan just seems to know how to treat foreigners right. China attracts foreigners all over the world. Even though korea is developed now. It takes years for people's mindsets to change. I think for us black people we need to stop waiting for people to accept us. If they don't respect you or don't see you as human. Then don't bother wasting your time.
I don't know why people think of Korea are being the "worse" of the three. There was literally a commercial in China throwing a black man in the laundry and then a white man appears as the clean laundry. There's never been a commercial like that in Korea. I know you'll probably bing up black face, but all that's been done in both China and Japan as well. misunderstandingsthoughIsituation, they won't accept it and stubbornly maintain their position. I lived in Korea for 3.5 years starting from 2012. I would say while I did experience racism/ignorance from people there, my overall quality of life was better in Korea than in the USA. In fact when I came back to the States, I was depressed for a couple of years and really wished I could have stayed in Korea, but I was hitting a roadblock there career-wise. Some of that was due to race, but the other part was wanting to have either other types of teaching opportunities (like teaching adults) or a decent paying job outside of teaching. If I had the opportunity, I would move back. It’s unfortunate that we sometimes have to experience negativity and ignorance in order to have that better way of life, but until society as a whole finally gets it right, it’s going to be that way for a long while. Also, I lived in Spain for a bit before moving to Korea, so that prepared me for what I experienced in Korea.

sam spoke out on Koreans racist behaviours and as a response they showed their true colours by calling him slurs and racially degrading him
Racial remarks made by some people were clearly wrong, and there is no doubt about that.

Sure, there is ethnic and cultural rivalry, but racism in generell is just pointless. If little kids, innocent little angels, get along with each other just fine, then we grown ups do something horribly wrong.
Same experience as an Asian in the US. One of the most frustrating things is that most of the racism I received came from minorities. I'm like "what? you should know better."

Life isn't that simple, huh?😅
I do not want to sound like the only reason I strive to be nice is so that people can be nice to me, too.
How was your experience in India? Plz be honest.
I ignored them😅
They didn't know me and I thought....

Aww thanks for shouting me out! I just posted a video of my positive experience if you want to see :)
they did say that they had mostly positive experiences with being black in korea, they just wanted to black people to speak on the racism they've experienced because it is not talked about very much..
I agree to what you saying but not entirely cos personally I don't think Sam was making blacks victim in Korea cos if he wasn't being victimised he wouldn't have said or done anything he did
Thank you for your kind message. It's unfortunate how people have misperceptions of each other, but I will be visiting Korea in the fall and I am definitely looking forward to it!😊
It's not about making anyone a victim. It's about what black people go through all over the world. Sorry, this may offend you, but we go through this all over the world.

You need to trust your own experience and not let others invalidate that. People are allowed to have different experiences.
Obviously, doesn't mean racism doesn't exist in Korea. But believing that Korea is worse than both China and Japan is just ridiculous.

They likely don't care about actually reaching Koreans with this message. They only seem to care about pandering to Black people who want to visit Korea. We see videos like this time and time again being posted by channels like this, and without Korean subtitles.

The one lady was spot on when saying that each country needs to deal with their own discriminatory issues. Like every country on Earth is going to have discrimination towards a certain group of people just because they are different in one way or another then the majority. All we can do is make sure we don't do discriminatory things and be in control of ourselves.

I'm glad I finally watched this video. I was almost about to reconsider South Korea to teach ESL. I consistently hear about these horrible experiences of Black people. No, thank you!
The difference is, racist people in the US kill while in South Korea, they just stare, mock and laugh but don't shoot.
Well we should not dismiss the fact that black people from Western countries like USA, UK, France are incredibly racist and hostile towards Asian looking people as well so I don't think they should have any right to complain even if they face racism in Asian countries.
@@Khmerwarrior200 1. I can complain about whatever I choose to. 2. Black people can't be racist... prejudice, yes. Don't forget to mention the other races that shoot up the place. She's made videos about immigration, paperwork, safe areas to settle, employment, etc.
the "ddong" hair just means bun in korean. its not specifically directed to black people and to call their hair poop. ddong mulee is used by every korean and it literally just means a hairbun. if i put my hair in a bun, my parents would say "ddongmulee haenae" which means you put your hair in a bun. it has nothing to do with race
Agree. Clarifying to prevent misinformation & not to take away from the important issues raised. Attributing ddong mori to only black hair buns is incorrect. Koreans use it to refer to twisted hair buns in general.
Ah, if that's true then it is unfortunate miscommunication/cultural misunderstanding. It's hard though, because if they wers being shady about it then it probably was used in a negative way. Growing up, there's always been negative associations with black hair so she probably thought it was what they were insinuating as well.

appalling but not surprising. The hospital incident shared by the Mexican speaker needs to be addressed IN A LAWSUIT. Feel awful you all had to go through that.
