  • This truck is going to unlock a whole new world of adventure... I found my DREAM truck for sale and flew halfway across the country to buy it, sight unseen. I take you on that trip with me, and share why this is my dream truck, and what the heck I plan to do with it. Big and fun plans ahead!

Just found your channel last night, and you kept me up all dang night watching..The fact that you already figured out life by living in a bus, having a great dog, and knowing that Toyotas are the most dependable vehicle out there make you even cooler! I pretty much embarked on the same journey in spring 2020. My Mom died of stage 4 cancer just weeks before her planned retirement of traveling the country. That inspired me to put off work and see the places she never go to. I bought a little Toyota RV and boy did i drive, 65K in three summers seeing 45 states. Theres something so visceral about seeing the country all by yourself, makes you realize whats really important in life. Anyways you do amazing work! Maybe someday i can meet someone like you!

Awesome!! I'm an overland guy and have been watching your channel for a couple years. So cool you're giving this a go. Yes, great vehicle. Make sure you change all fluids in the differentials and transfer case and check their breather tunes. If the previous owner did water crossings, your likely to find water in the diffs.
    Anyway, excited for you. 😊

Best truck ever! I recently sold my 1995 Toyota Tacoma 4 x 4. I owned it for over 20 years and it never needed any replacement parts except for one starter! During all those years I pulled kayak trailers full of kayaks, remodeled my house, hauled literally tons of rocks, three to five cords of wood every year and the thing ran like a top, handled like a sports car on the highway. I operated snow removal equipment in the Tahoe winters and that little truck got me to work, over the summits in 3 to 5 foot snow storms every time! I now have a 2500 sprinter van 4 x 4 and have just toured Alaska, Canada and now the US but I will purchase another Toyota someday. Good luck with yours, it’s awesome, great choice!

Alyssa, As soon as you said you mentioned that you were going to do a conversion, build out - the idea hit me! I'll put some of my ideas out there and use whatever you like, if any of it at all. I would look into one of those aluminum truck bed pull-outs. Or build your own to fit your needs. This would be where you place your mattress. You can then sleep inside or use the pull out bed during the nice weather days and make a custom fabric tent to attach to the rear hatch to keep you away from those nasty mosquitos, flies and whatnot and still keep you dry should it rain while you are sleeping. I have more ideas to go along with the pull-out bed idea - to make it all work. Ideas that would provide you with plenty of useful storage and other amenities, like one of those refrigerator freezer combos with dual lid compartments that run on 12v DC or 120v AC. (I happen to have and use the F40C4TMP 56Qt model myself. Not sure if it is still available.) Feel free to reach out to me or the MRS if you would like to hear any more ideas. She watches you on Instagram. I'm on here and FB only. All the best, Tony

We match! I have a white 97 and hope to get from Georgia all the way to the Pacific Northwest one of these days. I highly recommend you replace all fluids, get the upper intake manifold pulled and all carbon buildup removed. Replace all your vacuum lines and pull the EGR valve and clean it. Very important, get someone to inspect your main wire harness where it comes in close proximity to the EGR valve and then get it wrapped with a heat resistant tape. Enjoy and I look forward to seeing your adventures in the 80!

Few tips: I have had 3. I’m on my third and best one. It’s a tripple locked LX450 (97 Land Cruiser with Lexus badging and cladding). So, first thing, get manuals. They aren’t cheap. It’s a two books. I think Absolute Wits End sells them now. That’s a good sight for accessories, parts, etc for 80s. Also, lot of fake China parts out there, from big deal stuff, to belts. Get genuine. Order from a reputable site or just go to Toyota dealership parts center. Two common things with these, is the seal on the oil pump leaks. This is an easy fix, but you have to take stuff off. Then the big thing is head gasket. If this truck has and old or original head gasket, just get it replaced. If it goes, it tends to hydrolock the engine, which is catastrophic failure. Use Toyota fluids, like coolant. If you maintain it, it will last last and last. ARB bumpers are the best, super strong. Keep it. I know these aren’t cheap anymore. I sold my last one for 10 grand and picked up the LX450 for 7 grand. These days my LX450 in stock form would be 15 grand. A lot of people are catching on to these trucks. Nice truck. Hope you give us a little more of what’s been done to it. Suspension. Etc.

The 90's really was a golden age for Toyota 4WDs. I have a 93 Hilux Surf (what you guys would call a 4Runner but with a manual gear box and turbo diesel). All the mods done to your 80 so far are top of the line stuff too. Who ever built that truck wasn't cutting corners. If you're going to use that snorkel to get wet, make sure the airbox is sealed and you've added diff breather extensions, two things a lot of people don't know they have to do alongside the snorkel for river crossings.

I would advise you to buy some NEW ball joints and have them ready...and possibly a new U-joint too-- just to have as spares-- because off-roading those are your weakest spots nad most likely to break if anything ever does- and if you have them WITH you- will save you a fortune in the long run. I would suggest a belt or two- and some other BASIC spare parts for emergencies.. GREAT VEHICLE.... glad you got it-- and good luck to you-- and again- LOVE that gorgeous smile of the joy your feeling!!! Stay safe. and Bless you.

Hi Lyss Glad you brought an 80 series, just a friendly, the fix you did is only dealing with a symptom, not the cause and having the breathing hoses open in the engine bay is a fire hazard, in my experience a charcoal canister which deals with fumes and recycles them thru the intake won't cause an issue, there is a set of pipes on the fuel tank for breathing and equalising that will need to be checked and cleaned, part of the emission controls you have in the states. Enjoy your truck, your future adventures sound great Kia ora from NZ (Landrover the best 4X4 by far)

I loved my FJ80. Had it for years, put in many adventurist miles. At that time I lived in Topanga Canyon and Specter Off Road is straight down 27 in Canogo Park. If you ever have trouble finding a part check them out. In the back county steeps it's the closest thing to a snow cat on 4 tires. (That can also be a daily driver). It didn't go fast up Loveland pass but it really is more of a tractor.
P.s. If you ever have problems with power steering replace the fluid reservoir before the pump. Keep grease in those knuckles and they will never fail. Enjoy!

Hi Alyssa I wanted to drop a piece of advice on using the winch that you never seem to see on TV or in Videos.
    When you are winching (or towstrapping) something heavy enough where the cable has any chance of breaking;
put a coat or a blanket or similar item over the center of the cable when ready to pull. This way if it breaks the item
will act a sail and dissipate some of the energy, and can prevent damage and injury. I don't know why you don't see
this (on TV or vids) as it was the first bit of advice from my 4x4 club upon getting a winch. And it makes great sense.
Remembering to do that, and learning how to spool are key to safety. I'm sure you have many good advisors so I'm
    just throwing out that one.
BTW my jeep club is represented on the moon. There is a sticker from our club(s) on the moon rover. It was developed
in Goleta (Santa Barabara) Where I grew up, so club members worked on it. Si if you ever go wheelin' on the moon.... 🌛

I was just thinking the same thing. Throw a coat over your winch line. And stay low if in the drivers seat while winching yourself out. They are seriously dangerous if the cable breaks.

A true beauty (both ;) ). TLC 80 reliability is beyond anything, when I was living in Siberia 80s proved that it can survive everything (winter time is like -55 -60 for couple of months, -45 is normal winter weather; summer time +40), my pals have TLC with over 300k miles on it, some even went over 500k without any major repairs.
I’m personally drive TLC 80 96 though no hardcore as mountains or forest, just a plain road though I have it as a soul car so it wasn’t been driven in winter time and have mileage of 57k km (35k miles).

Congrats an awesome choice, I recall my series 80 fondly I had a 1995 Blue Marlin edition that came with an extended fuel tank and a few extras, loved driving it although it was heavy on fuel.
Funny how a girl on her own still needs another reason to be independent.......I've spent the last 12 years on my own and I can say unequivocally it's so much more when shared and witnessed, especially the feel, smell, sound and taste of it all.

I Love Your New Overland Rig, And Only wanted to Offer 2 Suggestions For It
1/ Look Into A Dual Battery System That'll Isolate To Keep One For Your Accessories And Can Double Up Automatically For Winching And Starting...
2/ If Your Winch Line Needs Replacing You Would Be Truly Happy To Look At Yankum Winch Ropes and A Matching Fairlead That Doesn't Leave Any Hook Out Front To Snag Or Catch On.....
All The Best With Your Great New Rig !!

I owned an 80's series landcruiser she was the best, the one I had was top of the range having all the bells and whistles and drove like a dream. I even had a guy off to clean swop me his brand new off the show room floor model 4x4 back in 2010 and I thanked him but said no as I loved my baby. Her name was La,la lol. Sadly I no longer have her but sure do miss her.

Welcome to the wonderful world of off roading and overlanding!! We need more strong educated women in this community! We are a family of Toyotas, 5 currently and always adding more. We are on the hunt for a west coast 80 series Land Cruiser, I say it will complete our collection. We have a 4 runner with all Land Cruiser running gear aka the Land Runner 😂 but it’s our dream to have the 80 series for camping with enough room for us and our 3 dogs. This truck is truly a find! Can’t wait to see what you make her!!

I have had that dream before too but glad I woke up & got some advise from a friend who races off road. I took jis advice & bought the SUV to build up & happy I did. A full size Bronco it is or was old it is maybe or close the originnal full sixe 4x4 SUV wit Twin Traction beam independent front suspension It built by me mostly in my grage. Now it is what they call a luxury prerunner the super truck/SUV for off road gears & lockers get where you want in large tires with a built drivetrain & internal ballenced big V8 motor 75 MPH over 3 foot whoops without spilling your cofee & landing smooth as you could imagine after over a surprise at higer speed 6-8 feet in the air is what I dream of & happy to have permagrin on King shozks ever time I am off Road.

They make a great drawer system and many other useful and very robust products for the LC. Happy travels and enjoy your LC.

A lot of work went into installing those manual front hubs. No 80 series came with manual hubs...because they're all full time 4WD. Now, if your manual hubs are installed correctly, you no longer have a locking diff in your transfercase. Your center diff lock button will function as your part time to full time 4WD engagement.

Vow . 🥰🥰. What a nice 80. I just flew 2 weeks ago to San Jose CA , Picked up a Stock Rust Free White 96 LX450 with 230K miles from a private party and drove back to Philly. What a drive that was. 3000 miles. No Hiccups. It's a Legend. I am guessing you paid a nice chunk 💰 for the 80. It's built with purpose. You will definitely enjoy the 80.

Love Land Cruiser recognized the interior right away. Since that vehicles coming from Sacramento, and it is going to Colorado where they salt the roads, recommend a good under coating as soon as possible and maintain the frame, body, doors, so that it doesn't start rusting.
