    What makes Joe so tragic for me, is that he has all the qualities of actually being a good and desirable man. He’s handsome, intelligent, charming and would obviously go the extra mile for his lover. Unfortunately, he takes it way too far and becomes obsessed. If he wasn’t crazy, a lot of women in the show would be vying for him.

      What I found odd about his character: for someone who professed such 'love' for his partners (first Beck, then Love), he seems incredibly unfazed/unhurt by their eventual rejection of him. (That lack of affect/inability to 'feel' is, of course, a trait of sociopaths.)

      @@carlitobrigante330 I think it's bc in his mind he's already rationalized his way out of feeling regret or guilt by telling himself that all his decisions are for really good reasons. So it helps numb him of emotional responses. I honestly thought that aspect of his was odd when it came to Love. The more you invest into a person, the harder it is to unravel your connections with them, no matter the power of your own rationalizations

    He has a high IQ and is good at manipulating people. He also unfortunately manipulates himself into self delusion that his next "crush" is perfect. Even the most simple minded people can see through faults of the women he's obsessed with. But somehow despite how smart he is overlooks this in the same way over and over and over. It's baffling he cannot see the pattern of repetition he's going through by season 3. There's zero self reflection ability in Joe. This tv show could have 100 seasons where he keeps seeking out damaged women thinking they are perfect and I bet on season 100 he still wouldn't have realised it. That part of his brain must be missing.

      Actually he does have a bit of self awareness in season 2 and most importantly in season 3. He has some good development imo, in season 3 he’s trying to be better and his kill count significantly reduced. And the thing he does at the end was very good development I think

    its also important to note hes not that smart, i think most viewers are influenced by how hesees things through his narrative rather than what actually happens. hes constantly reckless about his cover ups and fucks up many times. he doesnt fake very well, multiple characters have found him odd or weird or were able to caught up an off vibe from him, he also refuses to adapt which makes it more apparent theres something off with him. he usually his rationalization may influence the viewer to think hes a genius or something lol. he also doesnt "see the truth" he just makes a bunch of assumptions based on pictures or gestures or specific moments.

      Exactly, when I first heard him narrating and judging everyone for having a facade, him being a chameleon to literally every person he needs to manipulate was the biggest facade. He acted smart, but stalking isn’t a specialized skill, he’s just obsessed and most people aren’t stalkers who analyze everyone. It’s funny he judges people and acts like their facade is annoying but was a hypocrite. That’s why before the 1st episode finished I didn’t understand how “you” was popular. Cliche, cliche. Kind of like how people say Ted bunny was charming and attractive, they make joe a knock off version, even then bundy I didn’t find to be either of those things

    • @youngnastyman
      @youngnastyman 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I don’t really see it as a desire for perfection, in fact I think it’s the opposite. He doesn’t want perfect he was someone to fix. It’s stems from his mother who was obviously far from perfect. Beck was a mess, he obsessed over Love until she accepted everything about him and Marianne had baggage stacked to the moon. When his marriage was working out fine is when his eyes drifted.
      This is just my interpretation however.

    • @ZombieFoodReviews
      @ZombieFoodReviews 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@youngnastyman Very good observation. I agree with you. I think ultimately by having that need to fix them, Joe sabotages himself because in fixing them it is not about them, it's all about him! He is extremely self-destructive, but not in an obvious sense. Physically and mentally he always preserves himself. He is witty, charming and a generally likeable dude in social scenarios, but as soon as you peel away a couple of layers, that is who Joe is. He is cunning and acutely narcissistic. What I want to see is somebody try to fix Joe. Joe's always trying to change somebody else. I wonder if we will see a character try to change Joe, without giving him a choice. Joe is yet to find a woman that genuinely loves him.

    To quote Perks of Being a Wallflower, "we accept the love we think we deserve"
    Joe's psych and sociopathy derive from his earlier childhood traumas and experiences, as many people would put that he has "mommy issues", he's only searching for the love and affection he feels he deserves from the lack, and over compensates for this when he feels he's stumbled onto it and will do anything to save it, but it is also a self delusion as well.

      @@yanieelidrissi2562 "Research studies have proven that there is no link between kids who behave aggressively toward other kids and low self-esteem. In fact, psychologists have found that kids who behave like bullies have high self-esteem, but that they are very "shame-prone." That means they are afraid their failures or shortcomings will be exposed. A person can have problems with shame and still have high self-esteem, and this is what makes a person act like a bully. Their mean behavior toward others keeps their self-esteem high because it takes their own and others' attention away from the parts of themselves about which they are ashamed." - Mary C. Lamia Ph.D.
      "Psychologists used to believe that bullies have low self-esteem, and put down other people in order to feel better about themselves. While many bullies are themselves bullied at home or at school, new research shows that most bullies actually have excellent self-esteem. Bullies usually have a sense of entitlement and superiority over others, and lack compassion, impulse control and social skills. They enjoy being cruel to others and sometimes use bullying as an anger management tool, the way a normally angry person would punch a pillow. Research does support the fact that bullies have low empathy, and they really don’t know how it feels to be in someone else’s shoes."
      There are many other studies that support this but this was sourced from an article in psychology today. Not to say there aren't insecure bullies but it's in no way a majority or a rule of thumb. They are in no way victims in most cases and even if they were their treatment of others is not acceptable in light of any past experiences.

      Every person on the planet hides behind a fake mask. Who they want the world to see. Not who they are. The only question is why? For most its to hide a vulnerability. For the personality disorders its to hide the nothing/monster underneath. We ALL have masks we wear but 98% of the population can't see its a mask cause they can't see through the mask. An INFJ for example is hardwired to pick up on bodylanguage, patterns in behaviour, the cause and effect of feelings. And we always get clues that don't fit the mask. We see through the mask. And the beautiful part is when we then treat people as we see them not as the mask wants us to treat them...people open up quite naturally to us. They don't hide from us cause they CAN'T hide from us.
      Same goes for the personality disorders. They like to manipulate and trick people. They like digging holes for others to fall into. I can see them digging. But they can't see that I see. I believe the punishment should fit the crime and I practice the emotional/social variant of Judo (a gentler way of fighting back using your opponents strength against them while preserving your own energy). So I pretend I don't see them digging. Than when they try to push me into the hole they will realise I flipped the board on them and they themselves end up in the hole. Usually mad at me for throwing them into the hole. "Uhh you jumped in, you dug that hole yourself and technically I didn't know there was a hole to begin with didn't I".😈 Treat others as you want to be treated buddy. Also dominating an infj is useless....they are sigma and don't do group pressure. Honey I am not part of the group, I am temporarily socialising with the group....there is a difference. 😃

      It's usually down to how much self esteem you have. People like Joe tend to gaslight and guilt trip people a lot, a person who knows their own self worth (even an empath) would realize that and stay away from them.

I’m a charismatic guy and have no trouble courting women, however it seems that surface level connection far as I’m capable of going. I’ve been broken up with because a girl felt as though she “didn’t know me.” It’s a pattern with multiple partners where I basically don’t open myself to them.

      In this book, Joe simirarily falls in love with a librarian, known as Mary Kay. Mary Kay also has a kid, but is way older (I think she was 17-18?)
      Joe isn't in love with Love anymore (obviously) and stalks her instagram only because of his kid

    The irony and pitfall of your perspective is to believe that his perspective is objective. He was highly judgmental and only assumed to know something about those people without having enough information for most of the claims he makes about the people he observes. He also doesn't bother to test his asumptions. He just seems to assume he is right because he thinks he is smarter and better than everyone else. I can't rember it perfectly because it has been a while since I watched the show, but as far as I remember he was wrong many many times with the assumptions he made which got him and people around him into a lot of trouble many times.

      He is very observant and he pays a lot of attention, but his conclusions are highly subjective, but because he actually takes the time to pay better attention to what is happening is a useful thing to do and therefore the advice of doing that is valid and useful.
      Also being in the mids of season 3 now shows me that so far he can get himself out of trouble and find one (not the best necessarily) solution to prevent being caught even though he screwed up. Is that really what he wants or is it what he feels like he needs to do to survive and what was it he really got when he wanted it and did he really wanted what he thought he wanted?

    I thought this was correct but if you rewatch this show, you quickly realize the show tricks you into believing he’s much better at these things than he is. If you keep track of all of his moments of convince I call it, he loses almost every time. He almost never wins his way in conflict moments. At one point I had him at 2 for 28 on getting his way when conflict was central. It’s why he’s forced to resort to actual violence and tricks. And his true genius is an ability to stay in social circles he’s rejected by. This is uncommon, and allows that silent observation stance combined with a genuine desire to always appear as the perfect boyfriend to elevate his status in combination with always acting on confirmed knowledge.

    As someone that pretty much does this exactly, besides killing people. You’re spot on all the points but miss the fact that it’s basically unconsciously but more a conscious effort to reaffirm his fantasy inside his head. These people aren’t to be played but are just objects masquerading as people for him to have the life he wants. Then he rationalizes why something happens when a person isn’t “performing” is out of the narcissistic fantasy in his head. Rather than accounting for probability that said thing can go wrong. Biggest thing is that he comes to a realization he’s chasing a figure in his head not really a person then has outrage when he’s not getting what he wants.
    Personally I’ve never related more to a character because I thought this is what everyone does nowadays with the free information given to us by social media. There’s nothing wrong with understanding he world around you to get what you want.

    Pretty much why I enjoyed watching this show. However, I do beg the question, as someone who tends to listen and adjust a lot offline to people, I do question how Joe is able to be so easily liked by his target love interests. In my opinion, adjusting to your surroundings to fit in and observe makes you quite unnoticeable and bland. People will like you maybe cause you don't take the spotlight from them and offer them the chance to shine and do the talking. But isn't what makes someone interesting and appealing their ability to be unapologetically themselves ? It is also more enjoyable and less draining, I tried it, at the expense of not censoring myself and being less careful. It's true though, people will be rubbed wrong by it or use it against you... if they are shitty assholes. But I was in the wrong group... the right group is hard to find personally.. isn't the people that allow you to be safely yourself amongst them the people you consider the best?
