Cars now are immensely heavier than they were 100 years ago. Even though modern materials are lighter, the safety features required by law are bulky and heavy themselves, but it also means bigger frame and even more weight. Over time electric motors have only improved in efficiency a small amount compared to the efficiency of gains of internal combustion. The result is the average mile per kWh for EVs is lower now than 100 years ago because of weight, but the mpg of gas and diesel cars are a little bit better now than they were in spite of the increased weight (even excluding hybrids). For example my nearly 20 year old Buick has the same MPG as a model T ford even though it weighs nearly 3 times more

the steering mechanism is called a TILLER. Much like a boat, the Tiller controls the steering of the vehicle. A rudder is connected to a Tiller in a boat, the linkage is connected to a tiller in an Auto-Mobile. The linkage is connected to the front wheels so that when you move the Tiller, it turns the wheels. Steering bar would have been more correct than Rudder. I'm surprised Jay didn't explain that to you. He has done several videos on the Baker apparently. Oh, that lovely trim work in the upholstery is called Carriage lace. Yeah, at that time Auto-Mobiles were more than half a Carriage. In fact in Europe they were called Motor-Carriages. LOVED this! Thank you for posting it!

They look very different to us because of the outer shape! Otherwise they're fundamentally the same as modern day electric cars! These were marketed as horseless carriages hens the shape!

Cars were his passion since he was a kid long before he got famous. He got suspended from High School back in Massachusetts for doing burn outs in the school parking lot.
Even with his wealth, he's reasonable about wanting to drive his cars and not treat his collection as a bunch of assets. He's against owning a Ferrari because he hates the dealer-culture of being given "the privilege" to own a Ferrari.
He's awesome when it comes to cars but not when it came to the tonight show lol. He screwed over letterman and conan to be able to afford that amazing collection. Moral of the story is just cuz you like a celebrity's work doesn't mean they are good people.

What a thrill for you to tour Jay's museum, but I'm sure Jay was equally thrilled to convey his knowledge to a much younger generation. Watching Zac turn over a Model T put a literal chill up my spine. He showed how easy it was to do, if the car wasn't too cold. And I love how Jay's team has restored the Baker to show it as a piece of social history, right down to the flower vase inside.
Well, you’d imagine it being one of Jay’s cars, it’s an impeccable model. These shafts bent sometimes, or like said about the cold; these things weren’t always so easy to turn over, hence the stories! People certainly didn’t break their wrists/arms/jaws because they weren’t able-bodied like Jobe (or did they 😂)
@@Wizard__J - I'm not old enough to have remembered when a Model T was common, but my next door neighbor told me that his first car -- this must have been the early 1930s -- was a second-hand Model T. However, I do know that before fuel injection gave our cars an automatic prime of fuel, and multi-vis oil was not that good, and all-weather batteries didn't exist, cars were hard to start when they were cold. So I presume that even a little 20 HP four-cylinder motor in a Model T was hard to start in the winter if all you had was your arm to turn the crankshaft.

Mr. Jay Leno has been building a museum collection for a few decades. Not just cars, but steam engines for pumps, antiques and general car stuff. Expect it to become a public museum, or a wing of an existing auto museum when he gets closer to going home....
Every scene being shot with a different car from Jay's collection shows just goes much fun they had shooting this. You can't not have fun when everyone in the room has the same passion.

Great video! Jay's an amazing guy, has a great collection, and loves to KNOW ABOUT and PLAY with his vehicles. So down to earth, normal, natural, and a real car guy! Meet him once in passing some place years ago while he was still on TV, and he's the kind of guy who stopped and talked to anyone--always had time for others, as if you were old friends from way back. Can't say enough good about him or his collection--the fact that he shares it with all of us is STELLAR!!

@@jonathanvillalba3214 he was working on his 1907 White steam car to repair a clogged fuel line, and he blew some air threw the line and apparently that line suddenly shot out a spray of gasoline onto his face and the pilot light ignited the gasoline vapours. It’s a miracle that he is ok and wasn’t more seriously injured
Jay is a legend, man. He was the most booked road comedian when he took over the Tonight Show and wasn't a purely clean (no cursing act). He "sold out" for TV-safe comedy but rather than take the cash and disappear, he's single handily keeping the memory and prestige of many of these vehicles alive. It's not just a museum; the fact he regularly drives all of them and is very generous with letting others as well is what's important.

I work at an antique car museum and I love that you guys are putting out this kind of content. One issue a lot of older guys have is that there isn't enough younger interest in the older tech and design. I know Donut does this with Past Gas but I am so glad they are putting out video content like this. Jay felt very natural in this too and seems Zach and Nolan had great chemistry with him. Really great vid guys!
It's probably worth less than you think. You can most likely afford a Model T if you really wanted to (you could either buy a 25 grand SUV or a 25 grand Model T, your choice). I certainly don't disagree that it's cool that he's so trusting with his cars though.
Honestly I want one of those things as a local runabout, it looks exceptionally comfortable and easy to drive, not to mention it looks great and you can very easily replace the batteries. I'd update the interior and put a solar panel on top though.
Not just a car museum but one in which every car actually fires right up like it was driven last week. More and more respect for him everytime I see those garages.

When you're crank-stating a car engine make sure to never wrap your thumb around the crank handle. Just pull up with your four fingers. I did once, when I was a teenager and seriously injured myself when it kicked back (the ignition timing was too advanced). That thumb joint has never really fully healed after many decades. It still gives me trouble, the pain sometimes interrupting my sleep.
The amount of knowledge Jay has upstairs about cars is quite astonishing! I remember he did a podcast with Jim Jefferies just a few years ago and they were quizzed him about cars & not only did he get them all right he added more information about the topic. He is an absolute delight, so happy he still happy enough to be in the spot light telling jokes, having a laugh & talking cars! Thanks for the enjoyable video guys!!
In the classic car industry, there are so many folks that are elitist and unpleasant to deal with. Jay is such a wonderful contrast to that. Based on every interaction I see, he's just a nice guy that has a genuine passion for cars of all types. To me, that's really the point.
Yes! That’s why I like Cars & Coffees more than brand meetings. When you’re out & about amongst all different kinds of enthusiasts the interactions you have are also much more wholesome. Jay has a Cars & Coffee collection at home and he is all those enthusiasts in one! All around great & likable guy!

And color did exist, and this was not the most expensive vehicle, and in the automobile scene, this was certainly a take closer to the horse carriage like sears motor wagon, however EVERY OTHER road automobile looked completely different to these. I think that the production is precisely the opposite of what you're describing. I can't retain ANY of it because there is absolutely no continuity whatsoever. It's unbelievable. It's a series of random jump cuts, no relationships between elements, and misplaced value priorities. They spent quite a while talking about how much and why they loved the Lucid (which is an absolutely horrible name for a car company - any company, in fact), yet I saw nothing to love about it. It looked like it belonged in the office suite of a CEO, and not even a CEO of a tech company, but more like a youngish, middle aged, international money market fund management company CEO. I didn't see any of the kind of excitement that people get in a Miata, for example. Anyway, the production/presentation is by far the worst part of this video, in my view. In fact, it almost undermines the substance of it. Thankfully there's enough substance at least in the parts about the 1909 Baker, which this really should have been about exclusively.

As a kid we'd go to Auburn Indiana. They have a giant car auction and car museum for Auburns, Duesenbergs, and Cords (these were the luxury car brands of the early 20th century). Anyway, I was always fascinated by the early electric cars in the museum but I never got to see one this restored or running. Thank you Jay for sharing this. Its a beautiful piece of history.
Could you cover the Aptera please? One might call it the spiritual successor to the Baker Electric as it is small, light, efficient, user repairable, and even solar powered to an extent. It is also planned to be fairly cheap.
Jay is the ultimate car guy godfather imho. Whatever amazing thing you can think of, he possibly has two of them. One of the great things about it is that if it has a couple of wheels or vaguely reminds you of something car related, he's interested in it. He's no ICE snob or brand snob either. If it has a half decent story, Jay knows it. Can't think of anyone alive or dead that embodies "car guy" more than him
The Jay Leno surprise was a pleasant gift. I have never had the pleasure of meeting the man, but in my line of work, I was fortunate enough to be able to escort 6 1930's Bentley's to Jay's Garage! It was an invite only type of thing and I was just there for work. My partner asked the lead mechanic if we can join in with the tour and to my surprise, the group we escorted agreed with it and the mechanic was more than happy to let us tour Mr. Leno's entire collection. That place is such an awesome walkthrough and I'm happy that I got that experience out of it! Seeing various parts in the backgrounds is just bringing out memories for me. Very huge thank you on both the lesson and the awesome guest feature, Donut!

GM has worked on hybrids & electric cars since the ;late 1960s. The EV1 was a market & practicality test. But electric vehicles have always been a thing, it just wasn't production cars. Notice that the Chevy Bolt appeared once the battery technology supported the range. Granted GM's supplier dropped the ball on the batteries for the EV1. However, the first affordable, practical. mass produced EV commuter car is the Chevy Bolt. [Tesla's are for rich people, with insane servicing costs and the original Tesla roadster cars were sold incomplete. Ask anyone who owns one about the cooling flex pipes that go nowhere and the other issues that make it like a 90% completed kit car. And no I don't consider the Tesla Model three to be a practical car, as Tesla's cars cost about 300% the sales price to build, so they are basically a way for polluting industries to continue to pollute...]

The shop I work at restores cars and we restore these early electric cars, the fenders were originally sewn by a special singer sewing machine made to do only that. We have put quite a bit of time and money into buying and modifying sewing machines to work so we can reproduce these leather fenders. I’ve had the privilege of putting a car similar to this around the parking lot. I also was almost electrocuted by the 4 inch arc the big battery disconnect switch made when I tried to turn it on 😂
Excellent video, and even more interesting because Jay was in it. Jay is a great guy and his enthusiasm for cars is awesome. Back in the late 1990s, I co-hosted a weekly driving-related radio show on KRLA/1110 in Los Angeles. On each show, we would interview a "Celebrity Driver of the Week," and Jay graciously agreed to be our very first guest. Talk about getting the show off to a great start!
I love at 9:10 how they just skip over the whole era in the 90s when all the top car manufacturers made electric cars. They even had a Ford Ranger electric. Nearly 5000 electric cars were designed and manufactured by Chrysler, the Ford Motor Company, General Motors (GM), Honda, Nissan, and Toyota; and then later destroyed or donated to museums and educational institutions. They even made a movie about it, ' who killed the electric car' and later a sequel 'Revenge of the Electric Car' where they talk about Tesla in the 2010s
I always thought jay was showing up on tv or some big car tv channel but it was so cool seeing him on donut, I really like him and his collection so it was so amazing seeing him with some of my favorite car presenters on youtube! Bravo donut
If they were on TV, the production wouldn't be anything close to this. It would be sterile and boring, full of ultra basic facts and information for a general audience. To avoid that kind of "corporate sterilization," they'd have to air on a specialized network, like Motor Trend. Then their ratings and viewership would plummet because that's such a small, niche market in the world of television. The best car show that ever aired on TV would probably be Roadkill, and even they've moved to more profitable streaming services now. TL;DR: If Donut moved to television, it wouldn't be the same production we love. They have more freedom and better connection to their audience by streaming their content.

Donut Media is not "twice as big as Jay Leno"... Look into what Mr. Jay Leno spends his time & money on: help for disabled veterans, training scholarships & opportunities in auto service & restoration, creating a museum rather than dozens of dead cars, etc. etc... All Donut Media has is a great TH-cam Channel, but I doubt that people will want to see the pile of wrecks & the handful of cool cars that they made. This is fine, as Donut Media is out to entertain while informing gear heads. And that pile of wrecks are necessary to test the good and bad ideas that aftermarket parts companies sell with overstated to fraudulent claims
As a person who really loves history. And is always curious to learn more about the past, and puts in time researching things from the past. Jay Leno is absolutely just as much of a historian as me. Meaning, he isn't a historian at all. He's just a guy who is interested in vehicles and the history of vehicles. I respect his desire to learn more about the history of those vehicles a lot. But, he is not a historian. He's just a curious guy who can afford to buy a lot of cars because of comedy that was mediocre enough to host a late night show. Also, that car is really cool.

Jay was a bit off-base when he said "combustion engines are pretty efficient." They're actually horribly INefficient. Most of the power generated by an ICE is wasted as heat. That's not even my opinion, that's just a straight-up fact.

Not just cars, but steam engines for pumps, antiques and general car stuff.
Expect it to become a public museum, or a wing of an existing auto museum when he gets closer to going home....
Every scene being shot with a different car from Jay's collection shows just goes much fun they had shooting this. You can't not have fun when everyone in the room has the same passion.

Great video! Jay's an amazing guy, has a great collection, and loves to KNOW ABOUT and PLAY with his vehicles. So down to earth, normal, natural, and a real car guy! Meet him once in passing some place years ago while he was still on TV, and he's the kind of guy who stopped and talked to anyone--always had time for others, as if you were old friends from way back. Can't say enough good about him or his collection--the fact that he shares it with all of us is STELLAR!!

@@jonathanvillalba3214 he was working on his 1907 White steam car to repair a clogged fuel line, and he blew some air threw the line and apparently that line suddenly shot out a spray of gasoline onto his face and the pilot light ignited the gasoline vapours.
It’s a miracle that he is ok and wasn’t more seriously injured

Jay is a legend, man.
He was the most booked road comedian when he took over the Tonight Show and wasn't a purely clean (no cursing act). He "sold out" for TV-safe comedy but rather than take the cash and disappear, he's single handily keeping the memory and prestige of many of these vehicles alive. It's not just a museum; the fact he regularly drives all of them and is very generous with letting others as well is what's important.
You could tell Jay was gonna be in this just from the driving shots at the beginning. He really liked Zach obviously, cool chemistry

I work at an antique car museum and I love that you guys are putting out this kind of content. One issue a lot of older guys have is that there isn't enough younger interest in the older tech and design. I know Donut does this with Past Gas but I am so glad they are putting out video content like this. Jay felt very natural in this too and seems Zach and Nolan had great chemistry with him. Really great vid guys!

When you're crank-stating a car engine make sure to never wrap your thumb around the crank handle. Just pull up with your four fingers. I did once, when I was a teenager and seriously injured myself when it kicked back (the ignition timing was too advanced). That thumb joint has never really fully healed after many decades. It still gives me trouble, the pain sometimes interrupting my sleep.

In the classic car industry, there are so many folks that are elitist and unpleasant to deal with. Jay is such a wonderful contrast to that. Based on every interaction I see, he's just a nice guy that has a genuine passion for cars of all types. To me, that's really the point.

I think that the production is precisely the opposite of what you're describing. I can't retain ANY of it because there is absolutely no continuity whatsoever. It's unbelievable. It's a series of random jump cuts, no relationships between elements, and misplaced value priorities. They spent quite a while talking about how much and why they loved the Lucid (which is an absolutely horrible name for a car company - any company, in fact), yet I saw nothing to love about it. It looked like it belonged in the office suite of a CEO, and not even a CEO of a tech company, but more like a youngish, middle aged, international money market fund management company CEO. I didn't see any of the kind of excitement that people get in a Miata, for example. Anyway, the production/presentation is by far the worst part of this video, in my view. In fact, it almost undermines the substance of it. Thankfully there's enough substance at least in the parts about the 1909 Baker, which this really should have been about exclusively.

As a kid we'd go to Auburn Indiana. They have a giant car auction and car museum for Auburns, Duesenbergs, and Cords (these were the luxury car brands of the early 20th century). Anyway, I was always fascinated by the early electric cars in the museum but I never got to see one this restored or running. Thank you Jay for sharing this. Its a beautiful piece of history.
Could you cover the Aptera please? One might call it the spiritual successor to the Baker Electric as it is small, light, efficient, user repairable, and even solar powered to an extent. It is also planned to be fairly cheap.

The Jay Leno surprise was a pleasant gift. I have never had the pleasure of meeting the man, but in my line of work, I was fortunate enough to be able to escort 6 1930's Bentley's to Jay's Garage! It was an invite only type of thing and I was just there for work. My partner asked the lead mechanic if we can join in with the tour and to my surprise, the group we escorted agreed with it and the mechanic was more than happy to let us tour Mr. Leno's entire collection. That place is such an awesome walkthrough and I'm happy that I got that experience out of it! Seeing various parts in the backgrounds is just bringing out memories for me. Very huge thank you on both the lesson and the awesome guest feature, Donut!

GM has worked on hybrids & electric cars since the ;late 1960s. The EV1 was a market & practicality test. But electric vehicles have always been a thing, it just wasn't production cars. Notice that the Chevy Bolt appeared once the battery technology supported the range. Granted GM's supplier dropped the ball on the batteries for the EV1.
However, the first affordable, practical. mass produced EV commuter car is the Chevy Bolt.
[Tesla's are for rich people, with insane servicing costs and the original Tesla roadster cars were sold incomplete. Ask anyone who owns one about the cooling flex pipes that go nowhere and the other issues that make it like a 90% completed kit car. And no I don't consider the Tesla Model three to be a practical car, as Tesla's cars cost about 300% the sales price to build, so they are basically a way for polluting industries to continue to pollute...]

I believe his warehouse might be part of or adjacent to an Burbank airport so it’s not necessarily just your average warehouse in an industrial area.
He has a house in a posh neighborhood but has his garages in an industrial area for obvious reasons.
I've literally never seen a Lucid car in the UK or Europe and I travel around a lot.

The shop I work at restores cars and we restore these early electric cars, the fenders were originally sewn by a special singer sewing machine made to do only that. We have put quite a bit of time and money into buying and modifying sewing machines to work so we can reproduce these leather fenders. I’ve had the privilege of putting a car similar to this around the parking lot. I also was almost electrocuted by the 4 inch arc the big battery disconnect switch made when I tried to turn it on 😂
Also we also like to call the seat that faces the driver “the BJ seat”😂

Excellent video, and even more interesting because Jay was in it. Jay is a great guy and his enthusiasm for cars is awesome. Back in the late 1990s, I co-hosted a weekly driving-related radio show on KRLA/1110 in Los Angeles. On each show, we would interview a "Celebrity Driver of the Week," and Jay graciously agreed to be our very first guest. Talk about getting the show off to a great start!
I love at 9:10 how they just skip over the whole era in the 90s when all the top car manufacturers made electric cars. They even had a Ford Ranger electric. Nearly 5000 electric cars were designed and manufactured by Chrysler, the Ford Motor Company, General Motors (GM), Honda, Nissan, and Toyota; and then later destroyed or donated to museums and educational institutions. They even made a movie about it, ' who killed the electric car' and later a sequel 'Revenge of the Electric Car' where they talk about Tesla in the 2010s

If they were on TV, the production wouldn't be anything close to this. It would be sterile and boring, full of ultra basic facts and information for a general audience. To avoid that kind of "corporate sterilization," they'd have to air on a specialized network, like Motor Trend. Then their ratings and viewership would plummet because that's such a small, niche market in the world of television.
The best car show that ever aired on TV would probably be Roadkill, and even they've moved to more profitable streaming services now.
TL;DR: If Donut moved to television, it wouldn't be the same production we love. They have more freedom and better connection to their audience by streaming their content.

All Donut Media has is a great TH-cam Channel, but I doubt that people will want to see the pile of wrecks & the handful of cool cars that they made. This is fine, as Donut Media is out to entertain while informing gear heads. And that pile of wrecks are necessary to test the good and bad ideas that aftermarket parts companies sell with overstated to fraudulent claims
As a person who really loves history. And is always curious to learn more about the past, and puts in time researching things from the past. Jay Leno is absolutely just as much of a historian as me. Meaning, he isn't a historian at all. He's just a guy who is interested in vehicles and the history of vehicles. I respect his desire to learn more about the history of those vehicles a lot. But, he is not a historian. He's just a curious guy who can afford to buy a lot of cars because of comedy that was mediocre enough to host a late night show.

They're actually horribly INefficient. Most of the power generated by an ICE is wasted as heat. That's not even my opinion, that's just a straight-up fact.
