I had a problem with this too. Tbh it reads like it was based on the Packard V1650 Wikipedia article. But they very much made it sound like this was an American engine when it is distinctly British
Was about to comment about that. Rolls-Royce named it the Merlin, and the US version was called the Packard V-1650 (the same exact Packard that made cars, Motor City). It was the same overall design, however, with creating new blueprints to suit American perspective layouts, dimensions and tolerances were altered to allow for mass production as Rolls-Royce built them with manual, fine tuning of clearances.

His videos of his collection are one of the most valuable sources of information that exist to the public on many prewar cars. What an invaluable resource.
Another thing about aircraft engines is that they are built for low RPM. Since propellers generate a lot of stress and are limited in performance by the tip speed. Propellers performance greatly decreases when the blade tips reach Mach. Hence why the piston is so fat as compared to car engines. Also aircraft engines have their crankshafts trying to rip out of the end of the case! The propeller/prop hub is sometimes bolted directly to the crankshaft. So the case is build to be able to transfer 1000+lbs directly from the crank to the aircraft. So it’s a chunky engine.
Jay is the whole reason I know and understand the stories of old cars. And for him to let everyone just hang out and drive his cars just shows how much he loves getting others into what he loves!
All this mention of American manufacturing but no mention of the fact its a British engine and the Yanks only manufactured a 3rd of the 150,00 Merlins made during the war. A derivative of the Merlin was used in Tanks but that was called the Meteor.

The non-supercharged Merlin, used in tanks, etc, was called the Rolls Royce METEOR. James May expostulates at length on it in a certain episode of Top Gear, in which they compare a Meteor-powered Bentley with another monster machine, the German Brutus (? - if memory serves) which had a German aero engine.
There are a 'worrying' amount of cool Meteor powered cars out there it would appear! Not only was the meteor not supercharged but it also had less lightweight alloy and magnesium alloy engine components as they simply weren't a requirement for tanks. There's a great display of the Spitfire and lots of its components at Hanley Museum in Stoke on Trent. The display plane was flown over Stoke on Trent several times before being retired to be an exhibit. It used to be kept in a huge glass outhouse which was really cool but it was finally moved indoors sometime in the early to mid 80s.
Can I just say good job?? I've seen so many TH-cam channels absolutely butcher the whole idea if altitude and air pressure decrease but y'all kept it simple and to the point.

The P51 wasn't designed for the engine nor vice versa. The engine was designed for a variety of British planes. The P51 was designed with the Allison engine, but the RAF thought it could be made better if they put a Merlin in it (as it was working very well in the Spitfire and Hurricane). And then a phenomenal plane was born.
I love that Donut as a fairly young outlet compared to Jay's stuff is teaming up with him and not just stuck on the classic TH-cam vlog style. Top Gear watch out!
I hate to add its a british engine designed, delevoped and built in crewe in britain and its supercharged variants, its not murican, I do approve of our former colonies putting it in P51 mustangs.
They stated it was a Rolls-Royce, and it was licensed for manufacture in the U.S. (Packard, I believe). Interesting that they Allison wasn't bad, but inferior to the Merlin due to the 2-stage freedom corkscrew. When the Allison was upgraded to a 2-stage supercharger, it was actually a bit better than the Merlin.
Such a great episode. The propellor that engine was designed to turn imparted an insane amount of force back into the engine air airframe so that’s another reason those engines were built so beastly.
I love how Jay is keeping these cars drivable and actually drives them. Many others keep their cars locked up, too worried about breaking something. Jay isn't too worried about breaking something, he and his guys have fixed so much they know unless he hits a wall at 200mph they can fix it again if necessary. Love the colabs with Jay! Always been my favorite channel on TH-cam, but recently it’s a full blown production. How y’all haven’t gotten picked up by a serious tv provider on discovery, motor trend or other channels is crazy. Love y’all!
Eh, I think they're starting to run out of ideas. Starting to just do stuff they wanna do. Now that they're proven successful they don't have to try as hard.
I love the way Jay not only has a Merlin V12 knocking about, but it's ready to run, in a cool custom built trailer, and it has a CHROME PROPELLOR!!!! Truly, the petrolhead's petrolhead.
I had no idea they built Merlins in the US! Rolls Royce used to run these things full tilt, nonstop 24/7 until something broke. They beefed that part up and did it again. However, the Rolls Royce tank engine wasn't called the Merlin, that's the Meteor. Very similar engine but not supercharged.
I might be the only one thinking this but sometimes the way donut presents these stories it almost feels like a kids' show. The contrast between that and the Keeps hair loss commercial is hilarious to me.
Guys love tech content and never had a bad word to say about ... BUT The Merlin is a British engine designed and built in England, nothing to do with the Americans. So jays idea that you couldn't build them quick enough is rubbish..
It’s so cool seeing this. Donut took a chance on these two hosts. Watching them drive around with Jay Leno living their dreams makes me so unbelievably happy. Congrats Jer Bear and Jobey!
That engine is a British design engine which was originally built for the Spitfire. At some point it was licenced to the USA for use in the P51 Mustang to make them more competitive against German and Japanese fighters. That particular one is most likely built in the US though at a guess
Jay Leno is soo cool, sharing his collection. That EPIC moment (1:46) he fired up the Merlin engine on the trailer and just about blew their faces off!!
God bless Jay lenno, he easily could've been just one of those guys who sits on nice cars in a garage and keeps to himself but here he is holding court like a king among the donut goofballs. Nothing but love and respect for the guy
First off, Rolls-Royce Merlin is a UK designed and UK built engine. The US needed an engine, so they licensed the Rolls-Royce Merlin. They then had Packard build the engine.... It was called the Packard Merlin and built in the US. The data plate you showed was from the Rolls-Royce....
I mean, it has Polish Chechboard on front as well, so they've probably just googled ,,allied WW2 fighter plane" and went along with it. But it wasn't about fighter planes, just about diffrent cars.
Just to make sure everyones on the same page. The ROLLS-ROYCE Merlin/Meteor was, as the name suggests, a British invention. The British ALLOWED the Merlin to be built under license in the US, because they couldn't come up with a better engine. Would be nice for Donut to perhaps start fact checking their stats? If they got this horrendously wrong, who knows what else they've got wrong too.
“They used to use these as air raid sirens” is a actually a great subtle joke. (The roar of the plane’s engine served as its own warning they were incoming. Took me a second lol) He should be a comedian ;)
The biggest reason the Merlin engine is so big is because in a propeller driven airplane, you are actually limited by how fast the propeller can spin. In the P-51, the engine was limited to 3000RPM by a propeller governor. Any faster and the propeller tips would go supersonic, causing loss of efficiency in thrust, becoming extremely loud, and eventually destroying the prop through erosion from supersonic shockwaves. So aircraft engines rather than spinning faster to make power, they simply become bigger and bigger because propellers can only spin so fast based on their diameter.

Watching Jay Leno just have so much fun in this video has made my week!!!! He's always been a real nice guy. He was awesome when he came out to do a video on my uncle's car.
Jay is such a legend sharing this stuff with anyone he can.
Jay is so smart, he is using Donut as a vehicle to spread his knowledge and showcase his unrivaled collection.
When i saw the teaser for this on donut underground it was so exciting. and now finally getting to see the full video is great.
Love the colabs with Jay! Always been my favorite channel on TH-cam, but recently it’s a full blown production.
How y’all haven’t gotten picked up by a serious tv provider on discovery, motor trend or other channels is crazy. Love y’all!
Having Jay on Donut is a HUGE milestone!
9:10 i died that was hilarious! 😂😂😂 Jay's wailing scream is the best
With the twin compressor layout this engine can get up to 2000hp and i dont even want to imagine what it would make with modern stuff.
It's so nice to see Jay being more "silly", makes me happy. Is a privilege to watch this legend talking about cars or bikes.
loving this years content man, getting better every year. much love to the entire team!
Eh, I think they're starting to run out of ideas. Starting to just do stuff they wanna do. Now that they're proven successful they don't have to try as hard.
You guys do a great job and deserve all the success you've achieved! Keep it up!
It actually warms my heart so much to see Jay’s joy showing off to the next generation
6:21 yep, it is illegal in all of the 59 states 😂😂
I might be the only one thinking this but sometimes the way donut presents these stories it almost feels like a kids' show. The contrast between that and the Keeps hair loss commercial is hilarious to me.
Jay seems like the coolest grandpa any kid could ever ask for!
Without Jay's generosity and enthusiasm to share his astounding collection the masses would never get to see these quirky one of a kind cars.
At 8:07, to the left of Jay Leno's head is a 2023 Kia Telluride, and it looks SICK.
Guys love tech content and never had a bad word to say about ... BUT
The Merlin is a British engine designed and built in England, nothing to do with the Americans.
So jays idea that you couldn't build them quick enough is rubbish..
“I don’t like how my head is the tallest thing on this car”
“You’re the roll bar”
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
The merlin is an English engine.
Jay is so cool❤ I love it haha they get along well when there is still 40 years difference in age. Cars bring us together no matter the age!
Please do more stuff with Mr. Leno! Such a legend ❤
2:07 Are we just going to brush over the fact that this is a British designed and made engine used predominantly in British aircraft?
I mean, it has Polish Chechboard on front as well, so they've probably just googled ,,allied WW2 fighter plane" and went along with it.
But it wasn't about fighter planes, just about diffrent cars.
Yes. It was used in the P-51 Mustang and that's all we care about.
Wake,Bake, watch Donut ❤
this is the way
Wish I could bake right now! Lucky dog
Wasn't expecting TWO Jay Leno's Garage video's within just a few days from each other. Awesome! These old aero-engined vehicles are just so cool.
“They used to use these as air raid sirens” is a actually a great subtle joke. (The roar of the plane’s engine served as its own warning they were incoming. Took me a second lol) He should be a comedian ;)
Jay is such a gem, you guys are lucky! And it makes awesome content!
"... so they came up with..." Yeah, but it's a British engine!
I wish Jay would come back to doing stand-up. Just for a little while. 😂😂
He’s never stopped, he tours constantly. In fact, he’s never spent any of his Tonight Show money. He has always lived off his stand up.
@@sleep_soundsso what is his networth?

The biggest reason the Merlin engine is so big is because in a propeller driven airplane, you are actually limited by how fast the propeller can spin. In the P-51, the engine was limited to 3000RPM by a propeller governor. Any faster and the propeller tips would go supersonic, causing loss of efficiency in thrust, becoming extremely loud, and eventually destroying the prop through erosion from supersonic shockwaves. So aircraft engines rather than spinning faster to make power, they simply become bigger and bigger because propellers can only spin so fast based on their diameter.
Jay is such a legend. I met him a long time ago he was in NY at a Charity event. I was about 10 or so. He was super nice to me and my family. And the fact that hes a car guy just makes it so much better.
Day 397 of asking James to do an Up to Speed on his Dad
Leno is lucky to meet you guys, hopefully he draws inspiration from you guys and ups his quality
Jesus loves us
I agree with the other guy that said it, I absolutely love seeing Job+Jerry content
From a scrapping together budget builds early on to now hanging with Jay Leno, well done Donut Media you have come far.
This car was in an episode of top gear... the real top gear with Jeremy... james and hammond. Jays a legend 👌👌
It's nice to see someone who not only drives their rare/expensive cars on the regular, but is also willing to share the experience with others. They're cars, you drive them.
Jay Leno teaming up with Donut is a match made in heaven. Car people who are passionate about what they love.
"If you scratch it, I'll drag you behind it" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Massive piston engines are still my favorite in Aviation. Nothing like a massive V12 or a gigantic Radial engine. I’ve seen extremely powerful jet engines and turboprops up close but nothing compares to the rumble and rhythm of reciprocation
