► MARANTZ AV RECEIVER REVIEW - NR1711 REVIEW
Shopping for a 7 channel AV receiver with Bluetooth? The Marantz NR1711 receiver is worth a look. This 7.2 channel 8K receiver from Marantz may not be the BEST av receiver on the market, but it’s slim format, exceptional build quality and moderate price may be all the home theater receiver you really need. We loved both our KEF Q750 and Monitor Audio Bronze to be the best speakers for Marantz receiver.

Been using an NR1604 since 2015 for both 2 channel and home theater and I love it. Would like to upgrade to this but since the NR1604 still works great I'm going to wait. One of the main reasons I bought it was the slim form factor and did all that I needed.

I think what Kristi is saying is that for most people's typical 5.1 set ups in a modest room with nice efficient speakers, the Marantz is all you need and to spend a lot more you would be hitting the point of diminishing returns.

I bought this AVR a few months ago, and I've been very happy with it. It provides me with all the connections and power that I need. I live in an apartment, so I can't have something that will get too loud, so I wasn't worried about the lower power rating. The slim design also was requested by my wife, so that factored a lot into my decision.

I also wanted to thank you again for your advice on my Sony STR-DN1080 settings for my hearing impaired daughter (about 1 year ago ish). I couldn't find the original post where you gave me the advice so thought I'd get on your latest video and thank you. I finally got to hook it up and calibrate it in our home (pandemic delays on construction). Keep up the great reviews and thanks again!

Thing I liked about the 1200 is that it slightly placed the emphasis on 2 channel audio ahead of AV. That's my mix, audio first, video for convenience. I don't think anyone else is doing that right now.
Kristi, really loved how you know what you like and were able to explain it so clearly. You ain't no novice no more!

Really appreciate the convo at the end. I just ordered a RZ50 to replace my Marantz NR1602 recently. The Marantz is great and it fit onto the furniture I had. Just “graduated” to more power hungry speakers and more channels so Onkyo seemed like a good upgrade, well except for figuring out where to put it!

Great review, Andrew! I replaced my older Marantz receiver with the NR1711 recently and your review is spot on. I'm very happy with it - it drives my Klipsch R-620Fs just fine (the two balance each other out well). I also drive a 5.1 system with it and agree with Kristi - it's spooky good for a simple system.

    2 whole years !!!
I still have my Pioneer 1080 that I got in the 70s. Never had a problem, sounds great. Blew many speakers over the years until I had a custom pair made by a company that make speakers for Clubs. Thing will probably out live me. It's what like 50 years old now? Amazing. Has pins in the back that I was able to use a Carver Amp and the Pioneer becomes a preamp and tuner.
Sold the Carver cube 500 watts RMS. Had no use for it. The Pioneer is raited at 120 per channel Rms and has analog meters that go up to 240 per side. I'm telling you this thing kicks but.

Have a 1710. Works great and I really like it's slim profile. A normal AV receiver would not fit in my console. In my smaller room, it has JUST enough power and works much better using more efficient Klipsch speakers. Using the pre out to another amp for the LR and using a Klipsch center speaker helped A LOT. Class D amps do not take up a lot of space, I don't know why they can't make a receiver in a slim box like this but with twice the power.

I have a NR1711 and it sounds great. It does run a little warm. I added a Marantz 2 ch amplifier and it changed everything. The addition of the amp did not necessarily make it any louder but it did give the sound more air and space. The improvement in sound was immediately noticeable. The NR1711 now runs a lot cooler.

I use the Marantz 1711 with a Parasound 150x2 amp for the left and right channels. I think once you off load the left and right the receiver works really well. Then again on hindsight I could have bought a better receiver with more power for the cost of NR1711 and the power amp. I'm still happy with the sound and the receiver over all.

Great review about this product. You gave me some new helpfull information about it, thank you for that. I own a NR1711 for some weeks now and I'm still impressed. It's not my first Marantz slim-line-receiver. I first had an NR1403, then went up to NR1609. After then I had a SR5013 (not slime-line) for a year and now I landed at the NR1711. The pre-out-section is really that good, that I startet to use the ZONE-2 as a stereo-pre-amp (2. room where I listen to stereo). A european Marantz-website sais, that both (NR1510 and NR1711) are sold out. With the NR1711 you get a lot receiver for the money.
If it helps someone: I use Piega Smart-speakers in my av-configuration and Piega Premium-speakers for the stereo-configuration.

Picked this up to replace a 15 year old Onkyo that wont turn back on. Wow. This receiver made me fall in love with my 15 year old Infinity Beta 20s. They finally sounded like they did in the store when I bought them. They sounded “fine” before, but they came alive with the 1711 in a way they never had before. Amazing detail and separation right off the bat. The Onkyo was almost twice the wattage and this blows it out of the water at 50 watts. Really glad I grabbed this as an open box at Best Buy. Almost skipped it as it had no box at all, but I had to give Marantz a try. Really wanted something with legacy ports to replace the Onkyo and for the very discounted price, this is perfect.

I've had the Marantz NR1711 in my setup for almost a year now and I'm very pleased with its performance. It was easy to setup and plays very nicely with my Samsung 'Frame' smart TV as well as my Panasonic Blu-ray player. For its size it has a wealth of inputs including legacy component input/output. For two channel music I still run my PM7004 amplifier as it's noticeably better. Form factor, versatility and the Marantz sound were all influences in the purchase of the NR1711. Y

I have the Marantz NR1710, basically the previous version without the 8K and 32-bit DAC. They share the same amp and the Marantz is perfect for what I needed in a very tight room with very sensitive and drivable speakers! I needed better integration with HDMI devices and newer surround sound codecs and it delivers very well within my tight listening space! I had a 2001 TEAC AG-D7900 which had more power but it was not modern enough for my standards and devices. This Marantz won’t disappoint amateur enthusiasts and even veterans with small rooms and efficient speakers!

A year ago I retired an HK AVR650 for the Marantz 1710. I did an energy audit of my home. I found out that my HK was consuming 100 watts of energy even with the volume turned all the way down. The Marantz consumes very little energy. I also have a older Sub Woofer that is a power hog in standby. I think the only feature missing with my 1710 is a digital radio tuner.

I'm always a fan of Marantz's slim form factor models. Their flexibility for placement, the ease of use for people who just want to turn it on and go, and their build quality make them a top option. Space or complexity isn't a factor for me, but because I have become my friends default home theater consultant, I have setup numerous small, modest theaters for them and I always recommend a slim Marantz , the price is worth it , most of these people do not want to be bothered with getting technical and are also not going to be upgrading their system as often as "enthusiasts" will and the Marantz models tend to be pretty bulletproof in my experience. It looks like the 1711 continues this trend. Thank you both for your review.

The nr-1711 sounds natural, warm, elegant dynamics, precise but not details exagerated. The 50 per channel in stereo sounds very very good. I am not a novice, and i had the chance to compare the Marantz 1711 to expensive Yamaha series and Onkyo Rz50. The Onkyo was louder by db but a little harsh in treble compare to the Marantz. The low and high midrange are superior of the Marantz are superior compared to the Onkyo. The lows are better on the Onkyo in stereo mode. I use the Marantz with Atmos speakers on top of my front Monitor Audio Bronze 100 Speakers and it sounds great, nothing less.
When i use the Marantz in Stereo i put my sub on.. it add just a bit the deep bass is lacking.
Finally, the separation, the stage presence are very good on the Marantz.
Also, i have the silver one… it looks vintage and cool !

I have NR1710, last year model, I think it is very good AVR, its utility is its size, I am using in 5.2 set up with B&W anniversary edition speakers. due to this AVR size I am able use my fireplace entertainment center, room is large with cathedral ceiling and it feels very powerful. 85 db is very loud which this AVR is capable off, to be honest for small spaces this one of the best for price. it is plenty for two channels music. price is not cheap as it close to 1K now. very good review. it is gem for price and size.
I would not compare this to larger size AVR regardless of price point, it is not the intended use of this AVR. my argument would be if one need small form factor AVR for almost same features of larger unity then Marantz wins. this AVR has almost no competition

I just got this amp the other week and find it's plenty powerful enough for me. My speakers don't actually have much information on them but I'd imagine they are 8ohms and their sensitivity isn't very high. It's running a 5.1 set up perfectly fine and plenty loud enough. I'd imagine adding another 2 speakers for 7.1 would also be okay.

I was going to to purchase one but the prices jumped and since I was only going to end up with a 5.1 setup (over time) I decided that the cheaper NR1510 was a better value for me. The NR is the only format that I can fit in my beautiful custom credenza (built it around my old Bose system, did not think that standard receivers would be so large so I needed less than 6" tall profile). Marantz solves a real problem with their NR Slimline products.

I had to get on the computer to tell you this is a great review! My wife is of Kristi's mind as what will get her by has no relation to what I do. lol FYI: the 8015 is 145W but when driving 11 channels drops to 101.2W, which is still enough to do the job.

First, let me say that it's snowing here in Kalamazoo, Michigan. I won't call it hell freezing over cold, but cold. Next, I really appreciate the range of products that you guys do weekly. It seems like many of over channels that I watch are increasingly doing more Storm Audio type equipment and 20 thousand dollar projectors, all while quietly hinting that where we should be heading if we are in the hobby. While I like seeing equipment like that from time time. I'm never going to be able to buy stuff like that. So I also want to see videos of equipment that's realistically attainable.
I also want to thank you for giving us a look at what the Marantz is like with an external amplifier. I know some people will probably suggest buying a different product with more power as opposed to buying a power amplifier, but the slimline is very appealing for living room setups. Or, as you explained in your video, you may like a particular receiver but may have different needs for a certain brand of speaker. In either case, thanks for giving us an impression of how the unit will fair when using the pre-amp outs.
Lastly, I think Sound United has a guarantee that their products will produce 70% of its 2 channel wattage rating across five channels. I'm not sure, but I think you can turn off the front channels or reroute them when using the pre-outs.
    Great video

I've had the NR1710(no 8k)for about 9 months. Got it refurbished for $600 and it has performed flawlessly. I run the pre-out to the Emotiva Basx 2 channel, and run the center, surround, and sub channels with the Marantz. Form factor was a huge consideration for me and this worked out great. So I have 160 watts per channel for my front towers and whatever power the Marantz has for the other channels.

I also just upgraded to the NR1710 and ordered the Emotiva A2 as well. I had a NR1603 previously with 3D pass through and loved it, the NR 1710 makes a lot of sense, it’s does everything the NR1711 does with no 8K pass through. Any modern films that have CGI are rendered at 2K-3K anyway because it’s extremely expensive right now, so what’s why is everyone in a hurry to get 8K? 8K will be relevant in 15-20 years maybe, but 4K 120Hz may be more interesting to an justify An NR1711 purchase…but $600, for what we got is a steal.

    Before my 2 questions...
That was another Gr8 report. Your reporting is enjoyable and especially the unique and impromptu exchanges after the thorough review! Those exchanges bring out very interesting perspectives which really help better understand your reasoning and also aiding my decision processes. 😀
I especially took note of Kristi and You discussing the Onkyo TX-RZ50 comparison .. and mentioning an "XTZ Amp,"
    - Did you use it to drive the front L&R ...?
    - Is that the same Pwr Amp you'd recommend using with the Onkyo TX-RZ50 to create a 7.2.4 Atmos system? (XTZ A2-400, $900, and XTZ A2-300 $500) ?
My challenge is I have temp housing while we build our retirement home (a 3-BR, 2.5 Bath, snd Theater), ... BUT I don't want to waste money and buy anything that won't grow into the new home 1.5yrs from now.
    Cheers,
    Eric

Thanks for the review! I have the NR1510 5.1 and it's wonderful. By itself it's sufficient for my condo, but I paired it with the Emotiva BasX A2. I upgraded my TV so I just picked up the new Marantz Cinema 70s, thinking I may go to a 7.1 or 7.2 system. It too is wonderful and paired with the Emotiva amp, it's a wonderful system for my condo unit. These Marantz Slimline receivers are very nice units and there is something to be said to use the 70s as a pre-amp and add an external amp to all the channels. The advantage to this, in my mind, is that you can upgrade the receiver in the future but don't have to buy a powerful one because you already have the amp.

I am looking at the Cinema 70s to go with my Emotiva basX A3 and a new tv, I've got a couple of questions if you have a moment :)
The 1510/1711 and the Cinema 70s all only have 50 watts total. You are still driving a center and 2 rear speakers with your set up .
How far does 50 watts go considering all manufacturers fiddle with that wattage rating ?
Was also wondering if the Cinema 70s has any fans for cooling the HDMI boards ? I haven't seen anyone on youTune open it up and show ?
Hopefully since it's not a big wattage amp it's not running hot ?
      Thanks

    • @jl6165
      @jl6165 ปีที่แล้ว

@@deadline7610 The 50 watts is plenty, even with my 5.1 system. The amp really is only needed for richer high volume audio, but I never play it very loud. I could get along just fie without it. I really just added the amp to future proof it. I don't know if this unit has a cooling fan, I've never heard one running. I have only one complaint with this unit. It is the new remote. The new remote is very stylish and modern looking, whereas ad the old was a bit retro looking. But the new remote is not ergonomic at all, and sometimes it's difficult to find what button you want because they are all small and look the same. The old remote has larger buttons for the volume control and are white, so they stand out. I use the old remote rather than the new one, and I am disappointed that for a $1200 unit, no ergonomic thought was given to the remote. They put style over function and that's a disappointment.

I like that Marantz rates the power nicely from 20Hz to 20 Khz 0.08% THD. That is honest.
Take Onkyo for example, they rate the power at 1kHz 10% THD.
So ALWAYS check how the power is rated. Marantz does a good job here.
Also, if you add a sub, a lot of power normally used for base is now handled by the sub.

Found this on the Marantz website and this unit has this. Hopefully this helps
    70% Power Guarantee
Marantz has the 70% power guarantee, meaning that a minimum of 70% of the stereo power indicated in the specification section will be available when 5 channels are simultaneously used. A lot of misunderstanding about power rating has been created by claiming the highest possible output power as a unique selling point. Measurement often has been done on only 1 speaker drive, with lower impedance than 8 ohms and high THD (total harmonic distortion) acceptance. A standard THD value is 0.08%. The lower the better

I would definitely pay more for a smaller AV receiver. I always had problems finding furniture for my Marantz SR5004. If I tried to fit it into a regular Ikea piece of furniture, it most likely wouldn't work. I've always had trouble finding good looking audio furniture that my AVR would also fit into. So a smaller AV receiver would be worth quite some money in my opinion... a big and powerful AVR can get really big and not everyone has the space for that.
So I'm glad a product like this exists. I can totally see me buying one of these smaller Marantz AVRs. I think it should work pretty well with my Klipsch RF-82.

Not sure if age has something to do with it. I'm assuming the Marantz NR1711 would be a huge step us. And I like your comment about the dialogue being clear. this is a struggle for most people I think especially because different streaming platforms produce different output qualities.

I had the marantz 1403 about 8 years, it replaced an entry level Integra when HDMI was introduced. I liked Audessey, but my initial impression of the unit was it was a bit dull vs the more lively Integra. Nevertheless, the audessey did a good job in room and I only just replaced it last year with a more muscular Yamaha AV-R1080. If I had it all to do over again, I'd probably have saved a bit more to get something with more power, unless you have a really small room or really high sensitive speakers vs any entry level AVR.

I’m glad it has stereo pre-outs so you can connect an external amp to drive your fronts if you need the extra power for stereo music listening. But with the power this has, I feel like you’d need some pretty efficient speakers for this receiver to really shine to its fullest potential.

Where you can put very efficient speakers from likes of Tekton. Great product if you do not have a lot of rack space. Otherwise, I would save up for a more robust HT receiver.
In the two channel world, I would opt for dedicated 2 channel integrated. For me, in that application it would be too much money spent on licensing of HT formats and amp modules you do not need.

First of all, a great review, as always! Moreover, based on your review and the slim profile, I have a Marantz NR1711 on the way to me.. I was able to pick one up, used, at a great price! Looking forward to setting it up and hearing the sound quality compared to my current and outdated AV Receiver, the Onkyo TX-SR606..
I will be using the Marantz in my living room, mainly to enjoy watching movies (Netflix and Blu-Ray) and TV.. I currently have a 5.1 setup, and I am a little worried the power wont be sufficient, but maybe it is. I usually listen at moderate volume. Exceptionally, I will boost the volume slightly, but never to the extreme as my kids bedrooms are 1 floor above..
But I was thinking of picking up the XTZ A2-300, if needed.. I was wondering when adding such a power amplifier, if the Receiver would also run cooler? As I hear the Marantz can run a little hot.. Not sure yet if that will actually be the case, as I do not have it in use yet..
    Looking forward to any feedback!
