I've had 5 receivers since 2000 for home theater.
Dislike: onkyo back in 2000-2010 (has 5.1) runs hot which killed the HDMI output.
Like: Denon 1912 (has 5.1) since 2010 runs warm
Love: Denon AVR-X3700H (5. 2 independent sub outputs .4 atmos; Has atmos dts:x Imax dts:Neo6)
and Denon AVR-S760H (5. 2 identical sub outputs .2 atmos; Has atmos dts:x) since 2021
      runs warm.
I love streaming Spotify from my iPhone to Denon HEOS receivers and the 7 Denon HEOS

Glad to see Pioneer getting back in the game. While I have been (and still am) a huge Onkyo receiver fan, I still have my Pioneer Elite M-91 amp from the 80s rocking. Thanks to this wonderful community for a great year. Hope you all stay healthy and warm. Special thanks to Kristi and Andrew for all their hard work. Have a very safe and happy new year. I'm hoping to grab some La Scalas in the spring. :)

I was fortunate to be able to get an Anthem MRX1140. I love it. Once dialed in, I feel that the marantz/denon/Yamaha flagships just can’t compete. It’s truly tragic that anthem doesn’t give you guys the respect you deserve and opportunity to review their products. They’re stuck in the past when it comes to their marketing tactics.

    • @Roller11111
      @Roller11111 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Was able to experience it through a local distributor (with Paradigm speakers) and was blown away. Got the 1140 at a little more than the 740 because Anthem ran out of stock on the 740 (score!).
Can't wait to officially unbox as I complete my home theater.

I just picked up the onkyo tx-nr5100 and its amazing. I upgraded from a cheap $350 yamaha AVR that only supported 4K 60hz and 5.1 channel. It had no wifi, no dolby atmos, no ALLM, no VRR, no dolby vision, and couldn't support 4k 120hz. So for me this new onkyo is so amazing as it has all those features at only $499. One thing to note, if ARC isnt working for you, make sure you update the firmware of the AVR. It didnt work for me until I did that, now its perfect.

Andrew, First, I really enjoy your videos! Most reviewers I've watched fall into one of two categories...hyper technical, or not technical at all. You're the only one I've found who provides the guy on the street with an easily digestible balance of information that eases both the learning and decision making processes we "consumer grade" users face as we build our systems. That said, I'm hoping you can solve a mystery that is currently driving me batstuff crazy. I recently began searching in the northern Virginia area for a home theater company that would do an "old school" 5.1 audio calibration of my audio system. I had a system calibrated by a MyerEmco sound engineer back in about 2002...he used a calibration microphone connected to a portable spectrum analyzer and he systematically output pink noise to each discreet channel using a DVD with 5.1 channel pink noise test tones. He then used the preamp's onboard 9-band graphic equalizer to get each channel as flat as possible. Back then I had a Pioneer Elite AV receiver, and even with the graphic EQ versus a DSP or parametric EQ he was able to achieve astonishing results. On to my problem...while I have found a couple companies in my area that still do this old-school calibration, all but one only perform the service for home theaters they have designed and installed. The one company that was (kinda) willing to do the calibration insisted I insert cheap DSP's via RCA connections between my preamp and amp claiming the onboard EQ was incapable of achieving the desired flat response. That sounded official and all until I researched the DSP's he recommended and learned that instead of the meager 9 bands my preamp EQ has, the DSP's have a whopping 10 bands. So...not sure why a 9 band solution is so completely inadequate but 10 is just fine? I suppose there may be more steps per band maybe which gives a bit more adjustment granularity, but I'm 60 and I doubt I could hear the difference between a 9 or 10 band result. Also, I don't want to ditch my balanced XLR preamp to amp interconnects for RCA cables! If you've read this far I appreciate it...I will now cough up my question...can you recommend a DIY kit or kluged together collection of gear and software that a residential consumer could use to recreate the calibration process I experienced 20 years ago...which appears to be a dead or dying species. I've researched software like SONARWorks (software and microphone) and similar, but their literature (that I've found so far) doesn't really spell out if it is designed to work with a 5.1 setup. Also, a 5.1 pink noise test DVD also seems to be on the endangered list...I'm aware of the AVIA and AVIA II disks, though again the product descriptions online have been diluted over the many years since their original release and I'm not convinced they have the pink noise tones needed to enable the flattening process (at like $85 a pop). My Marantz 8805A preamp appears to output pink noise for manual setting of channel levels, but I can't find anything in the manual that confirms it is full spectrum pink noise, or just a basic test tone to enable simple dB measurements only. if it helps, here's a quick description of my system as it stands today, a Sony Z9J 85" 8K tv, Marantz 8805A preamp, Parasound HALO A51 amp, REVEL C426Be center channel, four (4) Definitive MYTHOS STL Towers for front L/R and surround L/R, and an SVS PB16 sub. The Marantz onboard Audyssey self calibration makes the system sound like its trapped inside a 55 gallon drum or a refrigerator box. I've labored to tune the EQ by ear which is fine and sounds great don't get me wrong, but obviously the system would get much closer to reference if properly calibrated. I'm happy to put in the time and buy what is needed for a DIY project, but of the products out there at companies like Sweetwater and others, it's difficult to know what to buy, and I've really struggled to find 5.1 pink noise source tones. Like I said, batstuff crazy. In closing, literally ANY thoughts, suggestions, or guidance you might be willing to offer would be greatly appreciated! Beyond that, thanks again for all the great videos and I look forward to the next one. Regards and thanks.

Thanks again for your great videos!
I came back to watch this one because I wanted to pick up an AV receiver for my lounge room. Currently just using a pair of VAF DC7s (old floor standing speakers that I'm pretty happy with) and using a Nintendo Switch, an Apple TV and free-to-air TV channels.
After seeing the Onkyo here I picked up their TX-SR393 and loving the sound! Got a bit more set up to do but I reckon I'll be happy with this for quite a while!
    Cheers!

Thanks for all your reviews this year! I pre ordered an rz50 5 months ago and never received anything but a "sorry we don't know when we will get it". I ended up finding an in stock integra 5.4 and snapped it up. Its worth a couple hundered bucks just to actually have it in the grand scheme of things. So far its been excellent and sounds amazing, a lot of people are gonna love the rz50 when they can finally, at some point, get their hands on them. Dirac is hands down no question vastly better than any other built in room correction I've seen.

Andrew I love the list and I am stoked to see that the Pioneer Elite 305 made it to number two. I am so eager and excited to see a review of the 505 and how it ranks against the competition especially the Onkyo RZ50. I have a 505 on order right now but they are extremely hard to get in Canada due to the supply chain issues that most manufacturers are suffering. I currently have a 304 that I’m going to upgrade and would love to be able to see you review the 505. Hope you had a fantastic Christmas and happy new year to you and Kristie.

Hi Andrew, Kristi, this is Andrew from Alberta Canada. Love your channel content.
I currently have a decade plus old Pioneer VSX-1127-K which I have loved since plugging it in, having a 7.1 setup with 2 Sony SS-CSE Dolby Atmos Enabled speakers atop my legacy Pioneer CS-V975 4-way front towers, Energy CF-70 surrounds and some (adequate for now but pending upgrade) Pyramid 4080 bookshelves (rears and wides) and a Polk PSW-110 sub. Even without DTS:X or Atmos capable amp I've listened to several TH-cam DTS:X and Atmos demos using Dolby PLIIz and they sound freaking amazing with sound moving all around the room understanding that I'm not actually decoding either of the signals and am listening to a 2 channel stereo signal via TH-cam. I have 11.1 speakers in the room albeit 2 are surround wide and 2 surround back, and the amp can ONLY drive 7.1 speakers itself so its either the front height OR front wide OR room 2 which I choose via a multi-port speaker switch. I ran the MCAAC room correction in my near 400sq ft listening space to ensure best distance accuracy and tonality. Having no access to DTS:X or Atmos with this amp, nor a similar setup to compare. Here's the question... I've been trying to assess if I can justify an upgrade to a true 9.1 or 11.1 receiver with DTS:X and Dolby Atmos for $1600-2100-2500 or more... Would I notice a stand out improvement in spacial acuity? I've heard/watched videos suggesting that the content mixed into Atmos movies is moreover sadly lacking, as if it was a lazily thrown in afterthought by the engineers. Seems like a lot of money for little gain, if any. I'm currently being drawn to the SCLX305, SCLX505 or SCLX705. (the $4300 for the SCLX905 is out of reach) Any thoughts?? Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the #1 recommendation of the Onkyo TX-RZ50. After weeks of searching the web I found one thru the Onkyo Outlet and just received it. Took less time than I thought hooking it up and reading the digital Manual. Too bad the DIRAC product key didn't work (We will be contacting Onkyo and DIRAC on Monday) but she's a powerful and super capable AVR that compares well with the up level Denon, Marantz, and Yamaha models. Got the RZ50 to replace a 6 year old Marantz SR-7012 that had developed several issues.

Great video again! I love the reviews and it's great to hear about equipment/brands that I would never have looked at before. I " still" have a Marantz SR7013 and it's still a pretty great receiver. I'll get a new one when I get a TV that supports VRR and Marantz/Denon get their 40k120 business in order ;-). The one thing I always look at when I get a new receiver is that I get Audyssey Multeq XT32 and not the "just" Multeq XT one. To my ears, there's a big difference and worth the extra cost. Someday I'm going to get into Dirac Live, but Audyssey has served me really well since even the days Onkyo still had it in their receivers. Happy Holidays and can't wait for the new content in 2022!

I tried out the Onkyo TX-NR6050 from Costco and ended up returning it and keeping my Yamaha TSR-700.
I found the Onkyo sounded more muffled with the mids bleeding into the lows and highs.
The Onkyo also had a worse sounding dolby surround upmixing compared to my TSR-700.
I even used the built in Onkyo Klipsch settings which were custom made by Klipsch for my speakers. I still preferred the clarity of my TSR-700 over the Onkyo -6050

Thought I'd put the X4700H on the list as well since the price difference was pretty narrow. Managed to get a 4700 last week and pleasantly surprised. Music sounds a lot better in stereo but the biggest difference for sure was in the atmos content like you mentioned. Beast of an amp with enough future-proof ness for years to come hopefully!

What a great Christmas surprise...a new video for the weekend! I love my Yamaha TSR-700 (RX-V6A) but you're absolutely correct to leave Yamaha off the list until their promises are realized in a firmware update. I went through a board swap (took less than 8 days to ship, get it done, shpped back) so that wasn't a big hassle. Yet here we still wait for the firmware updates to deliver features we paid for a year ago. "Nuttier than squirrel turds" - Hah! Andrew is more Texan than he wants to admit!

I had an Onkyo receiver, an older 9 channel one which, even after keeping it cool as a cucumber and surge protected, failed after only 4 years (the sound quality was superb though). Compare that the an old Pioneer 7.1 receiver that's still running strong after 16 years, ditto for Yahama. Reliability for such expensive equipment is essential for me.

I’ve been debating on the pioneer 505 or it’s twin the onkyo rz50. But decided on the Yamaha a4a for its improved power supply and amazing surround sound processing - to me the higher end Yamaha units just really make your atmos and surround channels pop.

I am an Onkyo/Integra fan so I am glad to see them take the top spot. I know it was difficult to come down to just 5 units of the hundreds that you review. Integra is said to be more installer friendly, but what are the real differences between Integra and Onkyo? And is Integra worth the additional price?

I had a Yamaha TSR 700 (rx v6a) I returned it for the Onkyo TX NR 6050 (pretty much the 6100).
Totally agree with the points about Yamaha. It sounded great but didn't have the features I needed. Onkyo came through with the Costco model.
I also tried the Denon AVR-S760H. It had bad performance with music streaming.
Buy the TX NR 6050, it's the best receiver if your budget is $600 or less.
It works with 8k/60 4k/120 RGB HDR10 on both consoles, the streaming software is great, and it sounds good with my turntable. The menus are also nice to look at. Oh and bonus, it has 100ms adjustment slower and faster for audio sync if you have eArc issues.
Perfect match for an LG CX or C1, a console, and a turntable.

Fairly informative review ! You are less likely to disappoint Yamaha as a company but ... many of us own or owned Yamaha may still like the sound/field it brought to us in decades which is quite unique vs. any other brands. I owned all brands you mentioned here and currently I have Marantz and Yamaha while my Onkyo is in the box as a spare. Connectivity is important but in the end, it is the sound matters.

Had to check out Andrew's review of the RX-V6A, since I purchased one of the earliest units released - I bought it before it came out. Being an early adopter did NOT pay off. The menu system is the buggiest I've ever used. The HDMI connection is the buggiest I've ever used. The setup is only approachable through the on-TV menus, not the front menus - which is only okay when the HDMI is fully functioning and able to display on the TV (some of the HDMI modes don't work, so if it's set wrong, you're off on a dreadful adventure). Overall, sound quality is similar to my older, better Yamaha amplifiers, but still lacking something. After numerous firmware updates, including one that bricked the unit for a short time, the unit is finally working pretty well. Except for the fact that it regularly gets confused, cuts the source I'm playing, for something like a false wake-up signal via the HDMI. It's the most confused, jumbled, Yamaha device I've ever used, to the point that I really want nothing more to do with it. It's so computer-dependent that I fear that one day, I will go to power it on, and it will simply be bricked permanently on some wonky software update. It's so ludicrous that I'm definitely looking for other options. Looks like a Yamaha, when it's working it sounds like a Yamaha, but the overall experience is NOTHING like what I'm used to from Yamaha. My ears were burned in with Yamaha amplifiers, and I may jump out of my Yamaha brand loyalty thanks to the RX-V6A ... and I would say that Andrew's review is diplomatic, with all the right queues for where this AVR falls short. My vote is NO on the RX-V line ... RX-A only, or go entirely over to Onkyo.

I didn't go with the Denon because of only 1 HDMI 2.1 port. I have a PS5 and series X. Also, I'm building a PC, and I would need all ports to be 40Gbps. Yamaha Pros is all ports are all HDMI 2.1, and I have the option to make multiple sound programs and parametric eq that you don't see in Denon or Marantz.

Hi Kristi, Andrew! Great video! I've been shopping for a few months for a good receiver and I quite stopped on the Onkyo TX-RZ50 and actually bought it but I'm on a huge waiting list... Since you talked about the Pioneer, I did take a look at the Pioneer Elite VSX-LX505 and I can still get my hands on one but the inside build quality seems to be on the cheap side? Then you also talked about the Yamaha V6A, but they now seem to have higher end RX-A6A... What are your thoughts on this model? Does it still require a firmware update for all HDMI features, as the V6A? I can also get the Denon AVR-X4700H in stock but in the end, this is getting me all mixed up! I know the Onkyo TX-RZ50 is the hot one to get but I'm debating if a 4-6 months wait is worth it?

You guys are great! I just pulled the trigger on the Pioneer Elite VSX-LX505 to replace my LX304, and it should arrive this week. I expect that I will love it, as I've had three or four Pioneer Elite's over the past couple of decades. I was thinking about the RZ50, but its not easy to find. I suspect the 505 and RZ50 are pretty much the same receiver. Denon used to be my favorite, then I had Sony ES for a while (sony ES used to be great), and I've been bouncing between Yamaha's and Pioneer Elites for a while. I find the Yamaha's to be very confusing to setup and use. I think I like the Pioneer Elites the best. One thing I miss in receivers is the ability to play video from one source, and audio from another - handy when playing a game or watching sports, but wanting to listen to music while doing so.
Question: Do you use a power conditioner? I have a Monster HTS-3500, but with the LX505, I can't fit both in my cabinet.
