Andrew. When will you get some Monitor Audio Gold 300 or Platinum 300 for review ? You really need to. Also would appreciate if you could do something a little different and interesting. If plenty of your audience is interested in active speakers, such as i, you could get hold of a pair older active speakers, network powered ones and re review or compare them to new and current models. Their are plenty of examples. Kanto, Swan, my Yamaha NX-N500. I assure you they are no toy and would be well worth a review for people who can't afford new expensive stuff. Finding older hardware like my NX-N500 are still current and give amazing sound to someone who doesn't want a lot of hassle neither separates, has no money for new stuff. Also i think a lot of viewers will also want a review on the new Yamaha R-N1000, R-N800 network receivers. I am on a path of research as a graduate from my NX-N500 all in one system to HiFi separates but we don't know how to connect the stuff together, learn impedence and ohm jargon and whether we need a pre amp with an amp. How does it all connect up ?

Mine have been working since 2016, constantly connected to my network and play the best Hi Resolution you can get via Qobuz. Qobuz has more Hi Res catalogue as standard than Tidal. I am looking for an upgrade path to a separates system. Monitor will probably be Silver 300 or Silver 500 with maybe Yamaha amp, or Audiolab. Anyways I am still saving lol. You touched on this excelling as a processor a few times in your review and, honestly, there are no good home theater processors out right now (receivers are getting a refresh, but processors are not). If using an external amplifier (I'm planning on the Purifi class D amps: probably from Buckeye paired with Ascend Acoustics ELX towers that I'm in the midst of purchasing), would you say the Cinema 70 is a top pick over your other named choices as just a home theater processor: i.e. the Onkyo or Sony (wish Sony would release a processor)? Can the RCA pre-amp outs connect to XLR inputs on the amplifier with an adapter cable? Does that cause issues or degradation? Really appreciate your input, thanks! This was timely for me. I was not able to tell your opinion when used as a processor only as the comparisons appeared to take into account the amplifier section for each.
Bought the C70 in the UK for £750 6 months ago because of all the pre outs. All of my speakers are B&O so all active speakers so this is a great solution for me. Also works really well with my Rega Planar 6 for all my vinyl. Great review by the way.
Having recently stepped up from a slimline NR-1402 Marantz to a Cinema 60, i can see the power difference BUT the slimline ran my Def-Tech bookshelves faithfully for 8 years. Having the 70's pre-amp outputs is icing on the cake.
The fact that they gave the 70 FULL preamp outs for the FIRST TIME in the Slimline Series' history is a-mazing and poses a dilemma for consumers with more simple HT. Get the 70 + an amp or step up to the 50? Hard call now.
Unless there is need for more than 7 Channels, Cinema 60 or 70 should suffice. I have the 60. A dedicated power amp compliments the setup especially if you own speakers that need a lot of power.

I picked the cinema 70 up second hand and paired it with 2 warfdale diamond 12.4 and a klipsch R121 sub and I am loving life! Viewing on a Sony A95K with an Apple TV 4K.
The pre-out flexibilty is even better than your script mentioned, though your video showed it in actuon. You can turn off all amps and run it as a full pre-amp with no amps on. However, even better than that each amp pair (plus the center alone) can have the amps turned on or off. So you can run this with a 3 channel amp powering your LCR with the internal LCR Amps off while the Marantz still powers your 4 surrounds and or heights. It is a game changer for sure!
@@GreatVomitto yes... using it as a preamp now, w Marantz Ruby as main LR amp. 70 has a built in 9-band EQ, and when combined with a high-pass filter to the mains and low to the sub, it's very useful.
I'm also thinking of buying it as preamp. I have 2.1 already. Unfortunately, it has only 1 hdmi out. I wanted to connect TV and projector. Cinema 60 is kinda over my budget.@@curt5802
Purchased it few months ago as my first receiver for 5.1 setup. Replaced Sonos Beam Gen2 + surrounds AND Cambridge Audio AXR100 stereo for vinyl. Newer used it at level >80, so no issues with power in a relatively compact living room. I think it’s great for what it provides, also price in Europe is just 700 EUR now (~$780) which makes it absolute steal.
I absolutely love my Cinema 70s, which I purchased on Superbowl Sunday (and it absolutely rocked my little media room)! I love the new Stereo 70s as well. But with Marantz, you can buy what you need with plenty of confidence.

I wonder why manufacturers do not make small and slim high powered AV receivers with good quality class-D amps. I would rather have that than a some big and hot monster.
I picked up a 70s myself about a month ago; found it on sale at around 800 euros and decided to go for those pre-outs rather than a Denon S760 (though due to housing changes only got it up and running about a week ago). It's doing a great job driving my speakers, but I may pick up a three-channel Emotiva BasX amp to drive the fronts. But with two subs to handle bass duties, which is really what calls for power, driving my speakers 80-20k hz seems to be no problem whatsoever. And the silver-gold variant I got looks killer on my tv bench, which is a bonus.
Great content as always guys. UK Pricing for the Cinema 70s is quite a bit less ($930/£730) where as the RZ50 is much more expensive over here ($1785/£1400) as is the Sony AN1000 ($1275/£1000) making the Cinema 70s a great option in the UK.
Man, I love the slim chassis! Why no one else sells receivers like that? I’ve been waiting to update my NR1710 for years ever since I got my HDMI 2.1 consoles. NR1711 didn’t feel like enough of an update and somehow I missed this release. After seeing your review yesterday it was an instabuy. And for $915 delivered it was a steal! Love the new design! And they finally changed the ugly menu. The remote has backlight now! Info button is actually useful! A few hours in I couldn’t be happier with the Cinema 70 just for the quality of life improvements alone.
I use the Marantz 70 Slimline with a Emotiva Amp for the front three ls50 Meta speakers in a 5.1 system with a Goldenear 8" Sub. The Kef speakers theoretically sound better with more power which is the rational for the Emotiva. I haven't tested without the Emotiva yet. After a break-in periods and speaker placement refinement the system is impressive in my medium size room home theater. I highly recommend the Marantz 70S. I enjoy the diminutive size and excellent IQ and SQ for movies and stereo streams. The 70S and the Emotiva generate virtually zero heat which is a nice benefit. I listen at lower volume and the sound is "rich" and dialogue is intelligible. I searched but did not find the 70S silver version in the USA.
I'm thinking about purchasing this AVR and LS50 Meta. Is there any chance you could check how do they sound in 2.0/2.1 configuration without the emotiva amp? I'm afraid that 70s won't drive them properly.
This is HILARIOUS! I literally just bought the Cinema 70S and the Emotiva BasX A7 this last week. It makes my Polk Legend Series 5.1.2 sing, effortlessly at reference levels.
I got the Cinema 70 yesterday. I update from an old Yamaha, which I had already coupled with an Outlaw 5k. As Andrew and Kristi suggested, the Cinema 70 + Outlaw 5k powering my Sonus Faber Liuto is to die for!! I did start from testing the Cinema 70 direct to the SF just for curiosity - 50W was definitely not enough. I'm 50/50 HT and Music and I concluded this was the best solution for me. If you're much higher in HT then go RZ50 at the same price. I'm now ready to upgrade projector to 4K and add 2 more audio channels!
Great review Andy! I've had this in my system for a few months now and I have to say I couldn't be happier! I've got it hooked up to my active Linn AV5125/Keilidhs/Centrik/Kans etc in a 7.1 set up. This is an upgrade from the Audiolab 8200AP which was a really good processor. The first thing to hit me was the warmth - this reminded me of the vinyl vs CD battles we used to have back in the day where the vinyl was oh, so charming and the CD was crisp and clear. But the second thing to hit me was the detail - oh, yes the 70s revealed another level of detail the Audiolab just didn't manage. To be fair, the Audiolab's soundfloor was into the concrete - no subwoofer was needed with this unit believe me! The Marantz doesn't quite go down that far hence the re-introduction of my favourite sub: The REL Q100E. And music in 2 channels will put a smile on your face. Yes, anyone thinking about using the 70s as a processor, don't hesitate. It is very, VERY good. 👍

I have an old Marantz NR1506 Slimline and have been very impressed with it powering my DefTech ProMonitor 1000’s, Martin Logan center channel while directing my DefTech ProSub 800. Only run it as a 3.1 and it is plenty for my needs. For a small system, it has a relatively big sound and is a pleasure to listen to with Apple Music Lossless via Apple TV. Sounds much better than most sound bars!

The 70 is ideal. My Integra Pre/Pro just blew itself up for the forth and last time and I just happen to have an Outlaw 5000 amp I've been using forever without a hiccup. I use an excellent fully balaned stereo preamp with fully balanced mono amps that has a home theater bypass that uses RCA inputs so the 70s should be close to an ideal solution for me in its preamp-only mode. And without the added heat from the internal amps, the product should last longer. Every receiver and pre-pro I've had over the last decade has had reliability issues due to heat in spite of them sitting on the top shelf of an open rack. I even resorted to using an AC Infinity fan in always-on mode and I still had problems. Even after upgrading my wiring with two new 20 amp circuits dedicated to the system and upgrading my panel grounding to 8 awg cabling with four additional copper grounding rods which dropped the house's ground impedence to barely detectable on my nephew's Fluke multimeter and enables the system's power conditioners to work as best as possible, yet my processor still ran red only to fail last weekend! So I just ordered the Cinema 70. Thanks for bringing the Cinema 70s to my attention Andrew!
I had a home demo of the stereo 70 with my dm602s and I was amazed how good it sounded and it gave my B&Ws a new lease of life and the built in phono stage is superb and my cds sounded fantastic the only gripe I had with it was the streaming features spent most of the time buffering
The more I think about this, this is a really smart play for those with already built-out 5.1 to 7.2 rooms, but want to upgrade to a processor, but also cannot afford or do not yet know what AMPS they want.
I also appreciate the fact that the majority of us have at most, a 7.2 channel room. If more reviewers pushed finding the best options at these options, rather constantly review 11 - 13 channel systems, it would be so much more helpful. I still think the majority of us would be fine with a 5.2 channel system for 99% of our viewing/listening experiences.
I've been waiting for this review. Earlier in the year, I got the '70 with a pair of KEF LS50's in a simple 'starter home cinema' 2.0 setup. All new so I didn't really have a reference point. After being initially unimpressed with a thin / top-endy / shouty sound out of the box, I tried the Audyssey correction and wow! That filled out the sound. Both music (usually Airplay2) and TV / movies (streamed) sound amazing. Real depth but without the booming. A very tight low end, easy to listen to mids and detailed highs. Thinking about adding a sub and some surround in the future. Nice to know the '70 can do all this for me without having to upgrade it. V happy to have this setup confirmed by you guys!

When does Marantz start to upgrade the internals on their lines. Is the 70 and 60 other than power, the same? Does the 50 model start to use higher quality parts internally? Perhaps another way to put it is when does a 70s+Emotiva Amp stop performing better than an upper line Marantz Cinema model?
For me it sounds like a killer option, if you're someone inclined into getting a starter kit that doesn't suck initially and then upgrade it down the line. For smaller homes this also should be a number one option, plenty of features, the possibility to go atmos if you so wish and drive everything from it.
Totally agree re. the full pre-amp outs! Also, the slimline dimensions are not to be ignored as A LOT of Media Consoles that aren't purpose-built for A/V gear do not have the clearance for larger receivers.
Wow, very different comparison conclusions in my country vs. the Onkyo RZ50. The RZ50 costs TWICE as much... So it's a no brainer that the Cinema 70s is the better value for money.

I have a very small living room and the space in the TV cabinet did not allow for anything taller than 13.5cm (~5"). I bought the Cinema 70 out of necessity but it was a pleasant surprise.
I’ve had the C40 for a few months now, powering my new R3 Meta & R6 Meta (and Klipsch surrounds) which I’m all very pleased with, but very almost went with the C70 and Amp as you described. I went for silver too and it looks spectacular, especially with those front light strips. It just helps give that “cinema feel” when watching a movie in dimly lit room.
If you run external amps through the cinema 70 do you still get Marantz sound signature influence on the sound? Marantz HDAM, does the external amp get the benefit of that?
I love the idea of pairing this with a 3-channel power amp to run LCR speakers, and use the Marantz internal powrered channels for any surround speakers you want to use (or likely not use, in my case). The slim chassis just makes it' easier to arrange in a room, especially if you are going to have a big chonky power amp.
Would love to see a proper dedicated three channel amp. I want to step away from 5.1 and beyond and move back to stereo, however... for TV and movies I'm reluctant to lose my centre channel. I hope Marantz is listening.
@@thomjarvis2922 I mean, there are certainly options out there for that. But most of them are built on modular platforms that accomodate up to 7 or 9 channels. So if you go with 3, you end up getting a somewhat lesser bang for the buck, considering the cost of the power supply and chassis is fixed no matter the channel count.
I’m gonna get the Cinema 70 and do exactly that. Have a 5.1.2 set up in a small dedicated room, so I’m replacing an old Onkyo with the 70. And if I need more power done the line I’ll add a 3 channel power amp.
This is what I’m doing too. My cabinet doesn’t fit an AVR inside, so I’m putting it on top. I don’t want a giant AVR on top, so instead of the cinema 60 I’m getting the 70 with a ZA3 amp for my two Def Tech tower speakers to start out. Im replacing a Samsung sound bar, so literally anything is going to sound WAY better for me 😂

I just ordered this AVR based upon, not only this review (which I value very highly), but because my existing home theater cabinet didn't have the headroom to accommodate my Sony STR-DN1080. Plus, the Sony didn't have pre-amp outputs, and even though I had already purchased a pair of Russound line level to speaker level (or the other way around, not sure) as a workaround I still didn't feel comfortable with that array, even if it did fit in my cabinetry (which it doesn't). I just received my Emotiva XPA-3 Gen3 amplifier today, and this will now take over occupancy of where the Sony AVR used to sit. The displaced Sony, which I must say is a very solid AVR of which I have zero complaints (and wouldn't be replacing it if it weren't for the size restrictions that I have with my cabinet and the lack of pre-outs) will eventually be headed to a new home. This will all be connected to a Polk Reserve series of speakers - 2 R700 front L/R, R400 center and 2 R200 rear L/R....all anchored by my new RSL Speedwoofer 12S sub (BEAST!). @@mirarid If I'm to be honest, I've not done a lot of video quality testing, but what I can confirm is that this thing is rock solid. A definite improvement over my much-beloved and since replaced Sony AVR. Anyone moving from the Sony STR-DN1080 to the Marantz Cinema 70S will NOT be disappointed (especially if they get an external, albeit not necessary, amplifier to pair with it like I did.

In my country the Marantz is 400$ cheaper and I'm not sure if the price difference is worth it, I'll use the AVR with a pair of Klipsch RP-6000F. Thank you!
You are absolutely right - it is a great package that also looks and feels great. I wish you had your review back in January - it would've spared me a lot of doubts and failed purchases and returns :) I bought mine back in January 2023 after several attempts to find a reasonable modern upgrade that could do eARC with my Sony TV, wifi streaming, and ideally drive my old B&W CMD7 pair. And not only this Cinema 70s does all that and sounds mature, the most lovely part is that its software simply works, and it does that, reliably and fast, right after my first install and update. This is some reare luck today. eARC with my Sony TV as well as Spotify, Internet radio or even remote control with Google home - it all just works, already 7 months longs with absolutely no complaints. I can only wholeheartedly recommend this Marantz if you are looking to replace an outdated amp or a receiver with a modern A+B class amp, that will serve as a central unit for the most tasks we need today - TV sound and streaming.

very attached to the Yamaha brand, I just went to Marantz to replace my Yamaha CX-A5000. what I liked was finding an amp with all the connections possible (pre-out). so I bought the 70'S and I absolutely do not regret my choice. it is paired with 2 Nurpime MCX2 & 3 power amps to power my B&W HTM1 800 center vocal and my Martin Logan Quest front speakers. the cimema 70'S is the best compromise to upgrade my system with the latest video/audio formats. Top.
Pretty impressed this has the pre-outs in such a slim model. Inputs/Outputs are the first things I look at before considering a purchase. It's getting really difficult to consider a stereo-only devices when you can get an AVR like this that handles both audio and video, stereo and surround.
Andrew, you have reviewed the Cinema 50 and now the Cinema 70. Would love a review of the Cinema 40 to see if you think if the upgraded electronics create a better sound than the 50.
I have had a predecessor of this receiver as my first surround sound receiver and was very surprised of the results it gave on my Bowers & Wilkins CM9s2 wich I drovein the BI amp mode and I had 3 CM1s2 for surround and center. The sound was really very good after some tweaking of the Audissey settings and the target curve with the app. I only bought a SR1713 because I wanted a full set of Atmos speakers and a bit more power. For everyone that is not playing extremly loud and with a small budget, this is excellent gear. 👌🏼

Once again, thanks for your informative and entertaining content! 👍 I once had a 5.1.2 home theatre powered by the predecessor to the Cinema 70, the NR 1711. This configuration powered my small to medium room very successfully. The 50 watts RMS was more than adequate, somewhat surprisingly. These days, I have upgraded to a 5.1.4 system powered by a Marantz 6015. The extra headroom is handy, as are the two extra channels, but the AVR was twice the price of the NR 1711. Nice receiver but i will stick with my RZ50 but I need a 4 or 5 channel external amp to finally get into 7.2.4 There doesn't seem to be many external amp options that I am finding online. Which external amps would you recommend?
I purched a Cinema 70S before seeing this review. I too mainly was after the fact it has pre-outs for all channels. I have a fairly small room and it doesn't have much of a problem powering my Klipsch RP-280F fronts, RP-500C II center and 4 RP-600M surround speakers (I also have dual R-120SW subs). I do plan on getting a seperate amp and I was mainly looking at the Marantz MM8077, but after seeing this, I might need to look at Emotiva or Outlaw amps. I would love to see a review of reperate home theater amps.
So you both motivated me to fix two of my powered amplifiers. They are Hitachi HMA-7500 mk II they have meters in the front, and I love them vintage look. You both fixed up an amplifer these amplifier s came from a dear friend of mine. My amplifier right now is parrasound 2250 v2 I know these Hitachi are going to sound different. Thanks for the review. I feel this is a receiver that is often overlooked for the reasons you state: most see the power rating and ignore it. I’ve owned my 70s for about 3-months now and my impressions of it have been pretty much the same as you outline in the video: great option for smaller home theater setup (I am only running a 3.1 right now) and excellent for stereo music listening. It sounds fantastic with my front L+R (RP-8000F II’s) connected via pre-out to an M7025 for extra power and it sounds pretty great. I don’t really have the room for a full-blown surround setup and really just wanted something simple yet clean and powerful enough to sound great for movies and music. Plus it feels good to know I can easily expand when need to. And, I wish I could have purchased in silver. ;)
So the Onkyo 50 is definitely a better receiver and then you’re saying that the Sony 5000 ES is better to? Because I really love the review of the 7000 but I don’t need that many channels.
I managed to get this for 200 bucks off, brand new a couple weeks ago. The shop had an open box, but sold it just before I called in, so the sales guy offered me a brand new one for slightly more than the open box. Now I need to upgrade my speakers from my existing Pioneer HTIAB set up from 2004. Thinking either those Focals, maybe KEF LS50, or something more budget friendly like the KEF Q150, dali spetkor, psb imagine, etc. But even with the old little Pioneer speakers, this baby slams.

This product is also a nice fit for setups with active loudspeakers. Its a nicely flexible product while not being too big. I used the older NR1607 like that and always wished I could shut off the amps.

I was able to get this for about 700€ (in silver^^), I thought it was a pretty steep discount for such a new product. So basically using the pre outs to connect to external power amplifiers will increase the sound quality, since the Marantz Cinema 70 will not use its own amplification at all (just the in-built DACs that it has), is that correct? If so, isn't that option always better than any other AV receiver then (which don't have pre outs)? You were only talking about "more power" but won't external power amplifiers have better sound quality as well? Do you know of a solution that will work with external DACs as well?
Andrew, Planning to build a 5.1.2 home theater in my living room and want to small receiver and looking at this receiver. Can I pair this cinema 70s 8 ohms with Sonus Fauber Lumina 2 and Lumina center which are 4 ohms ?
As far as the Pre-amp outs on the Cinema line, Cinema 40, 50, 60, and 70s. Do you feel they all have the same output quality as far as sound and noise? My plan is to go with a Cinema 70 and either a 3 channel Anthem MCA 325 Gen 2 or even a McIntosh MC152 for stereo L/R and the Cinema 70 for the center channel. Currently I have Revel Performa3 F208 on the Left/Right and their C205 center channel. 95 percent of my listening is 2 channels with the other 5 percent basic TV/movies. This video had a significant influence on purchasing the Cinema 70s. The sound of it is very good but would have liked it to have a ESS DAC chip. I like a more technical/reference sound. I like I have the option to run it as a pre-amp and use a separate amp. I'm running a 2.1 setup with the Arendal 1723 bookshelf and SVS micro3000
Love what is on offer these days in terms of hifi, however I really, really wish true quadraphonic sound receivers, integrated amps would make a comeback. Miss 4 full amplifiers in one box, w a myriad of options for speaker layouts. Love the reviews, big up to the both of you.
I have this AV reciever and run it with Polk ES60 towers, ES35 centre, ES15 surrounds, XT90 atmos speakers and an XT12 sub (im looking at new height channels and a sub when i get a bit of spare cash), I wanted the ES55 towers but the ES60s were being sold for £100 less, i was unsure if i would need an additional amp to power the ES60 towers but the Marantz does it effortlessly. Its a great reciever and fits into almost any cabinet, the majority of those that say it is underpowered (at least in an average UK size living room) have probably never owned one.
This AVR would be my choice if I ever replace my stereo setup in my bedroom. It looks great, is small and I don’t need much power for that purpose. I was waiting for this review. Thanks👍🏽
i've paired the Silver Marantz Cinema 70 with my Polk XT60 / XT30 / XT20 home theater and it sounds great. Are the XT60's a good match for the Cinema 70?
I use its predecessor the N1711 and feed its front outputs into a higher quality 8006 which uses a power direct mode hence acting like a power amp. Driving a pair of 6 ohm AE500 stand mount speakers on solidsteel stands and each with a REL sub using the high level cable it’s a great AV option. As the 8006 is pure analogue I use that as my stereo amp and a small external DAC from iFi for streaming Apple Music. All nice, simple, future proof and hopefully long lasting. The 8006 is made in Japan and weighs a ton. Sounds great still despite being a few years old now. I believe the new stereo 50 is very similar so look forward to you reviewing that maybe with AEs or B&W 705s.

You mentioned not having built in room correction, but I assume as you mentioned with a measuring tape and SPL you can still manually do room correction within settings? Excellent review as always! What is the better set up, Marantz Cinema 50 or Cinema 70 paired with Emotiva amp? I use Martin Logan Motion F10 and Martin Logan Center and surrounds. I want to upgrade my current receiver - SR 5011. No space/need for a sub as at the moment this set up is in a small family room.
For sure a game changer with full preouts. I own a slim Marantz reciver and in a medium to small room its great. I have tower speakers that are 4 ohms as fronts with a Rotel power amp, opens up the stereo sound. The Rotel both adds more clarity and power where the Marantz amps struggle. If I could hook up more channels with power amp there would be no reason to consider upgrading for a long while. And by offloading some of the power to other amps it should allow the remaining chanels more power
I'm wondering how does adding a power amp work in practice? I love the simplicity of everything working with a single receiver. For example I'm watching a movie on apple tv using all channels, then I switch to spotify connect from my phone. Will this automatically switch to 2 channels, turn on the preamp only mode and turn on the power amp? Or do I have to do these manually.

Andrew. When will you get some Monitor Audio Gold 300 or Platinum 300 for review ? You really need to. Also would appreciate if you could do something a little different and interesting.
If plenty of your audience is interested in active speakers, such as i, you could get hold of a pair older active speakers, network powered ones and re review or compare them to new and current models. Their are plenty of examples. Kanto, Swan, my Yamaha NX-N500.
I assure you they are no toy and would be well worth a review for people who can't afford new expensive stuff. Finding older hardware like my NX-N500 are still current and give amazing sound to someone who doesn't want a lot of hassle neither separates, has no money for new stuff.
Also i think a lot of viewers will also want a review on the new Yamaha R-N1000, R-N800 network receivers. I am on a path of research as a graduate from my NX-N500 all in one system to HiFi separates but we don't know how to connect the stuff together, learn impedence and ohm jargon and whether we need a pre amp with an amp. How does it all connect up ?

You touched on this excelling as a processor a few times in your review and, honestly, there are no good home theater processors out right now (receivers are getting a refresh, but processors are not). If using an external amplifier (I'm planning on the Purifi class D amps: probably from Buckeye paired with Ascend Acoustics ELX towers that I'm in the midst of purchasing), would you say the Cinema 70 is a top pick over your other named choices as just a home theater processor: i.e. the Onkyo or Sony (wish Sony would release a processor)?
Can the RCA pre-amp outs connect to XLR inputs on the amplifier with an adapter cable? Does that cause issues or degradation?

Bought the C70 in the UK for £750 6 months ago because of all the pre outs. All of my speakers are B&O so all active speakers so this is a great solution for me. Also works really well with my Rega Planar 6 for all my vinyl. Great review by the way.

Having recently stepped up from a slimline NR-1402 Marantz to a Cinema 60, i can see the power difference BUT the slimline ran my Def-Tech bookshelves faithfully for 8 years. Having the 70's pre-amp outputs is icing on the cake.
The fact that they gave the 70 FULL preamp outs for the FIRST TIME in the Slimline Series' history is a-mazing and poses a dilemma for consumers with more simple HT. Get the 70 + an amp or step up to the 50? Hard call now.
Unless there is need for more than 7 Channels, Cinema 60 or 70 should suffice. I have the 60. A dedicated power amp compliments the setup especially if you own speakers that need a lot of power.

I just installed a Cinema 60 yesterday and was blown away. The 60 is a better deal as it’s twice the power for not much more.
The point of this product is to give us a slimmer receiver but with some of the power and options of the big boys. The 60 is supposed to be better.
I picked the cinema 70 up second hand and paired it with 2 warfdale diamond 12.4 and a klipsch R121 sub and I am loving life! Viewing on a Sony A95K with an Apple TV 4K.
The pre-out flexibilty is even better than your script mentioned, though your video showed it in actuon. You can turn off all amps and run it as a full pre-amp with no amps on. However, even better than that each amp pair (plus the center alone) can have the amps turned on or off. So you can run this with a 3 channel amp powering your LCR with the internal LCR Amps off while the Marantz still powers your 4 surrounds and or heights. It is a game changer for sure!
Perfect... I'll be using it as preamp. The mains LR will be powered by external amp, and any C and surround will be handled by the 70s.

@@GreatVomitto yes... using it as a preamp now, w Marantz Ruby as main LR amp. 70 has a built in 9-band EQ, and when combined with a high-pass filter to the mains and low to the sub, it's very useful.
I'm also thinking of buying it as preamp. I have 2.1 already. Unfortunately, it has only 1 hdmi out. I wanted to connect TV and projector. Cinema 60 is kinda over my budget.@@curt5802
Purchased it few months ago as my first receiver for 5.1 setup. Replaced Sonos Beam Gen2 + surrounds AND Cambridge Audio AXR100 stereo for vinyl. Newer used it at level >80, so no issues with power in a relatively compact living room. I think it’s great for what it provides, also price in Europe is just 700 EUR now (~$780) which makes it absolute steal.
I absolutely love my Cinema 70s, which I purchased on Superbowl Sunday (and it absolutely rocked my little media room)! I love the new Stereo 70s as well. But with Marantz, you can buy what you need with plenty of confidence.

I picked up a 70s myself about a month ago; found it on sale at around 800 euros and decided to go for those pre-outs rather than a Denon S760 (though due to housing changes only got it up and running about a week ago). It's doing a great job driving my speakers, but I may pick up a three-channel Emotiva BasX amp to drive the fronts. But with two subs to handle bass duties, which is really what calls for power, driving my speakers 80-20k hz seems to be no problem whatsoever. And the silver-gold variant I got looks killer on my tv bench, which is a bonus.
Full pre amp out and slim line is the real deal for this AVR. Upgradeable with external amp and use as processor.
Great content as always guys. UK Pricing for the Cinema 70s is quite a bit less ($930/£730) where as the RZ50 is much more expensive over here ($1785/£1400) as is the Sony AN1000 ($1275/£1000) making the Cinema 70s a great option in the UK.

NR1711 didn’t feel like enough of an update and somehow I missed this release. After seeing your review yesterday it was an instabuy. And for $915 delivered it was a steal!
Love the new design! And they finally changed the ugly menu. The remote has backlight now! Info button is actually useful! A few hours in I couldn’t be happier with the Cinema 70 just for the quality of life improvements alone.
I use the Marantz 70 Slimline with a Emotiva Amp for the front three ls50 Meta speakers in a 5.1 system with a Goldenear 8" Sub. The Kef speakers theoretically sound better with more power which is the rational for the Emotiva. I haven't tested without the Emotiva yet. After a break-in periods and speaker placement refinement the system is impressive in my medium size room home theater. I highly recommend the Marantz 70S. I enjoy the diminutive size and excellent IQ and SQ for movies and stereo streams. The 70S and the Emotiva generate virtually zero heat which is a nice benefit. I listen at lower volume and the sound is "rich" and dialogue is intelligible. I searched but did not find the 70S silver version in the USA.
I'm thinking about purchasing this AVR and LS50 Meta. Is there any chance you could check how do they sound in 2.0/2.1 configuration without the emotiva amp? I'm afraid that 70s won't drive them properly.
This is HILARIOUS! I literally just bought the Cinema 70S and the Emotiva BasX A7 this last week. It makes my Polk Legend Series 5.1.2 sing, effortlessly at reference levels.

As Andrew and Kristi suggested, the Cinema 70 + Outlaw 5k powering my Sonus Faber Liuto is to die for!!
I did start from testing the Cinema 70 direct to the SF just for curiosity - 50W was definitely not enough.
I'm 50/50 HT and Music and I concluded this was the best solution for me. If you're much higher in HT then go RZ50 at the same price.
I'm now ready to upgrade projector to 4K and add 2 more audio channels!
I own this receiver and I absolutely love it. I want to dd the BASX 3 later this year.
Great review Andy! I've had this in my system for a few months now and I have to say I couldn't be happier! I've got it hooked up to my active Linn AV5125/Keilidhs/Centrik/Kans etc in a 7.1 set up. This is an upgrade from the Audiolab 8200AP which was a really good processor. The first thing to hit me was the warmth - this reminded me of the vinyl vs CD battles we used to have back in the day where the vinyl was oh, so charming and the CD was crisp and clear. But the second thing to hit me was the detail - oh, yes the 70s revealed another level of detail the Audiolab just didn't manage. To be fair, the Audiolab's soundfloor was into the concrete - no subwoofer was needed with this unit believe me! The Marantz doesn't quite go down that far hence the re-introduction of my favourite sub: The REL Q100E. And music in 2 channels will put a smile on your face. Yes, anyone thinking about using the 70s as a processor, don't hesitate. It is very, VERY good. 👍

I have an old Marantz NR1506 Slimline and have been very impressed with it powering my DefTech ProMonitor 1000’s, Martin Logan center channel while directing my DefTech ProSub 800. Only run it as a 3.1 and it is plenty for my needs. For a small system, it has a relatively big sound and is a pleasure to listen to with Apple Music Lossless via Apple TV. Sounds much better than most sound bars!

Have been a Marantz fanboy since the 80’s. Happy to see the company producing a quality product at more than one price point.
The 70 is ideal. My Integra Pre/Pro just blew itself up for the forth and last time and I just happen to have an Outlaw 5000 amp I've been using forever without a hiccup. I use an excellent fully balaned stereo preamp with fully balanced mono amps that has a home theater bypass that uses RCA inputs so the 70s should be close to an ideal solution for me in its preamp-only mode. And without the added heat from the internal amps, the product should last longer. Every receiver and pre-pro I've had over the last decade has had reliability issues due to heat in spite of them sitting on the top shelf of an open rack. I even resorted to using an AC Infinity fan in always-on mode and I still had problems.
Even after upgrading my wiring with two new 20 amp circuits dedicated to the system and upgrading my panel grounding to 8 awg cabling with four additional copper grounding rods which dropped the house's ground impedence to barely detectable on my nephew's Fluke multimeter and enables the system's power conditioners to work as best as possible, yet my processor still ran red only to fail last weekend!
So I just ordered the Cinema 70. Thanks for bringing the Cinema 70s to my attention Andrew!
I had a home demo of the stereo 70 with my dm602s and I was amazed how good it sounded and it gave my B&Ws a new lease of life and the built in phono stage is superb and my cds sounded fantastic the only gripe I had with it was the streaming features spent most of the time buffering
The more I think about this, this is a really smart play for those with already built-out 5.1 to 7.2 rooms, but want to upgrade to a processor, but also cannot afford or do not yet know what AMPS they want.
I also appreciate the fact that the majority of us have at most, a 7.2 channel room. If more reviewers pushed finding the best options at these options, rather constantly review 11 - 13 channel systems, it would be so much more helpful.
I still think the majority of us would be fine with a 5.2 channel system for 99% of our viewing/listening experiences.
I've been waiting for this review. Earlier in the year, I got the '70 with a pair of KEF LS50's in a simple 'starter home cinema' 2.0 setup. All new so I didn't really have a reference point.
After being initially unimpressed with a thin / top-endy / shouty sound out of the box, I tried the Audyssey correction and wow! That filled out the sound. Both music (usually Airplay2) and TV / movies (streamed) sound amazing. Real depth but without the booming. A very tight low end, easy to listen to mids and detailed highs.
Thinking about adding a sub and some surround in the future. Nice to know the '70 can do all this for me without having to upgrade it.

When does Marantz start to upgrade the internals on their lines. Is the 70 and 60 other than power, the same? Does the 50 model start to use higher quality parts internally? Perhaps another way to put it is when does a 70s+Emotiva Amp stop performing better than an upper line Marantz Cinema model?
For me it sounds like a killer option, if you're someone inclined into getting a starter kit that doesn't suck initially and then upgrade it down the line. For smaller homes this also should be a number one option, plenty of features, the possibility to go atmos if you so wish and drive everything from it.
Totally agree re. the full pre-amp outs! Also, the slimline dimensions are not to be ignored as A LOT of Media Consoles that aren't purpose-built for A/V gear do not have the clearance for larger receivers.
Wow, very different comparison conclusions in my country vs. the Onkyo RZ50. The RZ50 costs TWICE as much... So it's a no brainer that the Cinema 70s is the better value for money.

I have a very small living room and the space in the TV cabinet did not allow for anything taller than 13.5cm (~5"). I bought the Cinema 70 out of necessity but it was a pleasant surprise.
I’ve had the C40 for a few months now, powering my new R3 Meta & R6 Meta (and Klipsch surrounds) which I’m all very pleased with, but very almost went with the C70 and Amp as you described. I went for silver too and it looks spectacular, especially with those front light strips. It just helps give that “cinema feel” when watching a movie in dimly lit room.
If you run external amps through the cinema 70 do you still get Marantz sound signature influence on the sound? Marantz HDAM, does the external amp get the benefit of that?
I love the idea of pairing this with a 3-channel power amp to run LCR speakers, and use the Marantz internal powrered channels for any surround speakers you want to use (or likely not use, in my case). The slim chassis just makes it' easier to arrange in a room, especially if you are going to have a big chonky power amp.
Would love to see a proper dedicated three channel amp. I want to step away from 5.1 and beyond and move back to stereo, however... for TV and movies I'm reluctant to lose my centre channel. I hope Marantz is listening.
@@thomjarvis2922 I mean, there are certainly options out there for that. But most of them are built on modular platforms that accomodate up to 7 or 9 channels. So if you go with 3, you end up getting a somewhat lesser bang for the buck, considering the cost of the power supply and chassis is fixed no matter the channel count.
I’m gonna get the Cinema 70 and do exactly that. Have a 5.1.2 set up in a small dedicated room, so I’m replacing an old Onkyo with the 70. And if I need more power done the line I’ll add a 3 channel power amp.
This is what I’m doing too. My cabinet doesn’t fit an AVR inside, so I’m putting it on top. I don’t want a giant AVR on top, so instead of the cinema 60 I’m getting the 70 with a ZA3 amp for my two Def Tech tower speakers to start out. Im replacing a Samsung sound bar, so literally anything is going to sound WAY better for me 😂

The more video's i watch of yours the more i rely on Kristi's insight. Good review. I've been on the fence between Marantz Cinema 50 and Sony 5000es - This review tells me that Sony is a better product for surround/home theater AV. I will say, i love the look of the Marantz line
I just ordered this AVR based upon, not only this review (which I value very highly), but because my existing home theater cabinet didn't have the headroom to accommodate my Sony STR-DN1080. Plus, the Sony didn't have pre-amp outputs, and even though I had already purchased a pair of Russound line level to speaker level (or the other way around, not sure) as a workaround I still didn't feel comfortable with that array, even if it did fit in my cabinetry (which it doesn't).
I just received my Emotiva XPA-3 Gen3 amplifier today, and this will now take over occupancy of where the Sony AVR used to sit. The displaced Sony, which I must say is a very solid AVR of which I have zero complaints (and wouldn't be replacing it if it weren't for the size restrictions that I have with my cabinet and the lack of pre-outs) will eventually be headed to a new home.
This will all be connected to a Polk Reserve series of speakers - 2 R700 front L/R, R400 center and 2 R200 rear L/R....all anchored by my new RSL Speedwoofer 12S sub (BEAST!). Can't wait to get it all connected.

@@mirarid If I'm to be honest, I've not done a lot of video quality testing, but what I can confirm is that this thing is rock solid. A definite improvement over my much-beloved and since replaced Sony AVR. Anyone moving from the Sony STR-DN1080 to the Marantz Cinema 70S will NOT be disappointed (especially if they get an external, albeit not necessary, amplifier to pair with it like I did.

I would think a good 3 channel amp would be all you need with this (LF C RF). This should free up enough electrons for the surround/Atmos channels.

I bought mine back in January 2023 after several attempts to find a reasonable modern upgrade that could do eARC with my Sony TV, wifi streaming, and ideally drive my old B&W CMD7 pair.
And not only this Cinema 70s does all that and sounds mature, the most lovely part is that its software simply works, and it does that, reliably and fast, right after my first install and update. This is some reare luck today.
eARC with my Sony TV as well as Spotify, Internet radio or even remote control with Google home - it all just works, already 7 months longs with absolutely no complaints.
I can only wholeheartedly recommend this Marantz if you are looking to replace an outdated amp or a receiver with a modern A+B class amp, that will serve as a central unit for the most tasks we need today - TV sound and streaming.

This is the one pair it with 3 crown amps and you got a killer system for your money love it because you can use it as a preamp fully not concerned about the power power is cheap

very attached to the Yamaha brand, I just went to Marantz to replace my Yamaha CX-A5000.
what I liked was finding an amp with all the connections possible (pre-out).
so I bought the 70'S and I absolutely do not regret my choice.
it is paired with 2 Nurpime MCX2 & 3 power amps to power my B&W HTM1 800 center vocal and my Martin Logan Quest front speakers.
the cimema 70'S is the best compromise to upgrade my system with the latest video/audio formats.

With external amplification, could this match the Anthem.
Pretty impressed this has the pre-outs in such a slim model. Inputs/Outputs are the first things I look at before considering a purchase. It's getting really difficult to consider a stereo-only devices when you can get an AVR like this that handles both audio and video, stereo and surround.
Andrew, you have reviewed the Cinema 50 and now the Cinema 70. Would love a review of the Cinema 40 to see if you think if the upgraded electronics create a better sound than the 50.

I have had a predecessor of this receiver as my first surround sound receiver and was very surprised of the results it gave on my Bowers & Wilkins CM9s2 wich I drovein the BI amp mode and I had 3 CM1s2 for surround and center. The sound was really very good after some tweaking of the Audissey settings and the target curve with the app. I only bought a SR1713 because I wanted a full set of Atmos speakers and a bit more power.
For everyone that is not playing extremly loud and with a small budget, this is excellent gear. 👌🏼

I once had a 5.1.2 home theatre powered by the predecessor to the Cinema 70, the NR 1711. This configuration powered my small to medium room very successfully. The 50 watts RMS was more than adequate, somewhat surprisingly.
These days, I have upgraded to a 5.1.4 system powered by a Marantz 6015. The extra headroom is handy, as are the two extra channels, but the AVR was twice the price of the NR 1711.

I purched a Cinema 70S before seeing this review. I too mainly was after the fact it has pre-outs for all channels. I have a fairly small room and it doesn't have much of a problem powering my Klipsch RP-280F fronts, RP-500C II center and 4 RP-600M surround speakers (I also have dual R-120SW subs). I do plan on getting a seperate amp and I was mainly looking at the Marantz MM8077, but after seeing this, I might need to look at Emotiva or Outlaw amps. I would love to see a review of reperate home theater amps.
It being so close in price to the rz50 makes the rz50 a no-brainer pick. It's a tremendous value in avr's.

So you both motivated me to fix two of my powered amplifiers. They are Hitachi HMA-7500 mk II they have meters in the front, and I love them vintage look. You both fixed up an amplifer these amplifier s came from a dear friend of mine. My amplifier right now is parrasound 2250 v2 I know these Hitachi are going to sound different. I’ve owned my 70s for about 3-months now and my impressions of it have been pretty much the same as you outline in the video: great option for smaller home theater setup (I am only running a 3.1 right now) and excellent for stereo music listening. It sounds fantastic with my front L+R (RP-8000F II’s) connected via pre-out to an M7025 for extra power and it sounds pretty great. I don’t really have the room for a full-blown surround setup and really just wanted something simple yet clean and powerful enough to sound great for movies and music. Plus it feels good to know I can easily expand when need to. And, I wish I could have purchased in silver. ;)

So the Onkyo 50 is definitely a better receiver and then you’re saying that the Sony 5000 ES is better to? Because I really love the review of the 7000 but I don’t need that many channels.
I managed to get this for 200 bucks off, brand new a couple weeks ago.
The shop had an open box, but sold it just before I called in, so the sales guy offered me a brand new one for slightly more than the open box.
Now I need to upgrade my speakers from my existing Pioneer HTIAB set up from 2004. Thinking either those Focals, maybe KEF LS50, or something more budget friendly like the KEF Q150, dali spetkor, psb imagine, etc.
But even with the old little Pioneer speakers, this baby slams.

This product is also a nice fit for setups with active loudspeakers. Its a nicely flexible product while not being too big. I used the older NR1607 like that and always wished I could shut off the amps.

So basically using the pre outs to connect to external power amplifiers will increase the sound quality, since the Marantz Cinema 70 will not use its own amplification at all (just the in-built DACs that it has), is that correct? If so, isn't that option always better than any other AV receiver then (which don't have pre outs)? You were only talking about "more power" but won't external power amplifiers have better sound quality as well?
Do you know of a solution that will work with external DACs as well?
Andrew, Planning to build a 5.1.2 home theater in my living room and want to small receiver and looking at this receiver. Can I pair this cinema 70s 8 ohms with Sonus Fauber Lumina 2 and Lumina center which are 4 ohms ?
As far as the Pre-amp outs on the Cinema line, Cinema 40, 50, 60, and 70s. Do you feel they all have the same output quality as far as sound and noise? My plan is to go with a Cinema 70 and either a 3 channel Anthem MCA 325 Gen 2 or even a McIntosh MC152 for stereo L/R and the Cinema 70 for the center channel. Currently I have Revel Performa3 F208 on the Left/Right and their C205 center channel. 95 percent of my listening is 2 channels with the other 5 percent basic TV/movies. Thanks for any input and I enjoy watching all of your videos. Doug
This video had a significant influence on purchasing the Cinema 70s. The sound of it is very good but would have liked it to have a ESS DAC chip. I like a more technical/reference sound. I like I have the option to run it as a pre-amp and use a separate amp. I'm running a 2.1 setup with the Arendal 1723 bookshelf and SVS micro3000
Love what is on offer these days in terms of hifi, however I really, really wish true quadraphonic sound receivers, integrated amps would make a comeback. Miss 4 full amplifiers in one box, w a myriad of options for speaker layouts. Love the reviews, big up to the both of you.
I have this AV reciever and run it with Polk ES60 towers, ES35 centre, ES15 surrounds, XT90 atmos speakers and an XT12 sub (im looking at new height channels and a sub when i get a bit of spare cash), I wanted the ES55 towers but the ES60s were being sold for £100 less, i was unsure if i would need an additional amp to power the ES60 towers but the Marantz does it effortlessly.
Its a great reciever and fits into almost any cabinet, the majority of those that say it is underpowered (at least in an average UK size living room) have probably never owned one.
This AVR would be my choice if I ever replace my stereo setup in my bedroom.
It looks great, is small and I don’t need much power for that purpose.

Marantz has long been my goto product. Never a bad moment.
I use its predecessor the N1711 and feed its front outputs into a higher quality 8006 which uses a power direct mode hence acting like a power amp. Driving a pair of 6 ohm AE500 stand mount speakers on solidsteel stands and each with a REL sub using the high level cable it’s a great AV option. As the 8006 is pure analogue I use that as my stereo amp and a small external DAC from iFi for streaming Apple Music. All nice, simple, future proof and hopefully long lasting. The 8006 is made in Japan and weighs a ton. Sounds great still despite being a few years old now. I believe the new stereo 50 is very similar so look forward to you reviewing that maybe with AEs or B&W 705s.

You mentioned not having built in room correction, but I assume as you mentioned with a measuring tape and SPL you can still manually do room correction within settings? Looking to bring my Pioneer VSX-90 into the modern age and this checks all of the boxes for my 5.1.2 system especially with future expandability.

I have 3 of the previous versions of this. They are all amazing. Huge AV receivers don't go well in a minimalist room design, these do.
Excellent review as always! What is the better set up, Marantz Cinema 50 or Cinema 70 paired with Emotiva amp? I use Martin Logan Motion F10 and Martin Logan Center and surrounds. I want to upgrade my current receiver - SR 5011. No space/need for a sub as at the moment this set up is in a small family room.
For sure a game changer with full preouts. I own a slim Marantz reciver and in a medium to small room its great. I have tower speakers that are 4 ohms as fronts with a Rotel power amp, opens up the stereo sound. The Rotel both adds more clarity and power where the Marantz amps struggle. If I could hook up more channels with power amp there would be no reason to consider upgrading for a long while. And by offloading some of the power to other amps it should allow the remaining chanels more power
I'm wondering how does adding a power amp work in practice? I love the simplicity of everything working with a single receiver.
For example I'm watching a movie on apple tv using all channels, then I switch to spotify connect from my phone. Will this automatically switch to 2 channels, turn on the preamp only mode and turn on the power amp? Or do I have to do these manually.
