The waxed matches are not meant to be used with a striker, @Whitetail Survival. Those are “strike anywhere” matches that can be struck on practically any rough & abrasive surface.
I thought strike anywhere matches made their way out of production because they had some accidental fires but I guess not I will have to try another one out on the brick down there! Thanks for the advice I haven’t seen a strike anywhere match for like 5 years
I bought one of these at Goodwill. I have it displayed. Such a cool concept to manufacture a survival kit in what is in essence a sardine can. For a few bucks… it’s a cool little kit. Another entertaining video. Many thanks.
It’s nice you can still pick these up on Amazon in new condition. I also reviewed a zombie kit like this and another generic one that was just called “survival kit in a sardine can” they are cool I just wish they had a lid for them even a plastic lid like on a cat food can would work
Yes I have a 110 and a 119 I love them two blades they are definitely a knife everyone should have. The kit though is still produced today you can buy it on Amazon which is awesome to see
Absolutely! It’s a great supplemental kit. It would be awesome to see a lid made for these tins. They make them for the cat food tins. It would be nice to have a way to reseal it up
Don't forget the wonders of that lid. A cutting tool, pull tab fishing hook, mini cooking pan if ya fold up the edges, a plate, a reflector for a candle. You just have to be in a survival mindset
Absolutely! Creativity is one of the key factors or survival. If you can be inventive you can make more than one use out of almost anything. I did mention in the video about making the lid into a cutting tool or mini frying pan right in the beginning when I opened it hopefully I didn’t edit that out.
That’s awesome to hear! I like this kit it is very nostalgic and it’s also still made today which is awesome. One of the kits I remember most when I was younger was the SOL origin kit I thought it was awesome when all the components were locked into the shell. I had some before that but it was the most interesting to me. I bought one and reviewed it on the channel already
@whitetailsurvival2430 yeah the Origin was my first higher price kit I loved the idea of it I just wished the storage compartment was a little deeper but then it would have been more bulky which I don't personally mind
3:06 - that's how it's done! 🤯Didn't know that, I broke them all the time... 😅Never stop learning, I guess 🥳 Thanks for the review! I like the kit, for what it is. The content of it is nice. I would upgrade it a little, and put it in a different small container, which can be closed again. It seems like a great backup for a backup because it's so small. Much love from Germany, and have a great 2025! ❤
Haha yeah that’s the easiest way that I have found to strike them kind of matches. You are right about that though it’s a great last ditch backup kit or supplement to a larger or edc pack. I would be awesome to see a plastic lid for these tins like how a catffood tin has. Thanks for watching I do appreciate the views and comments the entire way from Germany!
If your heart isn't set on every kit being complete, this has a lot of neat stuff . I like it . Those are strike anywhere matches, you have to strike them on a rough surface like a brick
I will try it on one of the bricks in the basement it didn’t say that on the contents list it just said waterproof matches that would definitely change my mind if they were strike anywhere
Yeah. Green tips have been around for what, fifteen to twenty years? ALL strike anywheres before that were red with a white tip. Brent, the wax on the wood matches destroyed the striker on the book matches. Those were just fine, just the striker was waxed over. And just to be honest, ALL waxed matches are destroyed in my opinion. You had more success than I ever had!
Coghlan's sardine tin survival kit is a classic! Though it gave rise to many snarky comments that you'd be better off with the original can of sardines, I can't see any survival situation that would not be improved by all this helpful stuff. But can you imagine sitting under a tree in a wet snowfall trying to get those matches to light. Yikes. Because it can't be altered my idea for this kit is to put it in an edc pocket organizer pouch with a mylar poncho and a few key additions like a knife, flashlight, lifeboat matches & Bic, some medications/first aid, and water purification tabs or a filter straw. Thanks WS for reviewing an old favorite!!
You always have an awesome additions list thanks for coming back and commenting again! I do appreciate it a lot! It’s a great idea to add this to a larger kit with a few more substantial items. Fire and shelter are very important this time of year with the snow and sub freezing temperatures it’s a priority for sure!
Yea there’s some usable gear in there the only thing that was upsetting was the matches they didn’t work so well I think a separate striker would have made a huge difference. The cube worked really well and burnt for a long time I was happy with most of it
That’s a great idea. Normally there is a piece of paper or something to write on but it wasn’t this time. It’s not that you can’t use it to write on other stuff or mark lengths to cut branches even or anything else creative I just thought it was odd to not have paper
Is the paper that the duct tape stuck to waxed? It would be nice if that material would also be available for “note taking” with the included pencil. One very important use for paper and pencil/pen in many “survival situations” is to leave a note. At a vehicle or crash site etc. letting rescuers know that you were there and have set off in a certain direction at a certain time. If I was the “brains” or designer of that kit. I would make the paper a highly visible color. Better to serve as a “flag” to attract attention to it.
No there’s two more by other brands that look exactly the same one was the zombie survival kit in a tin and the other was literally just called survival kit in a can so this one is totally new
I guess just a redundancy I would prefer a set of matches and a ferro rod if possible eliminate one set of matches and add the ferro rod. It would be fine in a pinch but that’s how I would like to see it!
Definitely cool to see what’s inside I like to see what they put in them! This is still commercially available isn’t there something in your system that makes you wanna buy one on eBay for 20 bucks just for nostalgia?
Not sure if this kit floats, but there's one that claims it does. One advantage to this "sealed design", is it creates a psychological barrier to opening it unless necessary. The downside is, you can't easily verify all the contents are there (most people don't have the technology to see through aluminum containers) and you can't check the integrity of the items.
Yes that’s why it’s nice to have someone open one to watch. It doesn’t help with your specific kit but it does give you a general idea of what’s in there. I would say it would float being sealed and the extra airspace in the tin. It’s not real heavy.
Price is ridiculous, usable items are too, better kits can be made on your own for cheaper better quality items, No longer a financially feasible item for the uselessness that it gives.
I’m not sure how long it’s been since you built a survival kit but you can buy this kit on eBay sometimes for 18-21 dollars I don’t believe you can build a kit for less than that with all new items. If you can please humor me with a reply of the items and prices and I will build the kit and show it for you and tag you in the video!
Not going to argue any point here, but I used to make and sell kits at gun shows all over the south. Wife and I. You can make and sell a kit similar to that cheaper on the supplies and equipment....the diff comes in your wages per hour you add in. These kits work out so well to the public because we don't have to make our own. Experts like all of us here on these forums can make them better and cheaper....the "civilian" market just buys them and stashes them and never uses them.
Well....was going to make one up. Lost two hours of typing when I closed my tablet on a restroom run. A decent can with lid....American Science and Surplus. They have a.tin can that's a bit over twice the vol of that Coghlans can. $1.25. Strip it or paint it. The Coghlans golf pencil is approx 20 cents....A wooden golf pencil is 8 cents. The fire tinder cubes are cubes cut off the Coghlans tinder sticks. The sticks run $3 for twelve. A common aluminum screech whistle is 30 cents. A 300 box of strike.anywheres is $3. Needles, 13 cents, nails 5 cents. The cost just about doubles if you add in your labor, though.

@ they’re not sold in supermarkets because there have been accidents but they are still available for specialised applications like this.
I bought one of these at Goodwill. I have it displayed. Such a cool concept to manufacture a survival kit in what is in essence a sardine can. For a few bucks… it’s a cool little kit. Another entertaining video. Many thanks.

If you collect these little kits, it's a must-have. Like a Buck 110 for a knife collection.
Yes I have a 110 and a 119 I love them two blades they are definitely a knife everyone should have. The kit though is still produced today you can buy it on Amazon which is awesome to see
Looks like a really good baseline kit that you could repackage and add anything that's missing + comfort items
Absolutely! It’s a great supplemental kit. It would be awesome to see a lid made for these tins. They make them for the cat food tins. It would be nice to have a way to reseal it up

@whitetailsurvival2430 it was very informative. Some people see that tin as a death trap. Its what you know that makes it useful
Thanks!
No problem thank you again i appreciate it!
This is still one of the most intriguing Kits I ever bought and I was a kid so I believe this is the kit that got me into survival and making kits
That’s awesome to hear! I like this kit it is very nostalgic and it’s also still made today which is awesome. @@whitetailsurvival2430 or a rock or wood .. something a little rough
I doubt that, strike anywhere have green tips.
@squirrelpower1666 the ones in this video are identical to the ones I've seen since I was little
Yeah. Green tips have been around for what, fifteen to twenty years? ALL strike anywheres before that were red with a white tip.

Nice to see how these things really perform.
Soon I’m going to go back through and test each part individually it should be fun
Better than nothing. There's value in that.
Yea there’s some usable gear in there the only thing that was upsetting was the matches they didn’t work so well I think a separate striker would have made a huge difference. The cube worked really well and burnt for a long time I was happy with most of it
Thinking pencil could be used for net making use in cord.

Okay video. Thanks
Thanks Tom I’m glad it’s satisfactory

Yes I believe it was waxed but you’re right for sure it’s nice to be able to leave a note when needed!
Needs moar aquatabs. In fact, make the whole thing nothing but aquatabs.
The wax matches are strike anywhere.
I think that wax gummed up the striking surface… the lesson… carry a lighter… along with the sardine can.
Didn't you already do this one?
No there’s two more by other brands that look exactly the same one was the zombie survival kit in a tin and the other was literally just called survival kit in a can so this one is totally new
I wonder what the thinking is having a book of matches in addition to the stick matches. Lol
I guess just a redundancy I would prefer a set of matches and a ferro rod if possible eliminate one set of matches and add the ferro rod. It would be fine in a pinch but that’s how I would like to see it!
Sardines!! Late lunch sorted.
Haha yea they forgot the salty fish in the can that’s the only thing that was missing . it was a fun kit to open up
I see they no longer include the bullion cube or tea bag
No both of them are eliminated but the zombie kit I opened that was just like this one still had them in there I made that video a few months ago
👍🇲🇾
Thanks 😊
As a kid I wanted one so bad
Now I know it basically over priced wannabe trash
Definitely cool to see what’s inside I like to see what they put in them! This is still commercially available isn’t there something in your system that makes you wanna buy one on eBay for 20 bucks just for nostalgia?
The kit is nice, but that matches are garbage.
Yea they were not good at all? I would not recommend them matches I would definitely want a separate striker also
@@whitetailsurvival2430 yeah, i think UCO Stormproof Matches is a solid option.
That appears to be a strike anywhere match. Try a rock.
It didn’t say that in the contents list anywhere it just said strike anywhere match maybe I will try one on one of the bricks down in the basement
