The *best* Porsche 911 ever made. Period. The newer ones are faster, sure. More power, more luxury, more technology. But they’re *so* much more complicated, which means there is *far* more to go wrong. You can keep a 993 on the road far more easily than you can any of the newer ones, that’s for sure. There’s a reason their prices have shot through the roof in recent years - in most cases, they’re more expensive than a new one!
When Porsche was PORSCHE! Yes, $99k was a lot of dough in '96(and really shows the $160k+ Turbos of today could be "underpriced"), but no other car of the time had the perfect combos of pedigree, everyday driveability, reliability, and...SPEED!
Sure am glad I got drive a 96' Turbo (in white) back when it was only a few years old since now I wouldn't have a snowballs chance to drive anybody else's with the out of control values. Was always on my list of wants but the longer I waited, the more it became out of reach. FML. Had a chance to buy that white one at the trade-in price of around 35K but couldn't swing it. Retail was only like 50K. Makes me wanna cry when I think about it.
Truly a timeless design with performance numbers and a driving experience that are still respectable 25+ years later in what could arguably be referred to as the golden age of performance cars. I imagine that 50 years from now the image and lines of this Porsche 911 will still be iconic as well as that whale tail rear spoiler and the car will continue turn the heads of car enthusiasts from ages 8 to 80.
For some reason, people are enamoured with the air cooled Porsches because of their analog character and that they're the last of the "pure" Porsches. You can buy one and be assumed to be a connoisseur rather than cheap. That may be true, even though newer Porsches are dynamically and objectively superior. It is what it is, people are willing pay it, so that's what they sell for.
I wish I could have bought one of these ten years ago before they started going up in price. A regular Turbo will run you about $120,000 and up. A 993 Turbo S is the one you want. They're going for well over $400,000 and I've even seen some as high as $795,000. Crazy.
I have a friend who is a successful business owner with a ton of Porsche’s. He had two 930s he got a deal on. Those cars are worth 250k a piece now. He paid 30k for each one. The 930 is an amazing car for 1978. I love the 993 turbos and they will be million dollar cars some day. Old air cooled Porsche’s are just going through the roof no matter what model. The 993 is the pentacle of air cooled Porsche’s and the new cars just suck in comparison. The only recent Porsche I like is the 997. We can always get cheap 996 cars though since everyone hates the headlights for us poor folk.
What? Go shut the door on a older Porsche and compare it to a new one. Huge difference!!! Better yet, go pop the hood on a 100k 911 or Cayenne Turbo and be engulfed in sea of cheap plastic everywhere that will leave your checkbook begging for mercy the moment the warranty runs out. Don't get me started on Porsche's track record for engine reliability over the last 10 years, pretty laughable -- scored cylinders, cracked cylinder liners, IMS bearings, etc...
When Porsche was PORSCHE! Yes, $99k was a lot of dough in '96(and really shows the $160k+ Turbos of today could be "underpriced"), but no other car of the time had the perfect combos of pedigree, everyday driveability, reliability, and...SPEED!
So, in 1999 the Porsche Turbo had: 1.) 4 piston calipers with cross drilled rotors in the front and rear (still something that most sports don't have). 2.) 400h.p., 400 ft/lbs (my Accord Coupe V6 still doesn't have this level of horsepower 21 years later but Infinites finally do). 3.) 6-speed manual (well, at lease my Accord has this). 4.) Price $99,000.00 (even if the price of a Turbo was this much today I still couldn't afford one. Son, I am disappoint). 5.) Still gorgeous by today's standards... and faster too.
i remember Motorweek testing the 3.6 turbo ( was it 1993? ) & the song "Sweetest Perfection" playing by depeche mode can you release that test with the song intact?
u know what's funny?? how a driver(today) is paying for technology. the newer TURBO has 100 more HP and TQ but with a whole bunch of TECH and SAFETY features. and this 1 was putting up similar #s and this 1 is $100k less. amazing
I owned a non turbo 273 HP 993 for a while. It was beautiful to look at and an absolute JOY to drive. It had a 6 speed and you could do 60 mph in 1st. Now for the Down Side.....the security system was AWFUL!! It drove me crazy. There was no ignoring it. But even worse, it was terrible to service and repair. Even the most routine service jobs were HARD. If you're a home mechanic, avoid this car! The turbo will be even worse. If you don't do your own repairs, expect to pay thousands of dollars a year to keep it running.
How was one organization capable of ignoring the most important tire measurement for so long? Profile... but no width. Wheel diameter... but not width. I assume this is why almost everyone was driving around on pizza-cutters practically into the aughts..
probably the best looking 911 ever
And as the top model of the last air cooled 911 generation probably the best 911 ever.
GT2
rubbish my demio is!
The best ever
Best looking car ever imo.
The numbers that the 993 Turbo put out 20 years ago are still very respectable today. That's very impressive.
Compared to modern Porches and other cars in the same class the numbers are actually inferior. Stop with the cliche comments
Unreal acceleration
@@titusrome2863How is it cliche? It’s absolutely true you goofball.

993 Turbo is one of my favorite cars ever.
You are not alone brother, you are not alone..
My 993 turbo is my personal favorite 911. The 911R's and GT3's are a very close 2nd
I watched his all the time on pbs it was amazing I can't believe it's retro now
feeling old myself :(
33 and can't get enough 80s and 90s cars.
i recorded this on a vcr back on the day :D
kids now days dont even know what a vcr is O_O
it doesn't seem that long ago to me
Favorite 911 generation. Looks perfect.
A 4.0 sec 0-60 is really fast by today's standards. By acceleration standards 20 years ago? Ludicrous!
Exactly! Some cars now are getting into the 2's I'm wondering when the limit will be reached?
No kidding, back then a Mustang GT was only slightly under 8 seconds and anything under 10 seconds was considered pretty decent
@@RobertSmith-le8wp it was like 6.5 seconds
@@worldtravel101 minus 4 sec

this is the only turbo I want the 993
When they were still relatively small.
Over 20 years old and still looks great. Total timeless design.
Probably the greatest car ever
Astounding numbers for 1996
Always was a great show, still watch it today. In 1996 a Porsche 911 Turbo still had a cassette deck stereo and an analog odometer, hard to believe.
Need For Speed High Stakes got me into this car. It’s still my dream car to this day.
That melted whale tail was my fav looking 911. First car I saw in person with xenon lights. Looked like Porsche harnessed lightning!
One of the best looking Porsches
Always been my favourite 911.
$99,000 was 'astounding price' in 1996? Those were the days.
incyphe Look how much they are asking for them now! $109-$199k. That's ridiculous. Check out cars.com
Ever heard of inflation? That's about $150k in today's money.

Right?!
Prodriver33 lol never realized. cool!
The new GT3 does 0-60 in 3.9 seconds with a manual transmission. The 993TT did it in 4.0 seconds over 20 years ago. WOW!
One of the greatest sports cars ever produced.
This 993 gen was the best car they made; last of the real air cooled 911s. They are now going for $250K+ in some cases.
The *best* Porsche 911 ever made. Period. The newer ones are faster, sure. More power, more luxury, more technology. "Computer, begin simulation Porsche 993 late 1900's."
one of my dream cars for the last 20 years
I can only see the price skyrocketing and taking it even more away from me 😪
"Gas guzzler tax",that's rich. I could make that back, after a few weeks of street racing.

AmZing car. Best 911 ever.
It's crazy what this generation of 911 is selling for right now, both private sale and auctions.

Jee, this one does hold its value. Decades later, it doubled its money
I never missed an episode of this show in the 90s
One of the best Porsches ever built, and why used, 21yr old Turbos, are priced more than brand new models!
m3trooper cuz its the last of the air cooled

that all is probably true but to me they just got the look, I prefer their style to the later models.

It is easily the best looking 911. Also, power is ridiculous now. Faster? Sure. More fun? It looked like 911’s were plenty fun in 1996.

The build quality of these older Porsches is just remarkable. Its a shame Porsche doesn't build them this good anymore.

Last of the breed!
Too bad prices of these are absolutely insane now. They cost pretty much the same as the new 911 turbos if not even more.

These are almost 300k today. 🤯
That Porsche has a great looking ass.
Remember when 270 HP was a lot. Now a v6 Camry has more. This at least had 400HP.
i remember Motorweek testing the 3.6 turbo ( was it 1993? ) & the song "Sweetest Perfection" playing by depeche mode can you release that test with the song intact?

The DOT COM Era that’s why they Priced them that High .
captain pickard :0
Only 0.3 seconds quicker then the ZR1 but cost double!!!
Price of a nice new pickup truck today….
100k for one now that has 80k miles and use on it. Crazy
now.. a good one ...costs more than when it was new lol
Did John Davies have some sort of mysterious obsession with strawberry-red 911s, or was that just the company..?
It's Cuffenhausen, more something like C in e.g. CENTRAL

Wait was that Patrick Stewart in that brief commercial?
man, that car cost 100,000$ back then...
The acceleration is on par with the C7 Stingray. Think about that.
That's a period infomercial, right!?
Back then for brand new for 100k, now it’s > 200k, and it’s used
They need to upload the SRT-4 Neon retro review because I know it's out there..
How was one organization capable of ignoring the most important tire measurement for so long? Profile... but no width. Wheel diameter... but not width. I assume this is why almost everyone was driving around on pizza-cutters practically into the aughts..
I'll take a yellow for me, please.
