I have a 72 fj40 as well that I drained the gas out of tank yesterday because im installing an EFI. Gas goes everywhere no matter what. I was washing with baking soda and lemon juice last night to help get off smell. 9 down the rest to go.
Let you know 4speed and 3speed have different flanges to the drive shaft to the differential. I was lucky and had both the drive shafts. And they are different length.
this is as real as it gets, home made funnels, kids running around taking parts....love it .... going to watch every video cause i just got a complete. rust free 73. feels like the clutch is slipping...maybe the slave isnt retracting all the way, or i can adjust it. if not the trans has to come out. Better to remove transfer case, trans, motor at the same time?
When work starts, I’m certain you’ll hear the “while you’re in there” comments. It starts with fixing one things and then before you know it, the whole truck is torn apart. I’d check the slave, and then every other clutch mechanism. Keep laser focus and only fix the clutch, then drive again. Try not to get caught up in the fix everything craze. I’m trying to drive mine, and I’d prefer to have some issues and be driving it than have no issues and be working on it.
That was a factory soft top. Cool! When you get ready to take the 3 speed shifter out, it's held in with a collar that you push in and twist. Like the push and twist light bulbs. Usually a pair of needle nose pliers will do it. Love the videos!
Jake Honea it’ll be getting a new factory top soon! $$$$ but worth it. And will I need to do the needle nose thing I’m in taking the engine and trans/transfer case out as a whole unit?
@@projectwrongway9127 No. you can slide the transmission/transfer case back away from the bell housing far enough to either pull it up through the hole in the middle of your Cruiser, or on the ground and wiggle and slide it out. Just watch out for spiders!
Sorry. Just read that again. It's tight taking the unit out as a whole. You almost have to tip the engine to the right to make the transfer case fit between the frame rails. 4 bolts and the trans set comes off. And, yes. You would need to take the shifters out.
OK.. someone else turned me onto this series, and this is the greatest serious I have ever seen. This is exactly what it would be like if my wife and I worked on a Land Cruiser. I'm looking to buy one, so I've had to share with her.. this is AWESOME! :)

Levi Stacey pride? Honestly, I wanted to make those HFS leafs work. And now they’re on, I like the stance and look. Gained about an inch all around as well. Now I have a set of Hell Creek 4” leafs and anti inversion shackles taking up space....
I'll be doing the leafs on mine for the first time soon! mine are sagging. Looking forward to Future videos, and if you ever want to sell your extra leafs let me know!
Yeah, that hole in the tub beneath the gas tank should line up with the drain plug. Drain the tank then remove it. The banter between you and your wife is hilarious. Keep up the good work.

Oh my gosh, with you being in California, I expected a helicopter with SWAT repelling from ropes within 5 minutes of that gas hitting the ground. I hope the California EPA didn't charge you a fine for cleaning that up. :) Love the wife's comments and helpful suggestions. Her whispers into the microphone had me laughing out loud.
Great stuff as always. Wife is a keeper! Pull the engine trans and xfer as one unit. Just unbolt the shifter top cover, Drive shafts, motor mounts, bell housing mounts, misc wires and cables like the starter ground etc, then cherry pick her outa there. WARNING... Be aware... make sure your parking brake drum is sorted on the new drivetrain. Before installing, or if you plan on doing it later, don't fully mount the front engine mounts. The rear crossmember is going to get in the way. It's not designed for the 4 speed, so doing the parking brake will save you headaches later.
I really enjoy these videos - I want to hear your wife's comments regarding the cost of gas. - I laugh with every episode. - You know...there are videos on youtube that may help you with your disassembly...IH8MUD has a FJ40 forum...on second thought...please don't use these resources...I'm enjoying your videos too much.
