I'm Vietnamese and i can understand how hard our language is for mostly everyone in the world. It's actually not too common language, and even the pronunciation of some common words may take you years to practice. Not mentioning the grammar and the vocabulary field, just speaking the 6 different tones right and controlling the flow when you speak might be totally exhausted. But good things are that we have the nearly same alphabet with English and the grammar is quite simple, so learning Vietnamese just take time and require a lot of practice, big respect for people who are trying hard to learn this 🤗

Now the foreigners will understand that ahhh, so the Vietnamese greet everyone like a family, and if we learn all the nouns of family members, we also know how to greet strangers. Easy. Yet with this video's teaching, the foreigners thought that "the words for greeting is ONLY FOR GREETING, it's useless to memorize so much, I don't want to study anymore!" and gave up on Vietnamese, even though it's one of the language with the easiest grammar in the world. Vietnamese is only difficult to pronounce the 6 tones, everything else is much much much easier than other languages (we write how we speak so it's very consistent unlike English or French, we don't have verb tenses nor gendered nouns, our words are composed logically from other words so it's extremely easy to guess the meaning of a new word, etc)
We only have 90 different greetings depending on age, gender, time of day, earths place in its rotation around the sun and depending on which phase the moon is in. Pretty convenient isn't it?? EASY! ^^
it's age, gender, relationship (it's can be changed if you hate your mother or love her), level of politeness or respectness, ranking position (likes in living status or company business ranking or military ranking), the kind of job you're having if you speaking to guess or coworker, time of day or time of the years (old Vietnamese is difference from modern Vietnamese, you can find it appear in historical book or historical literature or historical drama or historical movie or historical comic), Vietnam's place are you in (many word are difference in other region in Vietnam). So it's totally more than 500 ways if you including all.
You two are scaring foreigners learning our language-Vietnamese. 😅😅 Just thinking that’s easy and please don’t be so stressed about it. It’s not that hard, you don’t literally need to learn those so-called 90 or 500 or even thousands ways of saying greetings in Vietnamese, I myself don’t even know all of that. Take it easy.
I'm 100% Vietnamese, but it's really difficult to learn Vietnamese, especially Vietnamese people who speak fast, so they often misspell and stumble, so it's even more difficult for foreigners. Even I myself do not fully understand my mother tongue. Good luck with your studies!
Lol VN is tonal language and we can't talk fast like english and western language , English or western language speak 120-150 word per minute and VN just speak 80-100 word per minute, exactly vietnamese is one of lowest language when we speak lollll, srr my eng bads...

They spoke so fast and without pronouncing consonants that to me it only sounded like vowel utterances one after the other. It’s very hard to relearn or learn something if you aren’t taught from a young age, it could be very frustrating too. But remember not very is going to be pretty or perfect, you well need to practice. It would get better and don’t give up! Good luck to all!
Chinese is much easier than Vietnamese no matter what you're talking about it stays the same while in Vietnamese the word structure changes depending on what are you talking about and there's more than one way of saying you and I in Vietnamese
I never say Xin chao in my life. Xin chao is the way they translate from English into Vietnamese. Vietnamese people say "Chào chú, Chào cô, Con chào chú ạ" in the formal way but we usually ask "Chú đi đâu đó? Where are you going? Cô đi chợ hả? Are you going to market? Con ăn cơm chưa? Have you had a dinner yet?" they are greeting phrases, not really questioning. If you learn more about the culture, you will know why people usually say that. Excuses me is not really the same as "Xin hỏi". In the restaurant, you can say "Em ơi, Chị ơi, Cô ơi, Anh ơi..." Each pronounce with ơi. Excuses me is not "Xin lỗi" at all. Because Xin loi means I'm sorry...bla bla that you did something wrong. So in the formal way of Excuses me (asking for help and the younger ask the older), you should say "Cho con hỏi, Cho cháu hỏi... " the word hỏi here means you need information... Anything else, we don't say Tạm biệt. Vietnamese people say differently and longer depend on the situations. People can understand when you say Tạm biệt but they don't use it at all because it's not the real Vietnamese.

Actually, at 10:00-10:50 the instuctor does discuss alternatives to "Xin Chao" as Chao bạn, Chao anh, Chao chị, etc.--but not the greeting phrases you mentioned. :) According to Google Translate, "Xin hỏi" simply means "ask"--not sure if that is consistent with the example sentences in this video. ...I'm still wondering, though, what IS "excuse me" in V-nese; there are lots of use for it, other than getting a waiter/waitress' attention.
Learned all of the numbers in about 5 minutes. Really easy and straightforward! Could easily count into the thousands now with no problems. Learning even the most basic conversational phrases, however... that's a different story.
Haha, so hard? Vietnamese grammar is not difficult, only three tenses, present-future-past. I can beispielweise for you. "tôi đang đi ra lào cai"=> present tense. "tôi mới đến lào cai hôm qua"=> past tense. "ngày mai tôi mới ra lào cai"=> the salary will come. "mình đang đi ra lào cai" or "mình đang ở lào cai", or "mình vừa đến lào cai" are almost the same thing. Just swap the place of time and adjective will make a different sentence but it has the same meaning 😂. You should pay attention to the auxiliary verbs of time like "mới", "vừa mới", "hồi nãy", "rồi",they are all auxiliary verbs of time and are in the past tense. and usually in Vietnamese lectures in the center will rarely teach this problem, but Vietnamese people often say that, I think it will help you.

Also a note, some accents in Vietnam pronounce the "r" as a "gi" sound depending on the word. Its basically a shorter "s" "Cam on rat nhieu" "Cam on giat nhieu"

My brother studied languages at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center in California. The pace of study was intense. Students had to master the language course in 36-64 weeks. Psychologically it was very difficult, but fortunately he was helped by Yuriy Ivantsiv's book "Polyglot Notes. Practical tips for learning foreign languages”. I grew up with Vietnamese friends in high school and I was able to pick up words much easier before. I forget most of everything I learned...when you don’t use it you lose it. Now that I’m trying to learn again it seems so hard! Maybe reading the words throw me off. I think I’ll just try to listen instead lol. To easiler learning vietnamese, you should know and learn about subject that teach you or show you about vietnamese culture, in order you can understand that we have so much pronous that is uncountable. So learn about vietnamese culture first then it would be easier to learn.
You'll probably be hanging around with people of your own age so after after the "Chào Em/Anh/Chị" Em (younger brother or sister)/Anh (older brother)/Chị older sister), "Em/Anh/Chị ăn cơm chưa?" is a warm, and very common, greeting... It means "have you eaten yet?" It's pronounced (roughly, cos different pronunciation) Em/ Ang (Hanoi) An (Saigon)/ Chee un curm chooa? Just ask Google "how do I say have you eaten yet in Vietnamese" to hear the pronunciation. The words are pronounced short, not long.

Never ever say tôi. 90% of the time it is unnatural. Vietnamese pronouns are mostly based on age and you would state your status according to. (If you are younger than the other person by about 10 years, you'd say, "Em xin lỗi!"
@@brandonliao408 what you said is true. Based on your age and age of person is speaking with you, you can say "em, anh, chị, cô, dì" etc. "Tôi" is used in formal situation. Saying "tôi" is good to Vietnamese if you are foreigner.

Can confirm, their gossip is usually about their kids, problematic and or sketchy people in their families, or anything else you and your coworkers would talk about vietnamese just sounds angry and gossipy by nature lmao

well, If you are intending to visit/live in Southern Vietnam, especially Ho Chi Minh City, you should better find tutorials in Southern Vietnamese accent. This video is good, but it demonstrates Northern Vietnamese accent.

:000 I think you might miss the polite word “ạ”. You would be considered as impolite, perfunctory if you say without this word whenever/whatever you talk to higher rank people or people who seem older than you. On the contrary, using “Hi” or “Hello” and eliminating “ạ” with your friends/younger people are the most natural way. So for me, in my interpretation, I use this form to greet. You + chào + your partner + (ạ) maybe “em chào cô ạ” “con chào bố mẹ” (idk but i’ve never used ạ in this case, it sounds so awkwardly) “em chào anh ạ” “chị chào em” “hi/ hế nhô”

I have been working with a company of 200 people for 8 months. In another department is a very nice older Vietnamese man. English is very hard for him to speak,but he's the best worker in his department and knows a lot. My family always taught me to be kind and hospitable to foreigners, and to be able to say at least a few basic things in their languages. I absolutely shocked this man a couple months ago when I learn to say good morning and how are you. He apparently never heard a Westerner speak Vietnamese, and I tend to focus on accent when I learn things. It made him very tickled and happy. He had also just lost his older brother. But yes, English and Vietnamese are extremely different. Vietnamese is the hardest for me yet. But it is fun!
Just started learning Vietnamese for my Vietnam reenacting PAVN impression and that I’m interested in the language. Don’t think the pronounciation should be too difficult but I think the way they speak might be an obstacle. It’s very much different from Spanish, German, and Tagalog/Filipino when it comes to speaking

Is it possible to break down the phrase any analyze it for the begineers. For example, what does xin and cao mean. In Chinese, the equivalent is Nihao, which literally means " you good".
cao or chào carry the meaning of the whole phrase, which litterally means greeting, hi/hello. You can always just use chào in informal situations. Xin is more of a auxiliary verb, meaning "let/allow me to,..., please". It add formality to the phrases

Not mentioning the grammar and the vocabulary field, just speaking the 6 different tones right and controlling the flow when you speak might be totally exhausted. But good things are that we have the nearly same alphabet with English and the grammar is quite simple, so learning Vietnamese just take time and require a lot of practice, big respect for people who are trying hard to learn this 🤗
There are six tones?
This video is a dumb way to learn Vietnamese. It doesn't explain the literal translation of each single word, so foreigners can't see the logic behind the language, and thus can only rely on memorization. For example, when explaining Vietnamese greet each person differently based on their age and gender, why not translate the words: chào anh = hi big brother, chào chị = hi big sister, chào em = hi younger brother/younger sister, chào cô/dì = hi aunty, chào chú/bác = hi uncle, chào bà = hi grandma, chào ông = hi grandpa. Now the foreigners will understand that ahhh, so the Vietnamese greet everyone like a family, and if we learn all the nouns of family members, we also know how to greet strangers. Easy. Yet with this video's teaching, the foreigners thought that "the words for greeting is ONLY FOR GREETING, it's useless to memorize so much, I don't want to study anymore!" and gave up on Vietnamese, even though it's one of the language with the easiest grammar in the world. Vietnamese is only difficult to pronounce the 6 tones, everything else is much much much easier than other languages (we write how we speak so it's very consistent unlike English or French, we don't have verb tenses nor gendered nouns, our words are composed logically from other words so it's extremely easy to guess the meaning of a new word, etc)

I never say Xin chao in my life. Xin chao is the way they translate from English into Vietnamese. Vietnamese people say "Chào chú, Chào cô, Con chào chú ạ" in the formal way but we usually ask "Chú đi đâu đó? Where are you going? Cô đi chợ hả? Are you going to market? Con ăn cơm chưa? Have you had a dinner yet?" they are greeting phrases, not really questioning. If you learn more about the culture, you will know why people usually say that. Excuses me is not really the same as "Xin hỏi". In the restaurant, you can say "Em ơi, Chị ơi, Cô ơi, Anh ơi..." Each pronounce with ơi. Excuses me is not "Xin lỗi" at all. Because Xin loi means I'm sorry...bla bla that you did something wrong. So in the formal way of Excuses me (asking for help and the younger ask the older), you should say "Cho con hỏi, Cho cháu hỏi... " the word hỏi here means you need information... Anything else, we don't say Tạm biệt. Vietnamese people say differently and longer depend on the situations. People can understand when you say Tạm biệt but they don't use it at all because it's not the real Vietnamese.

Learning even the most basic conversational phrases, however... that's a different story.
Haha, so hard? Vietnamese grammar is not difficult, only three tenses, present-future-past. I can beispielweise for you. "tôi đang đi ra lào cai"=> present tense. "tôi mới đến lào cai hôm qua"=> past tense. "ngày mai tôi mới ra lào cai"=> the salary will come. "mình đang đi ra lào cai" or "mình đang ở lào cai", or "mình vừa đến lào cai" are almost the same thing. Just swap the place of time and adjective will make a different sentence but it has the same meaning 😂. You should pay attention to the auxiliary verbs of time like "mới", "vừa mới", "hồi nãy", "rồi",they are all auxiliary verbs of time and are in the past tense. and usually in Vietnamese lectures in the center will rarely teach this problem, but Vietnamese people often say that, I think it will help you.

To easiler learning vietnamese, you should know and learn about subject that teach you or show you about vietnamese culture, in order you can understand that we have so much pronous that is uncountable. So learn about vietnamese culture first then it would be easier to learn.
You'll probably be hanging around with people of your own age so after after the "Chào Em/Anh/Chị" Em (younger brother or sister)/Anh (older brother)/Chị older sister), "Em/Anh/Chị ăn cơm chưa?" is a warm, and very common, greeting... It means "have you eaten yet?" It's pronounced (roughly, cos different pronunciation) Em/ Ang (Hanoi) An (Saigon)/ Chee un curm chooa?
Just ask Google "how do I say have you eaten yet in Vietnamese" to hear the pronunciation. The words are pronounced short, not
long.

I'm Australian and when I say Toi xin loi (i'm sorry) it sounds really, really Aussie (as in my accent on the 'oi' part of the word).
Never ever say tôi. 90% of the time it is unnatural. Vietnamese pronouns are mostly based on age and you would state your status according to. (If you are younger than the other person by about 10 years, you'd say, "Em xin lỗi!"
@@brandonliao408 what you said is true. Based on your age and age of person is speaking with you, you can say "em, anh, chị, cô, dì" etc. "Tôi" is used in formal situation. Saying "tôi" is good to Vietnamese if you are foreigner.

This video is a dumb way to learn Vietnamese. It doesn't explain the literal translation of each single word, so foreigners can't see the logic behind the language, and thus can only rely on memorization. For example, when explaining Vietnamese greet each person differently based on their age and gender, why not translate the words: chào anh = hi big brother, chào chị = hi big sister, chào em = hi younger brother/younger sister, chào cô/dì = hi aunty, chào chú/bác = hi uncle, chào bà = hi grandma, chào ông = hi grandpa. Now the foreigners will understand that ahhh, so the Vietnamese greet everyone like a family, and if we learn all the nouns of family members, we also know how to greet strangers. Easy. Yet with this video's teaching, the foreigners thought that "the words for greeting is ONLY FOR GREETING, it's useless to memorize so much, I don't want to study anymore!" and gave up on Vietnamese, even though it's one of the language with the easiest grammar in the world. Vietnamese is only difficult to pronounce the 6 tones, everything else is much much much easier than other languages (we write how we speak so it's very consistent unlike English or French, we don't have verb tenses nor gendered nouns, our words are composed logically from other words so it's extremely easy to guess the meaning of a new word, etc)

The good news is there are only 4 verb tenses and no conjugations.

:000 I think you might miss the polite word “ạ”. You would be considered as impolite, perfunctory if you say without this word whenever/whatever you talk to higher rank people or people who seem older than you. On the contrary, using “Hi” or “Hello” and eliminating “ạ” with your friends/younger people are the most natural way.
So for me, in my interpretation, I use this form to greet.
You + chào + your partner + (ạ)
maybe “em chào cô ạ”
“con chào bố mẹ” (idk but i’ve never used ạ in this case, it sounds so awkwardly)

I have been working with a company of 200 people for 8 months. In another department is a very nice older Vietnamese man.
English is very hard for him to speak,but he's the best worker in his department and knows a lot.
My family always taught me to be kind and hospitable to foreigners, and to be able to say at least a few basic things in their languages.
I absolutely shocked this man a couple months ago when I learn to say good morning and how are you. He apparently never heard a Westerner speak Vietnamese, and I tend to focus on accent when I learn things.
It made him very tickled and happy. He had also just lost his older brother.
But yes, English and Vietnamese are extremely different. Vietnamese is the hardest for me yet. But it is fun!
Just started learning Vietnamese for my Vietnam reenacting PAVN impression and that I’m interested in the language. Don’t think the pronounciation should be too difficult but I think the way they speak might be an obstacle. It’s very much different from Spanish, German, and Tagalog/Filipino when it comes to speaking

Is it possible to break down the phrase any analyze it for the begineers. For example, what does xin and cao mean. In Chinese, the equivalent is Nihao, which literally means " you good".
cao or chào carry the meaning of the whole phrase, which litterally means greeting, hi/hello. You can always just use chào in informal situations. Xin is more of a auxiliary verb, meaning "let/allow me to,..., please". It add formality to the phrases
