      I’m also Vietnamese as well and I was born in the US but my parents and other family members were from Vietnam and my moms been here for like over 21 years and the first and last time that I’ve been to Vietnam was when I was just 7 years old.

    I’m in Vietnam now travelling to the north. The best phrase I have used is “em oi” and “tinh tien” 😆
    May I suggest to you to put chapters/time markers for the different phrases?
    Because I keep coming back to this video to revise my pronunciations😂

    Thank you for showing "no msg!" I have a bad allergy to it and it makes me very sick. I have seen some videos and they put big spoonfuls of it in the pho. That would probably put me in the hospital! I only wonder if they put it in when they make the broth or only when they are making the individual dishes? Thanks again! Love your videos! ❤

      em oi can be used for both male and female

      Yes, em ơi can use for both male and female, but if that person is older than you, you can say chị ơi for female and anh ơi for male

    I remember making the pronunciation mistake. I wanted rice and chicken, but said cá and not gà and ended up with rice and fish. I also hated saying em oi. As an American as you said it seemed rude to me. I always said Xin lỗi as if I was speaking English. Vietnamese also gave me strange looks at times with my use of Cảm ơn after everything if someone served or did something for me. Habit from the US I never changed, but had one person comment to a Vietnamese friend I was with about how I was polite. So I guess it worked out in the end.

      Haha I know Em ơi literally means hey you and it's quite rude to say that in the US, I guess we just need to get used to culture differences :))

      If you have a phone that is relatively new, you can just get an E Sim card, plenty of places to buy online and very easy to install. In fact, you can purchase it before you even get to Vietnam.

      Probably your best bet is to find places that specialize in vegetarian (chay) dishes.

    I found that Google Lens work great for menu with no photos. It also has a built in interpreter, at least my Samsung does. Although it does have a little trouble with Vietnamese lol

    Speaking of which, I heard the word for soy sauce is different between northern Vietnam and southern Vietnam.

      Yes, the north we say xì dầu, southern people say nước tương

Would you say "Anh ơi" or something like that if the waiter is a man, or "Bà ơi" if it's a woman older than you?
