Jah9 | Interview | Album Review | "Note to Self" (2020)

Over the past decade, Jah9 has established herself as an innovative and distinct voice in Reggae music, creating her sound of jazz-influenced and dub-based Reggae that she calls jazz-on-dub. She released her third vocal studio album, "Note to Self," on March 13, 2020.
As I listened to the album the day of the release, my first thought was, "This is very good!" Then I thought, "We can't just review this album. We need to speak with this brilliant artiste about the album." But the reality is Jah9 is busy and is a top artiste. So I was hesitant to ask. Then I emailed and waited. And emailed and waited. Then there was a 'yes'!
We got the opportunity to discuss the album with her on October 8 over Zoom, covering the sound and words of this well-crafted album. Jah9 is currently in Tanzania (East Africa), where she's been over the past 8 months or so. I'm really grateful she took the time to speak with us and was extremely patient as we fought through Zoom difficulties in the beginning of the call. I can't say enough how grateful I am that she persisted with the call.
I hope you will enjoy this interview and that it will get you to appreciate Jah9 and her music a little bit more. Jah9 is an exceptional artiste. Her intentionality, purposefulness and thoughtfulness have really placed her at the forefront of the evolving sound of reggae music.

I felt this wasn't her best work but I respect the chances she took to provide a different sound and there are some really good songs on here that stand up to her best work. The beauty of this alb to me is that 9 is communicating with the listener and herself at the same time from a self reflective perspective. Great album 9/10
