  • Good posture on the violin is something so personal that it's only possible to generalise about it, but of course, it's incredibly important to hold and play the violin in such a way that is both natural and comfortable. How can we be truly natural playing the violin? Well, our technique needs to be based on the natural movements of the body. Let's explore it together. Mary V.

Hello Mario! Thank you very much!
It's not difficult to guess that you have been experiencing pain or stiffness of some sort with your violin.
It's wonderful to think of you becoming free and more comfortable because playing the violin can and should be pain free and enjoyable, so keep going Mario....
      And well done indeed! Mary❤

these are great tips which I will certainly try to avoid pain. thanks. The only pain that's unavoidable occurs in my ears when I draw the bow across the strings. but that doesn't stop me.

I've been playing for many years, and I change my posture almost every single day...! Took me quite a long time to find a proper shoulder rest too. So grateful for this video, I'm feeling more informed now!!

Hola Mary!

Hello Lola! Thank you very much, I'm glad you liked the video... like a lot of people, when I was younger I didn't think very much about posture, but now I do! I got into the habit of holding my breath during recordings (sometimes I still do☺) but when I took deep breaths I noticed how good it makes you feel and how it affects the arms and position of the violin...so I try to be mindful.
Like you I usually practice standing up, or more accurately, I stroll around the room and into other rooms as well...I memorise everything very quickly which really helps to be free of the music stand...
and in recording sessions it's pretty easy to be comfortable in any chair, as you saw in the video.
I've always had stiff hands that take ages to really warm up, so I always start with putting my hands in very hot water, then play very slow scales and a study like Kayser 1, or Kreutzer 2, but I don't use my 4th finger until my hand is feeling more supple.
This is because the stretches and positions needed to play with such a short 4th finger requires more flexibility to play without strain, so that's one of my main goals when warming up; when my 4th finger feels great, then my hand is completely warmed up.
We can all usually play even when we have stiff shoulders and all kinds of aches and pains, can't we? I have my share of those things, but very luckily, nothing has stopped me from playing...and I want to continue for a long time!
I'd love everyone to be comfortable when they play, but we all have different starting points.
Lola, I'd love to know how you get on with posture and comfort in your different situations. Mary❤

@@violinstudiowithmaryv Hola Mary!

Hi Mary, is it detrimental practicing sitting rather than standing?

@@violinstudiowithmaryv I am glad. Sometimes when I am learning a new song I sit on my couch and just go over it. I am not concerned with posture at that learning stage but maybe I should be.

@@TNungesser It's probably a good idea to support your back and spine with a couple of firmer cushion on the couch...posture issues can creep in without us noticing. Look after yourself. Mary❤
