  • There is no violin study more universal than Kreutzer 2. This wonderful study can be the basis for practicing just about every violin technique, if we know how to adapt it. Mary

Thank you for the demonstration! I’m just learning this and haven’t tried the alternative bowings yet. I have a short pinky too and struggle sometimes with it being in tune.

      Well thank you very much!
Most people learn the study thoroughly first before trying variations.
It seems very simple, but it's really challenging for those with short pinkies, isn't it? We've got to use techniques that favour the fourth finger...I've done a number of videos about this which may be useful; (from my playlist 'The Art Of The Left Hand')

Hola Mary!

Hello Lola! Thank you very much. I didn't realise you also had a short fourth finger. You may be interested in taking a look in the video at how I extend my hand when playing my 4th finger - do you notice how I use the side of my 1st finger as a 'hinge' to help the 4th? Doing this keep my 1st finger in place rather than my hand being pulled forward by stretching for the 4th finger. So either the tip or the side of my 1st finger is being used as a placeholder for more stability in intonation.
It's not the easiest technique at first, but it soon becomes very natural and of course, frees the hand a lot...Mary❤

@@violinstudiowithmaryv Hola Mary!

Hello Alice! Sounds like you need to sort out a couple of fundamental issues before you will feel more relaxed.
I can only guess at some of the causes; it may be that you are squeezing tight between the jaw and left shoulder which tightens the left arm and makes playing exhausting very quickly.
Or you may be squeezing between your left thumb and first finger which in turn tightens the whole left hand.
Or your left hand maybe isn't set up well for your size and build.
Or your bow hold may be stopping you from bowing easily.
So you can see more information is needed - and it would be most helpful if you sent a short film of yourself playing to maryveronicaviolin@gmail.com
I can usually tell from looking just what the issues are. Take care, Mary❤

Hello Alice! I'm so sorry I took such a long time to answer your email - it went straight to spam and I had no idea it was there. However, I've emailed you my impressions and advice and I don't think there's anything too difficult to sort out. You're a very nice player and you've got into some habits that are all affecting your sound. Perhaps your violin also needs to be looked at too. Keep up your faith in yourself and work at one thing at a time and you will soon get where you want to be! Mary❤
