The Violin Must Move With A Shoulder Rest!

  • Many violinists make the mistake of clamping down with the head when using a shoulder rest without realising that this is very detrimental and leads to soreness and pain in the neck, shoulder and left arm. Treating the head as a rigid unmoving clamp that secures the violin in one place is to misunderstand the relationship between the head and the left hand. The shoulder rest should help to free all the left side muscles instead of restrict them. Let's look at solutions together...Mary

Thanks Mary , I’m always unsure of how much the left hand should hold the violin . I’ll try this tomorrow.

Hello Katie! It's great for the whole left side to do the large sliding exercise because it balances everything naturally. I hope you enjoy it!
      Thanks katie. Mary❤

Thank you for touching on this topic, Mary. I'm a "clamper" so I'm hoping this will help me.

Hello Iam! I hope so too...
Even a small movement of the head is a great achievement and leads to more and more movement and freedom. I know it's not the easiest thing to release the head and shoulder from clamping, but if you do this effective exercise every day with relaxation, patience and focus, your head will get the message. I know you can do it!
      Take care. Mary❤

Hola Mary! Seguiremos experimentando Mary!😊 Un abrazo enorme!🤗💜🎶💜🎻

      Hello Lola!
Thank you very much for those lovely words!
I've not seen what support our beloved Augustin uses; I'm going to search for that one...
He has many amazing aspects to his entire technique...when I watched his video where he described how to 'rest' his left hand while playing Paganini's 'Moto Perpertuo,' I was in complete awe...
We are very lucky to have such an incredible person as Augustin sharing his techniques with us and showing his wonderful philosophy and talents. Thank you for such inspiration Lola and a big hug to you! Mary❤

Firstly, thank you very much for your lessons. Little by little I am getting little improvements, which make me very happy.
    Just one simple question, please!?:
I watch a lot of videos about violins here on TH-cam. It looks like my violin is the only one getting all dusted with rosin immediately after a few notes.
Is it that I apply too much rosin?
Is my rosin very low quality that I have to apply more than needed?
If the rosin is a good quality, do you need to apply less? Should the rosin be warmed before applying?
    Oops, I said one question!!😅
Thanks a lot Mary V. It is lovely to watch your lessons and learn something new every time, which I try to remember and practice. ❤

Hello Chris! I'm delighted you are getting little improvements which make you happy - so nice of you to say so....
If you're applying rosin every time you play then yes, it's far too much. Wait until you actually experience 'bald' spots in your bow before applying some rosin sparingly just on the bald spot as bowing spreads the rosin throughout.
I recently discovered something about rosin; I went for a bow rehair and had been using more and more rosin to no effect because as I was told, the bow hair was knackered and old and had lost its life. The new hair gave me a much better bowing experience and I've been using my normal amount of rosin again, which is the minimum possible.
I do think that better quality rosin means we can use less. It does make a difference to your sound if there's too much rosin.
Rosin doesn't need to be warmed before use.
We get used to how much rosin we use, don't we, so it's a good idea to wipe most of the rosin off your bow with a microfibre cloth and experiment with starting from very little and increase the amount very gradually...Thank you very much for your lovely comments. Mary❤

Do you remember Mischa Elman video and his head? Do you believe he was clamping the violin? It seems unconfortable 😂. At the end of that video my head hurt! I clamp my violin in certain passages, when I slide towards the first notes of each string for example. But I can lift my head in the rest and move it freely. Alright?

    • @violinstudiowithmaryv
      @violinstudiowithmaryv  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Hello Marta! Yes, alright. I think the important thing about both you and Elman is the RELEASE of the head, because it's obvious that permanent clamping will lead to a lot of trouble and pain.
Great Marta and thank you! Mary❤

Hello Denise! I use the Wolf 'Forte Secondo' which is the best shaped, most adjustable and comfortable shoulder rest I've encountered.

    I don't use a shoulder rest

    • @violinstudiowithmaryv
      @violinstudiowithmaryv  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Hello Julie! As you probably know, these sliding movements are actually based on some of the techniques for no shoulder rest..but with or without a shoulder rest the violin should move and the head and hands be as free as possible...
So many violinists are unfortunately full of tension, soreness and pain because of rigidity and lack of knowledge about how to get free.
I hope you are enjoying your playing. Mary❤
