  • It can be tricky moving on from beginners' sound caused by the bow hand or wrist not moving. Moving the wrist even a little bit can seem quite impossible and so the sound remains undeveloped. There are various methods to experiment with to get the wrist movement going. Try this very easy way to move the wrist which incidentally also puts the bow arm in a great position and creates a dynamic hand shape ready for all sorts of bowing. Mary

    Interesting to observe Augustin Hadelich bowing style - appears stiff with virtually zero movement from his wrist while all power coming from his forearm / shoulder. Watching closely though, his wrist movement is very subtle and does guide the bow stroke.
    Thanks for another very helpful & beautiful video - Mary V has the Key! 😁

      Hello! What a very good observation!
      Augustin does look rather unusual, almost as if everything is moving together without subtler actions, but of course as you said, the wrist movement is there and in his case, performing magic!
      We all benefit from understanding techniques, and when it comes to customising those techniques to our personal shapes, anything can happen.😊
      I'm delighted you liked the video; thank you!

    Gmorn lady, I just have two precisions and I want to tell: in my case at least I have not my bow so clean all the time and I suggest to use a little stick or and old bow in order to remain mains propres, an unconditional key for a violinist, and otherwise to name up/ down not in/out because this words remain as order and it make a little confusion (I think we use a hundred of orders simultaneously for our little brain if the passage is not so hard...!), and I can see your idea is very lucide and plenty of effectiveness...tkanks lady, you are so lovely...

      Thank you Vicente!
      You are right that we are processing maybe hundreds of impulses simultaneously when we play, but that's the amazing thing about us human beings, that by repeating the action many times, the mind and body reorganise themselves and the action eventually becomes natural to us!
      Thanks again. Mary❤

    Hola Mary! Seguimos experimentando, Mary! Mil gracias!🤗🤗🤗💜🎶💜🎻

      Hello Lola! It's an amazing process to absorb all these small and large details and bit by bit, make everything natural. I agree that a mirror is like another teacher for us; so often by observing ourselves from the outside point of view it becomes so obvious how to alter something or realise something valuable. We are very lucky to be violinists!
      Thank you and I hope that Spring is coming to beautiful Madrid! Take care. Mary❤

    Thank you Mary. You may have covered this but if you haven't maybe you could relate this to making beautiful sounds on the violin using this technique?

    • @violinstudiowithmaryv
      @violinstudiowithmaryv  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hello! Thank you for your Interesting question.
      This technique offers us great sensitivity as it lets us to feel the bow making strokes with the lightest of touches and without 'interference' from our arm weight.
      When we can discover the different properties of the bow itself, eg. its different weights at different points, its balance points, its sweet spots and how it bounces, we learn not to over - control it, but instead we work together with the bow...
      The result is a beautiful sound. Mary❤

    Dear Mary
    Thank you for great tips, may I ask how to stop the scrap the bow & the strings , especially fast & intense music I play , I noticed my bow has the scrapping marks on the wood , white strips, I take off the varnish of the wood why it is so strenuous to bow partically on G and D strings and 3 and 4, 5 position like tug of war , the bow and violin , I try everything to relax , using the wrist etc..and the sound is dry, I am short & my arm and fingers are small short , will it be the reason ? Many thanks if you can figure out ❤

    • @violinstudiowithmaryv
      @violinstudiowithmaryv  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Dear Alice, remember previously we had mentioned how your upbows were constantly scraping the stick against the string?
      Well this is the same issue.
      The problem is that you are changing the shape of your hand and fingers too much and applying the wrong kind of pressure throughout the stroke.
      You are trying to fix your sound by relaxing and using your wrist, but changing the shape of the hand, fingers and wrist too much is making things worse, you see?
      Basically when your bow scrapes and the sound is not pleasant, then the bow hold and bow speed need to be altered so the bow can make a clear sound all the way through the stroke.
      This is nothing to do with size and small fingers...
      It has everything to do with slowing down, listening and analysing.
      You need to forget 4th and 5th position for a while and go back to very basic observation of your sound and your bow hold when playing simple open strings.
      All violinists go to the basics to check that their fundamental mechanisms are correct. You cannot fix things in 4th and 5th position and playing fast while using only relaxation and your wrist because a more fundamental issue is not being corrected, you see?
      For some reason you have sadly missed out on some crucial fundamentals, so you must teach yourself to listen and observe properly to what is actually happening while doing extremely basic things.
      You are using too much weight in the stroke instead of allowing the weight of the bow itself to make the sound by removing our muscular interference. This gives you the touch you need to work with the bow rather than 'control' it, leading to a dry, scrapey sound.
      Here are some videos about exploring the bow and nurturing your sound which I hope you will find helpful;
      th-cam.com/video/nQT9cfWAiQg/w-d-xo.html
      th-cam.com/video/6PQwi29ggaA/w-d-xo.html
      th-cam.com/video/pu7iAYnjW2E/w-d-xo.html
      By going to basics you'll discover movements in your bow hold that need to be removed or simplified so you can play slow whole bows with minimum changes to your bow hold so the bow is free to make a clear sound. That is the goal. Only when you can do that should you go on to anything faster.
      But it's the same with playing fast; too many alterations in the fingers, hand and wrist and the wrong weight makes playing fast extremely difficult...observation is needed to fix it.
      You have missed this crucial step in your hurry to progress, but your sound and your problems will remain as they are without taking care of these fundamentals.
      I know you can dedicate yourself to fixing this and add the joy of a lovely, reliable sound to your already impressive playing, Alice. Take care.
      Mary 💗

      @@violinstudiowithmaryv Thank you so much Mary
      I read your message & teaching again and again very carefully , it starts syncing in my mind what is happening my bowing & the shape of my hands , realize the contour and movement of the bow , I start playing it without hit the stick now , I guess I want to learn everything at once without taking g it slow & section at the time. The violin is such difficult instrument to learn, most of friend say learn it as a hobby , don't take it seriously , it will make you go nuts , I don't want to give up and you have boosted my desire and confident to learn well and I keep watching videos thank you

      Dear Alice, I'm delighted that you have been able and willing to examine things so you could learn to play without scraping!
      There are other things that are crucial to your progress in violin...
      The first is to make sure your attitude is set for success; talking about how difficult the violin is to your friends and listening to their opinions is going to affect your mindset and set obstacles up inside you, you see?
      So protect your ambitions and personal desires from unhelpful influences. This helps you to have great inner strength and confidence.
      Next it's essential that your own inner dialogue about the violin is healthy, so saying it's difficult and having anxiety about outcomes makes everything much harder, progress is slower and not much fun.
      Next, learn how to slow down and practice properly. Awareness should be your constant companion.
      Lastly, the biggest key to success on the violin is to ENJOY getting down to practicing with awareness and then playing without worrying where it will lead...
      Achieving a 'final goal' on the violin is not possible, so we must change our mindset and learn to cherish every moment of our journey, which takes us much, much further. Take care. Mary💗

      Thanks Stephen. For the purposes of the beginning of this exercise the thumb and forefinger need to be opposing, but then as more fingers are used, the thumb can move to any natural position that's comfortable. Mine's best between my first and second fingers, what about you? Thank you. Mary❤
