    Keeping it simple is the way to go with bowing - too much extravagant movement or not moving enough both cause untold problems and the all important sound is lost. Let's explore it together... Mary

    Thanks MaryV, I watched your bowing lesson just when I was aware that my bowing was scratchy and not controlled.

      For sure, your spiritual and soul makes me feel we speak the same language.

      Hello Moshir!
      I have been very honoured to hear from many amazing older people who have decided at this later stage of life to start the violin. Many say they didn't get a chance when younger and are grateful to be able to do this thing full of love and a great gift to the world.
      So, yes, at 59 you can do it if you have a love of music, and have plenty of determination and patience!
      Lots of people learn violin from TH-cam tutorials...but do you have a violin and bow?
      Mary💗

    I followed your advice and my tone has improved over the last weeks. I wish you could record a video about vibrating without a shoulder rest :) Your videos have been very helpful!

    • @violinstudiowithmaryv
      @violinstudiowithmaryv  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hello! I'm delighted about your improved tone - fantastic!
      Vibrato without a shoulder rest can be quite tricky because of the temptation to hold the violin more tightly, which can in turn tighten up the left hand. But we can learn techniques that really help, so I'll try to make a video about this as soon as I can.
      Thanks again and very well done! Mary❤

      Hello Katie!
      Exciting and wonderful as your vibrato videos are (BRAVO!) it's a shame if the sound and bowing are behind, as vibrato relies on great bowing to sound gorgeous as you know, so I hope you enjoy working as hard on your bowing as you obviously have with your left hand.
      Keep going, Katie! Mary💗

    Hi Mary, Thanks for this video and I hope all is well with you. When you get a moment can you discuss the pesky bouncing bow that intermittently creeps into playing. I have a new bow that I like very much but I believe sometimes its a bit bouncier than my other bow. This is an old bow and I tighten it a bit more than my other bow (slightly more then the recommended pencil width between bow wood and hair). It feels more comfortable at this wider width, but I would appreciate your views on that as well. Cheers John

    • @violinstudiowithmaryv
      @violinstudiowithmaryv  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Hello John! Yes, i agree the bouncing bow is really pesky!
      There are two reasons for it; one is that the bow is made rigid by being too tight and becomes an untameable bucking horse.
      The other is muscle tension in the bow arm, usually just above the elbow during the crucial hand-off or transfer between the upper arm and the forearm in the stroke, resulting in bounces in the middle of the stroke. Most people will start to notice this when they examine it.
      Normally the bow is adjusted for different types of playing and even during a piece it is tightened and loosened. So I would forget the pencil- width idea and base your bow hair tension on your own judgement based on what you're playing; your own judgement becomes far more accurate, if difficult to describe to others, it's so personal...it becomes very obvious that whatever works is best!
      So long as the stick isn't making a scraping sound on the hair, or the bow isn't bucking like a bronco, or your elbow isn't locking or reluctant to move freely in the middle of the stroke.
      Tame the talents of your bouncier bow!
      I could make a video on this topic, so thank you very much for the idea John.
      Take care. Mary❤

      Hi Mary, Thanks for the response. I'll start concentrating on the arm issues. One thing I forgot to mention is that I notice the bouncing on the A and E strings, not the G and D. Have a great day. John
