On my mother's side, my great great grandparents immigrated from Scotland in the mid 1800's. My great grandmother and aunt would tell us stories of how "they were just wee lasses when they sailed to the US with their parents. Evidently, a good number of people fell ill on the ship. They lived to be in their late 80's. Great strong & Christian women for sure.
Yet another fascinating video. what a beautiful story of the gentleman whose ancestor migrated to Utah from the Mapperton area! Luke did a great job in the interview. Julie and Luke you both continue to ROCK!!! Hope the beautiful pool will get an amazing renovation! Julie any update on your Italian house and future adventures? I think you should take Luke (Steven and claire too of course) to Italy and do a few episodes on Italy next year. Sending you all good wishes from Minnesota!
Julie the bridge crossing was so funny. That we’ll walk side by side is code for if we fall I’m using you to break the fall 😆. Just thinking why is it they (husband) say “you go first” down the trapy trail or in my case the Haunted House lol. Hope your pool is restoration goes well too. 🇺🇸
I am a teacher in Auckland NZ (originally from Selby Yorkshire) in the middle of our first serious lockdown. When I'm not doing online teaching I amuse myself by watching your wonderful videos. They are so much fun. I love them so much. They are keeping me connected to the outside world. Thank you
Luke I love the way you wind up Julie and Julie takes in her strides, love the way you both interact with each other, can’t wait for the next instalment of banter, really funny.God Bless you all at Mapperton.
This is the land of which Shakespeare wrote... This royal throne of kings, this sceptred isle, This earth of majesty, this seat of Mars, This other Eden, demi-paradise, This fortress built by Nature for herself Against infection and the hand of war, This happy breed of men, this little world, This precious stone set in the silver sea, Which serves it in the office of a wall Or as a moat defensive to a house, Against the envy of less happier lands, This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England.
Do you know when the pool was installed? My guess would be it was used for raising fish, not swimming. With the extensive documentation it may be listed in one of the ledgers.
Great episode!! Strange but the views from atop that great mound were really emotionally moving. What a beautiful place and view!! I cant not imagine what it must be like to walk those beautiful grounds. 🦋
I love this episode. Julie and Luke are unique and charming. The view from the iron age hilltop was incredible, so beautiful. Luke's history lessons are fascinating. Enjoyed Luke's interview with an American decended from a family who worked at Mapperton. Julie is so full of energy and ideas. Perfect partner to keep Mapperton moving forward into a successful future.
This video is much appreciated. These hill forts and the surrounding countryside (not unmindful of the fact that the author is writing about a different part of England) bring to mind some lines from A. E. Housman's "A Shrophire Lad"
I hope that indeed you get the pumps back working & get the swimming pool repaired before summer comes around, so Julie can go swimming in it! That would be great! Thank you for the video, I loved it! I love to see old things being reused & repurposed!
Wow! What a fantastic place to get to stand on, an Iron Age Fort!! Lucky!! The view is breathtaking ❣️ I think it would be great to have Time Team go to Mapperton and check out the Iron Age Fort, if they were allowed by the gov’t!
Julie! I am from Australia and your comment about I’m Celebrity Get Me Out of Here just put a smile on my face 😃You would be the best international PommyAmerican in aristocracy thing contestant! I hope someone from OZ tv (producer?) is watching your vlogs and think of you bringing a lot of character and humour! 💕💕💕💕B
That historic site on your land and the view from the top is super! I want to visit someday, but I’m not going over the rickety bridges and through the nettles lol.
Lol, Julie telling Luke to quit talking...........pot calling the kettle black. I'm teasing but.......maruauders sp?, yep, we know that word in the US. Where is Julie from?? lol Love your knowledge of the place Luke, good work.
Pleased to be of the family of your Hinchingbrooke Payne neighbors from the 17th-c. A branch from which descends the Payne’s of Virginia ca. 1654 and the Jamestown Burgess and former Salter, Florentine Payne, a business partner of Col. Richard Lee of that famous Virginia family. They were joined in 1664 by one of their East Anglian cousins related to the Cromwells, also my 9th gg, Thomas Payne (d. 1673) of St. Mary’s, Maryland, and his wife from a Norfolk/Surrey family with the unusual surname of Smallpiece. Also have a distant cousin that is your neighbor at Mapperton. His family (Robert’s) have a farm in Dorset! It is a very Small world! Your channel is very special for me and now with Time Team back too- I am a very happy man! Thank you
Thank you so much for all the work put in to making this video and sharing this part of Mapperton's history. Really happy there is a long term plan for the pool! I hope all goes well in your preparations.
I laugh so much watching you and Luke your such a fantastic down to earth couple. I wish a network would give your family its own reality show. I look forward to every sunday cause it means a new video from you.

Hello! I have enjoyed all the episodes that I've seen and they are very enjoyable indeed. I am a rerired British history college professor and I take in a lot of you tubes about British castles etc. It seems to me that in addition to weddings, there are many othrr thongs you could do to make cash. How about renting part of your land for an annual rugby game. I know that Blenheim Palace allows rugby games on one of their lawns. Or maybe there is a church choir or a school choit who would like to give a concert there. Maybe you could split the profits. Come to think of it, I wonder any musical would want to give their concert there. I have seen these two things done at such places and they seem like they would be a great success. I keep thinking of you all. You and your family serm like such nice people, especially your husband and your inlaws! Best, Ginny

As usual, a wonderful video. I found the interview with Mr. Mabey very moving. The walk across the bridge was funny, and the pre-Roman hill fort very interesting indeed. A lot of fun watching the pool-but I hope that it doesn't end of costing quite as much as 50,000 GBP to address the problems. At least you are making a start at finding out what's involved. LIke so many of your viewers, I have become a loyal follower and watch these videos every week. Please keep them coming! Perhaps, if necessary, you can organize a "Go Fund Me" for the pool. "Hanging by a hinge" Luke always manages to "keep calm and carry on" as Julie shrieks and we all roll on the floor with laughter! 🤗👐💖
Julie! You're a lovely, warm, and, I'm sure, kind person. Please stop trying to shut Luke up! Just smile and nod. We like him!

That'd is how my family came. One side came from Ireland and my great Grandmother came from England.
