The etymology of finial is mid 15th century french meaning putting an end to or binding. A variant of final. Good luck with your finial repair. Love truffles. White truffle oil adds so much delicious flavor to food. Heavenly stuff.
Some more common truffle nicknames are fragrant diamond, black pearl, shadowy lady, or even underground empress. For many people, especially someone growing up in America, black gold is used as a nickname for oil.
On our land here in Quebec - Canada, the beavers are woking hard too, helping us to keep the level of our lake high and the wetlands in good shape. We are also, however, watching them so they don't put down trees elsewhere on the estate, so biodiversity is preserved. Bravo and keep up with this tremendous work!
Have you put sheet metal around your trees to protect those you wish to save? Also if you have any culverts that you don't want plugged you can make a plug proof fitting out of heavy gauge wire. If you need a drawing leave a message here.
I love the way Americans are so upbeat ! LIfe here in the US has lost a lot of its jollity lately so it is wonderful to see such happiness and lightheartedness!
Totally amazing!! First you may just have truffles on your property and secondly the beavers are just wonderful and interesting animals. I hope and pray your eagle is repairable and is back soon in it's rightful place.
Finial is a great word of the week. I don't have them on my house but I do have them at the tops of my lamps! Most of the year they are round glass amber finials, but I do get "festive" for the holidays with soldiers, trees, and a gingerbread house. So fun to change them and an inexpensive way to surprise people.
I just love love love how much fun you have together!! Definitely were made for each other!! I love the word of the week!! Please share in a video how you guys meet!! ❤️🦋❤️ From Kentucky 🐎
The dog is cute and I do hope he finds some truffles. But the beavers are so much more interesting. I hope you’ll report on their progress on a regular basis!
This black gold is much different than the Beverly Hillbillies! I’ve always wanted to hunt for truffles. We have some land in the Rocky Mountains and we have the most unusual mushrooms growing on our land. I always wonder if there were truffles there.
Ok, I’ve change my mind; I no longer envy you living on such a large historical estate. The stress would be my undoing! The truffle hunt was so interesting! I’ve been reading the comments, and I love all the suggestions people are making.
Yoy were asking what content we found interesting and I couldn't answer with a single topic. I think part of the alure of your chanel, is the bredth of interest...all the aspects of Mapperton! Thanks for the beaver talk today.
How lucky to have truffles on the property! I see truffle hunting weekends at Mapperton culminating with a fine meal utilizing truffles! Or maybe a limited Mapperton truffle item for purchase. Or a special limited Mapperton themed holiday gift basket.
Hi there Like and Julie another lovely visit to Mapperton always new ventures loving the beaver residence what Sharp teeth they have 😍The truffle dog enjoying his truffle hunt and the cheese treat truffle delicacy on Mapperton👌Julie I do hope your yoga classes retreats are back to normal I just love the meals shared to do a yoga retreat would be a treat a dream always a pleasure your vlogs a highlight😍👌Have a fabulous week my loves devoted from New Zealand 💖💖😘😘👌👌🌟🌟
Black gold!!! Truffles!!! Yum yum!!! I hope you will find many!!! 🥰 Save Mapperton. 🎉 The eagle is made out of lead? Queen Elizabeth’s coffin was lined with lead. I didn’t know this until later, but wondered why the military young men seemed like they were bulking under the weight. So, that eagle must be an anchor.
How about sharing an ancestor of the week? I have an ancient Montagu in my pedigree; it would be interesting to know of the other families who have married into yours.
I am so amazed by the genius of these beavers! I'm a human and I have no sense of direction in life but these critters have it all figured out XD Animals are so knowledgeable and wise!
Huzzah for the beaver's progress! I'm so happy you have tried this adventure. I think it has value for education and showing that wildlife are not just disruptive pests. Looking forward to more of the beaver cam!
Stopping video, Black Gold can only mean Truffles, starting video. "Finial" also known as a tree topper at Christmas Time. I love the Beavers they look so content and happy right at home. Thank you for preserving them and bringing them back. Love from N.Y.
I love Jack and the Word of the Week. It is amazing how well the beavers have settled in and how much they have accomplished in only a month. Thanks for sharing their progress with us. 😊
I've never been able to look at beavers in quite the same way since that notorious exchange between Leslie Nielsen and Lisa-Marie Presley in one of the "Naked Gun" films...
Word o' Wk: finial- yes! Next, fenestration. And, when visiting Paris, my fave= vermiculate rustication, which is the answer to "What is that worm pattern on the walls??"
I would love to see close up details on the finials at Mapperton. Especially at the peaks of the chapel and manor house maybe with a little history lesson 😊 please?
I'm afraid I'm not keen on truffles but the dog (rather than a pig!) was amazing at finding even a tiny piece. The beaver content was extremely interesting; I think more areas should be 're-wilded', as you've done at Mapperton.
Now what you need are fox and raptors to eat the mice. There were beaver around a popular swimming pond where my sister lives, and they gnawed on SO MANY trees. I think they were removed because that could have created a falling-tree hazard to the public.
You could make a casting of the lead eagles, and cast new ones in aluminum. They would be much lighter, easier to replace, and easier to duplicate if you wish to sell Mapperton eagles. Actually, that would be really cool! They wouldn’t need to be displayed on ancient pillars. They could be artwork on display inside.
Great to see beaver progress. Sad they don't choose the trees you want felled LOL. Very interesting video. Loved it. Do wish you well with secret truffle cache into cash!!! Go Jack💜💜💜💜
Don’t know if it counts as a word of the week - but can there be some explanation as to why Featherstonaugh is pronounced Fen-Shaw (and other similar names that defy common pronunciation)?
If you dont laugh you'll cry! Although, I didnt even notice julie had a smile until luke said something. But going back it didnt look like she was "laughing like she thought it was funny" more like relieving the tension im sure was built up....Just my 2 cents 🤗 Hope you guys get a break in the chaos!
We had a giant cottonwood tree behind our house, on the bank of the lake. The high school was at the end of our street and teachers would take their classes for walks in our neighborhood, and point out the different trees. The cottonwood was the highlight of the walk. Some beavers moved into the lake and ripped the bark off of the tree, all the around it and as high as they could reach.
Oh no! I'd have definitely found something to put up to block the beavers on the trees that are too nice to lose. Beavers can be both destructive and helpful. But I'm sure there's ways to manage it. I'd have been bitching about the damn things though. But without meaning any real harm to the beavers.
I love learning new words, I already knew that one 😁. My dad loved expanding his and our vocabularies. He would make a vocabulary and spelling test once a week while we were growing up.
Ah the beavers fell trees to dam streams and build lodges for comfort and protection and store up tree bits for food for winter. Your accommodation just didn't suit them. After inspecting they said "all teeth to the ready, we need to build this before the deep winter sets in and its too cold to work." We want to be comfy and safe in our new home. Generally they choose smaller trees, but with a limited workforce and no time to spare, they've gone after larger stock. Bless them but I think by protecting the ones they've chosen, they will seek out others to fell as they need to get the job done. I do hope they are microchipped in case they manage to wander. I love that you've taken this project on.
FYI, you don't need to hand wash your new sweater, (jumpers). All you need to do is steam and brush them with a sweater brush. It helps them to last longer and no pilling of the fibers.
Did you find any truffles? I was lucky enough to watch some dogs on a "truffle hunt" in France and was amazed. Of course, I do like truffles which helped with the excitement. Keeping my fingers crossed that the beavers are successful! Cheers-
Love this video! Loved the nature walks with Luke, Loved the sweater reveal with Julie! This video is a great balance of the two of you! I learned some things, and had a great time watching. Well Done! 😃
please do consider supporting this important part of England’s heritage by becoming a patron at www.patreon.com/mappertonlive.
I get a kick out of how Luke’s mannerisms and his walk are like his father ❤
Yes seeing the family is adorable
I like how the ranger really cares about the beavers well-being.
I live that Luke has boots with knife holders in them. Channeling his ancestors I see.
As a crocheter I love that they support wool from England. They have some the best wool yarns.
It is amazing how much the beavers have done in such a short time!

Thank you ranger for helping care for the beavers. Also nature herself.
Beautiful sweaters. I call fall (Autumn🍁🍁🇺🇸)
Black gold!!! Truffles!!! Yum yum!!! I hope you will find many!!! 🥰 Save Mapperton. 🎉
Total joy to watch the two of you !!! I love the care you give to not only the home but the property . 💖
Totally amazing!! First you may just have truffles on your property and secondly the beavers are just wonderful and interesting animals. I hope and pray your eagle is repairable and is back soon in it's rightful place.
I am SO loving your beavers! Lovely animals!
Well done Julie for navigating the Yoga Retreats. Love the beavers. Just love it.
Julie I always love your spontaneous enthusiasm!
Nature...the ultimate soothing balm
Amazing creatures. Such little engineers. So nice to see them happy at work.
I have had Beaver fever.

Love your 'word of the week'!
I rarely comment on videos, but I really enjoy your videos :).
Glad you like them!
The beavers are so wonderful to see. Hope they love their new home. Julie and Luke love the sweaters. You looked great in them. Lovely video. 💕

How fun to watch the beavers and their construction skills! Brillant!
Yes I like the word of the week.💯👍📖
Just love seeing the beavers at work - had a favourite story book about beavers when I was young. Thank you for sharing from Australia.
Ok, I’ve change my mind; I no longer envy you living on such a large historical estate. The stress would be my undoing! The truffle hunt was so interesting! I’ve been reading the comments, and I love all the suggestions people are making.
Great job getting everyone to the Yoga retreat. Love the beavers 🦫 They have done so much already. The ranger really cares. Thanks for sharing 😍😘

LOVED word of the week, who knew ? finial, finished ?? good word educating us

Great video as usual! Julie your haircut is adorable and it goes really well with your hat!
Beavers are a Canadian national symbol. They even made it onto our five cent coin.
How about sharing an ancestor of the week? I have an ancient Montagu in my pedigree; it would be interesting to know of the other families who have married into yours.

Luke watching the dog work is like seeing a kid open presents on Christmas. 😊
The beaver's are so adorable! I hope they're happy in their new home.
Huzzah for the beaver's progress! I'm so happy you have tried this adventure. I think it has value for education and showing that wildlife are not just disruptive pests. Looking forward to more of the beaver cam!
You can have a finial if your lampshade has a harp supporting it

Word of the week is an excellent idea.
I've never been able to look at beavers in quite the same way since that notorious exchange between Leslie Nielsen and Lisa-Marie Presley in one of the "Naked Gun" films...
Ooooohhhh that food !!! Looks amazing
Word o' Wk: finial- yes! Next, fenestration. And, when visiting Paris, my fave= vermiculate rustication, which is the answer to "What is that worm pattern on the walls??"
Love you guys! You have so much fun together preserving and restoring history. ❤
I would love to see close up details on the finials at Mapperton. Especially at the peaks of the chapel and manor house maybe with a little history lesson 😊 please?
Yes, please be sure to show us some examples of the historic house word of the week. I know a really tough one: quoins! Do you have any at Mapperton?
Oh, that meal looks delish!!! 😊❤
We’re trying to reintroduce beavers into the national forest my area too! 😊
Supporters are called “ Beaver Believers”.
Hi...I loved seeing the update on the beavers...what a great project.
The golden glow of your autumn woods is glorious!
Hahaha the suspenseful music while Jack was looking for the truffle made me laugh!😊 Good luck!!
Can’t wait for the beaver babies.
Im supporting my home called Stillington. Best of luck with your estate i hope you find truffles
I'm afraid I'm not keen on truffles but the dog (rather than a pig!) was amazing at finding even a tiny piece. The beaver content was extremely interesting; I think more areas should be 're-wilded', as you've done at Mapperton.
My husband asked me what I want for Christmas and I’ll be making my wishlist. I just love the clothes!
@1:25 bro chillout lol way to kill the vibe
It looks like they might be a truffle hard to find! ☺🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤪😏I see also that they are beavering away too 😜
Nice to see you both :))) Already laughing thank you
Love 'word of the week' 👍🏻 Words from 15th Century would be fitting...

In the US, the ornamental top that holds a lamp shade onto the lamp is called a finial.
Very interesting segment on truffles. The beaver seems to be settling in well at Mapperton.
Oh!! This is SO wonderful!!! I LOVE watching your videos! I knew exactly what "black gold" was, and couldn't WAIT to see your hunt for it!! :)
Great to see beaver progress. Sad they don't choose the trees you want felled LOL. Very interesting video. Loved it. Do wish you well with secret truffle cache into cash!!! Go Jack💜💜💜💜

Finial always reminds me of the Bewitched episode where Endora gives Darren a finial from a lamp to use as a magic charm!
Lol, I remember that episode!
I loved watching the Beavers. I hope you find more black truffles for your enjoyment. I love truffle chips. They are divine.
If you dont laugh you'll cry! Although, I didnt even notice julie had a smile until luke said something. "The pond washed away!" Good thing you just got some beavers, let them fix it.

Jack the dog is welcome to my property in Dordogne, France. I can’t find the truffles every year.

Great to see the beaver update. Yes, please, to word of the week.
I love beavers. I hope the water they swim in are cleaner though.
So interesting! The beavers look like they love their new home!
Thanks for sharing
Finials are on the top of laps
Oh! I love word of the week! Thank you for increasing my vocabulary ❤️
You are so welcome! Every week = new historic house word of the week!
Love this video! Loved the nature walks with Luke, Loved the sweater reveal with Julie! This video is a great balance of the two of you! I learned some things, and had a great time watching. Well Done! 😃
I love word of the week!! Great episode!!
word of the week is a good thing.
Awww The beavers are so dang cute!
For me finials have always meant the tops of lamps. Good word.
I love the "WOW" segment!
Beautiful sweaters (jumpers)
Good update
