How to paint a SMALL SEASCAPE

  • In the video I show you how to paint a seascape feature the coast of Wellington in New Zealand. This is just a small painting, but I love painting small art works and you can use them as colour studies to refer to if you are going to paint a large art work. I nearly always paint a small painting before doing a big one and sometimes a small painting is as far as it'll go but often i'll develop the idea and do a large painting.
    In this video I discuss the idea behind the composition, I go over the colours and brushes I am using, I explain the principles behind the tonality of the painting and I explain how to mix some of the colours I am using. Also there are lots of tips for painting seascapes in general.
    If you would like to paint along with this, check out the link below for the written notes that accompany this video. Feel free to copy the painting and copy / use the reference photos that are in the written tutorial.

    Crazy beautiful, Sam. Thoroughly enjoyed this one. What an excellent composition and explanation of the plan for the painting. I love the way you did you shadow across the water and the light. It is perfect, moody, and really drawing in the viewer 😊

    I really like how you articulate your thought processes as you go. It's very helpful to know the "whys" of what you do. That way it actually helps us make our own decisions about our own painting process instead of just copying yours. Thank you! I paint in acrylics and am just learning watercolor, but a lot of your principles apply to all painting, which is really helpful. I didn't know I could paint till I was 50 years old, and having painted now for just about 12 years, I'm having a blast, still, learning new things. I hope you make many more videos!

    I love your videos and I am going to take you up on the question asking... at one point you say "it should just look like a murky grey on my palette, but will have the appearance of a golden yellow when next to the existing shadow mix." How does one know this sort of thing? It is the one area in which I struggle most in painting. I need a golden yellow so I mix a golden yellow ant it is wrong. Just using your example it could be any color really. Thanks for all you do for folks.

    Nice video and channel. You got a subscription from me. I am curious of how you prepare your paints. Do you add drying shortener or do you thin your paints? Are there drying times or is it painted all in one step? Thanks for sharing.

    • @SamuelEarpArtist
      @SamuelEarpArtist  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Anna, I thin my oil paint with Liquin Original and this also speeds up the drying time, this is the only medium I use in general. My studio paintings are done over several sittings but my plein air work I do in one go. 🙂

    Nice painting! Do you mix a lot of paint for seascapes when you plan to do a series of them? Like, plan out four or five from similar light or references, then mix a couple jars of cloud and sky colors to just knock out the batch of paintings?
