Thank you for being such a great teacher of colour, composition, brush and sketching techniques! I really appreciate your work.;From Vancouver Island, in Canada.
Hello Samuel, Thank you for all the tips, especially your advice of doing thumbnails and a colour study before painting anything. I know doing this beforehand will help me tremendously. Looking forward to seeing your final painting. (So I hope you’ll share it with us! 🙂
Thank you for focusing on this crucial step, compositions and color studies have always been tricky for me in the past. I am sure the final painting will be amazing!
Yup, you need to do the final one. Would be nice to here what you take out of your colour study and change in your final products, your reasoning behind the changes and so on. Love your work and your advice.
I really appreciate this tutorial. It's clear and concise, and without complicated dialogue using technical artsy language that I don't understand. This is very helpful! Thank you so much! I look forward to the painting! The color study is beautiful.
Spring? OMG, we are just heading into winter! I have to learn to sketch, you make it look so easy, and I really love the way you use the dagger brush! Very nice tutorial! Thank you.
Hello from the States, I've been enjoying your videos and great tips for getting your values right. I like you warm and pleasant style of presentation. You mentioned odd sized canvases. I think the long canvases could also be very dramatic if they are in portrait instead of landscape orientation. Then paint diptychs or triptychs with them for a larger work.
Another wonderful painting and tutorial, thank you Sam! I think it would be great for you to create a tutorial based upon the painting in the background.
Awesome! I have to confess I have never stretched my own canvas. Normally I have taken my paintings to a framers and they have mounted them for me. I have also in the past glued some paintings to boards but this is tricky!
This is an amazing tutorial video and really helps me a lot. I followed you on IG and you have a bunch of good stuffs out there. Thanks a lot Samuel 🤘🤘🤘
Hi Sam, you are one awesome artist and a wonderful person as well - or should that be the other way around..? Either way, you are THE best and I for one, am most grateful. As an awesome artist and a gifted teacher, you've nailed it.
Excellent instruction! Thank you. I am studying composition in general both for landscape and seascape. Your comment on creating the “O” by using cloud direction, and other elements helped me understand one way to hold the viewers eye. Looking forward to deeper explanation on seascape composition. Yes would like to see your completed painting. Found out about you from Tischler’s recommendation..
Thanks Candace, glad you liked the video. Composition is something I am always trying to work on. Whilst I’ll be explaining more about composition in future videos I can definitely recommend the book ‘Composition of Outdoor Painting’, by Edgar Payne. He was a brilliant plein air painter. 😊
Hi Sam love watching your videos your a v good teacher and good at explaining techniques. Im very interested in your pencil sketching especially clouds as im struggling with these. If you have time please could you do a tutorial on this... ? Thank you
Samuel, I enjoy watching your training videos. My question is what software do you use to edit and design your painting. I am a senior citizen, and I am working with Acrylicsuniversary learning what I can in Painting. Jed Dorsey, the leading artist is teaching all of us to use sketching the same as you are.
Great job, thank you for sharing this wonderful video. It would be beneficial to beginners like me if you could show your method to arrive at the right color value in different spots of the painting, why it is not lighter or darker and so on, I find green color to be the hardest to get it at the right value. Thanks a lot.
Thanks M Sultan. This year I will be releasing in-depth painting videos which will be available to purchase from my website. I’ll be explaining all the points you have raised as well as how to mix all the colours and painting the art work in real time...stay tuned 😊
Of course we wanted to see the final painting . For some of us this is the only way of learning . Please go on .👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 can we replace peryleen crimson , with quinacrodone magenta ? Which was part of your limited pallet . Also what brand had dagger brush . Thanks
Hi Mehdi, yes you can replace perylene crimson and use either alizarin crimson or quinacridone magenta. I like perylene crimson as its tonally darker than the others but not as saturated and so there is less of a potential for it to be overpowering. But you can use any of the three colours I have mentioned for the red in your palette. I use Rosemary and Co brushes and the sell a range of synthetic and hogs hair dagger brushes.
Hi Sam, I loved the video and your method of teaching. I am a beginner painter and would like to ask you some questions. I want to know about the brushes and how do you clean them. Thanks
Thanks Rajani, glad you liked the video. With regards to cleaning brushes I clean them using either turpentine or kerosene making sure that I get the paint out of the ferrule as best I can. Afterwards I then wash / rinse my brushes with brush soap or washing up liquid. 🙂
Hey Paul, I’ve accidentally lost the video footage, I think I lost it when I moved last year. I’ll be making more of these types of videos though, stay tuned 😊
Thanks. Chroma refers to the purity or intensity of a colour, it's also known as saturation. Value refers to how light or dark a colour is, for example cadmium yellow is a high chroma colour but light in value.
Another awesome painting Sam. A question, you seem to use pretty much same palette for most of your paintings so is it a case of the reference photo fitting in with your palette rather than your palette fitting in with the ref photo. Not sure if i have explained that well but it seems really straightforward for you to what colours you use where i overcomplicate things and try and always change colours to match a ref photo. The end result from your painting here is very close to the reference photo in terms of colour.
Hello Beach Life, thats a very good question. I use the palette I am using because I believe you can paint any landscape or seascape with these colours. I have also found that the more I have simplified my palette the more my art work has improved. I feel that before I was using too many colours and that my paintings weren't as harmonious and then I realised that half the colours I was using I could make anyway. I'm going to try some painting some art works with even less colours and see how I get on. All the colours I have on my paint palette at the moment I pretty much managed to make (or something very close) out of three primary colours and white. I've been trying lots of different things with colours lately but I have found that simplifying my palette has made colour mixing not only easier but has improved my painting at the same time.
@@SamuelEarpArtist Thank you for taking the time to reply Sam your advice is always invaluable. Message to my self, keep the palette simple and try to use the same colours throughout for a more harmonious painting. :)
Brilliant Sam, many thanks for your info greatly appreciated , do you mind if I add a little. Comment it's just that I felt the buildings felt out of place somehow and I was drawn to them rather than the whole picture which was otherwise a good composition.
Thanks Keith, fair comment about the buildings, the reason I added them is because it’s such a well known view in Wellington. I sell in a gallery in Wellington and people like local scenes. 😊
Thank you for letting others use you reference materials to have a go at painting the scene. That is really a nice gesture.
Thanks, all part of the service 😀
Samuel jaime bien tes peintures et tes présentations, tu démontres de l’assurance et une métrise du médium, merci pour partager.

Hi Stacy, I’m glad you like my videos. That’s not a bad idea with the diptych’s or triptych’s, I’ll keep that in mind. Thanks for subscribing 😊

I would like to see the final painting video. Also you could do a video on how you stretch an already painted canvas.
Awesome! I have to confess I have never stretched my own canvas. Normally I have taken my paintings to a framers and they have mounted them for me. I have also in the past glued some paintings to boards but this is tricky!

That's wonderful, looking forward to your course video 👋
Delightful piece of work, and very clearly explained procedure, thanks. Just one question; could this be done in one sitting as if plein aire?
Thanks Niccolo. Yes you could painting this in one sitting like a plein air painting for sure 😊
Thanks great video. R these done in acrylic or oil paints?
Thanks Roy. I painted this in oils 😀

Always surprised just how blue those initial cloud and mountain shadows are. Something to do with the Burnt Sienna as the available contrast I guess?
I use the burnt sienna to desaturate the blue 😊
yes please Do a video of the final painting!
Will do 🙂
yes to the larger painting please!

Very good video. Is value the same thing as chroma?
Thanks. Chroma refers to the purity or intensity of a colour, it's also known as saturation. Value refers to how light or dark a colour is, for example cadmium yellow is a high chroma colour but light in value.
