  • In this video, I show you how to paint an epic seascape featuring breaking waves, translucent water and a rocky foreshore. These are all great elements to include in a dramatic seascape painting.
    I painted this artwork in oils but you can also use acrylics as the principles of colour and tone are exactly the same.
    In the video I will explain the following:
    1. Composition
    2. Colours and brushes
    3. Blocking in the painting
    4. Tips on painting breaking waves, translucent water and rocks
    5. Adding final details
    If you would like to paint along with this, check out the link below for the written notes that accompany this video. Feel free to copy the painting and copy / use the reference photos that are in the written tutorial.

      Hi there! Really love your work and really want to learn to paint seascapes! I just sent you an email but thought I'd try here as well. I'm very anxious to get started! lol I have some experience in acrylics but want to move into oils and really want to learn seascapes and you seem to have a good portfolio of seascape experience! For only $5 a month on Patreon I can get access to all of your seascape tutorials? - not just a random one every month? Also, do your patreon videos give step by step instructions without editing a bunch out? Thank you very much. I really appreciate your time! I'm very poor which is why I ask you these things! LOL Blessings, Tina.

    Samuel, I am a beginning artist coming from a family of artist and I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your instruction. I have been struggling with color mixing and the way you explain how you are creating your colors has gotten me over my block. This was just a pleasure to watch - you make it look so easy!! What kind of medium do you like to use? Also, when you are adding the hazy part of the waves for the spray, is that a thinned down mixture like a glaze, or are you dry brushing a small amount of paint on to achieve that. Thanks!

    • @SamuelEarpArtist
      @SamuelEarpArtist  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Myrna, I use Liquin Original, mainly for convenience as I like the fast drying time. I dry brushed the sea spray on the painting so mediums used for the part 😊

    Thanks Sam! very informative and easy to understand and follow. May I ask a question about black color mixing? in this video, you used ultramarine blue, burnt sienna and perylene crimson to form black color. In you revious videos, you mostly used ultramarine blue, burnt amber and quinacridone magenta to get black color. how do you decide which combination to use to get shadow or black colors? Absolutely enjoy your videos.

    • @SamuelEarpArtist
      @SamuelEarpArtist  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, great question. In the past I used to use ultramarine blue and burnt umber to make black as the colours are dark in value but I haven't been using burnt umber so much as it can be a bit muddy sometimes. Lately I have just been mixing burnt sienna and ultramarine blue together to make black as burnt sienna is a dark orange and orange is opposite to blue on the colour wheel. The two colours cancel each other out to make a near black. Mixing in a crimson or a magenta adds a little violet to the mix but these colours are optional. I try and keep my colour mixes as simple as I can 😀

    I really love this video I’ve watched multiple times trying to learn the process of the waves and rocks,wish me luck I’m painting a picture now with the foam. Could you tell me where you buy your daggers brushes,the half and quarter inch brushes with long handles I’ve looked everywhere I know to look. I like how they are smaller on the tip instead of long and stringy. Thank you Kathy

      Thanks Bill, I always paint my horizon lines free hand in my seascape, but my hand isn’t that steady for some reason.
