Never use dirt to build up an area to lay gravel/limestone on top. You need a denser packable material to provide a stable base. More depth of stone on the fabric after the aforementioned prep would have done wonders for your driveway. You would not have had these issues if prepped correctly.

      What base should we use

I don't think the fabric was the main problem...either the dirt was not dried and compacted properly before putting stone down, or the drive does not properly shed rain water.

Apparently everyone on TH-cam making driveway tutorial videos don’t know how to make driveways.

best thing to do is dig out the area deep enough usually 3 or 4 inches deeper then the width of a tire. yes for your area you show it will take a few tires you also have to cut the side walls out on each side of the tire. place the fabric down, pour a small layer of gravel on top of the fabric, then place the used tires down and nail them together. then dump the gravel over the tires and cover them with at least 3 or 4 inches of gravel. the tires will keep the gravel in place and is strong enough for you to be able to drive a loaded dump truck on top of the area with no problem... the tires keep the gravel in place and wont let the gravel spread out. you might want to pack the first layer of gravel down on top of the fabric.. just something to think about might really help ya... it will last for years and years...

Fabric is only good if you live in dry area or are planning on concrete driveway. Wet, clay area will always need maintenance and the fabric makes it harder to maintain.

I cut land first, compacting lightly. Then added base gravel starting with some fines and then 1-3” angular basalt. Used compacting roller on top. THEN I laid down the geo tech fabric and I’m PINNING/ staking it deep down. Yeah it’s some work but I hope worth it. I’m almost done with staking it down and doing quite a few spots because I don’t want any curling up and catching on any box blade or bucket but if I finish it correctly with my Truegrid and Vodaland commercial grade permeable pavers, I shouldn’t need to dig it back up and disturb the fabric. But I AM concerned about dirt accumulating over time due to leaves sticks etc that’s too much to always be on top of and it doesn’t pick up well on gravel. So we will see how it all turns out but I hear ya on the annoying fabric poking up - my husband had put some down on our old driveway put didn’t pin anything down and it was also un even and dodnt have clean large angular rock either so rain water would puddle and it sucked. But now I chose clean gravel that is strong with a lot of space to hold water below the fabric and also will have clean gravel above the fabric and inside the commercial strength permeable paver grids. The hardest part for me has been where the driveway meets the asphalt road which was put in thin and uneven by the City since it is just a small dead end street.

Did you lightly compact first then lay the fabric and pull it semi tight and then pin it down so there was minimal wrinkles? That’s what I’m doing but hubby thinks I’m crazy going over kill. I think it will really help. Also 1-3” angular basalt below the fabric locks realiy nicely. It’s hard to work with a grade but I’m super happy with the results and noticed now we don’t have any water or dirt puddles and I that was even before I put the fabric down! Our soil does have quite a bit of clay, and loomy soil on top but i cut some of that off before putting any rock or fabric then waited for dry day to put the rock

When I built my driveway, as shown in an older video on my channel, I brought in some dirt and compacted it with a 6K lb tractor. I laid the fabric down and put gravel on top. I did not properly prepare and compact the base before putting down the fabric. That being said, I will never use driveway fabric again. I don’t care if the base is properly compacted or not. Driveway fabric is a bad idea.

I wonder if the problem is not that fabric as much as it is the base material choice. Instead of using dirt I think a road base material, (something that contains more rock, sand, clay,) would pack down harder and allow for drainage / erode less.

Having a better base would probably help. I built this area up with dirt from my property. It was free except for fuel and the time to do it.

I'm pretty sure this was a base problem. That was a lot of fluffy looking dirt you put down.
If it does not compact well well you will always have issues.
How well did you compact it? Did you compact in 6-8" layers? If not, that's your problem.
And you should also have a good base of larger stone first then top coat with smaller sruff.
Seems to me you skimped in more than one area and so you wasted your time.
Fabric works well on a properly prepared substrate.

It didnt work for you because you don’t know how to properly use it. The fabric goes under your sub base (which should be surge rock not dirt) then your gravel top. Its not supposed to be under your topper. And you should be using a permeable membrane that allows water to drain through. The fabric is for soft ground areas to prevent your sub base from shifting and settling

Problem is with drainage and not with fabric. Even if more gravels are placed, the same thing will happen. (Example: th-cam.com/video/rsJTkw1n_VE/w-d-xo.html )

The fabric should be about 6 inches to a foot below the top of your finished driveway. There’s no way you should be seeing the fabric. Dig that out, compact it, put the fabric down and don’t try to skimp on how much material goes in over it.

did you remove all the organic material before fabricing down? If you have squishie dirt pumping through, that stuff doesn't compact. It's got to be removed all the way down to the sublayer
