  • I've always had a love/hate relationship with Sailor and up until recently I had written the brand off completely. Then for some random reason, when I saw this pen come across on the Pen Addict Slack, the money had been PayPal'd to the seller before I realized what I had done. The seller happened to be a good friend of mine, and after writing now for 3 weeks with this pen, I'm happy to say, that friendship is intact. That, and I love Sailor again. Thank you to Andrew for an amazing deal on this pen and giving me faith in a brand that had me shying away for the last year. Also, I just realized after publishing the video, it's "Quadrupod", not "Quardopod". Click that link below for some quality pen pillows.

The thing about Sailor pens is, that they are made to build kanjis and not to write cursive. So that is why the two major brands in Japan produce nibs with a little bit more feedback. This is also why Japanese nibs are "finer" than those from the west, it is challenging to build a kanji with a broad or double broad nib.
I possess a Sailor Pro Gear, a Pilot Custom 845, and a Pilot Custom Urushi. And for my taste, Pilot is better than Sailor, and although the Sailor nibs are VERY pretty, I do prefer the other brand.

I purchased one brand new at a pen expo. it was 300 even, but I got free ink with it... so there's my rationalization xD

May I suggest that neither are better, just different and the preference is totally subjective. Pilot nibs tend to have some bounce to them and if that's your jam then purchase a Pilot. Sailor nibs, like Pilot nibs, like Platinum nibs, offer a different writing experience from each other. So I suggest that to prevent a case of buyer's remorse that you try them all if possible before you purchase. Join a fountain pen meetup, go to pen shows, etc. where you will be able to physically try them. I did exactly that and what I learned was that I love the nibs from all three top tier Japanese pen manufacturers. I love the extra fine needle point nib from Platinum, I love the soft fine bouncy nibs from Pilot, and I love the medium nib (not the hard medium) from Sailor. Just my opinion of course and your mileage may vary.
