  • Hopefully the audio is slightly better on this one? Also thanks for all the kind comments on the first video, my cynical heart was truly warmed.

I think there is actually a pretty good chance that GRRM did actually have this in mind from the beginning. See one of the largest influences on GRRM is the works of Michel Morcock, witch can be seen in many aspects but most notably Valyria being heavily inspired by Melniboné, and one of the main ideas in his works is that every hero in every world is a reincarnation of a being known as The Eternal Champion. So the idea of everyone being the legendary hero was certainly something in GRRM's mind even early on.

I still think Arya will kill her mother's revenant, and she'll want to die after she knows she has at least one living child.

That's a good take, it would make sense for Arya to see Stoneheart as the logical extreme of her quest for vengeance and realise maybe that isn't what she wants after all

Interesting theory, but I'm more inclined to believe there is no Azor Ahai, no prince that was promised, no last hero. The prophecies are all false, and you actually made somewhat on a remark on it in this video; the stallion that mounts the world. Why do we talk about Azor Ahai being real, while the Dothraki prophecy is cast aside? Because we choose what we want to believe.
In Dune, the Bene gesseret planted the prophecy among the fremen long ago so they would believe the kwizat hadarak was their propheciesed messia. Prophecy as a tool to controll. I think GRRM is doing it in ASOIAF, as a meta commentary. He write his characters stories to fit the prophecies, and have character believing them, but you need to squint your eyes and turn your head to make it fit. But in the end, no one is truly azor ahai or a prophecised savior. Maybe we will see that by the end, or GRRM leave it ambigious. So with that, maybe he intentionally write all his POV characters to fit the prophecy, giving your theory credit.
A big argument I have for it is that GRRM clearly is not very fond of religion, and giving credence to a prophecy made from a religion that burn people alive seems like something he wouldn't do. I doubt any gods in the story is real, but that's only semi-related. But GRRM having some prophecised champion of a red fire god that take human sacrifices and send vague visions that leads to death and destruction? Cant see him rewarding that with some hero that bring down the great evil foe.

Yeah, you make a lot of good points. I agree that it would be a bit weird if the moral of the story was 'actually yes, they should have burned Edric Storm, Melisande was right the whole time and we should always trust religions, especially religions that burn people alive.' I think the role of the prophecies within the story will be mostly about what characters believe to be true.
Having said all that, magic and visions across time and space are a thing... So it might be more like some randomer thousands of years ago got a vague vision of the future somehow, no gods involved, and that's all the prophecies are

There certainly are prophetic dreams in ASOIAF, proved time and time again, but they are vague, possible to read in many different ways. I feel pretty certain there are no gods in the story, but the dreams might be sent from powerful magic users or a hivemind like the weirwood tree. I suspect not everything will be answered.
It's also interesting how GRRM has managed to make a lot of character fit the prophecy, leaving the readers to have the same speculation and "follow" different characters as their azor ahai, just like the characters. I wouldn't be suprised that your theory hold a lot of merit and it won't turn out to be jon snow or daenerys or anyone proclaimed azor ahai by the end by GRRM, but we will see a lot of the characters participate.
