Your videos (the good bits and bad!) encouraged me to take the leap of faith into the EV world, I get my ID3 on Saturday and cannot wait! The teething troubles don’t phase me and they will eventually get fixed. The driving experience is excellent, I had so much fun on the test drive with all the gadgets and the initial power of the motor - I understand why you want to drive it all the time 😂 Keep up the awesome work!
Thanks for all the informative id.3 videos. I got my id.3 on Friday, and I am booked for tomorrow to get a software update. Mine is not a 1.st ed. It is a Pro Life version. But I can not start the parking heater neither from car or app. So they are doing an update to se if it fixes it and some other small issues I have. Seat heater button: Another tip that have nothing to do with this video. But many people complain there is no button for the seat heater, but I found in the manual that if you tap two fingers on the slider for adjusting temperature it adjust the seat heater. Maybe someone has mentioned it before, but I have not found it. I also read that the big update scheduled for Q1 2021 is finished and are prioritezed for new id.3's beeing delivered now.
I believe that VW will sort out the problems behind the symptoms. How long this will take though....no idea. But you have shown us how some of the symptoms can be solved.
Started having identical symptoms today in my 1st Plus. Had to wait a few hours for the last error to disappear (left the car in the garage), and it seems like everything is back to normal! Thanks for the video :)
The soft reset is something I have had to do a few times in my 7 year old ICE Polo, obviously the ID.3 is more advanced, but the soft reset is useful to know in any VW car.
hi Chris , tnx for your tips they are very usefull an i will take them to my dealer when we have a conversation about the car greetings from a tiny country but have also a lot of id3 :-)
So happy to see your enthusiasm for being in the vehicle. I'm sure these bugs will be gone soon and you deal with them well. I just got my T4S, also an amazing car that I look for reasons to drive. But my Bolt EV is also fun. EVs are just fun.
You don't need to apologize for liking your car, as long as you report frankly your experience with it. It _was_ rushed a bit, but, as you said, this will be fixed.
Just got our id3. Just after two days the software is a pain to use. Super slow. Bugs everywhere. Freezes. Doesn't remember settings. Etc. Really hopes this gets fixed.
@@martialman.4563 Fair. And can be dangerous. But I hope Tesla sees the data and fixes it in the future updates. At least it is something fixable over software.
@@DarcersTech They will fix it once they get sued and loose. I am dealing with the Ohmuu 12V issue now so on old firmware, maybe it's better but doubt it.
Power drains are such a classic problem when new phones are being developed - it's a late stage kind of problem that you start to see only when the software and hardware is stable enough to be used for long periods. So this seems really just like a big phone :-). It certainly will get fixed and I'm sure you will just love your car more. :-). I am going to have to wait a few years and hope the second hand price comes down but it is sort of exciting in advance :-).
VW really need to fix these issues and once the 12 volt battery issue is fixed. VW should recall the cars for a new 12 volt battery. AGM batteries degrade fast when there deep cycled like this, i would view this as unfair wear and tear.
Yes lead acid batteries do not like to be deeply cycled (discharged) especially the ones for cars wich have very thin plates, so draining them so much like that will degrade them quickly, it's common knowledge that car battery can do about 100 full cycles while for example deep cycle ones with tubolar positive plates like the ones used for solar can do 1200, so i agree this bug can age the lead acid battery (not the lithium) faster if not updated soon.
@@martine.7758 I suppose it's a way to reduce the final costs so they can use standard car appliance at 12V instead of redesigning all stuff in a car for 300/400V DC wich i suspect would also increase homologation costs because of HV safety regulations, maybe they should just use a more powerfull dc/dc converter and avoid installing a standard lead-acid battery but who know maybe it will increase costs as a less powerfull dc/dc together with a battery could handle consumption peaks in a cheaper way or maybe than they don't want to keep the HV circuit energized 24/24h who know....
Actually, most of the time EVs are a great deal more boring than ICE cars with a clutch and a gear stick: Get into the EV, put your foot on the brake, select D and off you go. Most of the time you needn’t even bother to use the brake ;-)
I can’t believe VW had these problems. I love my MG ZS EV and like you it has been a learning curve. Good fun if you like that sort of thing. Great to see more EVs coming on the market. We all need to drive an EV to protect our children and grandchildren. Have fun. 👍👍👍
To solve all bugs do this: 1. root your car 2. flash TWRP 3. flash custom rom 4. have more fun What? Doesn't work? Who said that electric cars are smartphones with wheels? Ah...ok... only Polestar2 knows how to do it 😂
Another nice video Chris. I can't imagine why Walter White's BMS doesn't charge the aux battery when the car is not being used, (or am I mistaken?) I very often see the green light is on on my Kona indicating aux is being charged. And I agree with you for accepting the teething problems. Regards to Cindy and yourself, stay safe.
I test drove the ID.3 1St for fours days via the EV Experience Centre in the UK this weekend. My summary is that the ID.3 is in need of some small tweaks to the software and that they need to add some sound proofing to dampen out the road noise from metal (granite chip) road surfaces. The OS wouldn't boot on the second day and I set off without any displays, including the small driver display. I used Waze to give me my speed. No A/C either! After a couple of hours I managed to get it rebooted whilst on the road- hold down the haptic power button, whilst driving. I then had to park up, exit the car, lock it and then all the errors cleared after reboot,. Cruise control started to work again and the SOS system started. After that I just switched the A/C back on via the on screen power button. They need to add some physical buttons back IMHO and separate out the driver display from the Infotainment system. It's mad having both systems tied together. It's a great car otherwise. Just needs some debugging and some small chassis and suspension tweaks. My e-Golf 7.5 edition is a much better car. It may not have the range, but it is so well sorted and handles a lot better. I had the same problem with the e-golf, but as the AC has separate controls and the centre driver console runs independent form the main Infotainment system, I could still drive and see all my speeds and feeds. They out to make the e-golf again with a 200 mile battery. For me the e-golf wins hands-down. It's a real drivers car. The ID.3 feels modern, but just lacks the pedigree of the Golf.
The 12V battery drain occurs in all connected EVs. The 4g communication module for the coonected App has to be connected to power at all times. This will drain the 12V batt. In my Nissan Leaf 40kWh, the HV battery recharges the 12V one at intermittent times and when it senses the drop in voltage. A way of keeping your 12v battery topped up is to schedule a 15 minute preheat once or twice a day. Of course this will depleat the HV batt, but at least you will be able to start your car and drive to a Rapid charger if needed
Fascinating, thank you. There is no way that I put down a chunk of money to be subjected to all kinds of crap. I am not a test pilot and no manufacturers are getting away with treating me as such.
09:50 The voltage history looks very strange between 0 and 6 hours...was the car connected to AC charging? The dip between 6 and 7 hours looks like the car was unlocked or a door was open...did you do something to the car then? Just trying to understand and compare to what my car does...
[CTRL] [ALT] [DEL]... in the old days you would look under the bonnet and fiddle with some pipe that you have no idea what is doing. Now you can at least reset your car :-)
I have experienced similar issues with early years of new gas VWs models (I am a long time VW fan and have owned many). It's not clear how long it takes the 12V battery to discharge with this problem in the ID3, but I owned an 04 VW that would drain its battery due to parts of the car not shutting off properly when ignition was off. Also, all post-2000 VWs I have owned have a system when all the controllers in the car will react to a low battery by shutting off some functions. This generates error codes that can get stored / displayed until error codes are reset. I imagine with a 12V battery problem like this that you can get into this situation a lot. I am curious whether the ID3 (and the MEB platform in general) uses OBD2-like CAN bus connections and whether a VAGCOM will work with it. Anyone know?
I have the same 12V monitor. The State of Charge it displays is completely bogus. Don't rely on that. In addition to what you said in the end about the car, I also love the minimalist interior design. It adds to the sense of "peace and quiet" of the car. I recently got into a VW Golf 7 and the first thing I noticed is how "retro" it looks with all those lights and buttons...
If the problem of the lead acid battery disharge in the ID3 is related to the AC charging connected for a long time after the traction (lithium) battery charge is finished than it's the same that early Nissan Leaf models had as well as i know people with that old leaf model wich had your same problem after they left the leaf plugged on AC charge for some days and when they have come back the 12V battery was dead, on my 2018 leaf this problems seems to be fixed as i tested to leave it on charge (plugged in) for some days and all worked fine, the drain may come from handling of the the type 2 connector signals (someone call it mennekes), seems like nissan made an update on the new models so they turn on the dc/dc to charge the 12v battery by time to time, also if the car is disconnected and parked, i can confirm this because during the first lookdown i saw my leaf turning on the high voltage relay and charge the 12V battery for about 1 or 2 mins every few days also while parked and locked with they key far away.
Hi Chris, nice video again! I am watching most of your content and think it is very useful and fun. I have a question though, I also own a Id.3 and from the 6 week I have it in my possession, it was at my dealer for 3 weeks because of the 12v battery issue.. It is at the workshop at this very moment.. It seems they are getting no answer from the VW factory on how to fix the error.. Do you perhaps know what your workshop did to solve the draining issue? Or did they just load the battery, installed a sofware update and returned it to you? I hope you can help me getting my car back soon.. Thank in advance for your reply and new posts!
Thank you for giving us some insights on what's on the ID. First Movers Club Facebook channel, because that is limited to only "Norway, Germany, Denmark, Netherlands, Sweden, Italy, France, UK, Ireland, Switzerland and Spain" although VW is selling the same car including the missing features in multiple other countries. I bought it in Romania, at the same price, same missing features and they just told me that I wont be allowed in the 1st Movers Club because they can. I do feel very disappointed with VW....
Go to the id.3 prebookers Facebook page if you want to read some open, honest reporting of how people are doing with their id.3s. It's open, unlike the First Movers Club which is a VW-controlled "closed shop". You will find almost everyone loves driving the car but that many have had significant problems, with most not fixed yet.
My dashcam has a voltage reader, lowest I have seen is about 12.6V after car not been used for a few days. When driving/powered up seems to be around 14.5V or a little more. Looks normal. I have had very few problems with the software, except for not recognising the key fob a few times. Almost 2 months old, 3K km. Great car. And will get better...!!
Nun ja, mal sehen was noch kommt.
Hello I have found your videos very interesting and informative - Iv just picked up my ID3 yesterday and today has SOS error- anyone know how to clear this or does it require a workshop visit.
@@BatteryLife Thanks for the very quick reply . 😬 it’s had the update , after watching your video on the update I asked for it to be done before I collected the car
We bought a 2 year old 1st edition recently. The car is still on version 2.3 and the 12v battery is shot. The car appears to try to keep the 12v battery topped up from the traction battery and we can lose 5% a day when the car is not being used. I can stop the issue by simply plugging the car in on 13 amp granny cable for an hour a day as that tops up the 12v battery and vamp drain of the fraction battery disappears. The car is being updated at my dealer on Wednesday to 2.4 and a new 12v battery being installed. I shall be monitoring the car closely after this to be certain that there is not a problem with the fraction battery. When I feel happier I shall do an OTA update to 3.0. We love the car and accept that issues arise just as they do with fossil cars. We are not disappointed, yet.
4 days owning an ID3 max and I also love it. It's so nice to drive. So far, driven daily so probably not falling into the 12V battery trap, if it is in mine. Still, hoping that the software will be improved soon. Do you know if these new software releases will be OTA? I think the big s/w update that is planned in February or so will only enable OTA first.. or is this already active?
In the video we see you controlling the state of the battery on your phone. Can you tell us the name of the app you use to see the state of your battery on your phone? You put a device on your 12V battery that communicates to your phone the state of your battery. Thanks
Embarrassing for VW. 12v drain is a big issue for EV's that Nissan dealt with 10 years ago. The Leaf continually flashes a single charge light on the scuttle panel to warn of critical low 12v battery. Does The ID have anything similar?
I’m picking up my ID.3 1st plus in the UK next week.. when you say if you leave it standing for too long it will drain the battery.. how long is too long?
Less than 18 hours. I had a fully charged id.3 First Edition sat on my drive, having driven it the previous evening; I went out to it the next morning and it wouldn't move. You might also note that VW has not yet got the software working that allows you to connect up to your home charger but delay switching it on until the cheap rate becomes available. According to the owner's manual, that works by forcing you to record your home charger's location in the satnav system as a charging point; after that you can set a timer. Unfortunately, as the screen will tell you, that function is not yet available so you will be forced to pay for electricity at whatever rate applies when you connect your home charger. In my case, that nearly tripled my charging costs.
@@alanlowe5150 thanks! I have bought a home charger where I can set the charging time on the charger of when it should charge. So hopefully that will work.
Buying a vehicle from any auto maker during its first year of production is always a risk. The first year of production is spent working out the bugs, panel gaps, paint issues, and electronics. They will get it sorted out. It is annoying but not a reason to panic. Not having over the air updates for software is a huge disadvantage for VW. Hopefully they will change that soon.
Having the same 12v battery drain on ours. Seems that on very cold mornings the car loses its internet connection. Dealer suggested software update to 3.7. Anyone done this, did it fix the issue?
i had red triangle with the alarm , car cant be driving then, car pickup by dealer they replaced j533 canbusmodule (watchdog of canbussystem ) no more alarm
Question : when you unplug the - on the battery, and then plug it again, do you loose all your settings in the car (paired phones, infotainment, ...) ?
....or try... 1. Rub your tummy in a clockwise direction 2. Pat your head with your left hand 3. Keep smiling If this doesn’t work try: 4. Hop on your right foot while doing 1,2&3 If this still doesn’t work call Volkswagen...they have a list of other great ideas! 5. Keep smiling
Some of these errors only clear if you walk away from the car, turn anti-clockwise three times, stand on your head and then sing the Japanese national anthem in Greek whilst live-streaming on Facebook.
A Question! Why did you buy? Was it because it’s made in Germany? I ask because when you tested the Kona you said that was the car you wanted, so what changed you mind? And now with all these problems are you beginning to regret that choice, bearing in mind that the Korean car have given zero problems, I own the Kona EV and will soon have the Kia Nero electric as well.
No, i don't care it is German. I said it many times. Except for Regen it drives so much better than the Kona or any other EV i have driven. Comfort, quiet, steering wheel feel, stability,... I am not happy with the problems, but I can live with them when they get fixed at some point.
@@BatteryLife Thank for your honest reply as I’ve not driven the VW. I’m unable to comment, just a shame VW have so many clutches in their software and a pity that there’s no over the air updates, as Tesla do. I’m still happy I’ve gone for the Kia, but wish you good luck with your car and hope VW get all sorted soon. Personally I prefer the looks of the ID4.

There is also a fantastic model made by C-TEK (the C-TEK "BATTERY SENSE" wireless 12v battery monitor) - which is the one I fitted to my ID.3 several weeks ago, and it has been superb.
@@edstratton My CTek battery sense is not good enough, mostly due to the lackluster app, i can't export the data, i can't properly see the voltage over time (yeah, there is a graph, but it's useless as its scale goes from 0 to 25 volts and that makes it useless for a 12v battery)... i guess it helps to monitor the battery and see if its being charged or discharged, but its not good enough to see problems over time.
@@YouQuasel oh ! Where is that information? When I was chatting about getting a id.3 family the dealer said vw had no new information and couldn’t even guarantee a car arriving in 13 weeks would have the update
Moin Chris! Wäre cool von Dir, wenn Du die FAQ aus dem 1st. Mover Club mal in der id. - Gruppe auf Facebook posten würdest. Die Probleme haben ja nicht nur die 1st. Mover. VG
When I think back about the problems Tesla had and still has with interior, quality etc, I think it is normal for a new car to have some problems. The problems are not so big and VW will fix them. I really believe in that.
Maybe your 12v is discharging because of the always-on heating feature. That will heat the car when you're not in it. And when you're not in it, you said the main battery turns off. So maybe your car is heating with the 12v battery?
The light above the right rear seat has a mind of its own in my ID3. It turns on and off randomly while driving or sitting in the car. Sometimes it changes every 2 seconds, sometimes every few minutes. It usually turns off when I lock the car but I've had it today that it stayed on after locking. I unlocked the car by putting my hand in the right front door handle, then opening and closing the trunk and re-locking the car by touching the outside of the left front door handle. Then it stayed on while all other lights were turned off. I can imagine this could have drained my battery slowly overnight if I hadn't see it. Has anyone else have issues with their interior lights switching on and off randomly?
You should go to the workshop to have that fixed... i know someone that had that problem, he managed to fix it by removing the light and then placing it back, it was loose or something like that. You could try that, but i wouldn't do it, as you could do more harm than good unless you know what you are doing. My adivice: go to your dealership and ask them to fix it, they should be able to fix it fast and if they find that it's a faulty piece they can get a replacement.... but that will take a while as the pieces are scarce right now. I'm waiting for a couple of replacement pieces for my car, nothing serious, but it will take a while until they manage to get them, thankfully none of those pieces prevent me from using my car.
Hey!! I've had the same problem at least once!! Not sure if was just that 1 occasion only.. or happend more often.. I'll pay more attention from now on!! Id3 use: I've only done 1200kms so far.. also left the car few times without driving for several days and 12v battery always worked perfect.. although few times got the error messages that disappear next time you start the car.. so I feel lucky everything is going alright so far 🤞 and yeah, I also love my id3!!
@@Gresteh NO SPARE PARTS! Then car should not have been sold in your country if they havent educated the service technicians and supplied the replacement parts. Contact customer protection agency, I think if they cant fix a problem in 45 days since you reported it - you get a new car - dont be naive, tell them you will place a complaint and ask for new vehicle if it takes longer than 45 days - your car will be fixed in 10 days max!!!!! Besides, its not true there are no spare parts, there are unsold ID.3 and they can take parts from that, its not your problem. Tell me, did you pay full price or just 97% of what they asked? so why should you get anything less than 100% functional car? its their problem, and if they have to take your car back and give you another one, thats a clear 20k euro damage to them. SO why should you drive around and wait for them?! People you forget that is the company that made Dieselgate, that sold us all cars they said were better than others and charged premium money for that - and what? we will just be slaves to a big corporation that can do whatever they want? use the laws, educate yourself and threaten with lawyer. You can go to a lawyer and have them write a letter to dealer and pay that less than 100 euros. its not much to make them shit their pants :D and you can ask for that cost back also, all costs related to the resolving of the issues are responsibility of manufacturer.
After watching this video, I love my Toyota Venza Hybrid even more. Can’t believe VW is making new owners be Beta testers to work out bugs on these cars.
You 12V management When you are in the car that 14+ voltage means the battery is being charged from traction battery. When you got out - it was not charging - both these you mention You can measure status of a battery you can use the voltage (of course), but this is not reliable. The second option for a deep cycle battery is to measure the internal resistance of the battery by electronics to test this; never use a standard resistance meter as it will be destroyed - these devices match the 12V supply and test the current/resistance. A 12V battery status is about the amount of chemicals on the battery plates that can increase their resistance and eventually result in internal short. For an ICE 12V battery it is usually measured with the cold-crank current - but obviously this is not relevant for a deep cycle EV battery. 12V on light load is a very low voltage. All EV cars have a 12V battery - and always lead acid as it is the most reliable in this situation. This is because the 12V battery is under constant charge/discharge cycles which would kill a Li batter very quickly. All cars have "vampire" drain - the 12 battery being discharged as they run security systems when you are away. In ICE cars you have no way of seeing this - except you wake up one morning and your car does not start (very common in a Pandemic with cars being left for long periods). For an ICE car the discharge time is between 4-8 weeks. Some EV top up the 12V battery all the time (Tesla is the most talked about - and this is called vampire drain - the drain on the traction battery to keep the 12V battery in good condition - about 50-200 Wh with sentry mode off). Some EV do not charge the 12V battery when you are no in the car - the ID3 is one these cars - which means they can discharge the 12V battery but don't have visible vampire drain. I am sorry you are getting problem with your EV, there is clearly some system running all the time consuming the 12V battery charge - I hope it gets sorted soon. I am pleased you are really enjoying your ID3, it is a very good car. I really recommend you get VW to replace your 12V battery for free when the problem is sorted as deep drain on a 12V battery damages it, and they only last 2-4 years anyway if looked after.
The Leaf charges the 12V battery all the time too. A 30kWh Leaf can stand for several months before the 12V battery will go flat; I had one for 5 years. For VW not to get this right is simply inexcusably poor engineering and should be easily fixed.
@@alanlowe5150 remember, they made a software that faked diesel emissions based on couple of "indicators", open door, open hood, car revving - but they cant program a simple car like they had with e-up and e-golf - where is the problem? problem is the VW management that thinks all buyers are complete morons. I would return the car if single thing was not working right, say I have a big trip and need a loaner and of course, bill them the gas for it. Its their problem and in EU we have pretty strong laws about not working cars. If issue lasts longer than 45 days, car can be returned and new one must be provided. thats why we pay all those taxes, use your rights
Hi Chris, I heard today the workshop operators have discovered the root cause of the draining issue of the battery. They have replaced the control unit of the battery and the draining stopped. The solution is reported to VW factory and after approval the control unit will be replaced and I will finally retrieve my id.3 next week.. Perhaps this solution will also fix the problem of your car?! If this proves to be the solution I will retrieve the VW part number of this control unit and pass it on to you. If the draining problem on your id.3 is still not fixed perhaps you can ask your workshop to have them check wether this solotion can fix your car too? I hope I can cruise in my id.3 again next week!
Kind of glad I went with my Ioniq BEV instead of the ID.3. They got the price wrong and the number of issues is staggering. More than I would argue should be expected of a new model. I'll maybe look again at it in a few years, but by then Tesla will probably have something more affordable anyway.
@@raphi25895 No excuse when VW offer it to the public and charge $$. If this happened in North America, it would be classified as a "lemon." 3 times in the shop with the same unresolved problem (in this case software error messages, possibly the 12V draining problem) would trigger Lemon Law in some States.
@@ScubaSteveCanada the people get 3 rents for free which is exactly the time up to the serial version and by the way there was also the option to wait for the real version. So they knew what they were getting into.
Wow, a car (new) that need to be fixed by the owner... This is not the future of mobility that everybody is waiting for. What is more sas is the owner that is proud of this dangerous vehicle
Is it wrong to expect to just get a new car and drive it without issues these days. I would be very unhappy to have to fault find my own new car or go to dealers as much as you have. Outside of making TH-cam videos, how much time have you spent in 2 months dealing with issues and/or going to dealer?
Troy, yes you and many others would be unhappy. Many of the first movers are. I’m not, Chris isn’t. The problem as I see it is that VW released the car to people that aren’t cut out to be early adopters/beta testers or at least they were not fully informed about the state of the car to make an informed choice about delaying delivery until all the bugs were ironed out.
@@SeriouslyJaded Yes - exactly! And I am one of those poor sods who got caught in this VW trap! I went into the VW showroom and happened to see that they had an ID.3 1st Edition in stock - I didn't know much about the model but I liked it so I bought it there and then on a PCP deal! They did not tell me I would in fact be a beta tester for a car that was not really a finished development!!!! Then VW rubbed a lot of salt into a very open wound.... because just 3 weeks later they dropped the price by GBP £3000 !!!! So if I had waited a short time I would have saved a fortune!!! So all in all, I am absolutely furious about the situation. I will never buy another VW, which is a big shame because I was a huge VW fan.
@@abraxastulammo9940 No I paid £35880 (after the government grant was deducted) but then 3 weeks later VW introduced an additional £3000 "deposit contribution" on PCP deals - and since I was on a PCP deal myself, that was £3000 saving that I missed out on, just because I had the faith in VW to buy early. Great reward eh?
I find it very odd that a seriously faulty product is being accepted. Imagine if every electronic product had fundamental design faults like this, your life would be dominated by trying to fix them and tearing your hair out. The complexity of the problems and fixes you describe is beyond the understanding and patience of many. Its just a car that should give you trouble free motoring, and it isn't.
But imagine if you love using the product so much every day, then some faults that hopefully will get fixed soon, will bother you, but you deal with them.
@@BatteryLife love hope and patience is getting you through this. Another person will be in severe distress if not fury due to the failures. Some people will not be able to cope. In mid 2021 this car maybe wonderful, but the amount of time and mental energy VW's failures have demanded of you and others in my view is unforgivable. They owe you all a lot of euros in compensation.
@@jeremylister89 but then he’s a 1st mover and did. know there might be issues - others are waiting for the first Big software update… and to be honest it seems the hardware is top notch - though some might debate the interior 😜😱🤣
I heard there is a fix for most of the id3 issues, step 1 disconnect the 12v battery, step 2 after 10 minutes pour gasoline on id3 ( 5 liters should be enough, you had 10 minutes to get it) step 3 light it up from distance , step4 get back and enjoy the fire. After this, from the ashes, a floating carpet will emerge (Aladin's maybe?) and you can go wherever you want , free of charge, endless energy. No one tested this solution though, but it supposed to work. Just saying... P.S. and also the problem with the mobile app will be fixed, no car to connect anymore. The carpet doesn't come with wifi or bluetooth.
More than usual since VW rushed it to meet a deadline knowing the software would not be sorted out properly. This is why the first adopters aren't too upset - they knew what they were getting into.
Its a funny video, i would do the same and would be very happy to have fixed it. I really like the car, software looks still a bit beta, but vw will get there.
I hope you got something out of it, as this is time consuming and nerve eating. When you go to a VW service and you tell them "can you look at this for a second, or check that" they tell you come Friday and it will cost you xx$. Now you are doing all those thing on your expense. And all of your community is doing it on their expense. I hope that they appreciate your work with a free service or ... And really hope that they do not make things worse and have to fight for your #righttorepair locking every computer. Enjoy your car, happy motoring.
I think it would be a good idea for you to suggest to VW that they could follow Polestar's example and add an extra years warranty, as a good will gesture. We will be right behind you. Love the car too, and it's 0 carbon heritage. We are hoping to collect our id3 family at the end of the month. Great videos and info, keep it up.
of course you masterful human fixed it!!! just love the realness of your information and presentations
You’re very brave! ;-)
Great video! It will help a lot here in Portugal!
All the best!
Thanks for the great video. Interesting that these things have not been noticed when VW did all their testing.
The vw shareholders forced the car on the market halfe backed.
The Software Team knew about the Probleme and was overruled.
Nice to see you are makeing progress and things are improveing.
Great video again Chris! Its getting better and better👍👍😁😁
Great info. Thank you! I need to go on a long distance road trip too. I drive for a living and still love driving my own car so much.
Seems like that the ID.3 is the cyberpunk 2077 of the carworld. - But nice video, as always.
The soft reset is something I have had to do a few times in my 7 year old ICE Polo, obviously the ID.3 is more advanced, but the soft reset is useful to know in any VW car.
hi Chris , tnx for your tips they are very usefull an i will take them to my dealer when we have a conversation about the car

So very true as you are very open about all the issues!!!
Appreciate the honest review
Just got our id3. Just after two days the software is a pain to use. Super slow. Bugs everywhere. Freezes. Doesn't remember settings. Etc. Really hopes this gets fixed.
So geht's mir auch.

Good grief, this list of errors are incredible, and the lack of fixes.
Loved your 12v battery monitor. Should be standard option
Its is a Beta Car so problems are propably the real serial version starts 2021
The car does know the voltage of the battery, you can probably read it via CAN bus and get graphs, etc.
Wait they have a lead acid battery in a HV Li-Ion Battery EV? 😂 That’s funny.

Have fun. 👍👍👍
To solve all bugs do this:
1. root your car
2. flash TWRP
3. flash custom rom
4. have more fun
What? Doesn't work? Who said that electric cars are smartphones with wheels?
Ah...ok... only Polestar2 knows how to do it 😂
Another nice video Chris.
I can't imagine why Walter White's BMS doesn't charge the aux battery when the car is not being used, (or am I mistaken?) I very often see the green light is on on my Kona indicating aux is being charged.
And I agree with you for accepting the teething problems.
Regards to Cindy and yourself, stay safe.
Walter does not.
For ANY brand new car, not just an update to an existing model, but a BRAND NEW model, you have to expect "teething troubles".
Any brand new German car.
I fully agree with you - enjoy my ID.3 1Plus. I've driven a lot of BMW cars, so the ID.3 looks more like a BMW than a VW when it comes to driving :-).
I can‘t wait to go home from work either, no matter what car. 😅
wrong job?
The 12V battery drain occurs in all connected EVs. The 4g communication module for the coonected App has to be connected to power at all times. This will drain the 12V batt. In my Nissan Leaf 40kWh, the HV battery recharges the 12V one at intermittent times and when it senses the drop in voltage. A way of keeping your 12v battery topped up is to schedule a 15 minute preheat once or twice a day. Of course this will depleat the HV batt, but at least you will be able to start your car and drive to a Rapid charger if needed
After watching your videos, I love my Kona Electric even more! 😂

Fascinating, thank you. There is no way that I put down a chunk of money to be subjected to all kinds of crap. I am not a test pilot and no manufacturers are getting away with treating me as such.
Your loss. It drives amazing. Once the software is running as supposed to. It will be amazing!
09:50 The voltage history looks very strange between 0 and 6 hours...was the car connected to AC charging?
The dip between 6 and 7 hours looks like the car was unlocked or a door was open...did you do something to the car then? Just trying to understand and compare to what my car does...
All true what you said.
[CTRL] [ALT] [DEL]... in the old days you would look under the bonnet and fiddle with some pipe that you have no idea what is doing. Now you can at least reset your car :-)
VW should have the status of the 12 volt battery displayed on the center screen and provide a warning when the state of charge drops too low.
It does show a low voltage warning. But not helpful when you are not in the car
The ID3 works with OBD11, therefor yes, the MEB uses OBD2 :)
That's the reason I am still waiting and I never would buying a first edition.
Could you do a range test now that the weather is colder and you have winter tires on?
Colder already done. Video online. Heat consumption. Winter tire video coming on Thursday.

Software update I think.
@@BatteryLife
Thanks for the very quick reply .

Embarrassing for VW. 12v drain is a big issue for EV's that Nissan dealt with 10 years ago. The Leaf continually flashes a single charge light on the scuttle panel to warn of critical low 12v battery. Does The ID have anything similar?
There is 12V low warning yes.

@@justus6564 I thought it was quite short like 2 days
It is implemented in the not beta software.

I heard it from someone else too. Mostly likely the sensor in the light is faulty, workshop.

So Volkwagen doesn't know the problem but it will be fixed in the next update? Sounds a bit strange xD
hey who can help me with the lights they say are unvalible?
2024 and I am experiencing the batterie drain issue :(
The first VW was called bug haha. But this is one got them haha
After watching this video, I love my Toyota Venza Hybrid even more. Can’t believe VW is making new owners be Beta testers to work out bugs on these cars.
It is not nice. But I am glad I already have the car.
You 12V management
When you are in the car that 14+ voltage means the battery is being charged from traction battery.
When you got out - it was not charging - both these you mention
You can measure status of a battery you can use the voltage (of course), but this is not reliable.
If issue lasts longer than 45 days, car can be returned and new one must be provided. thats why we pay all those taxes, use your rights
haaa a good reset ^^
They should charge the 12V battery from time to time like the kona.
@timemachine_194 They would be smarter to use a Lifeypo4 12 V battery in that case (almost no self discharge).
Thanks
Kind of glad I went with my Ioniq BEV instead of the ID.3. They got the price wrong and the number of issues is staggering. More than I would argue should be expected of a new model. I'll maybe look again at it in a few years, but by then Tesla will probably have something more affordable anyway.
The ID 3 is a first mover beta car the real version starts 2021
As long as it has OTA updates it should constantly improve.
It is NOT dangerous!
@@BatteryLife it is DEFECTED. So that's why this car does not go to the US. there probably it will not be tolerated.
You get the Id.4 soon. Exact same car. Just a different shell.
@@edstratton The ID.3 1st is currently 38,880 GBP, you say you actually paid 41,880 GBP or are you just confused about the 3000 GBP government grant?
Ed Stratton So, are you selling your car? Doesn't sound like you will be very happy continuing to own it. Best wishes. Cheers.
Sounds like a lot of early adopter issues.
Don't worry. i will ;)
I think it would be a good idea for you to suggest to VW that they could follow Polestar's example and add an extra years warranty, as a good will gesture. We will be right behind you. Love the car too, and it's 0 carbon heritage. We are hoping to collect our id3 family at the end of the month. Great videos and info, keep it up.
vw appreciates your work so much they will sell you cars that will kill you and your children - such a nice company.
@@rcajavus8141 And you believe that no other manufacturers ice cars will pollute or harm anyone. Irrational!
