For CAF, wildlife photo shooting, it's like a 1000% improvement. I shot all day yesterday at Sac National Wildlife Refuge. Large flying raptors, small Kestrels, Golden Eagle, flying and hunting thru hundreds of ducks and geese trying to escape out of it's target zone, the CAF lock and tracking never lost the raptor. It's an insane improvement. Even Peregrine Falcon and Red-tail Hawks, dropping from perched branch, flying straight at me, then thru trees, the CAF acquired perfect focus and stayed locked on. My XH2s and 150-600mm lens work superb now.
@ Hi and sorry for my delay. I used CAF and custom, +4, for Lock On and +2 for tackiness, with Center for priority. It’s awesome, and I see a large improvement.
I just did yesterday. I was excited after seeing the video was good. News Update: In stills, mode, it's still a disaster. Fujis are broken. I'll still keep my XH2 cause' its great for everything else I do.
I found the same thing as you. AF is good I was most impressed with the object tracking. I did a test with the 16-55mm f2.8 in various focal lengths and it worked out really good.
The walking test with a telephoto is a realistic scenario for event and wedding photographers, let alone sport photographers. The lens motors are not the issue, they can focus from minimum focus distance to infinity in a split second, why should it be an issue to move focus a few centimeters per second then? The result from the running test with a wide angle lens is just embarrassing considering how long of a way you had to go and how large the depth of field was for most of the time. Other brands reached above 95% in such tests years ago even with average lenses. The X-H2S has a stacked sensor with 26MP and very capable processor.
Yes, I love my Fuji cameras for travel photos and the ease of editing files but it does not compare in AF for weddings once I tried the Sony a7iv. I use the XT5
We don't need the newest firmware to simply revert to what was available years ago. And for anything professional, this still isn't usable. Focus on the tree to the right even in the latest update video for the hunting and clear stepping. You had you chance fuji. I'll be selling
Conclusion from reading the comments. Those looking for an excuse to stay with Fujifilm are happy with the results. Those looking for an excuse to switch, or to justify having switched to another brand, are disappointed with the results. Thanks to Luca for taking the time to do this test. I'm really looking forward to hearing how the new firmware handles real-life stills.
@@LucaPetraliaPhotography please can you use the longest focal length you have wide open? I'm still on X-T3 with XF200mm because no update I've tried had been significantly better. Sad, but true in my experience.
@garethcallan8335 the only long lenses I have are the 70-300 and the 150-600. None of them are particularly fast when it comes to aperture. I'll be testing the 150-600 for wildlife in the next weeks
@@LucaPetraliaPhotography p Thank you. Would also be interesting to repeat your 'sprint' test towards the lens.... You'll really fill the frame and that's when the AF-C shows if it really works... When subject is coming towards it quickly.
Thank you for showing. There is a lot of information regarding this topic but some people just demonize the AF and some are just trolls. I am getting great results coming from an X-T4, but especially in Video I have seen weird behaviour and sometimes for birds the box is there and focusing on the background. As I have not found a single video saying something has gotten worse in 7.1, I am going to update soon myself and see If I notice any difference.
Thanks for doing all his work. I was going to say, if this lens you did the continuous shooting test is the XF56 first one, that lens is not optimal for fast AF. Would have been interesting to see something like the XF33 F1.4.
@@LucaPetraliaPhotography Well, if we are judging the camera improvement or lack of AF, I think using a lens that we know will focus slower may not show much improvement. I think it's a fair test so people know if there was any improvement, but I think from the get go it sure puts a cap on whatever algorithm can do even if it's Sony Class AI.
Totally appreciate the work that you did putting this video together and I really enjoy all your videos, however if you are satisfied with this firmware autofocus "fix" I have to say that you are easily pleased. Some of those results were just plain awful. If I were someone considering investing in the Fujifilm system and saw those test results I would be very worried and would look at other systems. I have been a Fujifilm user since X-T1. I recently sold my X-S10 as I want to upgrade to a used X-T5 and then look at the X-T6 when that comes out in 2025. I am seriously considering my decision now and have real concerns as to whether Fujifilm can actually fix the autofocus issue to the level where it is usable as in my opinion right now it is not. Useable is probably not the right word as in my mind it is not enough. Reliable autofocus is what I want and reliable under many shooting conditions. I might hold out until the X-T6 comes out to see what the autofocus is like before I decide what to do as I have a ton of Fuji lenses and I am pretty much invested in the system and I would take a decent financial hit if I were to sell them and have to buy into another system.
Hi, I’m exactly in the same position as you, a lot of Fuji lenses. Even with the latest update I don’t feel totally satisfied. I recently shot eagles from hides with the h2s with 150-600 on tripod and wasn’t satisfied still too slow and missed quite a lot. Anyway on Fuji firmware web you can read “The AF algorithm has been partially revised to improve focusing accuracy and subject tracking performance”. Partially meaning for me that we are not yet there. Now Considering Sony a7 R V, for my wildlife photography and keep my X-T5 for landscape, travel and street photography. I’ve with Fuji for the last 13 years but wasn’t doing wildlife photography. Cheers
Yours is working in Stills mode? My white square constantly jumps to botton right of screen. And when it actually locks on something, it doesnt actually focus. (No green Square).
I would really like to see you test another camera maker's AF with the same criteria. I think hit rates are a bit subjective as you said. But I feel you'll be able to be consistent, so your rates with another brand will be comparable with the ones you found here. I don't think it makes sense to draw comparisons to other people's say "95% hit rates" when their test was probably different and their criteria, too. Bonus if you could do it with the same 3rd party lens on both cameras, e.g. Sigma 56 1.4 on Fuji and Sony.
Grazie mille Luca. Una domanda : non ho ancora consultato il sito di Fujifilm ma che tu sappia l’aggiornamento di cui tu parli vale anche per la semplice XH 2 di cui sono possessore?
Great video, again. Firmware update: Disappointing, as always. A simple bugfix. Shooting a conference yesterday, face AF wasn't useable, when there were many faces in the frame, the system ignored the AF box totally. I was happy to leave the XH2s in my bag, the Z8 did the job. The AF hit rate in your scenario (portrait, walking, 56mm) is simply awful. Fujifilm isn't able to design a fast focusing portraits lens in the range 40-80mm. This makes the situation even worse. "Good enough" is their benchmark, but they missed it again. This is the level of Sony in 2020/2021?
Fuji dependent on AF setting. I shot a wedding in September with a lot of people. I didn’t have any trouble with XH2 and previous FW but also knew ahead of time how to work with and adjust AF settings.
9:00 pretty the main issue with AF I see on my X-H2s. That is, according to this video, still not fixed. Jumping in an out of the screen, always looks a kind of idiotic - and actually it is. Plus: For action one would choose a different AF mode anyway. Having C1-7 that can be addressed. But this looks to be the YT thing to test.
14:25 exactly! 10 years and longer ago people were able to take Portraits - arent they? I dont get it, isnt it the job of a photographer? Besides tha fact, of course, that sharpness isnt the job of a photographer to beginn with.
