Great video, but AF isn’t much better in reality. There’s no reason to stay with Fuji anymore. Most of the images can be manipulated in lightroom to that Fuji look, the build of the XT5 is poor. Thanks for the tests. While Fuji cameras aren't rated highly for auto-focus tracking of birds in flight (despite the bird recognition feature) hopefully this firmware update will improve (or return to the somewhat usable version before 'that' update broke things).
Thank you for sharing this! I updated my X-T5 the first day, I did a few portraits and it looks better but I need more time to judge, here in Portland Oregon is rainy every single day, nothing to test the AF-C at home. Thank you Pete!
Man, that bass solo is great. As for the AF, I haven't updated my X-T50 yet, cause I'm actually fine with it and I don't want to make it worse... So much for the trust in firmware updates😅
@tomwerner352 nah, I want something thst can top it, if not then Zf with that lens is only choice and those who get close to similar specs even it's in crop sensor has similar weight and size, not pocketable too, hence why not just full frame, I think better get a good size with good range camera or else get a true pocketable camera, I will get Zf + 28-400 + 14-30 + a silver or colourful marking small lens to match the aesthetic + iPhone 15 By the way, I'm a freelance designer and I'm looking for more works, would you love to have a logo and merch prints and other works you like me to do for you? I use my XT5 mainly for videos and I updated the firmware as soon as it came out and did some tests. So compared to the previous firmware that messed the Af this update fixed the AF bug. Just fixed and it now the af works thats it! This update does not bring any improvements or new features. Fujfilm fixed what they broke.
I’m glad they improved it on the XT5. I haven’t had time to test it out. I can’t wait to take it out for a spin. Edit: also, you have the weirdest people hating and nitpicking at basically nothing on your videos. It’s quite hilarious.
@@PeteCocoPhoto you’re a super chill guy based on what I can tell from the videos. People are just soft and take things further than it needs to be. That’s the internet.
usually my trick for shooting live musicians on video, on a Fuji... which I do A LOT (XT-30ii, amusingly NEVER updated the firmware) AFC, but spot focusing. usually stick that little square somewhere middle width, 2/3rds height. which more often than not, usually lands on people's faces singing on microphone when I pan past them, and/or faces behind drums and/or fingers plucking instruments. and if it doesn't, just quickly whizz that square where I need it with the touchscreen. ...yeah maybe this is slightly easier, because I just use the screen, not the EVF. and it's only EVER failed me (briefly) once if a horrifically/EXTREMELY backlit gig, where it lost someone's face completely. but that's like... one fail, out of 200, in the past year or so. ... but I'm also curious whether there's a better way to do it. and if my method ONLY works using the touchscreen/no EVF?
sweet B&W photos btw, and I can definitely understand why you made them B&W with that NASTY electric blue (I'm assuming LED light) backlighting. yeouch! small venues, amiright? hahaha
One thing I found is to use AFC CUSTOM to set tracking stickiness to max when shooting in a chaotic environment like you have here. Face detect plus max stickiness will tend to reduce the jumping from the face to the mic and then back to the face. Choosing a better vantage point so that the singer eyes never go behind the mic in the frame, helps a lot too. (Sorry, had to add that). In a recent studio test, I found that my Sony ZV-E10 was actually worse than my Fujifilm X-S20 when it came to dealing with objects passing between the face and the camera. I'm sure that most people would assume that the Fujifilm would come off as second best, just based on reputation. I sometimes wonder with these AF reviews how much Fujifilm's AF reputation colours the interpretation of the results.
This is all good to know, Finally trade in my xt30ii and too many lenses for XT5 today. Bought the new 16-50 kit lens for the all arounder. Question for everyone here. 33 1.4 , 27 1.2 Viltrox, Sigma 30 1.4 for my fast prime?
I’ve owned both the new Fuji 33 1.4, and Viltrox 27 1.2 at the same time. I sold the Fuji. The Viltrox was noticeably better in IQ. But the Fuji was noticeably smaller.
@@TheJ_GEveryone says the Viltrox. Guess I just have to go hold both of them and see if the Viltrox is too big roaming around the city. The price is bananas. Thanks for the input!!
"Partially"... I mean, it is just stupid of Fujifilm not to come clean. Doesn't help their reputation at all. I have to admit that I have serious doubts if Fuji lands my next big investment in camera gear.
@PeteCocoPhoto Well, I really like my Fuji gear, which, to be honest, has worked fine for my needs, so I would be hard pressed to leave. But, personally I can't shell out 4000 dollars on new Fuji gear with this behavior as it is. I would do some Nikon or Canon research first. Thanks Pete for your videos.
I'm selling my FF Sony gear for gfx 50sii lol .... Huge step back in af but i don't shoot video and I'm completely fine with manual focus being an old fart. I shot sports with manual focus film cameras in the day so it's whatever. I'm just after the beautiful files of that sensor. Loaded some up in Lightroom and was blown away by them. High iso noise is so smooth and manageable. A joy to work with the raw files compared to Sony.
As others noted, not amazing but better. In my opinion, it looks like to me that Fuji will delay releasing the X-T6/X-pro4 until they get their shit together. I am not sure they will but Japanese companies are known for joint development. At this point they should team up with Sony or Nikon and just work on something together or pay licensing/royalties. I regret bringing my Fuji for the Christmas trip, wish I had primes for my Nikon Z8.
I'm really struggling to choose between the Sony a6700 and XT5 just because of this. If it's not the case I would definitely go with the XT5 as I love Fuji colors and look, but the AF makes me hesitate
It's improved over the previous broken firmware, yes. But if you compare it to v2.10 it is worse for me with AFC + subject detection. I think they just reverted the firmware to a previous version and have not done anything to improve it. It still switches to the background a LOT. It is not usable for video in my opinion.
This video has an "Inside Llewyn Davis" vibe to it with some kind of John Belushi moves in the end. It's an odd in between realties environmental kind of feel. Kind of like a college bar where people kind of grew too old to be in the college bar, and yet not a college bar, but the people are too old to really be there, but they are there. Not arrested adolescence but aborted adulthood? Hard to describe the impressions. But thanks for the video, interesting shots. I found the update for stills on the x100VI much improved on initial use, but have to look into things more to say much. Best wishes!
It’s funny how they didn’t listen to you saying “I use my canon R5 for my pro jobs over the Fuji” paraphrasing. They still think you are a Fuji main when you are a canon main and actually say it in a video but yet they still think you are a Fuji main lol.

I'm starting to think a lot of them are paid by SoNiCa to spout shit. Who on earth watches a random autofocus firmware update from another system? Why? Makes no sense to me
Really? I think Canon is the most hated brand by far. And Fuji fanboys play a major role in that regard. As if any consumer played any role in the creation of these wonderful products. The simple fact is if you need the best AF performance for your type of photography, then Canon and Sony rules. Honestly, I mainly shoot birds and wildlife, so portrait photography is not a priority for me. But sometimes I need to do a portrait. I use a manual focus lens for that with a very thin DOF at down to F0.95. What a portrait or street photographer does with world class AF I don’t know. People are just weird I guess.
I updated both of my Fuji cameras the XT5 and the GFX 100 SII and I did notice a significant improvement. I was quite nervous which I've mentioned to you about upgrading the GFX 100S ii because that was actually working quite well but after seeing a few comments online and a few other people mentioned it to me that it was fine I was good to go. I think your video is very accurate. I think video shooters or content creators are going to struggle. I think it's gonna be fine for Talking Heads videos but for multi face type scenarios like weddings or events then the camera is going to struggle and then you've got a decision to make around. Is this the camera system you need to use for video but from a stills perspective and maybe I'm biased but I shoot stills mostly the camera is great. I was at a Christmas function with my family and I was just playing around taking some photos of the family and I was really impressed with how sticky the XT5 was again and I keep saying this to a lot of people one setting I do change and I would recommend you have a play with this. It's not always ideal in certain scenarios but pick one eye left or right what you'll find is that it then? Doesn't jump to the other eye it's not looking. It just settles on the left or the right eye. This is more ideal if the person is in front of you straight on obviously but that has some practical application applications. I do feel like the XT5 is now workable for this type of scenario around taking photos of portraits and so on which is good. I feel this time at least they took their time getting it right and we've now got a camera that's workable. I'm not one of those people as you know that's going to spit the dummy and carry on and whinge and moan. I will just find work around. Overall I've got to a point of acceptance and that acceptance phase is accepting that the camera is not perfect and then you can actually work with it as opposed to trying to make something perfect and getting angry about it is not gonna achieve anything you have to understand that every camera has strength and weaknesses for me. The image quality and colours out of Fuji far outweighs the fact that it doesn't focus all the time because I will just still get the shot somehow with the workaround tricks that I know but other people are purely looking at it from a focus perspective and I think that's dangerous because the camera probably is not going to suit you. Everything is a weigh up process.
I've watched hundreds of videos about Fujifilm to research every camera and every lens, and the biggest takeaway is that there's always autofocus problems for every camera and every lens, and almost every reviewer is complaining about autofocus in almost every video. How can Fujifilm be so incapable of resolving this? I decided to cancel my Fujifilm system I was planning on building for video.
Fuji's kit is way too expensive for a crop sensor system with the worst AF behind everyone except Olympus. Most of the glass can't resolve the 40mpx either.
I use Fuji since 2016 and ill never used the AF-C on the cameras. Why should i ? Fuji is for me joy of using and unbelievable good colours straight out of camera . Thats it and its everything i need , cheers
@ thanks for the prompt reply. Seems like the right move. I own the Nikon Zf, and it’s notably better in AFC. Still love the 40 MP sensor, colors, and workflow from the Fuji so I’ll gladly keep it at 2.10 and use it for daytime travel/landscape. If I wanted perfection or was a working pro, I’d buy Sony or Canon. But hobby photography is more than technical perfection, and the Nikon/Fuji combo gets me user experience and pleasing results SOOC. PS. Don’t let the petulant children floating around here get under your skin.
Thanks for another great video. Here’s my take on the whole AF issue. In 2 years of owning my X-T5 it’s never been in movie mode so my comments are limited to stills.Happy with the update, eye tracking seems stickier especially when on lock to a specific eye. Prior to Fuji I started my hobbyist journey with a couple of Sony APSC cameras and shot loads of pics of my newborn granddaughter with AF in auto and many were out of focus - newbie user error. Only when I switched to X-T4 and now X-T5 did I learn and understand the exposure triangle, helped by the dials. Now able to concentrate on other aspects of photography like focusing and improving steadily. This whole AF issue is starting to bore me. Simple answer - if the AF is bothering someone so much then move to a different brand and stop revisiting Fuji videos and whining. Secondly, Pete is a professional photographer who shares his experience at no cost or benefit to himself - if you don’t like the content then start your own channel and show us how to do it. Rant over
In all honesty shooting a video of a band performing is a challenge for any camera, you can’t expect the camera to know which person it should lock on unless you track that person. Best for those case scenarios is setting your camera’s aperture to f4 and focus manually on your subject, increase your ISO and clean up your files in post….this way at least you come with footage that is in focus and no pulsing/hunting. And if you want to shoot with AFC on video at let’s say f2 or f2.8 (the Hollywood standard aperture) just set your camera focus limiter around your subject and practice, practice!
Sorry to say that those kind of vlog concerning fujifilm autofocus update is the same since 10 years. Please stop saying there’s improvement but still room to get better because it still lack A LOT !!! Make it simple by comparing with Sony, canon, Nikon or else in the same range of camera then and only then we could appreciate improvement….or not. Again sorry to be that straight but it’s like a quiz that would say “ what is the difference between a duck ? “ 😂😂
No matter what Fuji does technically, they need to improve on communications! Just try and watch their Stockholm events from 2023 and any other release event… the Japanese/English is horrendous, and they deliver near zero value beyond what the slides in their presentations state
Ignore the sh*t posters. People want you to think that the trouble they are having MUST be true for all cameras. It's not true. They are in a small minority.
This comment section is why Fuji will probably soon go out of business. And we will lose some great potential stuff forever. Incredibly egotistical. Wow. Incredibly egotistical. Has to, HAS TO, feel good about “my camera”.
All I said in the vid was that it improved. And I said they have a ways to go and it’s still not near my Canon gear. And if it sucks that much it’s time for another brand. It’s that simple.
1. You why are you being an apologist? Most TH-camrs know how to shoot. They are not noobs and you’re not god’s gift to photography. You don’t have to condescend at all to make whatever point you’re making if that point passes on its own merit. Isn’t it? Agree or disagree? 2. If those “stupid tests” are okay for a Sony Nikon or Canon, why are they bad to evaluate a Fuji? 3. I took out the Xt5 to shoot. It occasionally focuses on things for stills. Mostly misses. And on video the AF looks like a 2014 camera focusing with 1 step at a time. It’s stupid because THIS IS NOT THE CAMERA WE BOUGHT. This shite needs to stop. If this is adequate AF, don’t freaking come around and talk about how good the AF is when they launch the NEXT gen cameras with better AF. If this is good, any improvement should be no biggie. But this ain’t good at all. It’s the worst af I have ever used in last 6 years.
Ok so clearly you didn't listen to what I said at all. You just wrote this comment after being triggered. I said that these running around vids do have some value, but they are NOT THE SAME as a real-world situation. At this point I'm not sure how people can't understand this.

The AF seems usable, especially in those low-light conditions and with third-party lenses, the result is decent.
Yeah it was solid. Not blowing my mind but worked
Informative AF update impression. Hope it improves confidence for users of the XT-5.
My pleasure as always
@@PeteCocoPhoto Thank you! I've corrected all my typos! Gorilla's thumbs, I need a 32 inches mobile home! 😁
Man, that bass solo is great. As for the AF, I haven't updated my X-T50 yet, cause I'm actually fine with it and I don't want to make it worse... So much for the trust in firmware updates😅
Thanks! I don’t trust the updates I do it for you all. 😆😆😆 but this one seems okay so far
Nice video, Pete. Nobody should expect perfection from Fuji, but they should better communicate with their customer base.
100% and they should have af on par w others by now too
Tracking was also working very good, or average good, in previous version. Tracking and 2-0 on AFC settings.
This is a good point. Is is better than befor or just back to where it was previously? I have no idea lol
@@PeteCocoPhoto better than before. For my use case, daylight kids’ soccer, enough. But yeap, now better than before.
Is there a lens to match a Zf with 28-400mm in Fuji lens lineup?
You could use the Tamron 18-300 / it’s a 28-450 equivalent
@tomwerner352 but the stabilisation isn't as nice
Depends if you need it or already have IBIS in the camery body. Fuji XF18-120 is also available but afaik also without OIS
@tomwerner352 nah, I want something thst can top it, if not then Zf with that lens is only choice and those who get close to similar specs even it's in crop sensor has similar weight and size, not pocketable too, hence why not just full frame, I think better get a good size with good range camera or else get a true pocketable camera, I will get Zf + 28-400 + 14-30 + a silver or colourful marking small lens to match the aesthetic + iPhone 15
By the way, I'm a freelance designer and I'm looking for more works, would you love to have a logo and merch prints and other works you like me to do for you? It will allow me to get these setup quicker too
I use my XT5 mainly for videos and I updated the firmware as soon as it came out and did some tests.
I’m glad it’s not me who feels that way. Sometimes I think I must be a terrible person but then… nah can’t be that 😆
@@PeteCocoPhoto you’re a super chill guy based on what I can tell from the videos. People are just soft and take things further than it needs to be. That’s the internet.
Great photos. Thanks for the info.
Thank you!
usually my trick for shooting live musicians on video, on a Fuji... which I do A LOT
(XT-30ii, amusingly NEVER updated the firmware)
AFC, but spot focusing. usually stick that little square somewhere middle width, 2/3rds height. which more often than not, usually lands on people's faces singing on microphone when I pan past them, and/or faces behind drums and/or fingers plucking instruments. and if it doesn't, just quickly whizz that square where I need it with the touchscreen.
...yeah maybe this is slightly easier, because I just use the screen, not the EVF.
and it's only EVER failed me (briefly) once if a horrifically/EXTREMELY backlit gig, where it lost someone's face completely. but that's like... one fail, out of 200, in the past year or so.
...
but I'm also curious whether there's a better way to do it.
and if my method ONLY works using the touchscreen/no EVF?
sweet B&W photos btw, and I can definitely understand why you made them B&W with that NASTY electric blue (I'm assuming LED light) backlighting. yeouch!
small venues, amiright?
Cheers, Pete, great review and comment.
Thanks 🙏
This is all good to know, Finally trade in my xt30ii and too many lenses for XT5 today. Bought the new 16-50 kit lens for the all arounder. Question for everyone here. 33 1.4 , 27 1.2 Viltrox, Sigma 30 1.4 for my fast prime?
I have the 27 1.2 and really like it
I’ve owned both the new Fuji 33 1.4, and Viltrox 27 1.2 at the same time.
You’re not the only one. They definitely did a terrible job handling all of this. What are you considering instead?
@PeteCocoPhoto Well, I really like my Fuji gear, which, to be honest, has worked fine for my needs, so I would be hard pressed to leave. But, personally I can't shell out 4000 dollars on new Fuji gear with this behavior as it is. I would do some Nikon or Canon research first. Thanks Pete for your videos.
Nice bass!
🙏
I'm selling my FF Sony gear for gfx 50sii lol .... Huge step back in af but i don't shoot video and I'm completely fine with manual focus being an old fart. I shot sports with manual focus film cameras in the day so it's whatever. I'm just after the beautiful files of that sensor. Loaded some up in Lightroom and was blown away by them. High iso noise is so smooth and manageable. A joy to work with the raw files compared to Sony.
Even though I don’t need the AF to be better, I still updated. :P (Commenting for the algorithm tbh.)
Appreciate it!!
I’d like to have seen you review this with one of the Fujifilm lenses to get a better idea if it is indeed better 🏴
I used that lens because of the lighting situation. It’s on par w Fuji lenses in terms of af accuracy as well
I'm really struggling to choose between the Sony a6700 and XT5 just because of this. If it's not the case I would definitely go with the XT5 as I love Fuji colors and look, but the AF makes me hesitate
You and everyone else lol. The af is still not going to be close to Sony
@PeteCocoPhoto And compared to canon AF system, is it similar? ( as I'm a canon user and looking to switch )
@@MAwroutna- it’s not as good as Sony or canon or Nikon
@@PeteCocoPhoto I see, Thank you sir I appreciate your time
Wait..? You play bass?
I do.
So like what about Leica AF as a comparison 😅
😆😆😆
What's more important is that Sony color science.
This comment is much deeper in meaning than my video. 😆
It’s funny how they didn’t listen to you saying “I use my canon R5 for my pro jobs over the Fuji” paraphrasing. They still think you are a Fuji main when you are a canon main and actually say it in a video but yet they still think you are a Fuji main lol.
People hear what they want to hear. And then some just click on the vid to leave a negative comment without watching at all lol
Pete thanks for a great video and test You are always so objective I agree it got better and this needs to be improved further I love the music and your B&W images All the best for 2025 I will be following you
Hi Pete.Isn't it amazing that any good photographs were produced before AF?
lol
Some people couldn’t survive without eye af 😆
Good photographs are produced by lighting, composition and editing. NOT BY THE CAMERA. But the camera still has to focus.
@@mainmain5303 You've really got massive hard on here haven't you. How is Ben Kanarek managing to create centre page spreads for high end fashion magazines if the cameras are as bad as your unhinged rants here are portraying?
Its ok to criticise something, but you lose all credibiltiy as soon as you enter the realms you have here.
Probably the best comment so far.👍
I can't see the army of people to say they sold all fuji because atofocus this autofocus that, zooming in 500% because that's what photography is about when your overall image sucks. I'm starting to think a lot of them are paid by SoNiCa to spout shit. Who on earth watches a random autofocus firmware update from another system? Why? Makes no sense to me
Some people love to hate on brands especially Fuji lol. Criticism is fine but I don’t get the crazed hate either
@@GerhardBothaWFF there’s a ton of hate to go around that’s true. I don’t hate any brand I think it’s pretty silly.
The sad thing is, many of them aren't actually paid, they do it for free.
All is about compromise. I’ve noticed what you have in terms of the firmware too so that’s a step forward at least
@PeteCocoPhoto yup heading in right direction!
What are you going with instead?
Just get a zve1 or Nikon z6 iii
Fuji's kit is way too expensive for a crop sensor system with the worst AF behind everyone except Olympus. Most of the glass can't resolve the 40mpx either.
I use Fuji since 2016 and ill never used the AF-C on the cameras. Why should i ? Fuji is for me joy of using and unbelievable good colours straight out of camera . Thats it and its everything i need , cheers
Haven’t upgraded from FW 2.10. Wondering if 4.10 is any better? I suspect the answer is no.
Probably not. This is an interesting question. The best answer I can give is if you’re happy with it don’t update lol
@ haha thanks I try not to let them get to me
Thanks for another great video.
Rant over
Thank you! I am with you on this for sure
Offended people offend me...thanks for the video
Me too
In all honesty shooting a video of a band performing is a challenge for any camera, you can’t expect the camera to know which person it should lock on unless you track that person.
Point taken but remember I was specifically testing the af update.
Loads are people are so trigger happy….just take a deep breath and move on….btw I don’t even have a water pistol.
Haha
Sorry to say that those kind of vlog concerning fujifilm autofocus update is the same since 10 years. Please stop saying there’s improvement but still room to get better because it still lack A LOT !!!
Make it simple by comparing with Sony, canon, Nikon or else in the same range of camera then and only then we could appreciate improvement….or not.
Again sorry to be that straight but it’s like a quiz that would say “ what is the difference between a duck ? “ 😂😂
Using fuji for video is like using a chocolate teapot for making tea
😆😆😆 good point
No matter what Fuji does technically, they need to improve on communications! Just try and watch their Stockholm events from 2023 and any other release event… the Japanese/English is horrendous, and they deliver near zero value beyond what the slides in their presentations state
Communication is key and they def need a lot of help there
I appreciate all of this video but I “liked” this video for the jazz bass solo
Yes! I love that haha. The music is definitely much better than the silly video lol
Ignore the sh*t posters. People want you to think that the trouble they are having MUST be true for all cameras. It's not true. They are in a small minority.
So true. And if you have a different experience than them, they call you a liar or shill
Fuji AF is sorta like wanting to meet someone on an online dating app. Looks good online but total sh**show in person. ;)

No…..
Yes…. Or at least maybe??? Lol
Who shoots video with autofocus? Mount it on rods so you can use a matte box and a follow focus.
Tons of people for lots of different reasons
This comment section is why Fuji will probably soon go out of business. And we will lose some great potential stuff forever. Incredibly egotistical. Wow. Incredibly egotistical. Has to, HAS TO, feel good about “my camera”.
All I said in the vid was that it improved. And I said they have a ways to go and it’s still not near my Canon gear. And if it sucks that much it’s time for another brand. It’s that simple.
@ I’m coming from FW 2. It’s vastly worse.
Updated because it specifically promised better AF.
@ Your R5 is 5 times better than this. Probably 10 times.
Hahaha Fuji going out of business soon? Hilarious.

@@fredschmidt8609 I can tell you’re prehistoric.
From my point of view there is only a small improvement on AF-C...otherwise nothing has been improved...Fuji does not care about its users
Yeah that’s why I think it depends on what you shoot for sure. It’s gonna vary
I think you are being utterly rude and should not vent your horrible feelings on Pete Coco’s extremely good channel. setup your own and rant on that.
Ok so clearly you didn't listen to what I said at all. You just wrote this comment after being triggered. I said that these running around vids do have some value, but they are NOT THE SAME as a real-world situation. At this point I'm not sure how people can't understand this.
@@PeteCocoPhotoPete if were to keep using Fuji professionally, Fuji heavy channels needs to trash the faak out of them. No, it’s not acceptable at this point and Fuji deserves a lawsuit against them.

@@PeteCocoPhotoAlso, a real world wedding situation is VASTLY more complicated than a guy walking up and down in the front of a camera in nice light and no distractions.
If it fails there, it is brainless to take it for a complex lighting and composition situation where people are hugging, dancing, greeting and opening champagne bottles. Naah.
