I’m 72 and was taught by my mother to shampoo once a week. If I go longer than 7 or 8 days my scalp begins to itch. When I transitioned from perms to natural I did the Anthony Dickie method. Now I still shampoo once a week and water spritz every other day plus leave in conditioner. Works for this old lady😎 No protective styles just curls . I was never able to style my hair, still can’t

#2 “consistency is not perfection”. That was a whole word 👏🏽 Not just for hair. For life in general.
Also love #4 and #5 … thanks for the great tips Jenn!
My wash day is Sat/Sun. Depending on my mood & energy (giving myself grace). If Saturday won’t do then it’s definitely Sunday.

Once a week on Sunday or Monday. Things opened up for me when I realized I could wash my hair right after ending my workday.

This is common sense information. But the takeaway is not to let your hair care routine get put of too long when life happens. I agree with Jenn and implement everything that she highlights in this video

I am a once a week girl with a two day allowance either way if things pop up, or I have something important like a meeting which means I need my hair fresh and at it's finest. 6 months natural andbi can already see length gains from when I started. I have a solid routine with a few changes depending on the time I have but it is working for me. I wish I'd stopped relaxing my hair sooner. Thanks Jen these are great tips. 💜

Good talk/ tips Jenn. I am currently consistent with monthly washing, conditioning, prepping my hair for protective styling, on my days off the first week of the month. However, sometimes I get stuck with styling decisions and end up wearing head coverings for a week or two. But still moisturize and spritz every 2-3 days. Consistency is important, you're right. We all know this. The struggle to commit is real. Thank you for continuing to encourage us with your level of commitment to your self care routine ❤

My routine of every 5 days got stopped in its tracks in Dec 2022 when my dumb immune system decided that my hair follicles were foreign bodies that needed to be attacked, and I was diagnosed with CCCA. So here I am stuck with a 3-day routine after trying to make it to 4 days quite a few times only to be awakened at 3 or 4 in the morning by an itching burning scalp that was screaming for medicated shampoo immediately! Finally, I gave in so it's 3 days without compromise!🤷‍♀🤣 I suppose I shouldn't complain because I've seen pics of what late-stage CCCA without treatment can do and mine was caught early with a positive response to treatment so I didn't get any bald spots and my shedding has returned to normal.

Consistency to me means, really being serious about washing my hair when it needs it. But there's no timetable because there are so many factors, right? Working out, sweating, winter hats, etc.
But there are things that I do that are consistent:
I apply growth oil to my scalp twice in between washings; I do an additional scalp treatment the day before I wash my hair, I apply an aloe/oil mixture to my hair and scalp once between washings, I do scalp massages twice a day, I do hibiscus/Indian herb mask once a month, I put a heavy oil on my ends once a week, and I do a ACV or tea rinse to keep knots away.
But what I no longer do, is WAIT until my hair is near death before washing. I also no longer do random stuff to my hair and hope for the best. I've decided to be very focused and only use what I know works.

I usually wash my hair on Mondays after work, and it doesn’t take much time at all.
    1. I take down my hair and finger detangle (which takes the most time)
    2. If I decide to detangle with a brush in the shower that takes about 20 minutes (I’m currently working with permanent parts. It’s usually 10 minutes when my hair is in larger sections or loose)
    3. I shampoo in loose twists once or twice depending on how the shampoo lathers the first time around.
    4. I apply a deep conditioner in the shower and put my hair in a bun, I put a plastic bag on when I get out.
    5. I don’t time my deep conditioning step, but I usually rinse my hair when I notice there’s no water dripping from the sides of the plastic cap.
In total it takes an hour and half to two hours to finish.
