I do it for 30 mins max honestly! People wonder what my hair type is when I say this, 4B. I have a head full of hair too. With that said, I'm dying on my clarifying shampoo hill.
😂😂I’m sorry 💀 it’s the fact that this is first comment while I’m overnight deep conditioning. I didn’t plan for it this time though. I was trying to do too much in one day when I should’ve just waited til the next day 🙃😆.
I never have understood that "baby hair" "lay you edges down" bullcrap that people have been trying to do the last 10 years and that's when I start seeing people having issues with not having edges. I've always combed and brushed my edges together with the rest of my hair. I was like what is going on. Putting globs of polymers on the side of their heads. When I was coming up the girls in the family would go thru a stage where we had short hair in the back it was noticably shorter when it wasn't pressed out. We had edged through. Matter a fact our edges was the thickest area of our hair.
I think there’s laid edges and baby hair edges. I prefer laid edges and can get it done with buttery edge controls. The baby hair edges is a special occasion look 😂
Unfortunately my hair does not agree with any of this. I have low/medium density, low porosity fine strands. I also have bouts of seborrheic dermatitis. So I cannot 1. Go without shampoo, 2. No combs because I get spider web roots (my fingers will never ever be enough) 3. Only scoop and spread. That’s actually TOO MUCH manipulation. On my fine strands . Despite not being able to do any of this. My hair is thriving so I say what works for one may not work for others
yes my scalp swells, itches aches and scabs after 2 weeks of no washing i use a special shampoo my doctors gives me with a moisturizing shampoo. I know its from not washing because while im washing and after the scalp pain, scabs and aches are relieved
I usually agree with you, but the shampoo part doesn’t make sense to me. Shampooing is absolutely necessary. Cowashing and shampoo alternatives always leave me with a gunky scalp.
Yes you are right depending on what you put on your scalp. If you use commercial things then yes, you have to use shampoo. I don't have to use it because I only use things that come from nature and even just water washes it away and keeps my scalp clean.
Everybody is different!!! Milk is good for you...UNLESS you have an allergy. There are good nonPOO products on the market that use various ingredients other than sulfate to cleanse the hair. Just like not all faces need deep cleaning, some people prone to acne have a whole different regiment from their doctor requiring various other deep & heavy cleansers. Shampoo makes my hair dry and tangled and leaves me w a dry scalp. Now that I mostly just use gentle non poo cleaners I have less tangles and less dryness.
Not sure about shampooing but everything else I agree with. My wash days look different than before . I use organic stuff to cleanse my scalp. I can’t go more than a week without washing my scalp as it gets irritated and itchy and sores develop. I was against cleansing my hair so often however my hair has grown tremendously keeping my follicles unclogged.
Me same. I finally went to a black dermatologist. I commented above about having seborrheic dermatitis. Getting a prescribed scalp serum from the dermatologist as well as shampooing every week has been instrumental to treating and preventing this inflammation.
@@Brownmahfunin my experience, after going plant based (which I’m not telling anyone to do btw), I noticed a significant difference in my scalp health. I never ever have scalp issues now which tells me the reason I was getting issues in the first place was something to do with what I was eating. I also haven’t used shampoos in 8 weeks (I use clay & shikakai) and my scalp and hair have never felt so amazing - super clean but not stripped at all.
I thought I was crazy when I stopped using combs years ago. I promise for more than 7 years a comb hasn't touched my hair. I'm so glad I have stuck to what works for me and not trends ❤
Anyone concerned about not shampooing frequently: just choose the right shampoo. Use a moisturizing shampoo when u dont need a deep cleanse; 7-10 days. If you need to cleanse more frequently, use a "cowash" or something similar. When you do need one deep cleanse (4-6 wks), use a clarifying shampoo.
@@naturalhairkhronicles5790 I stop using butters. They mess up my hair before and they keep moisture out and make it hard to get hair wet. I had to use a commercial shampoo to wash it out.
@@naturalhairkhronicles5790do you use clays weekly? Doesn’t it have an adverse effect on your hair after a while, I suffer with dandruff so have to use shampoos weekly but they are indeed very stripping and damaging in my opinion
Frequently combing is my unnecessary. Like u said my hair doesn't remain detangled long so, just pulling it out with combing. I comb once a week at wash time to put it back in my twists or braids for the week.
I have seborrheic dermatitis. I didn't know that was the thing causing little scabs on my scalp and intense itching. As a loose natural i felt shampoo was this nightmare and it really was tough on my loose 4c high porosity hair. To be honest it was such a vicious cycle though and it was like running in circles trying to keep my hair from breaking off and trying to solve my scalp misery... It was only after getting locs that i got diagnosed with the seborrheic dermatitis and suddenly SO much changed. I now only exclusively use shampoo, i use clarifying shampoo at least once a week and wash multiple times a week, no conditioner or products except rinses or rose hydrosol.... Now my scalp is so wonderful. No scabs no flakes no itch... and it produces a healthy amount of sebum, and the sebum more easily travels down my hair lengths so overall my hair and scalp are the healthiest they have ever been I truly believe that this routine would have been rough on my loose hair though. I have no idea what the difference is or why, but I'm so glad i found locs. I refer reddit people to your channel in the natural hair forum when they ask questions like how to figure out your porosity... the basics... My hair only got as long and healthy, even with the struggles, as it did when i was a loose natural because of the help and tips and knowledge your channel has been dropping for so long. It's like a video bible for black hair....i still remember my own onion juice experiences fondly and with laughter after watching your video about the benefits. I'm sure you would never get locs but if someone you are close to ever gets them i would love to get your read and research on why so many of us have this radical change in how our hair and scalp behave and what they need once we are locked. I hope you have a wonderful holiday season 💖 Your videos mean more and have helped and changed the lives and perspectives of way more people than you can even realize, and from all over the world. From a Jamaican Canadian fan 🍻💯🍗🥧🎁🎄🫶🏾👏🏾
Shampoo: My scalp won't allow a no shampoo routine. Combs and brushes: my hair is ultra fine and I can't feel all the strands between my fingers. Luckily my hair doesn't retangle easily unless it needs a trim. Elaborate hairstyles: Yes I agree. simple loose styling with very little product is the way to go. My addition- Long wash days: My stylist and my trichologists can do my hair in one hour so why am I taking 8 hours every week to do my hair?
Come through singing Voice and visuals I remember the video on scoop and spread of the natural sebum... My unnecessary is staying away from blow drying.. My hair responds well to heat, I keep it moisturized and no heat damage.. I really believe that finding what works well for your hair, and sticking with it will yield good results🧡
Yeah I’m not nowhere near there yet to go without most of the things listed in this video. I have committed to no tight braids and synthetic hair for braids. I’m not a DIY girlie for hair, body, and face products 🤷🏽♀️ Might I add if your regiment isn’t like this lady in the video, please make sure you’re washing oils, butters, gels, and anything else you might use out of your hair. If you don’t know how to troubleshoot or feel uncomfortable making your own concoction, don’t. It’s okay.
Honestly who has time for all of the diy stuff if their hair is thriving on commercial shampoos and other products. The problem is people will jump on any bandwagon not understanding that not everything said on the internet is gospel and each head of hair has its own needs. There is no universal regime for hair health. The foundation is keeping the scalp clean and keeping the hair moisturized and unstressed. Everything else is give or take.
@@SimplyTamz Just stick with making sure your diy is as close to nature as possible. I make my own hair teas and use Shea butter, cocoa butter and natural oils for saturation.
I stopped shampooing my hair a year ago, and my hair has been flourishing! Since i dont shampoo, nothing is stripped, so no need for conditioner. This was a vey good video😊
Yessssssssss 🙌🏾, I've been waiting for you to talk about ambunu! I use it at times but I've noticed my hair just absolutely loves clay washes more than anything else. I've given up on regular or conventional shampoos years ago. I've tried finger detangling vs comb 🪮 or brush and for me it depends on how wide tooth it is. I do both and perhaps will go back to finger detangling. For the most part I mainly use products I've made or others such as your pH spritz which has been a game changer. I've been taking heed what you've said about elaborate hairstyles and do it on occasions. Thank you for all your hard work and helping us with having a healthy luxurious head of hair 🎉
"Have you ever noticed your hair is never fully detangled after detangling it?" No, I have never noticed that. I like using detangling brushes, they've always worked well for me.
lol. Sometimes I think TH-camrs start making up stuff to keep their content relevant and they mix in good advice with not so good ones. I respect her work…but some of the stuff is for people who have already reached their hair goal and length, not people who are still on that journey.
Green Beauty, you are the real deal and I love your channel. I agree with these things as well, I'm natural so I wear twist, and loose braids always. I'm still learning what works for my hair as well, but it's healthy with far less dryness, breakage, thanks for the info as always
So glad you spoke on shampoo! I've been using a blend of Rhassoul clay with Shikakai, and a bunch of other Ayurvedic powdered herbs, powdered Aloe & Fenugreek, mixed with equal parts water & apple cider vinegar to wash my hair every other week. I mix it into a loose paste, spritz my hair with water, apply the clay-herb mixture scalp to ends, & cover with a plastic cap. I let this sit in my hair for 3 hours at most, but 1 to 1.5 hours is really enough. I pass my head under running water in the shower to loosen the clay-herb mixture, then one side of my head at a time starting on the strands, I gently cleanse my hair from ends to scalp in a sweeping down motion. Lastly, using the leftover mixture near my scalp, I gently cleanse the scalp in a massaging motion, making sure to rinse it all out. Then I move on to conditioner for 10-15 mins. I love the results! My hair & scalp are clean (not stripped), & my curls are extremely defined & "popping"! Literally perfect 4A curls surrounding my head like the suns rays 😄 I love! Lately I find myself using the clay-herb mix more than the shampoo & my hair is obviously loving it! I really do like the "Mielle Organics Pomegranate & honey moisturizing & detangling shampoo", my hair never feels stripped afterwards, but I prefer the end results of the Rhassoul clay & Ayurvedic powdered herbs!
@aligboduruth7922 I've tried using black soap in the past on my skin, face & body, but I simply couldn't get use to it. After a few days my skin always felt raw & burning. Never tried it for my hair as a wash. Honestly, the clay & herbs with ACV are where it's at for me. I think the benefits & results would be better than burnt black soap. To each their own. Black soap may work for other naturals but I'm sticking to my lovely mixture.😊
Based on my hair type, I NEED to deep condition. My hair DOESN'T do well if I wash without condition for at least 1/2 hour. The umteen hours are a no no but I literally have to.
❤❤❤ THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! This video & your other video about ‘Emulsifiers’ has really saved my hair. I’m a 4c girl. So I’m sure I don’t have to explain the struggles I’ve had with my hair over the years. I honestly thought my hair was just prone to being brittle & dry. I tried almost every product on the market but my results were always the same…dry & brittle; hair not even hairdressers understood. But when you explained why not using shampoos & conditioners & products that contain emulsifiers, and to only detangle with your fingers…ma’am. What a game changer. You really saved my world. WHAT I USE I just use African black soap, Shea butter, oils, herbs, & my water mix with vegetable glycerin. MY CONDITIONING METHOD I created my own method to condition my hair since I no longer use conditioners. I condition my hair first then I shampoo it only because it’s easier to wash everything at once. What I do is I make an herbal flaxseed gel and I put it on my hair. I let the flaxseed gel air dry till it’s nice and firm in my hair. Shampoo the oil and dried flaxseed gel out of my hair with the African black soap. CASUAL STYLE My regimen is I keep my hair in crochets. They’re soft and lightweight. While my hair is crocheted I keep it spritzed with my glycerin water mix and lightly oiled. CROCHET TAKE DOWN When it’s time to take my braids down I do not use water. Instead, I use my fingers & oil only. Since I have no products on my hair it doesn’t mat up. Detangling is super easy because I don’t wet the hair first. Instead I leave it dry and I use my fingers and oil to unwind the hair. It not only detangle’s easily but it’s very soft. SHAMPOO I wash my hair once a month. I use African black soap to shampoo my hair. After washing my hair I put oil & vegetable glycerin in it while it’s damp. Then I put my hair back into a casual style as you mentioned. Again for me, a casual style is wearing crochets. As I go through to braid my hair down I add Shea butter and oil to the ends of my hair, which makes it softer smoother and easy to braid. REPEAT While it’s in crochets, I repeat the cycle. ❤❤
I feel your videos are always giving good knowledge about good hair growth & education. Thanks, Sis. Such a jewel. I hope you eventually have a confession session for the strange and off the wall things that we've done to get our hair to grow.. cause, girl! 😅🤣😅🥰
Thanks for this. I’m taking notes and will adjust my routine. I got a silk press in January and my hair hasn’t been as healthy ever since - never ending splits climbing up my strands and tons of lost hair every wash day. I may be over-clarifying and over-detangling.
When I was a loose natural, I rarely used a comb and many products. I would braid my hair in mini braids, use the low porosity shea moisture leave-in and then a serum and leave my hair alone until it was dry which took about 5-7 days. I would wash my hair with shikaikai or no-sulfate shampoo with shikaikai once a month while my hair was in mini braids and would redo the mini braids once every 2 or 3 months. My hair has been waist-length multiple times. I have microlocs. All I use is rose water and I get my hair washed when I go to the loctician every 8 weeks. But when I go swimming in a pool or surfing in a wave pool I have use more products to combat the chlorine. I have vitamin c spray that I make to neutralize chlorine, then I wash my hair with a clarifying shampoo or vitamin c shampoo and then spray my hair with very diluted leave in conditioner. Do you think I can get away with just using my vitamin c mixture and not wash my hair? I really hate washing my hair too often because it does strip the sebum in my hair.
This is the best advice above all the advices on TH-cam. All these top hairdressers giving advice that in practice doesn’t pan out yet just sounds good and is illustrated well. However, to copy the illustrated subject used daily, weekly or even monthly would still result in short hair. I came to this exact conclusion intuitively and it’s working. Some of these so called hairdressers that claim to be proficient in 4C hair are not and don’t have our backs other than their own business flourishing. I’m gonna start calling these TH-cam videos out when they advocate all this wash ‘n’ go rubbish. I noticed even when I deta glue my hair it curls back a little resulting in a little tangle but the hair is still manageable and looks healthy - so we just need to understand all that was said on This particular video and get used to it and gorgeous healthy hair is achievable. We don’t need to be halfway still being pulled towards the eurocentric way all the time. We just need to do our 4C selves because it’s beautiful. Great, solid advice. Thank heavens TH-cam brought me hair! No video says 4C hair like it is better than GreenBeauty. ❤
I agree with you, our hair is ‘uniquely different’ so our approach to make it flourish has to be also ‘uniquely different’. I have been natural for a long time and my hair flourishes the most when I do the opposite of what I’ve learned when the beauty industry was only catered to White Europeans.
I have different textures and patterns on my head which include 4C and I do wash-n-go and it has never made me have issues with my hair. It's all about the technique.
🌟YESSSSSS!!! I Concur!!! This has been my observation over the years also, with waist length 4Cish hair. So grateful for the additional confirmation. Thanks Sis!!!🙏🌟
I actually started to finger detangle and wash my hair into 4 sections because of the breakage I was noticing and I noticed a significant reduction in the amount of breakage I had. Not only that, I really had to sit down with myself and really go back to my roots and what I used to do that had my hair growing because once I started trying to follow the natural hair girlies and incorporate some of their routines in my hair (like washing my hair every week, deep conditioning, and more) and I noticed my hair wasn’t really growing (well retaining length, because it was still growing). So I had to think about the things I did before that kept my retention and that was barely washing my hair, do a protective style and leave it alone for a while and I would only wash my hair like every 3 months or so and that is what kept my length and my hair from breaking off, so that’s what I went back to and I plan to stick to it this time and leave all the extra stuff. And now hearing it makes sense because I was stripping my hair of my natural sebum every week so my hair was not thriving vs when I don’t wash my hair for a while and just leave it alone in a protective style, my hair thrives!!! I have faux locs in my hair right now and they will be left in for about 3 months and I will take them out wash my hair (but I only do one shampoo instead of about 3, as to not completely strip my hair), and do some more faux locs! 🤗 thank you for this video, it was very informative
I have 4B, 4C with some 4A at the back: My list: 1. Constant deep condition for long. (I even use regular conditioner for like 10 mins) 2. Combs (I'm dying on the paddle brush hill, yes that brush you swear is for straight textures, get you one. 3. Oils and butters: Did absolutely nothing for my hair. I actually saw a huge difference cutting these out. My scalp now never flakes like crazy. I have extra low porosity hair and oils and butters just never seemed to wash off. I'd need not only a clarifying shampoo but I'd have to shampoo twice because even clarifying shampoos wouldn't lather when I used oils and butters.
Reducing manipulation by finger detangling is, the truth 🙌🏾 but, always keep in mind that your hair will NEVER be completely detangled. So, be very gentle b/c it’s possible to over finger detangle and damage your hair.
Love your info! But please help.. I have never detected any sebum on my scalp. I know my scalp is dry. My hair is a mix of 4b and 4c, fine, and thinning. I use a comb and fingers to detangle, but do not have much breakage or shedding. My hair has been the same length for years. I usually use oils on my scalp, rather than creams. I live in a dry climate, so I use your spritz daily (pre-ordering soon!) I massage my scalp daily. I shampoo and condition my hair every 10-14 days with a moisturizing shampoo and usually a deep conditioner. How can I increase the amount of sebum I produce?
@Brownmahfun Thanks, but my intake of sugars and starches is low too moderate and I already supplement with omega 3s. How/why does intake of those substances affect sebum production?
Do you drink enough water? For me it usually takes about a month of not washing my hair to see my hair completely coated with sebum. You can try massaging your scalp and try to "scritch and preen" the oil from your scalp to the ends of your hair. I think Green Beauty has video on how to do that.
I probably don't drink enough water, but I do get the equivalent of several glasses a day. I don't get anything when I "scritch and preen". I have seen her video on sebum, but I get nothing when I try to scrape up something... 😕
I agree with you on using combs and detangling brushes. I threw all of mine away and use my fingers. I've experienced lesser shedding. Plus every time I turn around, a new detangling tool is trending like the brush I've seen on Tik Tok.
I KNEW IT, i knew brushing my 4c hair would be useless. After brushing it, its never "brushed". It always looks better poofing it by hand! Now i just finger stretch it like you said, thank you!!
I love ur videos! I use botanical gels with leave in every time I wash my hair. No oils or butters and my 4c hair has been loving it. Not sure whether you’ve heard about the ‘no oil and butter method’? Would love if u do a video on it
Hey I’m so glad to see your videos. You are always informative and honest. My question to you is how often do you cleanse your beautiful strands. I love your products and I’ve seen all your videos several times. Thanks for all your advice 🥰
Thank you. I cleanse my hair an average of once a month but, I’ve gone two month without formally washing my hair. I keep my scalp clean with herbs and by Scooping & Spreading 💚
I've stopped washing my hair loose. I now wash my hair in braids. I couldn't understand why so much of my hair kept coming out when I washed it🤔 I saw a video where the YT-er said that she always washed her hair in twists. I used to do that but, because my hair is short, the twists always came undone. It never occurred to me to braid my hair🙄😬😁 I wouldn't wash my hair loose again💯 I only comb my hair about once or twice a week so, using a comb ain't a big think for me💁🏾♀️🤓🇬🇧
@@flowers1-2-1 You know what sis? I LIKE that idea. I've now noticed a lot of the channels that I see women washing hair in braids/twists seem to have thicker hair. I don't think that's an accident at all. So I'm starting to do that come my next wash day .
I recently went completely bald after discovering a bald spot in the back of my head (It was growing back but I wanted to get to know my scalp better anyways for a long time) after taking my twists down. I've been wanting to go bald for a while now, but this gave me the reassurance that I should. Could you maybe do a video for those of us going through our "reconstruction era"? I'm having a difficult time understanding how I can build a great foundation for my growth later on with so much information, and I want to do things a bit differently this time.
Nice to see you again. The queen of natural hair🎉🎉❤ thank you for being a friend. Love it. I try only to use a comb on wash daysss. I try as much to detangle with my hands because I experience thicker hair when not using a comb..
I aloe Vera definitely does NOT strip sebum from your hair. The potential problem with Aloe Vera is when you use it undiluted. The pH of Aloe Vera is slightly too acidic so, over time if you use often, it will start eating away at your cuticles. Your hair will become very very dry b/c it’s porosity will increase. So it’s very important to dilute Aloe Vera with water before using it on your hair hair. FYI - you don’t have to dilute it when you use it on your skin. Our skin loves that level of acidity.
Since I do not suffer from a out of product build up I can possibly replace some weeks of shampoo with an alternative method, probably clay wash or cowash. I live in a tropical country and I perspire a lot on my head so I have to do weekly washes. I also workout so cleansing is a must for me as my scalp gets itchy
Excellent truthful video! I am Colombian with fine curly hair and although I do brush to distribute natural oils and stimulate the scalp, I never shampoo, and use zero product except for some conditioners including diy ones. Also very rarely heat. 🙂⭐❤🙏🏼
I’m glad your back!!❤ What I think is unnecessary is doing a hair mask and a deep conditioner on was days. My masks includes aruvydic ingredients and oils that serve 1 purpose. I’d love to see your diy video of a mask/deep conditioner recipe.
Excellent video! I COMPLETELY agree with the 3rd caveat. Those tight hair styles absolutely contribute to, if not cause, traction alopecia & hair loss. And they look extremely painful!! My head hurts just looking at those photos! 💯💯. But, shampoo is a must for my scalp, as is using a detangling brush very carefully and only after finger-detangling. I never use combs. For me, the key after shampooing to maintain healthy hair is deep conditioning & then styling with cream/oil. Again, I just love how beautifully diverse we are as a people and how unique our hair care needs are. Knowing what works and sticking with it is key. Tailor-made, not cookie-cutter!🙏🏽❤️💯
I am really trying with to love my natural hair. It’s been a year with no relaxers but I can’t figure out my groove. Everytime I use oils, I get very itchy and sore bumps on my scalp. I love your simple methods and I wish I could do the same. Any tactics for people with sensitive scalp? Your videos are calming to listen to. Thanks in advance.
Stop using oil on your scalp! There's plenty of vids on YT about this issue. Only use oil starting 1 or 2 inches from your scalp. I only use mainly warm castor oil on my scalp and am trying to do that either on wash day or the day after. Also, don't use conditioner on your scalp.
I no longer put oil or butters on my scalp. If my scalp is dry I use a water-based scalp mist such as Eucerin DermoCapillaire Calming Urea Scalp Treatment. If this does not help see a trichologist or dermatologist for a weekly scalp shampoo and a daily scalp mist.
All trials and errors. If recommend stay away from heavy oils and butter of your scalp, your scalp skin on your face you likely wouldn’t be heavy things are your face all week and not expected outbreaks. Try twice to once a week to use a mix of jojoba oil and a little (it’s an essential oil so not a lot) tea oil as a mix and on the scalp. Spend a little time messaging your scalp in it. Also again recommend, being natural is not a one size fits all.
Another awesome video 🙂. I definitely prefer using my fingers to get through my hair. Lot less hair comes out. Doing my hair in sections helps because some sections need more attention than others.
I’m not giving up my shampoo, I’m just not doing it too often. Your scalp is skin too, and if you can shower with soap then you can shampoo your hair. I’m also not giving up my combs, to be fair I only use a tangle teaser. I absolutely love it. It detangles without breaking my hair and all dead strands leave my head. My fingers are not enough to do all that
I completely agree that the shampoo ruins our hair, I stopped using shampoo since July this 2023 and my hair has changed a lot, I lose less hair and it is growing faster. I make my own shampoo with Ayurvedic herbs and it has been fantastic for my hair, I don =t have to use a conditioner if i dont want, as leaving conditioner I am using Ayurvedic oil that I prepared and my hair has never been as they are now. Not sure how I did not start doing that before. I dont think i will be using shampoos again, I also removed all products with silicones, parabens and synthetic products, I prepare my own natural rinse with herbs as well. For the combs and brushes i do still use them, as I lightly stretch my hair a little bot when I wash them
I don’t use combs or brushes either and haven’t since 2017. *EXCEPT* when blow drying and on my straightened hair. However, blow drying and straightening my hair is rare; I haven’t done it since February 2020. I plan to straighten it at least once this year though. Every blue moon I’ll use a comb to part my hair, but that’s rare too.
Awww I used to love watching the Golden Girls 😂 I LOVE THIS ! I’m a DIYer and I too want to get away from emulsifiers and commercial products. And I have very very thick and dense hair as well. You look beautiful and your hair is gorgeous! I’m going through your channel and trying your tips. ❤❤❤❤❤ Merry Christmas! 🎁🎄 🎊 P.S. I have not used conventional shampoos in over 10 years and I don’t regret one bit. In fact, it’s helped me to retain nearly thigh length hair.
I only use shampoos if I’m going to straighten my hair. Every now and then I will use them to cleanse my scalp. But as a routine I only use conditioning cleansers on my scalp *and* strands and they do the job. My favorites are Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus and TGIN.
I finally stopped oiling my scalp all together….the itching stopped.never in a million years did I think that was the culprit…but it was. Try it for a month….you’ll see
Sometimes when you put your scalp thru so much turmoil for so long it will rebel. It may get worse before it gets better but I would start (If you are not allergic) with aloe vera gel mixed with quality johoba oil and lightly put on my scalp and hair. Castor oil is a no,no, it clogs the scalp.
For me, less is more. I rarely use moisturizing products anymore. They irritate my scalp. I keep my hair short, so not a lot of need for styling products. We’re all different, and we need to find out what works for us. Also, what works for me seems to change every few years.
I agree with you on the everyday snatched hairstyles but baby baby baby when you say this folks get irate and the name calling begins. They swear that tight hairstyles all the time do nothing to their hair. Check them 3-5 years later, edges are GONE! The edges don't grow back and then they begin to hide it by glueing tracks to their bear scalp. YIKES! And they will say nope, it was not the tight hairstyles. I have so many friends who are bald now but if you would have seen them years ago you would be shocked.
For me shampooing is a must. When it comes to combing, I comb and/or brush every two or three days. When I do, I don't lose much hair. I think hairloss depends on how to take care or lack of care you give your hair. Or even if you are taking care of your hair, maybe the product you ise is maybe not suitable for your hair
Great video, thank you. What do you think about using authentic Black African soap as shampoo? Also, I've recently been adding cetearyl-alcohol-beads to my Shea butter hair pomade and I've notices my hair gets greasier faster - so I may eliminate it from my next batch.
I use a shampoo once in three months. But I wash my hair every two weeks with herbal black soap. It doesn't strip my hair but cleanses it. Currently at midback length and it's been 2 years+ 🦋 there are other substitutes for shampoos so I agree with her. I use brushes 2 times in a year😂( after every six months) and I usually make mini braids and twists with my hair. 😌And so far I'm loving this regimen because my hair is thriving( wasn't even touching my shoulders as of 2022 telling you the honest truth! y'all growing hair is so easy🥰 , consistency and gentleness is KEY. Don't waste your money!)
I just can't get the hang of finger detangling. I only use a comb on wash day once a week. I feel like if I give them up altogether I am scared I will have a bunch of free forms all over my head. Any tips, tricks, and hacks greatly appreciated.
I am guilty of not shampooing enough and deep conditioning my hair and I need to get with the program because at the age of 60 any damage could be reversable. Thanks for sharing and Merry Christmas and a Happy new year to you and all.
Brushes that detangle (the rubbery ones) are definitely necessary for protective styles like twist and braids, they help prevent knotting during take downs. I agree with combs, shampoo is a once a month thing. And over the top hair styles. I also think the over use of product is unnecessary. I use oils as 'dog treats' for my hair. But mostly just a leave in conditioner
You should follow the directions of you trichologists and dermatologists if you have a scalp condition. I have a dry sensitive allergic reactive scalp, I follow my trichologists' recommendations which do not include cleansing my scalp daily.
I shampoo about every 5 weeks. I use a diy formula out of black soap and aloe juice. In between I cleanse hair with warm water and a rinse made from coffee, fenugreek, and cloves. Sometimes I use a rose water rinse.
Well done video as always ❤. You mentioned at 5:35 that the itching sensation is a sign of follicle irritation. Is it true that it will lead to follicle death. And how can I treat my itchy scalp that occurs within hours of washing? Thanks!
You may want to use things from nature to help heal your scalp and if you do you wont have to use shampoo, water and/or vinegar would clean your hair and scalp. So your scalp can heal. Just make sure you are not allergic or have a sensitivity to anything natural in the future or what you are using now.
I use a scalp mist such as Eucerin DermoCapillaire Calming Urea Scalp Treatment. I put it in a spray bottle. I also use a specific scalp shampoo from my trichologists. what type of scalp cleanser are you using? I also do not put anything else directly on my scalp such as oils, butters or conditioners.
Yeah, I'm not ready to give up my shampoo yet. I tried the clay and herbs only for months and my scalp wasn't having it. I suspect water quality has something to do with the lack of success. I'm in a very hard water area and on city water so it's laced with chemicals. Shower filters only filter a few substances.
How can we get the real protein treatment and ph stabilizer when not in the us? I really love your content i think i was lucky enough to gind this channel when I first started my natural journey🙏

Hiiii~~~~~~questions from an Afro Latina girl @greenbeauty So... if I want to ´restart´my hair regimen, would recommend I do one last cleansing shampoo and then start with scooping and spreading my sebum?
Sis I may not have understood the science but I could tell my hair wasn't following the trends i was seeing. Like shampooing everyday, combing it, using products rich in coconut oil and olive oil, or oiling my scalp. Im so glad i just stuck to what worked for me😊 and im glad to see these videos confirm my suspicions
@lunamufon Actually Anthony Dickey here on TH-cam said " IF we were wash & go's we should wash our hair everyday but with no Sud shampoo "....So co-washing
All of the things that you've mentioned have been part of my hair care routine for the past 10+ years. I've found my stride and now I don't even bother with rinse out conditioners. I should also add that as much as I love finger detangling, I don't think that it works well on all lengths of hair. I've found that it's really tricky to do on hair that's between ear and shoulder length. Or maybe I'm just not that good at it.
My unnecessary is deep conditioning for hours on end.
I can’t believe I missed this one. That should be number one
I do it for 30 mins max honestly! People wonder what my hair type is when I say this, 4B. I have a head full of hair too. With that said, I'm dying on my clarifying shampoo hill.
OMGGGG! The natural hair gurus had me deep conditioning overnight 😂! I leave a DC on 30 minutes MAX these days!
Good for you. First step is admitting. 😊
😂😂I’m sorry 💀 it’s the fact that this is first comment while I’m overnight deep conditioning. I didn’t plan for it this time though. I was trying to do too much in one day when I should’ve just waited til the next day 🙃😆.
Laid edges are unnecessary. I know it's an aesthetic, but we can do without it for the health of our hair.
Totally agree. My edges have never been able to lie down so I don't waste time trying to do that.
3 years without laying edges
Yh absolutely unnecessary
Yeah, folks with seborrheic dermatitis can't do this. Definitely need to follow the recommendations of your dermatologist/medical provider.
take multi vitamins, omega-3s, vitamin D, and avoid dairy to combat the dermatitis. I did this and got rid of it. No more flare ups.
Good you're observing your hair well. Keep it up!!!
Fellow seborric dermatitis haver here! Just here to say I feel you lol, hearing no shampoo almost made my eyes bulge out 🤣🤣💀
yes my scalp swells, itches aches and scabs after 2 weeks of no washing i use a special shampoo my doctors gives me with a moisturizing shampoo.
💯 if anything, people don’t shampoo enough tbh. My scalp gets sooo itchy it’s crazy, especially if you sweat often or have dandruff

Nasty 😢
Scalp is skin and we use soaps (surfactants) to cleanse our body so why is the scalp different?
I’m not giving up my combs or brushes. I don’t loose a lot of hair when detangling & I love my regimen for my hair type.
Same. I combine finger detangling with brushes. Much faster than finger detangling alone.
Who said you Had to give them up?

Constant trims are not necessary. Im finally starting to realize that
Not sure about shampooing but everything else I agree with. My wash days look different than before . I use organic stuff to cleanse my scalp. I can’t go more than a week without washing my scalp as it gets irritated and itchy and sores develop. I was against cleansing my hair so often however my hair has grown tremendously keeping my follicles unclogged.
Omg my scalp also gets irritated after just three days after washing. I also develop bumps on my scalp,
Me same. I finally went to a black dermatologist. I commented above about having seborrheic dermatitis. Getting a prescribed scalp serum from the dermatologist as well as shampooing every week has been instrumental to treating and preventing this inflammation.
That means you may be developing seborrheic dermatitis. It comes from things you eat and things you put on your scalp.
@@teenytineswhat’s your clay and shikaikai recipe? I have Serb derm and I want to move away from commercial shampoos, too stripping
I’m slowly mastering the art of finger detangling and slowly giving up on combs and brushes. Thanks for this great information once again ❤
You are so welcome! 💚
I thought I was crazy when I stopped using combs years ago. I promise for more than 7 years a comb hasn't touched my hair. I'm so glad I have stuck to what works for me and not trends ❤
Is there ACV shampoo rinse sold in stores that u can recommended?
Anyone concerned about not shampooing frequently: just choose the right shampoo. Use a moisturizing shampoo when u dont need a deep cleanse; 7-10 days. If you need to cleanse more frequently, use a "cowash" or something similar. When you do need one deep cleanse (4-6 wks), use a clarifying shampoo.
I haven't use commercial shampoo in years. I use clay on my hair and I deep condition with my herbal sheabutter .

So glad that she said it! Too many stylists have been preaching the harsh shampoo thing and then our hair looks like tumble weed.
Frequently combing is my unnecessary. Like u said my hair doesn't remain detangled long so, just pulling it out with combing. I comb once a week at wash time to put it back in my twists or braids for the week.
Same. Once a week for me.
I also only comb once a week. Finger detangling doesn't get all the shed hair for me, so I will stick to me combs.
No scabs no flakes no itch... and it produces a healthy amount of sebum, and the sebum more easily travels down my hair lengths so overall my hair and scalp are the healthiest they have ever been
I truly believe that this routine would have been rough on my loose hair though.

Deep conditioning for hours. And tight, neat, shiny forehead hairstyles.
Yes 🙌🏾
Not shiny forehead styles lol
yeah them type of hairstyles gon make your hair say bye bye , with all the tension 😂
I agree 💚
Yeah I’m not nowhere near there yet to go without most of the things listed in this video. I have committed to no tight braids and synthetic hair for braids.
I’m not a DIY girlie for hair, body, and face products 🤷🏽♀️
Might I add if your regiment isn’t like this lady in the video, please make sure you’re washing oils, butters, gels, and anything else you might use out of your hair.
@@Tahiha I 💯 % agree with you. DIY hair products can be dangerous if you do not know what you are doing. A healthy scalp and hair retention is key.

Ha I love golden girls !!! I watched them just this week!! Heyyyy❤❤ great video as usual !! And sooo true !!
"Have you ever noticed your hair is never fully detangled after detangling it?"
No, I have never noticed that.
Uh … mine never fully is unless it’s flat ironed with the chase method. But then, imo, that defeats the purpose of wearing it natural.
My hair is never fully detangled but without combs and brushes I might as well lock my hair.
@@sillahthandi7237 Same!
Oh my goodness yessss!!! I have to detangle at every step and it's like what the hell????!!!
If I wash my hair without shampoo, it doesn’t accept deep conditioner as much as when I wash with shampoo, my scalp also itch and smells
Green Beauty, you are the real deal and I love your channel. I agree with these things as well, I'm natural so I wear twist, and loose braids always. I'm still learning what works for my hair as well, but it's healthy with far less dryness, breakage, thanks for the info as always
Great video GB. I always enjoy your natural approach to healthy growing hair.
I love this
Clay is better than shampoo
What about African black soap??
@aligboduruth7922 I've tried using black soap in the past on my skin, face & body, but I simply couldn't get use to it. After a few days my skin always felt raw & burning. Never tried it for my hair as a wash. Honestly, the clay & herbs with ACV are where it's at for me. I think the benefits & results would be better than burnt black soap. To each their own. Black soap may work for other naturals but I'm sticking to my lovely mixture.😊
I may give this a try.
Thanks for sharing.
WHAT I USE
I just use African black soap, Shea butter, oils, herbs, & my water mix with vegetable glycerin.
MY CONDITIONING METHOD
I created my own method to condition my hair since I no longer use conditioners.
CASUAL STYLE
My regimen is I keep my hair in crochets. They’re soft and lightweight. While my hair is crocheted I keep it spritzed with my glycerin water mix and lightly oiled.
CROCHET TAKE DOWN
When it’s time to take my braids down I do not use water.
SHAMPOO
I wash my hair once a month.
REPEAT
While it’s in crochets, I repeat the cycle. ❤❤
I feel your videos are always giving good knowledge about good hair growth & education. Thanks, Sis. Such a jewel. I hope you eventually have a confession session for the strange and off the wall things that we've done to get our hair to grow.. cause, girl! 😅🤣😅🥰
Always trying to change up my eveyday style. That's why its your everyday style. That's my unnecessary.
Hi!!! I just ordered some items that will be shipped on the 30th. I’ve used them before and they are great. Thanks for everything you do!!!!!
You’re a naturalista after my own heart! 🌸
Hi green beauty please is it possible to do a tutorial on how you do your twists without protective styles. Thank you and kind regards.
Thank you so much for this video! What kind of clip are you using to hold your hair?
It’s called a PuffCuff
I wash my hair every week but on a rotation. First week- shampoo. Second week- cowash. I finger detangle before using a comb only once a week.
Shampooing is necessary for my hair
Do you have hard water?
I have been considering just finger detangling and no longer using combs- you have convinced me to try that! I hope I retain more length as a result 😊
Reducing manipulation by finger detangling is, the truth 🙌🏾 but, always keep in mind that your hair will NEVER be completely detangled. So, be very gentle b/c it’s possible to over finger detangle and damage your hair.
@@GreenBeauty thank you so much for your advice! I shall keep that in mind 😊🙏🏾
It takes farrr too long though
Hey friend. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge, reminders, and encouragement throughout the years. Happy Holidays!!
Cut down on sugar and starches and take ''cod liver oil''. You need more omega 3's.
same I don't think I produce sebum
❤thanks so much sis 💓 I've missed you happy new year prosperity health and family love ❤️

Yeah, I'm one of the people that constant sectioning/ twisting wet hair and attempts to detangle wet hair just pulls it all from my scalp in clumps.
Pls does aloe vera strip off sebum from our hair?.🤷🏾♀️
I aloe Vera definitely does NOT strip sebum from your hair. The potential problem with Aloe Vera is when you use it undiluted. The pH of Aloe Vera is slightly too acidic so, over time if you use often, it will start eating away at your cuticles. Your hair will become very very dry b/c it’s porosity will increase. So it’s very important to dilute Aloe Vera with water before using it on your hair hair. FYI - you don’t have to dilute it when you use it on your skin. Our skin loves that level of acidity.
@@GreenBeauty thank you 🙏🏽 so much for your prompt reply.
You always give information that is golden in your videos. Keep up the good work
Thank you 💚💚
Since I do not suffer from a out of product build up I can possibly replace some weeks of shampoo with an alternative method, probably clay wash or cowash. I live in a tropical country and I perspire a lot on my head so I have to do weekly washes. I also workout so cleansing is a must for me as my scalp gets itchy
How can I get order your hair products?
Excellent truthful video! I am Colombian with fine curly hair and although I do brush to distribute natural oils and stimulate the scalp, I never shampoo, and use zero product except for some conditioners including diy ones. Also very rarely heat. 🙂⭐❤🙏🏼
I’m glad your back!!❤
What I think is unnecessary is doing a hair mask and a deep conditioner on was days. My masks includes aruvydic ingredients and oils that serve 1 purpose. I’d love to see your diy video of a mask/deep conditioner recipe.
How do you get the shedded hair out?
By Scooping and spreading.
I was told to use clarifying shampoo. I’m switching to African black soap to see if that does anything for me
I am really trying with to love my natural hair.
Great to see you!! Miss your videos! Thanks for information!!
My fingers are not enough to do all that
I’m singing along! Thank you for being a frieeeeeeeeeeeend! 😂
For the combs and brushes i do still use them, as I lightly stretch my hair a little bot when I wash them
Learning that the spritz and oil works good for me.
I missed your videos Nikki.
You've helped me a lot.
Please can we get crochet hair styles done. Is it safe?
P.S. I have not used conventional shampoos in over 10 years and I don’t regret one bit. In fact, it’s helped me to retain nearly thigh length hair.
That use to be one of my favorite shows ☺️ and you are beautiful too 💚💚💚
I only use shampoos if I’m going to straighten my hair. Every now and then I will use them to cleanse my scalp. But as a routine I only use conditioning cleansers on my scalp *and* strands and they do the job. My favorites are Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus and TGIN.
how does one deal with an inflammed scalp...does castor oil help?
Ur scalp is screaming and you think suffocating it with a very oil will help? Go see a dermatologist
Try using African black soap to cleanse your scalp, then Try organic castor oil.
I finally stopped oiling my scalp all together….the itching stopped.never in a million years did I think that was the culprit…but it was. Try it for a month….you’ll see
@@arewahaircaretv8718 i did and it hasnt helped much
Sometimes when you put your scalp thru so much turmoil for so long it will rebel. It may get worse before it gets better but I would start (If you are not allergic) with aloe vera gel mixed with quality johoba oil and lightly put on my scalp and hair. Castor oil is a no,no, it clogs the scalp.
I want to thank you my sister you help me grow my hair back your tips and your education on our hair is wonderful thank you again
Wow...I believe that we have to change the way we present ourselves to the world as black women, that will solve most of our problems/issues...TFS
God bless you, I don't have time for a hair lab.
I do appreciate the information.
❤Will heat from the blow-dryer damage natural hair follicles??
Great video, thank you. What do you think about using authentic Black African soap as shampoo? Also, I've recently been adding cetearyl-alcohol-beads to my Shea butter hair pomade and I've notices my hair gets greasier faster - so I may eliminate it from my next batch.
😮 I use black African soap to wash my hair too, considering that was all that was available to my grandmother I see why not 😅
Lol not the golden girls theme song
Also this is still my fav and imo best hair channel on TH-cam. Thank you
I use a shampoo once in three months.
But if you have a scalp condition like ccca or psoriasis… you should wash daily. Correct?
You should follow the directions of you trichologists and dermatologists if you have a scalp condition. I have a dry sensitive allergic reactive scalp, I follow my trichologists' recommendations which do not include cleansing my scalp daily.
Thankful, for your advice as always, this put we back in line, with doing my clays
@@marleyhill34I use Vanicream free and clear shampoo, but I just requested an appointment with a dermatologist
I know first-hand how difficult it is to break away from frequent shampoo usage when started. Had a rough few years figuring out what the issue was.
Not me pausing the video at the hairstyle section to see what cute style i'd like to try. 😫I'm hard headed.
They were cute weren't they!? As long as you don't get them done tightly, there should be no issue. 👍🏼
Thank you for the invaluable information you always provide in your videos. Keep up the good work.
I ordered your protein in treatment in November and cant wait to try it but am yet to recieve my order. Kindly help. Thank you
Please send an email to support@greenbeauty.com make sure to include your order number. Your order issues will be resolved 💚
Thank you for your prompt response. I have sent the email.
You know darn well ain't no black person said to wash your hair daily...😅😅
The lies, the lies I'm telling you 😂😅
@lunamufon Right I was like who out here black and shampooing everyday?👀🤨
@lunamufon Actually Anthony Dickey here on TH-cam said " IF we were wash & go's we should wash our hair everyday but with no Sud shampoo "....So co-washing
@@rdejlee9288Who’s he? Now I have to see who’s talking nonsense. Lol
Very interesting. I like these suggestions. ❤
I like your Content and Style. Thank You💜😻
