  • HEY GIRL HEY!
Today we are discussing our "favourite style" of all times: the infamous Wash and Go. I hope you can hear the sarcasm as I type this but I have grown to learn how to do a wash and go and most importantly how to care for my hair in the process. Many women with tight curls are wearing wash and goes on the regular, myself included and I think its about time we give this style a chance because of how simple it can be. No breakage and no split ends over here!
Have you tried or would you try a wash and go? Let me know below.

Once you learn how to do it it's the easiest thing ever. It's all about your technique. And you are 100% correct about stretching your hair, that's over manipulation if you do it on a consistent basis. Just embrace the shrinkage continue to do your wash and go and your hair will grow! Then you won't have to be concerned about shrinkage, lol but shrink is shows that your hair is healthy, that it has that snapback that we all love to see 🤗🤗🤗

The advice about single strand knots makes me feel disheartened because I’ve done everything I can to prevent them. Trims every 2-3 months, deep conditioning, consistent washing, gentle detangling and styling. I’m incredibly on top of my hair game and yet I still get them. It's true that with wash-n-go styling, technique and consistency are everything. I've been doing wash-n-go and using botanical gel since 2008. Although I've read and seen many times about the trouble people had with tangles and SSKs I never had that problem so I kept doing wash-n-go styling most of the time. Length retention hasn't been an issue either. My hair is tailbone length, and yes it has shrinkage but I just let it do what it wants and I don't try to stretch it so when it drys it's only bra strap length.

@@wanjafaith I usually do my WNGs every 5 days. In Dec 2022 I was diagnosed with CCCA so now I shampoo twice a week. No I don't moisturize between wash days. I just put on a loc soc or a pocket bonnet at night and fluff my coils out in the morning. I'd say around 5% of the time I'll wear crown braids, a bun, or a twisted updo. However, I've never worn a protective style that I keep in for several weeks.

My issue is that mine NEVER LASTED more than 3 days. I used all the right techniques, all the right products, got beautiful results and sat under the hooded dryer. 2-3 days later my hair needed to be redone. I was EXHAUSTED. I’m a mom of two little ones, definitely don’t have time for that, so I’m back to doing braids for 8 week stretches. Wearing my hair out for a month and redoing my braids or twists after. I do cleanse really well though and deep condition and have seen a lot of growth so I’m happy! Thanks for the video Jenn 😊❤

Then your issue may be where you live. If you live in a humid climate, then chances are your styles won’t last that long.. trust me, I know. Sometimes my styles don’t last 2 days (and the worst only lasted one day) I live in the tropics. So my styles never last as long as these TH-camrs who likely live in drier climates. Hi Jenn, I just wanna say single strand knots are different from split ends. In fact, I kind of think they protect our hair from split ends. I agree with a lot of women in the comments. I tend to go between wash and go’s, braid outs, and braid and curls. I think people get breakage because they try to make a wash and go last 7+ days, instead of refreshing every 4-5 days. I think with natural hair, there will always be single strand knots. I tend to shingle whenever I do wash and go’s, and whenever I feel a knot on a strand I just snip it. I think they key to having a good wash and go without breakage is having a good leave in, a good gel to form a nice cast (and a protective layer for the curls to last longer) and well as a good way to put hair up before bed. I don’t stretch with a blow dryer, but I do band my hair at night and that stretches the curls nicely. Sometimes I put a little oil on my hands and just do two single plaits and twist the very ends, and that gives me a good 3-5 days before I refresh again. A wash and go can be refreshed. We can’t be afraid to re-moisturize and re-wet, and apply more product as needed. It’s a learning process but worth it 💕

My wash and gos last 2 weeks with a lot of definition and I rarely get single strand knots. My hair is now armpit length and I trim/cut my hair every 3 months. I've been natural for almost a decade but still chose to have my hair professionally done. Unfortunately, I've never been able to successfully do my hair whether relaxed or natural.
At the height of the pandemic when hair salons were closed, I struggled with doing my 4C shoulder-length hair, and knots were the biggest problem. When the hair salon reopened my hair was so damaged that my stylist recommended the big chop.
My hair eventually grew back, but wasn't as healthy and strong due to multiple prescription medications I had to take after being diagnosed with a serious but non-life-threatening illness.
Jenn, your video has inspired me to wash my hair between my bi-weekly salon visits. I'm overdue for a trim and will ask my stylist to create a schedule for routine trims. Also, I recently started taking a supplement by Nature's Way, 2 pink gummies, Monday thru Friday.

when I had below bra strap length hair, I used to always wear my hair in a wash n go. I was mainly a wash-and-go or puff kind of girl because I'm not good at styling. it's kind of disingenuous to say that highly textured coily hair won't tangle or knot up at all in it's most shrunken state though. You can definitely minimize it to an extent but they won't completely get rid of them. Also ssks are not a symptom of dryness. They're a symptom of the coil, coiling up on other. This can be mitigated by certain ingredients like silicones or oils. This is the first time I've ever heard that people thought wash n goes break hair or that they make their hair dry. I also don't think most naturals think oils hydrate. especially since most always have their trusty water ina spray bottle

I’d like to see your washing go over the course of the week to get more specific tips on how to care for the Wash N Go.

I love wash and go's, but it's too dry (and cold! I air dry) where I am in the winter to wear them constantly.

You are so right because you do have to have a technique on how to and a lot of water

It's a beautiful hairstyle but it's not for everyone. No matter what I do, it breaks my hair mercilessly

    Hi Jenn,
Thank you for this info. I have kinky, coily, my cuticle surface is extremely brittle only when dry….what is your surface texture after it dries and how often do you wash it?

I have a rough surface texture and I was weekly on average.

I have 4c/4b/4a(?) hair but I actually can't pull off a wash and go because my hair at the back does not shrink as much as the hair in front. It's the same length but the back looks so much longer. So when I have tried wash and go's, it just looks like a really bad mullet.

Don't like it for my fine hair and will never like it. To each their own.

The ones that hate shrinkage want pretty curls. 👀What? How? You just can’t. If you want pretty curls and longer hair just let your curls be. A der lol!
