I have always thought that the Metal Gear games have always been trying to tell us what was about to happen in the future. But they also tell us what happened in the past in a way the government would have never wanted us to know. It's one of those narratives that exist in the real world that confirms for me how corrupt the world leaders were and still are. To be honest, I am quite surprised that these games were allowed to be released because of how much the real world story is so close to what actually happened, well, in terms of the cut scenes. It is everything that the governments would have never told us. I see this in other games as well, such as the Assassin's Creed series. There are a lot of things in those games that hit home about real-world history that you would have never been told or made aware about by real-world governments. That's what I love the most about the Metal Gear series and Assassin's Creed Series as they literally try to warn you about real-world events.
Just so you know, they have a nine part series explaining every single game in the timeline. It came out a few years ago. It’s awesome. You should check it out.
Twin Snakes was awesome, and definitely doesn’t get the appreciation it should. I had a roommate in college who didn’t really play games, but he saw me play Twin Snakes and decided that he wanted to give it a go. We spent weeks going back and forth doing our respective playthroughs, and he was blown away by the game and story. I thought it was cool how it was just as good to a long-time MGS fan like me, but also someone new to the franchise like him.
MGS3 is one of my favorite games of all time. I have so many fond memories of it playing with my brother and discussing the plot and characters, replaying cutscenes to see the cool ones, and finding secrets. I really hope the remake is respectable of the original. Thanks Gamespot for this!

Portable Ops is semi-canon. Geoff Keighley: ”Is Portable ops canon?” Kojima: ”It’s is quite difficult question. If we talk about little details, it deviates from the Metal Gear Saga. How should I put this? Regarding the overall story it is part of the saga, but regarding little details it is a little off from the main story.”
Basically stuff like recruiting Eva and Ocelot in the game. Gray Fox/Null I think might have been one of those details too but MGSV also retconned MG2 since Big Boss was in a coma when he was meant to meet Frank in Vietnam.
Every Metal Gear Solid game has small details that deviate from the saga because in the sequels they have been retconned or left broken. So, OPS is not an exception and actually it's basically on the same status of any other MGS game. To be specific, the details of OPS that have been contradicted so far are just a couple of minor things that don't effect the story or the series at all. Edit: leaving aside special quests like recruiting Eva and Ocelot, for those it's clear that are just meant to extend the longevity of the game(in fact, you can't even get them in the first run). The characters from MGS3 that you can recruit and that are canon in the story, are just two, Paramedic and Sigint.
"Although the character in the trailer looked the the Snake they knew and loved, fans would later learn that they were instead witnessing the birth of the legendary Big Boss" Thank you for putting this in proper context! People seem to have forgotten this was kind of a twist reveal.
Luckily I had a PS to get that first play memory burned into my mind. But I bought a PS3 just to play MGS4. And I just bought a gamecube to play Twin Snakes. They are all still so great.
I think this is the first video I have seen including Portable Ops and not calling it non-canon. To those people saying it is not canon because Kojima said so... Until they release a version of MGS4 not having Portable Ops gameplay/cinematics in it I really couldn't care less.
