I read the book as a child. It is absolutely full of horror scenes... Mrs. Hare dying in a pool of her blood and snow comes to mind. It also was very religious. Man is treated by some animals in the forest as a god, but in reality, he's just another animal. Discovering that is what brings Bambi to true enlightenment. They were going to include Bambi discovering Man's body in the fire as well, but that storyboard got cut much faster than the mom's body. You can find drawings of the hunter's arm online if you look.
From what I understand from this video is that nature does not discriminate or judge. It evolves and adapts and it will not care if you fall behind as an individual or as a species. If you fail, you die, if you grow and adapt you'll gain the benefits of what nature has rewarded you.

As tragic as it is, I fear the rumors of turning Bambi into a horror movie may be true. First they did it to Winnie the Pooh, and now to Bambi, maybe even to Peter Pan. What is this world coming to?
TBF, Peter Pan has a lot of elements that would make a horror movie ala "Pan's Labyrinth."
