This is why it's important to diagnose all the steps before just assuming it's a carburetor. Too many people just jump to that because it's the easiest and to be fair most common issue, but in times like this, this was more complicated.😊
Wonderful diagnosis. I have a Troy Bilt XP with this engine. These are excellent engines. I didn’t let my valves get out of whack that much but I did do a valve adjustment on it and it helped it start better when it was hot. Not long after I bought my mower. I hit something and sheared the flywheel key. This was before I started working on small engines so I gave a guy I work with $20 to take it home and replace it. He is a small engine mechanic. I’ve had the mower for over 12 years and it’s a good machine. It doesn’t burn a drop of oil and Burns very clean.
Yes, a solid engine made in 2010 & 2011 & used on many platforms & brands including John Deere & Snapper walk-behinds, both of which were actually made by Briggs/Murray. I have a Deere JS46 that has the 8.75 torque version which puts in the power category of the Honda GCV190. For some reason, Briggs included a screw-on oil filter on the 8.75 even though it is a splash lube system. To this day, I still don't know why a filter was included except perhaps to make it seem more high end & thus justify a steeper price. Notice that the 7.75 version in HG's video has no filter,
Great diagnosis and repair! A new cable and it’ll be ready for prime time. Too bad we’re in the middle of a drought here, can’t even give away a lawn mower right now.
You must be in the southeastern United States. I haven’t mowed my yard in two weeks and will not mow it if I can help it until we get some rain. That’s the worst thing people can do right now is mow, especially when they cut it so short.
Thank you for these great videos. 2 years ago I came upon one of your videos and been working on lawn mowers since and always been able to get them started and sold for profit. But recently I’ve gotten a snapper with one of these engines and I’ve done so many diagnostics and cannot get this thing to start. I’ve checked for fuel, brand new carb, clean gas tank and fuel is flowing into carb. Also made sure idle spring is set correctly. Check for spark and it does have spark. Even put new spark plug for shits and giggles. Check compression, reading 140-145 psi. Fly wheel key is in position and not sheared, also shaft is not bent. Engine has correct amount of fresh 10w-30. Also set the valves to .005 both exhaust and intake. This mower got me scratching my head, what else should I check for before I open this engine completely up. Thank you! You’re videos are the best
You did right in fixing the key and adjusting the valve lash. Brake cable and bail are worth fixing so that the next owner has a few years of use out of it before needing service. i would just increase the price to reflect the amount of parts and time spent on making it run properly. I as a customer would appreciate that!
I have this exact mower-mine is literally identical to this one, down to the paint color scheme-and it's been a great mower. Got it many moons ago at an end-of-season clearance sale at Lowes. Thank you for this video; it helps me understand how to care for my mower all the more. A big thumbs up here from Ohio. Regards, Ron
I never had that problem since all mine were flatheads, BUT if it ran, i'd roll it over to T.D.C. and give it a yank. That usually does it. Good fix on the key. Old pal had a wood splitter that would let the hydraulic pump kill the motor and shear the key. I'd put a key in it and use the splitter. Had about an 8 horse flathead on it. Split good. Happy Weekend to yall!
Btw love your vids and I am 12 and I know all about weedeaters and all that stuff and I could tell you anything about a carb or something and I made a few videos on working on stuff but I quit because I don’t have enough time
To answer your question, now that I know how to fix the issue, no I wouldn’t. This actually happened to me a couple weeks ago when I brought home a mower I got on a trade. Pulled the rope and it snapped out of my hand. It tickled a little bit.
If the pull rope is getting pulled out of my hand... you know... flywheel keys are cheap. I'd have replaced it. Wow! An OHV Briggs with a metal carb? I didn't know that that was a possibility.
I have a yard machine with 38" deck and a large spring came off and don't know where it was on deck and i have tired all types of sites but no help so I'm hoping you can help me out. Thank you
I can definitely help, but I'll need to know which model it is. Find the sticker that has the model and serial number on it and tell me what it is. that way I can find the diagram of your mower and the deck. thanks
Hey I have a lawn mower like this engine and wen I started it warm it started fine but made a loud pop sound it didn’t kick back it started fine like it didn’t even make the pop and with one of my other mowers wen I tried to start it it back fired loud and I seen a flame come out. I have mowers that want to kill me lol😅😂
No won't use anything that rips t handle out of your grasp That's ALWAYS been a telltale sign that the engine is having a mechanical bind and needs attention such as valve adjustment at the minimum. But nice mower here it's a CRUISER
Had a horizontal shaft Honda engine on a 200 gallon sprayer in a van at work back lash and when it ripped out of my hand hit me in my chest "purple nurple'I adjusted the valves in the field with no feeler gauges

you are correct about that

yes these particular engines are quite under-rated. With good maintenance and these will last a long time

I know right, gotta love summer time
the homes in our neighborhood all water their lawns, so mowing season is still in effect, just a lot less frequent now.

I like the way you put that
Your diagnosis was spot on as well as the steps you took to correct the starting issue. Keep these videos coming.
thank you and I will

yes, rolling it to TDC would help greatly and thank you !
@@HomeGaragechannel Thank You TOO!
Another great video. I really enjoy seeing u diagnose/eliminate problems. Plus, revitalizing a mower that may be junk anyway. 👍
thank you very much!
Btw love your vids and I am 12 and I know all about weedeaters and all that stuff and I could tell you anything about a carb or something and I made a few videos on working on stuff but I quit because I don’t have enough time
that makes sense, make good use of your time.
Nope I'd have to fix that one that whipping hurts man !!! Nice little mower now !
you got that right, the handle got my in the left hand a couple of times during filming
Thanks lots, big help
Sure thing!
I have this same mower it is a very good mower and great video
Thanks, and when running well, these are fantastic mowers
@@HomeGaragechannel I agree and thanks for the comment
When checking valve lash do I have to seal the valve cover when checking lash with high temperature silicone
I had a mower with a shred key and I made a new one out of copper and it’s better in my opinion
nice fix

you must have some strong hands.. this one was quiet the stinger
THANK YOU FOR THE VIDEO
No problem and thank you for your time
Awesome video! Thank boss
thank you!
If the pull rope is getting pulled out of my hand... you know... flywheel keys are cheap. I'd have replaced it.
Wow! An OHV Briggs with a metal carb? I didn't know that that was a possibility.
yes these transitional engines were actually quite good, but maintenance was a lot for some consumers
Excellent job. However incase I need to shut the mower off for safetyreasons. I rather have that cable working as it should.
Good call!
Hey bro what's up? In my opinion I strongly believe that I would of continued using the mower since most likely it was my only option at the time.
yes you bring up a good point about that.
Pretty big motor for a push mower!!
yes you got that right
@@HomeGaragechannel Might want to give the shaft a look to see if it bent, when the Key got taken out..looks to be an expensive mower!
I can't wait til i fix on mowers 😅
good luck
Where can I get one of those rounded putty knives
Amazon! Type in mower deck scrapping tool.
I use plastic body filler spreaders
Unfortunately I didn't buy it , I found it. This one happens to be from Hyde if you're curious

sure thing, it sounds like the valve clearance is out of tolerance and needs to be checked and adjusted.
What type of degreaser do you use?
Super Heavy Duty Degreaser from Harbor Freight
@@HomeGaragechannel thanks!

you're right about that. I've only known one person to do it, and they finally had enough when it almost hurt them.

That engine looks like the.powermore style of engine on this mower.or a chunda brand of engine
this one is the older briggs OHV before they changed to the plastic stuff
@@HomeGaragechannel okay thanks for letting me know that about the engine
Don't worry, soon Canada will tell you what you can and cant do with your mower.
it's getting to be like that everywhere
No I would fix it
I undestand
Instead of using a steel key could you not of waited to finish this video once the real key came in?
yes I could have but I have other projects I need to work on too, not just this one.
