Put simply, some of the best players have been seen with almost all variations of the settings. It is mostly preference with certain abilities just objectively better with on press (mobility/melee abilities) and some subjectively better with on release (hooks and very important skill shots). On release is my personal favorite with only a few abilities on press.
I have on press but, i dont know if you know, you can alwasy check the range puting the mouse over the ability to check the range :D, so you would be in the bush and chek the ranged and then engage, btw i always watch your videos big fan ty for your work
Most of the important skill shots like hooks etc. working well on quick cast relies on you learning the distances by playing the heroes a lot. The results should be pretty much the same in the end, haven't ever tried on release though.
I have on release as default, tend to swap all hover to select abilities to on press, like most heals/Xul' root/etc. It's just useful for aiming and reminding myself about the ranges when I don't often play the hero. @@davidpoveda7550 Yes, hovering always shows the range, but if your checking that way you already missed, or your already dead. But yes, you can remind yourself at the start of the match if you need, or if your wondering why you missed/the ability didn't fire.
General rule kind of at least to me is: Single target spells = OFF Skillshots and line shots = RELEASE Insta-spells/melee-range = ON OFF = Taunt, Cocoon, Polymorph, and so on, you simply don't want to Taunt/Poly/Cocoon the wrong target mid fight, would rather do it a split second slower/later than cast on a wrong target Release = Frostbolt, Lunar flare, Blizzard, basically 90% of spells in game ON = Maiev/Sylv E, I mean there's simply not enough time to release your escape and THEN again use it, you'd just rather tap and then later when in need tap again Fun fact = hit my Tyrande Owls (mid range or across map on minimap) best wit OFF cast, found out that with Release gets mighty hard to "aim and trigger", if you have enough time to aim then click is a much simpler/faster trigger than releasing a key cause the first is near instant, the second has a larger delay, Hanzo Arrow is another example of this, and so on.. For example Not 100% sure cause haven't gone THAT much in details but think that Kel'Thuzad for example would be best for me if Q was release, W was ON, and E (chains) were OFF, kinda crazy when thinking about it :D So I guess at the end comes down to what the player feels most natural for them to be, I'd say that general guiding rule does well for me overall :)
On Release is great for landing Garrosh stuns. You can walk around and use the highlight on the Q to make sure you're maximizing your stuns effectiveness and release at the optimal time.
I ran default since DoTA 1 days. Then when I switched to HoTS (from LoL and Strife) my left mouse button refused to work and I was too lazy to get a new one for a while so I switched to quick cast. Now I can only play on quick cast.
If you have some spammy abilities like tracer dash, you can sometimes cancel the dash if its on release and you happen to click on the exact time you press your q but before you release it
I used to run default on-click settings. Switched over to on-release for everything a few months ago. It a took a couple weeks to get used to but overall it has definitely improved my game.
Great and useful tricks, Paradox! Here is another little trick: you can use alternative settings as well. I use quick cast (on press) for abilities I tend to miss when I'm using the other settings (e.g. I did never hit Malfurion's Q for some reason, so I changed the settings and it helped a lot). Then I use alternative settings with hotkey plus ctrl for quick cast on release (e.g. Ctrl+Q). I can fire off the ability very quickly with quick cast in press (just Q) and see my cast radius when I hold ctrl+Q. For me this works really well in most cases. Finally there is another thing, I'm not a 100% sure of: when using on press, it feels like abilities are queueing up without pressing shift. This can be abused to chain up abilities like Diablo's Apocalypse into QWE combo.
The way I generally set it up is use on release for skill shots, and use quick cast on for abilities that are cast on a target, such as a Kerrigan ravage, or an Uther stun. The speed is just better for cast on target abilities. In fact for most healers I have to have quick cast on or sometimes I just can't get my heals off fast enough. So heroes with a cast on target heals, like Tyrande, Malfurion, Rehgar, Uther's Q, etc. I leave the skill shots on release, but I'll go into the hotkeys and manually change those kinds of heals to quick cast. Medivh is a good one to use both as well. On release for his skill shots, but quick cast on for his force of will and his polymorph ultimate.
I acually do because usualy if I use all blinks in the same direction its just as fast but if I use them in different directions I use the small timewindow in between to maybe reconsider instead of just throwing them all out, but thats just my preference I guess
@@saytix2878 I don't have a problem changing directions as i blink with quickcast, but if it works for you then it works. I'm not skilled enough of a player to be telling people they are doing something wrong x)
@@Harry64278 He doesn't understand how people play Kel'Thuzad without quickcast. He's played more games than he'd care to admit with the character and they were all played with quickcast on. What's hard to understand?
i like in press because its faster than on release, and if you're on someone you play frequently, than you should understand the range of everything. in my opinion, on release is like training wheels, cause you use it until you feel comfortable with trusting that you know the ability ranges intuitively
I use quick for point and click stuff, on click for almost all skillshots unless they have to be done very quickly like kerrigan's. Works quite well for me although on release is something I should experiment with more.
I feel like especially my support plays have been improved a lot since I use quick cast on press. If you are unsure in regards of range you can just hover over the ability icon to have a quick look. Also it's so much more fun imo, it feels way more "natural" and intuitive. Even though, I still prefer on release for Hanzo's W ability for example. Good content as always!
When I heard about quick cast I had set everything to on, but started missing a lot of skillshots. Now with skillshots on release and stuff like devour set to on I really improved my gameplay
I play Ragnaros a lot and he is a hero who I believe benefits the most from having little of everything in cast settings. W, the meteor, I have on release because I can line up shots or quickly catch foes running away while also being able to cancel if they dash (or change the meteor's direction). E, blast wave, is on press because you need it to quickly engage, disengage or assist an ally which can save lives. Sulfuras smash (heroic) is nice to have off because you can see the range and line up a snipe while in molten core or when someone is running away.
Oh you use a mix of "off" and "on release"? That is interesting. I couldn't do it since they are pretty much the same thing, but with different inputs for activating/canceling.
I tend to use Off for single target abilities as my mouse is not always on the intended target when I want to cast those spells other than that, I use On release for narrow skillshots, On press for wide skillshots, On for mobility
I originally went to all quickcast because my internet and pc were really weak, all kinds of latency and frame issues. So definitely having the instant buttons is important there. I'm used to quickcast on most things now. Though I did put Ana heals to on release, as well as the Nova Snipe in order to play the Snipe build which is basically all about hitting a raw skillshot every 2 seconds. If I played Stitches more, I'd be trying out on release for his hook too. For something like a Muradin Stormbolt, to me it seems crucial to have it on quickcast. Because there's going to be a situation where you just need to send it while eating repeated cc's yourself. So if there is any interference causing it to cast slower, it might just not get cast before it's too late. Similar to Raynor Q, you want instant reaction if you are trying to counter a Diablo Q or finish a kill right before they blink away or something.
Speed comparison makes sense only for abilities which follow other abilities in a combo. For abilities with which you initiate it is rarely the case that your cursor is on target already and you are ready to go. Most often your cursor is directing your movement and then, when you decide to attack you have to place it on a target anyway and it takes some time. Dashes and blinks are an exception where cursor position for movement is often the right position. If you have "on press", you wait with ability activation untill your cursor is on target, if you have quick casts off, you activate ability earlier and then click when your cursor in on target. There is no speed advantage and I think it is better coordinated when move cursor on target action and fire of ability action are all in the same hand. I use on press on selected abilities and global off (on for all or almost all dashes, blinks and such, spamy abilities (Jaina's Q, Ana's Q, Medivh's Q, Gul'dan's Q and so on) and follow up abilities for combos like Jaina's E or Li ming's R)

Ocnce u have a confirmed initial chain.. Spike and bomb. But if they are grouped don't spike until ultimate hits. That way u refresh and have a pull back for annoying opps
I play globally On Press excluding for Void Prison. That's the only one I do not use it for, it can really mess up a VP on press if you're not in range. Although, I've gotten to where I play pretty much 3-5 heroes and that's it lol.. mostly Ming, Zera, Mura, Medivh, and Tyrande. Not literally, but for ranked it's probably 2 or 3 heroes I play 90% of my games with, ming and Muradin. After so many games with the same heroes On Press seems so much better, because you learn your ranges. And if you don't know your ranges, then you should play those heroes more to learn them IMO
What about redefining keys, @NotParadox? I saw some pros do it for certain heroes. 1) Do you have any preferences or suggestions? 2) I redefined to "A-move" (for AA-heroes like Cassia, Raynor, Illidan, etc), and now it's smoother to play with them. Would you recommend?
It can be be nice not having to press a before clicking but having the keys set up that way means to try and run/get past enemy's without stopping and attacking them is suicide or for invisible heros trying to position correctly only for you to start firing off attacks accidentally
Still can't decide should it be onPress or onRelease in case of Dehaka Q\drag. Range is quite limited and at the end of the day its more about speed, but w/ range talent tongue travels longer and seeing trajectory is of more benefit.
I mainly use quick Cast and a view things on Release like zul jins axe or hanzo scatter. I prefer quick Cast because otherwise i cancle my abilities sometimes and i used IT in dota aswell . But u are right. skills like genji e need longer to get used and u got a Bit more space for error i guess. Its Personal preference in the end
I switched to HOTS from a fast phased shooter, so "Quick cast" fitted perfectly to me, maybe "On release" could be a good idea but i prefer to play fast way it takes longer to get use to the ranges of every skill but you will learn anyways, unless you are one of those "special" players, then you should stay with the "slow release" and keep playing with the AI
There are a few skills in the game that definitely get a bonus for using the aim indicator. Myself I play with global quick cast, but then have on release for Ana heals and Nova snipes. And I guess Stitches hook is one that should be used with aim arrow. There's others too for sure.
My settings are on press except Genji's everything and Anub'arak's burrow. On release or off on heroes like Kel'thuzad or Tracer seems too slow for me, can't imagine playing without on press as them, but then I know some crazy Kel'thuzads who play without quick cast and I'm just amazed how they can click so fast
i still think on press is better. because from my experience, reaction is better than timing in most case. my example is garrosh groundbreaker(q), when i do it with on release it seems enemy can see if i am looking for the sweet spot of the stun. but when i do it on press (training with the hard way) before enemy can think to evade, i already react to press q when they in range of stun. another example is stitch hook, it's the same situation. the cons is you really need to know the range of skill. but if you repeat in hundred times a day in the end it's become muscle memory anyway. so i think on press is still better.
I use mostly on press, because in a long term it is the best setting to get used to. On release and off would sometimes yield better accuracy currently, but in a long term, it is just worse.
I didnt know this existed for a long time and the game had no quick cast on default . I realised later but it was to late my hands already got used to it . I use quick cast only on genji q tracer q and tyrande q
I'm a huge fan of quick cast on press, whereas I know you're a big on release guy. However, I like quick cast off on characters where mouse position needs to be shifted such as orphea's dash on successful Q and Garrosh's throw. It's a extra press, which takes away from speed, but accuracy trumps speed for me in these situations. So Jaina, a character you play exceptionally well, I would quick cast everything bc icy veins. Ya
There should be global settings separately for skill shots and targetable abilities. Currently the customization process is a huge chore even if you just wanna have on release but for every targetable you want quick cast on. I have hots uninstalled right now and if I would install it, I would have to go through this customization again and it takes a long time and I can miss some settings and mess up in game because I missed 1 quick cast setting.
on release seems to not register occasionally if you press the button too quickly. I tend to find this especially on genji when i switch between on release and on press (for the e talent that does damage at the end). I do tend to press buttons fairly quickly, and have a mechanical keyboard, so its likely that the keypress registers for less time (but virtually certain that i dont have any dead presses because i never get this with on press). Anyone else had this issue?
NotParadox, can we get some full gameplay recaps from you? I enjoy the short videos, but would love to see some more variety in your channel. I miss seeing some good gameplay (and bad) to watch. Maybe sigh highlight reels of good and bad team synergies. Part of the reason I thought your channel was great, was the coaching work you did for players. Maybe ask viewers to send in videos to critique too? Just some ideas.
I disagree. OnRelease is slower than OnClick. You can press two buttons at the same time but you can't press and release the same button at the same time (that doesn't mean it's worse)
Off on everything except movement abilities. I've practiced many times using both quick cast types and for me it is so much clumsier and imprecise. I've given it a good go but I cannot possibly play at my usual level with quick cast of any kind. I need to press the ability key then mouse click instantly following it on exactly the part of the screen I want it. The amount of clutch heals I've missed by having to release the key right as my mouse was over a hero caused me to never even entertain quick cast ever again.
I actually find point and click abilities, like a lot of heals, are better with quick cast on, so on press. There's no release time so as soon as your ability key actuates the ability goes off. Most healers with point and click heals I go and manually switch them over to quick cast. For everything else, and for skill shots especially where precision is very important, I have on release. I can no longer stand to have it turned off, having to press and click makes everything feel less precise, and slower. But if you have a system that works for you then good!
thank you for taking the time to put this together and post it. I really appreciate this. FWIW, I wanted to share mine as well from watching many vids that only cover some of this, articles only covering some, I go over everything I gleaned all over from pros and casuals alike and this is what made my char control leaps and bounds better. Then have to match it up under quickcast settings for On release since I also on release everything but instant things like move, and put it on global
i think it depend highly on the hero and the ability ! hanzo scatter arrow and diablos push. quickcast and on release are not helpfull, because you choose the ability and you need the klick for the perfect timing. on mages i use quickcast, on li ming on release to get the combos the way i want
I'll take an ability that is 3ms slower than to narrowly miss a hook that has an 18 second cooldown. Sure you can memorize everything but pros need wide hero pools of heroes who are usually constantly seeing balance changes knowing ranges is much more important than 3ms. As for no quick cast some pros do use it but if you miss the click in between w abilities you will lose a lot more than 3ms so its preference and risk for all options.
@@NotParadox i use double binds with normal and quickcast... no normalcast is faster than on release... clicking at the same time you press is faster than waiting for it to release
the best option entirely is playing using the buttons at the bottom of the screen bc your kitten is laying on your keyboard trying to be involved

Ya
I love a good mix, with ana I have q on quick cast w/e on release
I have Quick Cast enabled because as soon as I memorized the range of the Heroes I play, I find no use for On Release.
I use Quick cast on all heroes. Besides Jainas 'ring of frost'.
Anyone else had this issue?
does the difference in game action time actually matter between on press vs on release?
is there any way to removes missile guide vector ? i've been bothered so much by that
I come from Starcraft & all my abilities have no quick cast except for one, Tracer's Blink
I thought you already made a video about quick casting!
Quick cast all, u can mouseover ability to see its range, but u must know its range to play good with char.
my on release option doesnt work, i guess there's something wrong with my keyboard.
"On click" is faster for single cast, but for casting 3 abilities in a row "on release" is faster.
Can you do automatic attacks?
The real tip to give to people is to unlock their cameras....
i cant use on release... to me is almost everything on press and some without quickcast.
"Considered one of the best players".
Should be "the best player".
I had no idea this was an option. This will make playing Probius and Abathur SO much easier! (Because you have to constantly cast spells with them)
Could you make a guide for rexxar or the lost vikings please? 😇
thank you for taking the time to put this together and post it.
I really appreciate this. FWIW, I wanted to share mine as well from watching many vids that only cover some of this, articles only covering some, I go over everything I gleaned all over from pros and casuals alike and this is what made my char control leaps and bounds better. Its long but its because of what happens when you rebind left and right mouse buttons/LMB RMB, and SMART commands. heroeshearth.com/b/tangentchaos/read/bestnotesevarrr-please-check-out-my-quickcast-and-keybind-settings-for-stutter-stepping/
TL;DR LMB attack move, RMB Force Move, Middle is Select, G quick ping, Smartcommands are CTRL+RMB, couldnt think of a better place for smart dcommands. Then have to match it up under quickcast settings for On release since I also on release everything but instant things like move, and put it on global
normal people would use On press in everything
using quick cast on ktz, dont know how someone playing him without qick casts :D
i think it depend highly on the hero and the ability !
hanzo scatter arrow and diablos push. quickcast and on release are not helpfull, because you choose the ability and you need the klick for the perfect timing.
on mages i use quickcast, on li ming on release to get the combos the way i want
Kerrigan combo doesn't work on release...
It definitely works.
@@Don_Hide You´re right... I just tried it... there was a time it didn´t work but now it does
This game is dead.. NOT! Thanks for your work :-)
On release is the worst and slowest of the 3.. cant understand why ppl using it
I'll take an ability that is 3ms slower than to narrowly miss a hook that has an 18 second cooldown.
How can you miss a click?
