  • In this video I fabricate a steering shaft to go from the 1981 Trans Am steering column, around the header, and down to the Mustang II rack.
    Parts Used:
-1" X 3/4" Double D Steering Joint (attaches to column)
    -3/4" Double D Steering shaft
    -3/4" X 3/4" Double D Steering Joint
-3/4-36 spline x 3/4" Double D Steering Joint (attaches to rack)
-Allstar ALL52132 Steering Shaft Rod End Kit for 3/4" Steering Shaft

That will work, I still have that step to do on the Fargo.

Thanks for the comment. I'm sure you had way more challenges with a 944 LS swap than I did with my car!

@garyscarstuff it's my first project car too lol, but this could have potentially saved me around 1200$ worth of header mistakes lol. The solution I have now I'm not the biggest fan of, I'm basically running the steering shaft between the runners in order to keep the shaft in the stock position(headers are from a kit which does it this way). But I really want a set of long tubes lol so I might look into this in the future

I had to "slide" my rack joint on with a hammer, lol.

Yes, I remember that video. I sanded the DD shaft down a bit so it slid in slightly easier. Thanks!

Ok, talking from experience, as you know.... Make sure the DD rod is not protruding beyond the inside of the U Joints. It will foul. Next, get plenty of lube inside that Heim joint, preferably before you insert the rod. I'm sure you know this, but just thought I'd check. Great to see you back in the club bay, well done.

Never thought about greasing the heim joint, thanks. I learned the protruding shaft lesson the hard way. This was my 4th or 5th version of this setup!

Nice!! Glad you were able to get a spot back in the shop. I haven't ever installed a multi-Joint steering shaft. And I still don't know what I'm going to do for steering on the Shoebox.

Yes, way better back in the shop. Better lighting and help when I need it. I was hoping not to have to go to a multi joint shaft but the header was in the way, so... Its relatively easy to figure out once have everything you need.
