  • This video is focused on how to remove the steering column and gear box from your Ford Model A. There are other videos out there to show how you adjust or rebuild a Model A steering box, and one also covers how to replace the upper column bushing for the levers on the steering column. I don't have the necessary equipment for a full steering box rebuild, which includes taking off the old worm from the inside steering shaft and pressing a new one on, so I paid a shop to do the work for me. The Les Andrews book does not go into much detail on how to actually remove the steering unit and I did not see any other video covering this part, so here it is! I hope it is useful for you.

    Doug; great job video'ing the procedure and explaining the challenges. I've submitted this video to the MAFCA webmaster to include it on their VIDEOS page.

    The steering box assembly mounting bolts are installed where you tighten or loosen the nut. The way it is with most fasteners. It's just that in this case you either slip a slotted screwdriver between the head of mounting bolt and frame to keep head from spinning and then loosen castellated nut.

      Thank you for that trick using the screwdriver to help remove the mounting bolts. Since this steering box was rebuilt, I hope to not have to remove it again for many years to come!

    I truly appreciate your video as I have been searching for exactly how to remove the steering column in order to rebuild the steering box. I’ve people say that to get the horn rod they lowered the roof - well what do the rest of us do who have closed cars? What did you have to do to remove horn rod?

      This Model A is a convertible so no problem removing the horn rod. I have been told with closed cab Model As, you can drop the steering column to the floor like I did and then there is enough space to remove it that way.

    You keep mentioning 30, 31. May i ask which year is your car?

      The car in this video is a 1931 Deluxe Roadster, but the directions are general enough to remove this steering box and column from any year Model A.

    Why couldn't you pull the colum up into the cab, removing the worm gear from the gearbox, and then pull the sector out of the frame? It might save you having to remove the floorboards.

      Hi! You can pull the entire unit up through the cab, you just need to remove the pedals from the bell housing first. I had not thought of taking the steering box apart while the steering column is in the Model A. Not everyone's situation is the same, but for some people, they may be removing the steering column but their steering is ok, so you don't want to disassemble the box as that will then require you to re-adjust everything later. Also even if your steering box appears to be empty, when you take it apart, there is a lot of that gooey sticky high viscosity oil that gets all over the place- a real mess! I would rather clean up all that excess lubrication oil after removing the steering box from the car first. Thanks for watching my videos and I hope it was useful.

    What kind of gloves are you wearing?

    • @dougfierro7155
      @dougfierro7155  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use the Adenna "Dark Light" large sized Nitrile gloves (100 box count) that are 9ml thick. You can buy them on Amazon. They are a bit more expensive than other gloves because they are thicker. I re-use these a lot, they last longer than other thin ones. For garage work you want gloves at least 6ml thick or thicker. www.amazon.com/Adenna-DLG675-Nitrile-Powder-Gloves/dp/B00QRELG56/ref=sr_1_57

    so far so good. Wouldn't hurt to pull the clutch pedal off.Should only take a couple minutes .Your access will help in the long run,not only that you'll get to see if there's any issues with the clutch pedal bushing.Just a thought Carry on ! Thx D.J.
