Everyone who was a teen in 2005 dreamed about this PowerBook, before they were even called MacBooks, we believe we could never afford one, we did get them as adults in the 2010’s as MacBooks of course, obviously better, but something about the 2005 PowerBook, I remember I bought the “Pc magazine” that included a whole chapter dedicated to it, I was in love, I was fascinated at the way the DVD player was designed, now it’s 2020 and all i use are iPads and iPad Pro, not even the macboook anymore, it’s crazy how times change and how some things were once amazing, become nothing just a few years later

As an artist and graphic designer, I prefer using a mac, but ipads are nice. I had a few in the past but never really got into the lack of multitasking. They look nice and work well, but i need to have a lot of things going at once, and even though the Ipad is technically very capable, Apple refuse to support multi operational apps/

It’s not about the MacBook at all, it’s about the touchscreen & the keyboard, the weight, the OS, I loved my MacBook but let’s be real, laptops are outdated, unless you have a big job like programming, architect, etc, but even if you’re a graphic designer you don’t need a MacBook just with the iPad, I know it’s easier to edit on the MacBook but honestly why do I need a MacBook just to edit ? Yes it can get difficult on iPad but you still can find a way to get it done, & it turns out better !! Let’s leave the REAL HEAVY work for macbooks and engineers, architects, etc, not editing, lol

    • @christopherangeli1141
      @christopherangeli1141 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@ReginaTrans_ i actually like iPads for the Apple Pencil cos that’s the best feedback and most realistic way to draw in my opinion. It’s simple things, I just love having multiple tabs and music, videos and other things like that. iPad has the power but is purposefully stunted to convince you to purchase the latest model. I don’t feel comfortable taking my hefty not even ssd drive machine in a fragile moving bag. So iPads are useful. I just don’t see them beyond an entertainment media capacity

Good thing they're so openable. Those CCFLs can be replaced with a strip of LEDs and the hard drive replaced with an mSATA SSD in an enclosure, which if you're considering repairing or replacing the battery life, would give you a not insignificant boost to energy efficiency. And then there's the mother of all mods, an MPC7448 conversion... though honestly just replacing the thermal paste would probably do it some good.

I bought the original 17” PowerBook G4 and used it at least 4-8 hours a day, for 8 years.
I bloody loved that £3,000 laptop - more than I’d previously paid for any car. The world advancing faster than the capability of the old PPC architecture, was a cruel thing to experience.
Speaking of wear ‘n tear; I had some interesting things happen. The first & most annoying thing was the tiny rubber feet falling off - fixed it by gluing some felt material pads, designed to attach to furniture with hard feet, when using them on non-carpeted floors. The scariest thing was that I came back from a toilet trip and as I entered my office, a small flame popped out of the strain-relief portion of the power connector - quite concerning! The last & weirdest issue was that with the almost constant use, coupled with the tremendous heat the laptop generated, my right hand wrist actually started wearing through the aluminium chassis, through to the CD slot!

My god. Those clips around the optical drive for the top case gave my brain a flashback to when I couldn’t get it to snap back into place, so i asked my father to help and he used all his force and squished the aluminum case on a $3600 computer I had just purchased.

There is a way to play* TH-cam Videos. Well, not play, but watch. After Downloading, utilizing youtube-dl. Download youtube-dl using TFF (copy and paste the link given in the command line, as the system will reject the SSL-connection when trying to download it with curl or wget - but TFF will establish one with its own certificates. Then copy it into /usr/local/bin and make it executable, as suggested in the download-manual. TH-cam-dl runs in a newer version of Python only, so I downloaded the latest Python3 for Mac OS X Leopard PowerPC. In my ~/.bash_aliases I created this alias: alias ytdl='python3 /usr/local/bin/youtube-dl -f 18 --no-check-certificate' ... this one takes care that the shortcut ytdl uses Python3 as interpreter/runtime, it loads 480p quality videos using the -f 18 option, and --no-check-certificate ignores that Mac OS X Leopard untrusts the whole web in 2021. May be you have to include .bash_aliases in .bash_profile. But this is how I roll things. See ya! On my PowerBook G4 15" HiRes model 1.65 GHz. Oh btw, I replaced termal paste just two nights ago.

Meh. The only PPC PowerBook worth the bother is the original Titanium one. The first gen MBP demolishes that thing in every single aspect. Including durability and internal frame design. Since it was actually done by Intel as a reference platform for transferring x86/x64 to UEFI.
I remember the debacle at the time, with people screaming that's not possible. But, low and behold. The UEFI specification we have today, is specifically the one first released on the Apple MacBook Pro, iMac and Mac Pro computers in 2006, evolving into a fully fledged 64bit environment as soon as Intel was able to crank out the 64bit Core 2 CPUs Which, the Core series was supposed to be, in the first place. But, intel in its usual incompetence couldn't deliver. So, they pumped out a pimped up Pentium Pro first. :D
There would have been no point in using UEFI otherwise, since it would have been completely incompatible with vanilla PC hardware. No point in moving anywhere from their standards compliant IEEE-1275 OpenFirmware when switching system architechtures, if they need to support a competing firmware specification for OEMs with the hassle of doing licensing just so they have to buy bespoke addon cards at added cost from subcontractors and detriment of the end-user. The addon cards were never any sort of a threat to Apple. since they had not made any for years even at that point. So, vendor lockout of traditional PC hardware would've been imbecilic. While "BootCamp" provided a convenient way of both selling a product and testing Legacy BIOS compatibility solutions that are baked into UEFI today on a customer base used to crappy and half-finished systems. :D
But, I guess the idea of Apple being a PC OEM was too much for cultists. It apparently still is, since most don't seem to understand there is no difference between the platforms other than the OS needing to be prodded a bit to bootstrap on the same conventional generic PC bulk, except with out the Apple tax and serial numbers. :D
Also, people's astonishment over Apple transferring to Intel was childish naivety. Considering initial development releases of MacOSX were released for Intel computers. As it is descended from NeXTstep 4.2, which, was targeted on the architechture first and foremost. :D:D:D:D
OSX had always been running on Intel's CPU's. And whatever else they were and are experimenting with internally. Probably running SPARC and RISC-V atm. in addition to ARM. Since porting BSD is a breeze. It's practically an OS with built-in platform supremacy.
People are idiots. Especially tech fanboys. Can't even read basic historical articles or Apples own website. :D
Anyway, Apple has been a PC manufacturer for 15 years. It's still over priced crap, though.

I have a late-2003 PowerBook G4 which I have owned for over 17 years. I never liked the way MacOS 10.5 ran on it even with 2gb of RAM. You lose some “modern” functionality but it really works best with MacOS 10.3.9 and is more compatible with whatever ancient games or other software you might have around from that era. Even the “Classic Environment” can be used with 10.3 so you can run old MacOS 9-compatible applications, too! 10.4 is another option but it seems to run best with 10.3. I love its keyboard which feels great, has backlighting which can be adjusted manually AND responds to ambient light, and it even has not-terribly-slow FW800 for connection to external drives or old video cameras. Cost a bundle when I bought it new but I got a huge amount of use out of it for over 5 years and while it mostly stays in a box now I do pull it out every now and then to configure routers since it’s currently the only laptop I have and my iPad doesn’t have an Ethernet port. On the downside, its PRAM battery is long dead and I can’t seem to source a new one, and I’m on my third system battery and it’s overdue for replacement.

There are several ways to play videos/TV/consoles (like Xbox and Playstation) as well as do video conferencing, if you’re willing to compromise on the aesthetics. I’m not sure if they’re supported but cardbus probably has its own processor and doesn’t depend on the choice of processor (PowerPC in this case). However, MacOS might be a limitation. If you’re not familiar, cardbus is the port where your wifi module goes. You can use a USB wifi dongle if you choose to replace that.

It's possible to watch youtube! If you install macports, you can then install MPV. then from the command line you just type mpv followed by the youtube video link (the full url in the address bar, not the shortened one) and it works. By default it pulls the best quality so it may be choppy, but there are scripts that allow you to control the video quality. I use it on my old imac regularly.
