    Even when the internals become broken or obsolete, you can repurpose those old imacs into displays with a conversion logic board. Idk if there's a model already released for this particular model though.

    Took the quick route, and used an external SSD to replace the internal hard drive. On older systems, the external is fast enough. There's no risk of breaking the iMac during the opening or upgrade process. An external drive is easy to back up, using imaging software; unplug it and pop it into another system.

    Theres a quick and dirty method ive done which was to simply stick an ssd to the front of the og hard drive with double sided tape and move the cables over. This way you dont need to fully remove the screen. Theres enough clearance for the imac to be sealed up again without any issues.

    I got a base 2011 iMac 27 inch for $20 at a yard sale with a bad hard drive, bought a 1TB hard drive with thunderbolt, formatted macOS to run off the external hard drive and boom! I got a iMac. It takes about 2 minutes for it to warm up and get going but for TH-cam videos and using it for my iPod, ds, psp mods it works great! And I’ve brought the drive to friends houses to boot their Mac off of it to mod their stuff.

    • @Simulation101YT
      @Simulation101YT ปีที่แล้ว

      The graphics on the CPU back then, was the Intel HD 4000, It was in fact worse than the one on the board (I'm assuming an Nvidia GTX 650-670), and even now, most CPU graphics chips have generally worse performance than that of an official graphics chip. Although the CPU upgrade itself would have been somewhat viable, it would have been more suitable to just keep the graphics chip on.

    Have a 2013 27 inch. Considered replacing internal drive but saw videos where screen fell off late at night. Mr Rosman? even recommended not doing this upgrade as they have had screens detach. Plus I shake👍😁 Hung a 120gb ssd off the back. Works well. The 27” is massive. Great big screen. Tried using a T5 and a T7 to boot from but no major improvement. So used a ordinary ssd. I think the T drives are too modern for the 2013 to take advantage of their speed.

      The 2012 model uses SATA interface for the ''Blade SSD'' slot on the backside of the motherboard, so no real improvement from using a high quality 2.5' drive.
      2013 and onwards models use ACHI/PCIe so those models do get faster with a NVMe SSD (with adapter)

    Hey, I have a 2013 iMac that I took the screen off and cant get to boot. Does it boot without bootmedia/os or a hdd of some kind. Is it possible to boot to an external display like a Macbook Pro? Any tips would be a big help

    Lots of hard work! I would have pulled out ALL my hair if I did what you did. I have a 3 TB “fusion” drive that is still working in my 27” iMac. Shortly after I bought the Mac a power interruption scrambled 25% of my data, which was unrepairable with the SSD/HD combination, so I formatted and religiously backed up ever since! Still a great computer even after 10 years.

      Oh God I hate fusion drives! Is it possible to use the flash memory on its own? I believe it is physically a different drive on the logic board itself.

      @@psivewri It is comprised of two separate drives - a small SSD and a slow mechanical HD. Sometimes with a Mac, the two drives can be formatted separately but the SSD is quite small - just a few GBs. The combination, when it works is for the user like a magic trick for the frequently accessed data is stored on the faster SSD giving the illusion that the whole computer is running off an SSD. But because data is spanned over both drives, conventional drive repair software cannot repair the data like a regular drive when there is corruption.

    No wonder people love the 2011 models. That adhesive seems to be a deterrent more so than AiOs are already. I'm Glad the iMac I found in the trash bin was a 2011 model.
