This takes me back. I was working at Apple when this model premiered and was one of the lucky few call center reps that was given one to WORK ON. This and the followup FW800 model were beauties.

Indeed. I was working @ Sony writing the sound editor developer tool for Playstation 2 on the previous model, the Graphite G4. The 800MHz Quicksilver was the best G4 ever made. Wish I still had one. I have a mint graphite, but not a Quicksilver.

@@SkynetCyb I got very lucky. I went to buy it and asked them if they would test it and show me it booted. They had it in their sheet for 40 bucks. It came up but the graphics card was obviously shot as the screen was a garbled mess. I told them I’d buy it for the going rate of the case itself and they said sure. I paid ten bucks for it and carried it out pretty sure I could fix it. I got an agp 9600 based card off eBay for reasonably cheap (40 ish bucks) and with a bit of tape marked off the pins needed to get it working in the machine. Then it booted right up. It used to be in someone’s sound studio cause it had an expensive proprietary sound board in it. Replaced the hard drive with something a bit faster (it doesn’t have SATA so only so fast the drive can read). Installed some old games like halo and went to town.

I've got one of these which I upgraded in 2006 with a Sonnet G4 1.4 ghz board to extend its life another couple years. Used it til 2010, and it's been sitting (powered off) under my desk since then.

About 2 months ago, i found same computer as this at flea market for 8€.
Without monitor. However, i was happy as child when i bought it. In Serbia, these machines are rare:)!

My Pioneer DVD-RW drive used to have a fan. It was a DVR-104 if memory serves. I also saw it on some older SCSI CD Burners.

Nice video. Do you like to keep your macs in their original configuration or try to max them out to get the most from them? I have a QS dual 800 that I have kept going. I like the way they look, better then the mirror doors.

Considering I don't use a lot of the machines I clean up, apart from them maybe being displayed on a shelf. Most of them end up back in storage so I feel it would be a bit of a waste spending lots to max the machines out.

These old systems are awesome.. Such a shame you can't pop open an Imac in 2021 and just add things! Also love you own a Sony Z1.. I used to but sadly the heads died after many years of service... 1100 hours as I recall, though the main camera still worked fine so sold off on ebay.. With any luck this Imac will still work 10 years from now then you can do an updated 30 years later video haha..

My job had a few of these that they were scrapping as they no longer worked, I was told. I asked if I could have one so I could rehab it with newer parts to make it a hackintosh. Sadly, I was denied. I still want to try this for a project.

I managed to get a hold of a Dual 1Ghz MDD G4 in the summer for $50. Pretty happy with my find because its one of the fastest machines that can still run OS 9, which is what I was actually looking for, since I still have all of my old retro mac games from the beige powermac days.

I happen to have a version of the Quicksilver line that has a ZIP drive on board. I also have 1GB memory, an nVidia Geforce 4 MX, and a 933 MHz PowerPC G4. An Apple Studio Display came with it too.

  • @yega3k

I used the studio display + a PowerMac G5 way back. What I remember the most is that the display never gave me eye fatigue even after hours and hours of use everyday! It was so comfortable (can you say a display is “comfortable”? 😂)

Will you do a video showing where you store your collection? Also, what do you do with them after you make the videos? Keep then up and running for a little while after or do you store them away to keep them safe from getting damaged.

I still got a mirror drive g4 , and an imac g5 wich i keep ..just because they work. Technically they still work fine with photo editing and does that very well but i dont use them..but what is cool is that they still work flawless..so i dont feel i wanna get rid of them somehow. I kept a working station of a win 98 as well . No idea why really but now all of this is starting to become rare

I still use my original-from-new twin800mhz G4 quicksilver with Creative Suite 2 on a regular basis for some small-business design work. It still boots quickly and serves its purpose.
In all these years only needed the PSU repaired once (professionally).
I was advised to switch off the Mac and unplug the machine to save the PSU - which is in fact 2 PSUs in 1 box This "standby-PSU" was its weak point.
