A real classic. (No SDD Wear, just replace many times you want) and im running macOS Monterey using OCLP :D

    2012 that's when I bought the MacBook Pro I'm still using to this day, I opted for the non Retina matt display DVD drive version though, and it's still in great condition and going strong, I only ever upgraded the hard drive and RAM, i bought a 24" iMac last year and I wouldn't consider it any faster or anything tbh,
    it's quite shocking how little has changed in the last 10 years especially compared to the previous decade 2002-2012

    • @GuillermoPaulman

      It's always nice to see old machines in daily use. The Unibody MacBooks were truly great. I use the 2011 one and still no complaints at all. I would be happy with newer version of Bluetooth and a touch ID, but otherwise there's nothing that would make me want to switch at the moment.

    • @TriStarIII
      @TriStarIII 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GuillermoPaulman wow good on ya! You're absolutely right, those macbooks were made to last so solid,
      and they cost almost half of what you will pay for the latest macbook..
      unfortunately Apple has slowly but steadily turned into a marketing company, no longer focused on the actual product, we haven't even touched on the new OS, there will never be another Snow Leopard I'm afraid :(

    75% battery health after 10 years is pretty impressive! I recently replaced the battery in a ~2016 XPS 15 that had only 30% health, and probably saw a similar life to this...thankfully Dell didn't stick those batteries in with adhesive at least.
    (It also had thermal throttling issues which I solved with liquid metal...well worth the risk IMO).

    You should probably get a set of screw extracting pliers. I got an Engineer PZ-57 for my MSI laptop because the heatsink screws came stripped and I needed to desperately clean it out. MSI, known for one thing: Overly tight screws.
    They bite hard into the screw and, provided you have room (you would have here for instance), you turn the pliers as it eats the screw. Of course the screw can't be put back in, but any method of removing a stripped screw is like that.
    Neat find and repair!

    I had a 3210 13" model when I went to school. It was my first and only mac overall thus far. 8GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD in 2013 was pretty sweet compared to my desktop at the time and frankly in general, minus the fact that the desktop had a dGPU. Ultimately while now I could easily upgrade a non retina, the retina with a automatic SSD at the time was possibly by greatest spec for spec upgrade. I originally got it for iOS dev before almost all general tools could make apps without actually having an Apple machine and realizing that was not the path my life would take. When I first bought it, it was absolutely banging and one of the best PCs I ever owned period. Unfortunately. software got significantly worse over time and Apple DESTROYED my 4s iPhone, basically killing off desire to full send the ecosystem. That + my need for just a Windows or Unix based machine meant I could not justify keeping it around when I could buy a "shitbox + SSD" for cheaper.
    I wound up thus far with a 3070 90 Watt laptop. I still miss the macbook here and there. It would not have gotten the proper treatment from me OS wise so I hope it brought someone else joy. But man if it was not a solid laptop between all supported MacOS versions, Win7, Win8, and Win10 (also Win10 on a USB 2.0 drive... Yikes.).

    Hi I actually bought the Unibody one with the GT 650M 512 MB VRAM for a good price and now I use it as my main gaming computer, sadly it won't run stuff like Warzone or so but on Bootcamp I can play Battlefield 4 on medium settings 900p 60fps, GTAV on low settings 900p 50fps, Fortnite on 900p with performance mode a bit over 60fps, CSGO on low settings 800p over 90fps and for last Valiant on lowest settings 900p over 120fps and so on. I hope it would give you an idea about the machine's performance if you are thinking of buying it but definitely look for upgrading to dual channel memory and an SSD. Even though you want be able to play the newest titles with great fps counts it still is a great machine. Thanks for the videos its always nice to watch you clean and rescue some old but trusty Macs !

    Still using my 2012 15" Retina MacBook Pro and have no issues with it, only the battery also needs a service and doesn’t hold a lot of charge.

    bought the 15'' 2015 MacBook Pro and used it hard until I've replaced it recently with the 13'' M1 MBP, it was used very heavily, most of the time under the extremely hot and humid conditions. it was a tank. refused to die. retired it because I want something abit lighter and long battery life.

    i actually have a late 2012 retina macbook, it runs great and it’s my main laptop, although the battery was in bad health, and 2 keys fell off and the display was dent but some of it was fixable

    I watched this video, watched the 8-bit guys video, then saw your comment about the seiko clock and had to come back to find it as I didn't notice it the first time. So cool looking, 7:28 for anyone else looking

    You're saying 75% battery health is bad? Look at my 2.5 year old chromebook's diagnostics menu (battery health 57%)

    • @psivewri
      @psivewri  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      For a comparison, the non retina 2012 laptop I compared it to still has 91% battery health after 1,500 cycles! While you can still get by with 75% capacity, it'll go downhill pretty fast from there.

    I loved to do this to my old mac laptops, Intel macs where nice to upgrade but since M1 I will never own an intel mac again. Not only are they faster, quiet and battery lasts me a week with my use using it 3-4 hrs a day.

    Thinking of getting one of these(the 2014 model with 16Gb Ram) until I can afford the 16 MBP. Will be using it for basic stuff(word processing, browsing, TH-cam, etc.) and some coding which I believe it should handle without problem.

    This laptop taught me that you can strip Torx screws… if the previous owner left it so dirty that the screws get corroded. 4:57 you can also try to use pliers to grasp and twist the screw out
