Great video as always Nathan. Something similar actually happened to me the other day, where I bought an old Macbook Pro for around $120, and the seller asked if I wanted another old one (same model suprringly) for free. These laptops with an SSD and RAM upgrade is still decend machine today.
“This video (like most on this channel) is sponsored by ARCTIC MX-4 Thermal Compound Paste” ... or at least it should be! Your vid’s are the reason why I own a tube! Also b/c of your vids I have the courage to open up my late 2011 MBP and replace the battery, ram, & hard drive. I don’t have any Eucalyptus magic, but I’ll do my best to get it clean. I’ve had it since it was new and I’m curious to see how it compares to the ones you have done on this channel. I figure that since I’m in there I might as well keep digging and clean off and replace the thermal paste. What do you reckon? I’ll be using ifixit’s guides for the replacement parts, but am not quite sure yet about how to get all the way to the CPU for the thermal paste. ifixit may have a guide for that as well... I just haven’t looked yet. Any advice you may have is welcomed. I’m a long time subscriber to your channel and feel that I have really benefited from watching your videos. I have a Mid-2012 13" MBP that I got in Oct. 2022 and back in April 2023 I got a new MagSafe port for it but then I broke the keyboard ribbon cable by accident so up until recently I used a USB keyboard with it. Not very comfortable! It has a Kingston 240GB SSD with macOS Ventura on it with OpenCore, and a small 60GB partition with OS X Mountain Lion. Thanks to you and Hugh Jeffreys's videos I bought a keyboard from iFixit and managed to install it myself. I need to replace my lid as it has no webcam cable and the back panel is separating from the display. I also need a new BIL (Battery Indicator Light) as mine ripped and now it won't sleep when I close the lid. I also plan to upgrade the stock 4GB of RAM to 16GB. Your videos are an inspiration!
Very nice work! It's inspiring. I inherited one of these awhile back and I think I should finally start working on it. It's pretty crusty, it bootloops, and needs a new keyboard. Wish me luck!
I have a 2014 and I just got a 1TB SSD drive in the mail to upgrade from the 256gb! Can’t wait! I appreciate your appreciation for old technology! So many of them can still be used today!
Your production value is through the roof!! But don't worry, the roof was carefully disassembled and then reassembled again - along with a bit of a eucalyptus oil clean while the roof was off.
In Asia, even utterly broken used macbook fetch for a high price. "Can be used for parts" usually is at the description when it looks like it have been ran over a car and snapped in half (the motherboard unibody part, not the hinge) while costing of at least $100-150 for that description
I have a case, screen protector and keyboard cover. I had a casing for the bottom, but it held in heat so I only use the display case. Every time I rub it down to clean it (the whole thing on the outside) it looks like brand new. For $2000, its definitely worth buying a $20 case with keyboard cover
Interesting you did this video as I have a mid-2010 Macbook A1342 I use as my lightweight daily driver when I'm not otherwise abusing my poor main Win10 gaming rig. Sure it can be a little sluggish coming out of standby (I forgot to install a SSD before customising and updating the system), but it's otherwise a nice little workhorse for light YT or playing Diablo II: Lord of Destruction when I'm in town at games day (over in Wagga). One upgrade I should have done after a bit of extra research was the RAM, going from 4GB (2x2GB) to 8GB (2x4GB) when I could have pushed it to 16GB (2x8GB) for not much more when buying the replacement ram from Australia Computer Online up in Sydney. The battery still has a good amount of life left as it takes like 3 or 4 hours to get down to 50% without mains (such as when I get hit with a blackout here). That is more than enough time for me to get word out to my common contacts I'm currently in a blackout, get a few YT vids under my belt (gotta love having Optus 4G Mobile Broadband modems on UPS's) and put it to standby before catching a few hours sleep to ride out the power outage.
I'm rather a ThinkPad guy (fitted with Linux) but your previous videos featuring old MacBooks fix/cleanup inspired me to pick up one myself, namely white plasticky A1342. Was joy to disassemble, clean-up & re-assemble it. With SSD, more RAM, patched Catalina and after through clean-up it's very pleasant to use :) However no luck in finding eucalyptus oil in my country
I have a 13 mid 2009 MacBook Pro as a backup. I replaced the DVD drive with a second hdd bay with a second ssd for Windows 10. Run the latest Catalina using dosdude1 patch and it surprisingly runs well. Windows 10 runs really well esp with the 8gb ram installed. Not bad for it’s age.
The cooling on that isn't too bad. On my 2020 MBA it reaches around 65C while having a few apps open and a handful of Safari Tabs, while it reaches 100C when doing processor intensive stuff heating up my whole house
I also got a free 13" MacBookPro5,5 from 2010, though it's sporting the 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo CPU. A local school was throwing it away, and my mother happened to scoop it up, complete with a working AC charger. It had the original 250 GB 5400 RPM HDD from Hitachi, and I'm still using that as my Time Machine backup drive. It also only came with 2 GB of DDR3 1066 MHz RAM and an NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB graphics chip. I immediately cleaned it up, threw in 4 GB of DDR3 1066 MHz RAM from my 2010 Alienware M11x R1 (that now has 6 GB RAM), and bought a cheap Patriot Blaze 480 GB SSD for it. It works beautifully, even with 10.14.2 Mojave (I used DOSdude's fix to get it past High Sierra). In fact, that's what I'm using to type this comment. I love the 1280x800 screen and the keyboard. It really doesn't feel like an old laptop for just basic tasks.
Hello! Good day! I hope you are doing well and safe and sound, despite of the challenges we are facing and experiencing amid the COVID-19 pandemic. I am glad to know that you are safe since you are one of the greatest TH-cam video creators I am following and currently subscribed to. I am a big fan of yours from the Philippines. I am Jerico Alba, a 2nd Year Mass Communication student and I watch how you restore PCs and other devices using your iconic eucalyptus oil and your skills in restoration of PC components (e.g. the laptop from 1990s, and repairing many Macbooks). However, you told from one of your videos that you have so many laptops that you have restored and you have no idea of where and who to give it to? And have you mentioned that it can be sent to viewers? I am one of your greatest fans since I subscribed you when you still have less than 100K subscribers, and I love sending likes to your videos. I have also recommended you to my friends and luckily, they are now an avid fan of yours. I also learned a lot of things in restoring a PC and laptop. However, the profits I earn from fixing them only benefits to our daily livelihood, and I still struggle for online classes due to the COVID-19 pandemic, for I only rent a laptop to use, just to pursue my education. I hope you can notice my message and be one of the lucky fans that will be able to receive a free restored MacBook :( Moreover, the video was uploaded in September 15, which is my birthday. I wish you a happy holidays, my friend! If so, this will be very lucky and best holiday for me. Thank you very much and I will still continue to be one of your avid fan no matter what! I love you and your videos! :)
Nice restoration! Cor, $150 for an upgrade to 500GB HDD is extremely expensive! My 6GB Acer Aspire from 2011 (with a 1st gen Core i5 CPU) had a 500GB HDD as standard. Nowadays, a 500GB 2.5in drive will cost less than £20 and a 1TB 2.5in HDD can be had relatively cheaply as well. A 500GB SSD can be had on eBay for about £50-£60 as well, which is also reasonably priced. The Unibody Macbooks were (IMO) the last decent ones, as after the 2012 Unibody, they went with soldered CPUs and RAM, proprietory (and later soldered) SSDs, batteries that were difficult to replace, removal of the DVD optical drive, and removal of various different ports.
Ive tried this personally on my 2012 retina 15 inch with the base i7 and it helped but it only lasted like 1 1/2 years. Might have been my application but whatever. What I tried was liquid metal. It did/does help on my 2012 retina i7 but Id love to see you test it out on one or several different macbook pros that had thermal issues. Dont change the fan curves but just do benchmarks and thermal stress tests between thermal paste and liquid metal. It would be cool to see if there is a way to extend the life (Thermal wise) of one of these laptops. Since a good bit of them didn't survive due to components failing due to thermal related issues.
Hey since you're applying thermal paste to the die itself you should actually make sure every part of it is covered, letting the heatsink apply it might miss some places and make it not as great as it could be
When I was visiting houses as a Technician you would see homes full of pollution , the filthy owners living in a rubbish tip . Thank god i had a updated Tetanus shot
A such PSU is not difficult to fix at all! I'd definitely have cut the wire and used my soldering iron! What can you do with on of these devices? First, not use Yosemite. You can patch it to Catalina without much graphics problems. iMovie will not work, but luckily the latest non Metal iMovie will run on Catalina. The latest GarageBand compatible with Catalina is the latest non Metal GarageBand anyway. If really you don't want to have to worry about Metal patching... install High Sierra!
I came across this video and was simply mesmerized by your abilities. Kudos to you ... sure wish I knew someone close by who could work similar miracles (for a fee naturally).
Sometimes just cleaning them out is all it takes. I got a 17" Dell laptop with a first-gen i5 for about $50 not too long ago (the screen it uses sells for more these days by itself) because it wouldn't run properly. Turned out it just had 10 years worth of dust and a completely blocked fan. Once I took it apart and cleaned it, it was good as new.
I use a computer that is the exact same model, has a big dent near the ssd, and has a bend in the same corner. I got mine for free fully working(with a hdd that needed to be upgrade but still)
Great video! You've actually inspired me to restore a late 2011 MBP I was going to list for parts on eBay. I have fond memories of the mid 2010 a1278 that I bought new.
Another question - should I disassemble my own MBP and clean out the inside? Does it do anything for performance and battery life? I'm sure my laptop is quite dusty after almost 4 years of use.
Man, new subscriber here! Been binge-watching your MacBook restoration videos since last night and I can’t stop! I’m currently saving up and hopefully I’ll be able to get a cheap 2nd hand MacBook that I always wanna get and do my own restoration soon! Great content man! 👍🏻👍🏻
Hi, hows that 2012 macbook pro that You ordered? Can we expect some another video about it? :> how it works in 2020 :> maybe some final cut pro 2012 macbook pro tests with 1080p? Anyway best video i have seen in a while on YT. Thanks for effort
Normally 4 pin fans there is plus/minus/RPM/fan detect easy trick to force fan on full speed all the time is to disconnect the RPM pin the PC will still detect the fan is there but won't be able to force it to stay off or low speed... It sometimes works with 3 pin fans just leaving the plus/minus connected... Usually laptops have 4 pin fans and if fan isn't detected it could prevent from booting. I'm guessing mac fans are the same... Or you can use mac fan control app if compatible
So, eucalyptus oil can clean those stubborn filthy gunks on the outside casing? Alright, Nathan. I'm sold. Gotta grab some eucalyptus oil myself to clean my own stuff too.
I have one of these. Bought it when it came out. After a 3 years the HDD stopped working. Apple changed out the original HDD for a 500gb one. Now it just seems very sluggish like yours. Gonna do a SSD swap
I recently got a free Mid-2012 13in Macbook Pro for free from my local recycle drop off with the Magsafe charger(it's in good shape), and did the cleaning, and I'm waiting for parts like the HDD cable, battery(my current battery has well over 1,500 cycles, and is mostly cooked, but no bulge), rubber feet, and SSD to come in the mail next week, these machines are for sure still very usable for daily task on Catalina, and I might even do the unofficial update to Big Sir. thankfully mine on my had some minor scratches on the bottom, but the hing clutch cover was cracked, and I don't feel like taking the display off to replace it, so I've covered it up with black electrical tape, and at the 3 foot rule if you are not looking for it you can't really tell lol!
I've been doing computer repair as a side business since I was in high school in the late 90's, and doing repairs for myself since the late 80's, and I can this is no where near as bad as some systems I've seen, I had one lady around mid 06 bring me a dell inspiron deskop(I don't remember the exact model) it looked in rough shape from the start, so I had it out on my carport to blow the dust out before I started to even figure out what was wrong, and when I opened the side panel HOLY HELL!!! the amount of roaches that poured out. after all the roaches had left I sprayed down my carport, and parts of my front, and side yard, I called the lady, back and said NOPE!! I'm not working on this, but you owe me $20 USD for bug spray for all the roaches that came out of your machine, or i can throw it in the trash, she grunted on the phone FINE!!! I left the machine outside, she came to pick it up the next day, payed the $20, and I've never seen her since.
Started watching your channel recently, I used mx-4 & crucial bx500 ditto for upgrading my laptop before i stumbled upon your channel. 😂 Think that's the alike factor
My 2009 unibody mac book pro is immaculate the exception that the speakers blew like the sound is raspy I have to replace them to be fair they are very cheap and it’s a great high school laptop for my sister
actually i got same mid 2010 for free of my neighbour w swollen battery. Replaced the battery, put ssd instead hdd, upgraded ram and now its my primary facebook/yt machine. Its very interesting how even 10y old computer can be restored and used on daily basis even today. Good job apple on those older macbooks !
I bought a Dell latitude e7240 for my mom (with the components) for $200 a few months ago. Now, the laptop was overheating so I figured "why not reapply the thermal paste"? And for some reason the motherboard stopped working. It stayed stuck on the Dell screen. 2 motherboard replacements later, no luck. I have no idea what the problem is.
Hey guys i want to ask i have a lenovo ideapad z400 which has some plastic back problems should i work to repair it it has a dual core i5 with a 2gb gt 635m and 6 gb of ram
I owned this exact Macbook pro 2010 before and it struggles to play 1080p TH-cam videos properly and games frame rate are rather bad. Not sure how yours are able to play 1080p smoothly though
It's always strange to see how some people let their laptops get this filthy. It's only a few minutes every now and then to get it clean. I like that you got that laptop for free. You were the perfect person to receive it for free because you got it to look and run like fresh again. Nice work!
I recently bought one. Mine is running Mojave and has 8gb of ram and an SSD. It’s only a 128gb one though so I’ll upgrade it to a 500gb or 1tb. Probably 1tb as I want to bootcamp windows and put an older version of MacOS X on it(such as 10.6 or 10.9) alongside Mojave to play games that are incompatible with MacOS or modern versions of MacOS.
i cant imagine how someone could let one of these things get to such bad condition, i still have a 13 inch from when i got it almost 9 years ago and i still clean it almost every day,
If the eucalyptus oil gets under the keyboard and trackpad, isn't that going to cause problems? I've tried cleaning a couple Mac wired aluminum keyboards and they died.

Great machines. I'm still using one today. Just need a couple of upgrades (SSD and some more ram).
Broken Mac: FIX ME
Nathan: Hello guys welcome back to another video 📹
Hey since you're applying thermal paste to the die itself you should actually make sure every part of it is covered, letting the heatsink apply it might miss some places and make it not as great as it could be
When the heatsink is pressed back on, it will flow over the entire die in a thin, even layer.

A bit off topic, but very nice lighting set up! The introduction looks very nice and vibrant!
Nathan what do you do when you run out of eucalyptus oil?
He never runs out lol.
Best restoration clean up video in a while. I think you should consider running an emulator
I have this MB pro and it runs like a dream. Now I bought a SSD and 8Gb RAM but needs to install it. In the mean time I will clean it like you did

Dad: son, can you fix my laptop
Him: Eucalyptus oil intensified
“I don’t know how people can use a laptop this dirty”
My friends: well....
How do you clean the screen to get rid of keyboard imprint? I use a screen cleaner solution and microfiber cloth and it doesn't do much
Started watching your channel recently, I used mx-4 & crucial bx500 ditto for upgrading my laptop before i stumbled upon your channel. 😂
Think that's the alike factor
My 2009 unibody mac book pro is immaculate the exception that the speakers blew like the sound is raspy I have to replace them to be fair they are very cheap and it’s a great high school laptop for my sister
Who was waiting for him to clean the screen with his eucalyptus spray. 😍
Good video as always, reminds me I should open up my MacBook and replace the thermal paste.
actually i got same mid 2010 for free of my neighbour w swollen battery. Replaced the battery, put ssd instead hdd, upgraded ram and now its my primary facebook/yt machine. Its very interesting how even 10y old computer can be restored and used on daily basis even today. Good job apple on those older macbooks !
Very Nice refurbishment.

I have no idea what the problem is.

sorry for my dumb question but what's the function of the eucalyptus oil?
I owned this exact Macbook pro 2010 before and it struggles to play 1080p TH-cam videos properly and games frame rate are rather bad.
Not sure how yours are able to play 1080p smoothly though
Your macbook may be loaded with software and bloatware.
It's always strange to see how some people let their laptops get this filthy. It's only a few minutes every now and then to get it clean.
I like that you got that laptop for free. You were the perfect person to receive it for free because you got it to look and run like fresh again.
Nice work!
I have this exact same MacBook Pro, however it has a MagSafe 1 connector instead.
i have the same thermal paste at home
Definitely one of your most satisfying cleanings.
I have the 13 inch macbook pro
It has an SSD and it is running Catalina and works perfect
I recently bought one. Mine is running Mojave and has 8gb of ram and an SSD. It’s only a 128gb one though so I’ll upgrade it to a 500gb or 1tb. Probably 1tb as I want to bootcamp windows and put an older version of MacOS X on it(such as 10.6 or 10.9) alongside Mojave to play games that are incompatible with MacOS or modern versions of MacOS.

I've got one of the 17inch 2010 Macbook Pros. This thing is a beast. Such a value. I keep thinking I should upgrade then i'm like nahhhh.
My 2010 MacBook Pro 15inch has a damaged RAM slot so it only takes 4 GB RAM now instead of 8 GB, do u have any tips to fix it?
Can you plss make tutorials on how to restore old laptops , because I want to restore old laptops like you.
So satisfying the cleaning of the MacBook or laptop

You probably shouldn’t actually use the brush for cleaning the board. It could lead to a build up in static electricity.
i cant imagine how someone could let one of these things get to such bad condition, i still have a 13 inch from when i got it almost 9 years ago and i still clean it almost every day,
Thank you for fixing computers

If the eucalyptus oil gets under the keyboard and trackpad, isn't that going to cause problems? I've tried cleaning a couple Mac wired aluminum keyboards and they died.
Hello! Just want to ask why do you use eucalyptus spray? what does that do? is it safe for all electronics? Thanks :)
