I just started photography, I have no gear, no lights, no "studio", no models to shoot and I can't afford school.
Sometimes doubts, anxiety, fear make me think that I'm not good at photography and that I'll never be. But I don't wanna give up. So, when I'm feeling down I come here and watch one of your videos. You give me hope.
Thank you so so so much for doing what you do here on TH-cam.
Grab your phone and create awesome images!
You can do it! Trust yourself!
thank you guys, I won't give up
never think that! trust me i have those same beliefs of myself obviously everyone starts somewhere! those let downs are only ruining your potential that can make you an awesome photographer. it also doesn't really matter the equipment a true photographer can make a picture amazing with a flip phone, with enough passion you can make any photo and your reputation amazing!
You become your own model :)
If this is simple, I can’t imagine what professional looks like lol
I have a lighting breakdown on my channel if you want to check it out 😉
Check out Karl Taylor
Simple does not mean not professional.
@@Robelkinsphotography yeah they know bro that’s why they said what they said
the model is so pretttyyyy
Not me randomly stumbling into Jake ❤️ great video thank you guys
Photographer Jake Thomas.... You mean Jake Thomas the best little brother ever! He added so much to the show Lizzie Mcguire!
"All of the lights" I got you girl lol You're not alone
I'm about to go into my 3rd year degree at a different university and it is concentrating on fashion, editorial and advertising photography. I haven't really shot in a studio properly and know I will have to next year. Thank you for this Jessica it taught me a lot :)
The lighting was great. He knows what he is doing. However, don't overlook the model. She was incredible. Great poses one after another with very little direction.
Thanks for this video. Really demystified this process for me.
2setup @7:00 3setup @10:45
That model was mad pro. She gave so much each take. Great style and man she knew how to work the light.
She was fantastic!
Your Majesty I agree. (You beat me to this comment). Props to that model.
Great video!! Who knew I’d be learning photography lighting from Lizzie’s brother!! 😍
Yes quality! Yes content! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾Such a helpful video!
This tutorial is perfect! You're lighting setups are totally down to earth and the results look stellar. You're also taking great care to mention lighting ratios and the effects additional lighting and reflective surfaces have on your shadows and subjects. I absolutely love this!!! Also, Jake is an amazing teacher and makes the concept of studio lighting approachable and fun!
Once you start lighting, you become addicted. A new chapter for you as you incorporate it into your photography, great video! You get the 4’x8’ boards from home improvement stores and put them together using gaffer tape.
I cannot find any home improvement stores near me that carry those boards unfortunately. It sucks! There is a company that sells a folding V-Flat now and they are a total scam. $200 for ONE V-Flat with incredibly cheap material.
This was awesome! Not only did I learn a ton, but this is the first video where the model actually gets to talk and give her opinion. I hate when photographers treat their models like they're just tools. Great work you guys!
That studio is gorgeous. I love the black walls and the strips of lights behind the backdrop.
I really love Jake editing/light temperature but with Jessica angles. Both are amazing. Amazing and super clean video. Shook to see Lizzie brother as a photographer lol.
Was not expecting to learn light ratios from Ethan from Lizzie McGuire haha but this video was so helpful!! studio lighting and photography is a new venture for me and it’s fun learning more about it.
I am looking to do studio sessions but had NO IDEA where to start and what to consider. The commentary and insight you and Jake gave individually along with actually showing us different equipment being utilized LIVE is beyond awesome. I felt like I was actually in the room with you guys. Yall rock and s/o to Jake, he was really dope
Will the lights in my house matter? I have two large windows with natural light but should I use blackout curtains? Confused about how the room should be.
Okay. The first time I've watched this was the time I've never use a studio setup before, then after I did experience using a studio, I felt weird. Maybe I just did something wrong on that shoot. Never position your model on the most far (almost near the backdrop) I would say, because it did create a shadow on my output. I did use 2 strobe light at the time, but it still did. Maybe the position of the lighting was wrong. Don't judge me, I never expected that I'll be using one of those someday. But as you progress on photography, you keep learning new things and it will became natural to you.
Weird tip: "Learn to make mistake, so you could learn from it. But don't be an idiot." Learning is different from being an idiot in the first place, but it's good that we learn from all of our mistakes after all! :D
And also Jess! The photos you guys took are stunning! They look like a cover for Balenciaga, seriously! ♥
Oh Jessica I love you so much!! I clicked this not even realizing it was yours; I just ordered my first light setup and I'm so excited to learn from you
HE IS THE LIZZIE MCGUIRE BROTHER????????? wow i'm old
Yeah that's him! :)
Wow I'm usually good at recognizing actors even as they age but I had no idea that was him. Thanks for pointing it out!
I'm older cos I have no idea who Lizzie McGuire is
omg
my jaw just dropped to the ground
"It's budget, this doesn't cost too much"
Proceeds to list things that cost too much.
LOL. For real.
In relative to the gear an aspiring pro already has.

Look! if you can't afford to spend a grand or two, dont bother. Use the flashlight from your phone.
@@travis8665 hahaha, that made me laugh. I agree tho hahaha.
For what it does it is not expensive at all.
I have all the top gears but I do not know how to use it, I start learning now hahaha
Step 1: Turn the camera on
Step 2: Remove the lens cap
How often I've failed those steps 😞
Your videos come to the rescue. I'm on a binge for lighting videos right now!! I think I'm about to get an alien bee
That model from thumbnail is stunning! Like seriously beautiful. Okay, going to watch the video now :D
Well... that was fun to watch. I'm a control freak, when it comes to lighting, so I rarely shoot outside. The differences among each of your setups is dramatic, and each is beautiful. Like many novices, I bought quality gear without knowing how best to use it. Because of the pandemic, I have time to experiment. Thanks for the ideas and inspiration. You're dope AF and I hope you do another live-stream soon.
so much talent in 1 video. Noa, Jess and Jake....just wow
Nice video, a lot to learn for beginners about how much a v-flat or reflector can do for you when using just one light. So many over complicate their setups straight away, adding lights before trying a one light setup first. Great to discover Jake as well. Lots of good content on IG.
Jessica can make any tense professional video into a calmer and humorous one 😂❤️ I really look up to you in that 🙌
i havent seen him in so long, this a blast from the past!
am i the only one mindblown with the model? this girl knows exactly what she is doing! the speed and precision in which she landed each pose really blew my mind.
underrated comment
I'm really glad you brought Jake Thomas on. He's an excellent photographer and I've been following his work for a few years.
Agreed! Jessica and Jake make a great team!
You are awesome, Jessica.I love your way of taking photos
Great control of the lighting I love how you guys began with shadows and worked your way out of the shadows.
Great video! She is a fantastic model! Thank you Jake for showing us more than just the basic soft light setups. Too many photographers are always looking for that soft light. Hard light needs to be in your repertoire. Good stuff and keep up the good work!
Agreed! Always good to mix it up and showcase different lighting techniques!
I totally agree and I'll fully admit (as a hobbyist) that I always search for soft light, but have been hesitant to try it out. I've got nothing to lose other than it looking bad at first :)
Great information!!! I felt like I was back in my college studio lighting class. Thank you for constantly creating great content for photographers.
Me realizing that I finally found Lizzie Mcguire's little brother after missing him for half my life. 👁️👄👁️
RIGHT! I just am stopping the video to google his name!! haha
I was scrolling to see if anyone caught that lol
WAIT IS IT ACTUALLY- holl upp
😮Wow thanks to you for this comment. ❤
More of this please. Nice video Jessica and Jake.
Awesome!! Wish you great success this year.
Thanks for the love! You and Jake made a great team on this video!
I've been watching this video since it came out, eventually purchased all the equipment necessary for it and it 's been great, just need a model lol
I needed some inspiration after my last shoot, so thank you Jess and Jake for showing me something new. Even better since I have 51" soft Silver umbrella, I love it
Ok, she's an actual profesh model. Amazing work guys
LOVE the single source soft light, it gave a rembrant effect without using all 3 lights
Jess you are such an inspiration to me, I love all of your videos.
Bro how is no one talking about how this is the little brother from Lizzie Maguire
I'm so like Jessica, the sun's out, there's a street lamp, yeah.
PLEASE DO MORE OF THESE VIDEOS!!!
THIS WAS A GREAT LEARNING VIDEO
Jake and Noa are soooooo gooood
Hey, great Video, but one quick question: you are using flash lights, right? But why are the light in the umbrella "on" all the time? Do they have a seperate lightsource and you add the flash in addition to that? Are all lights you are using flashes? And how are they controlled? All by a single remote on your camera? Thanks a lot!
Jake
I watched this like six times lol I just really want to play around with the single light set up with the huge diffuser! Such a good look and I have so many ideas I want to try now. Also! I believe if you go to a student art supply store something like Blick, you can find huge boards you can use as vflats or make your own. I know you can by them online somewhere but I would just DIY it because it can get expensive with shipping and all that jazz, plus you don't have to wait!
Thanks for the awesome video jess!!!
Jessica made me feel good about not knowing everything about lighting f stop ratios yet! hahaha, Im using street lights and sun like her too rn hahaha
editing of this video is on point! love the glitch transitions!
this video was so helpful!!! gonna be doing studio photography tomorrow for the first time (just to learn new types of photography hahaha) and this gave me some really good ideas and a general knowledge I didn't really have!!! 💘💘
This is a great tutorial, definitely pass by my account, Im gonna be posting BTS and details of the stuff I do and how I setup. My IG is @egurtsed
I think your brilliant Jessica!! You make Photography less intimidating!! Thankyou :)
Thank you two! Amazing works!
Idk what those 243 people saw that they didn't like, were just plain jealous, or blind and apparently they need glasses!!!! These photos were amazing!! You guys are awesome and so is the moldel! Can you tell me the name of the umbrella and diffuser you used? I'm a new photographer, I'm honestly a little nervous about shooting people but I don't want that to stop me from doing somthing I know I'll be great at! You definitely gained a new follower.
Gonna invest in the one light set up and work up from there! It's awesome to see you out of your element Jessica, those last shots were incredible!
Thanks Jessica & Jake Thomas for this very informative and practical video on lighting, please tell us something about your settings, camera & lens you both are using for those beautiful shots, want more such
This tutorial is amazing. Great content and it is very helpful for photographers.
Holy crap thank you Jessica I had no idea what to do with lighting! I have spaces in my room for it but the lighting is really terrible. This helps A LOT. Also thanks to your friend he knows a lot. Anyways bye lol
These models know their poses! Kudos to them
I had no idea he was a photographer haha this is so weird for me to see. Love it!
Thank You for taking time to teach us. Love your work.
I absolutely loved the video
Gosh some of the comments! That was an excellent presentation put together with a sense of aesthetics and education, well done guys! 👏
This is so helpful Jessica! Really loved this
10:03 noah: "I don't know what to do here so I'm just gonna look hot" 😂
Great video on lighting concepts! I want his studio!!! Where can I find out more about the vertical row of lines on his back wall? Are they home made? Or where could I get them. And Noa is beautiful! And can that girl pose or what! She's going places!
HE NEEDS HIS OWN TH-cam CHANNEL !!!
I also liked this video because she was like " Kayne this is your song...no one?.. anyone?.." 😂
So helpful! But like it's not that I can get them...
Jessica you are such an inspiration to me!!!
So cool to see the studio set ups!!
Someone else may have already posted this but if you do another video like this with multiple lights, I always like seeing what each light is doing individually before seeing how they all combine. Other than that, all the setups were great and the photos were awesome (as was the model)!
One light looks like the way to go. The pictures were the best and it’s more affordable
Thank you so much to share your knowledge and your positive and funny attitude! Love what you have accomplished, it is very beautiful!! Very useful for me!!
This video looks so aesthetic and that model is absolutely beautiful💕
This video is so underrated! This helped a lot thank you!
I am currently using a big source light on one side, and natural light on the other side to fill up a bit (coming from the window!)
. thanks for the video btw!
All the photos looked great!
So awesome, really great editing. Nice to see someone pushing their comfort zone and being humble about it.
Never thought I would say a person(s) could sway me to become a hard light fan but this is it chief. Perhaps the key is placing the hard light source the proper distance to the subject. Am thinking I place it too close they way I currently use it.
I know it can sound complicated but keep in mind the Inverse Square Law. Basically the closer the light to your subject the softer and brighter they will be but the fall off of light is gonna be crazy (pretty much a dark background) but if you back that light way back then the you can light a lot more of the subject even up to their whole body including the background. However you will get harsher shadows, hence the diffusion and the other lights. Hope that helpd
lovely lighting
Wow, this is a huge improvement from the other studio shoot you did with that male model (I forgot his name).
Please what's the name of the continous lighting kit you used as key light....
Incredibly useful. Than you so much!!!!
Wonderful explanation of the professional lighting based on experience photographers
Im not a pro but I love photo shoot and try my best to have good quality for the lowest price, so come up with some home made ideas that mimic professional equipment (that many people wont pay) , with OMG amazing results !!!
All the ideas thanks to people like you that actually show the magic behind the Camera
Nice volumes on the model by using the big hard lights... 🍒
Ah!
I was searching so hard for this and glad I found you have uploaded about lighting.
You're my photography Buddha now.

Thank you for making such a great video. Very very useful for beginners.
Great video, presentation, production, information and length all spot on!
Wait was he the little brother in Lizzie McGuire?
Von Fox Promotions lol YESSS
OMG HE IS :o
Omg ya he is lol
THATS WHY HE LOOKS SO FAMILIAR!!
Von Fox Promotions Jake?
Great video! what are the lenses used?
Looks like a canon 24-70mm f2.8 😊
Please help me understand. 1st light source huge constant light then add that white poster board for reflecting . Where is the flash burst coming from? Where is your fash
i have the exact same question!
@@kylehamilton6560 Pretty certain it was that big constant light that is flashing, often flashes like this are not visible on camera.
Great lesson Guys. Thanks for sharing your skills.
Beautiful model.. thanks for the tips
Lizzie McGuire
craig hawkins I KNOW! I was trying to figure out why I felt the guy’s face familiar
The voice gave it away instantly.
@@denniserandolph6244 same I'm like yoo I've seen this guy before
THAT'S IT! I was like WHY is this guy so familiar I've never heard of him before. Wow!
I KNEW IT OMG👀🙌🏾
