      @gilernt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      @@FromTheHipp Not necessarily, from the ones I saw in here all she really did was go down to f/1.8 and color grade the image. I, like others in the comments, appreciate Maha's style. Perhaps with either a different setup (like a film camera) or some basic editing, her photos could easily rival if not surpass Jess's in my opinion. Honestly to me, the word objective should never be used when talking about photography. Art is subjective, and photography in this case is a form of art. If you think Jess's work is better, that's your correct opinion, and since other people have different (also correct) opinions, it's subjective.

    • @gilernt
      @gilernt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@FromTheHipp What's your definition of quality? If it's raw gear power, I'd again disagree with you since I've seen many photographers be able to pump out top notch artistic work with point and shoot cameras. If that's too hard to believe, just watch any video on TH-cam where a pro takes a $500 camera and shoots pictures that still look professional. If it's editing, that's still subjective. Everyone can edit how they please and everyone can have their own opinions on it. The only thing I can think of at the moment that could possibly be labelled as objective is composition, but even then if you break the rules in the proper fashion, "proper composition" is nonexistent. In this case, I think Maha's composition is just fine. I again ask you to please share what you mean by quality.

      @obandutra1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +137

      To me it's the difference between their backgrounds. I think a lot of instagram and modern modeling photography is very within Jessica's style so that's why it's hard to differentiate yourself from the rest. It's a very commercial space with specific standards. Whereas being a photography student teaches you about the art of photography within the fine arts space and so other things are important, but those people are not necessarily selling or having their own businesses. I don't consider Maha's photography 'fashion' portraiture like Jessica's because fashion photography has become a very specific thing. I think Maha's photographs are more portraits, not fashion portraits. For example, Jessica's approach is definitely learned through what's seen online, which many times has that blurriness in the background - when she spoke about putting it in F1.8. You see that a lot in TikTok photographers when they get random people from the streets. It's definitely a challenge to blend both though between composition, trends, innovation, and have a sense of depth. I find it really interesting when portrait artists (not fashion photographers) end up making portraits for fashion magazines when they never intended to be in that space.

    Maha's images were more thought-out and she needed a lot fewer shots to get excellent ones. The fact that she didn't shoot portraits often is pretty mind-blowing considering how well she did. The image with the hand shadowing the face was jaw-dropping. As a former professional photographer, I prefer fast primes over the 24-70 2.8 (which I own) hands down - especially for full body shots. Headshots are beautiful with the 24-70 but I always shot those at 70mm when possible to avoid lens distortion. I also hate the flat on-camera flash. A reflector would have been so much more flattering, or off-camera flash. An urban setting would have been really cool for this shoot.

    • @TalkWithJoce
      @TalkWithJoce ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree, I think a less soft, more modern, luxury, pristine, dramatic, or glam background would've matched the outfits better. Like say a ballroom or fancy opera theater or high-end hotel for example or by a grand piano or like a Moulin Rouge feel. Or all black or all white. Or maybe even a bold, bright, cool pop of drama color like red or royal blue or possibly even bold orange or bold, cool yellow, etc. Glass, metal. Maybe sleek, shiny. Or if nature, a nature with more drama to it like maybe pristine snowy winter or Grand Canyon or really dark sculptural trees or tall, very manicured bushes or huge flock of birds flying or thunderstorm or metal sculpture or something. But this was a great exercise in just working with what weather and light and nature were around. I think the model probably wore outfits which really express her which is great and authentic!
      After I wrote this I glimpsed on her Instagram and sure enough I see tons of those luxury and drama vibes I was describing! Nice! I feel validated in the vibe and style cues I picked up.

      Maha would have struggled even more if the model was a new model rather than an experienced professional model. Maha still did a good job. Art is subjective of course, but if you look at professional work Jessica has that factor.

    So cool. When I first started about 45 years ago I did a lot of time-consuming setup, although it was then about 90% a hobby, with about 5% paid and 5% professional and related learning. I worried about the time spent, the film costs, the development time... Every shot had to be a lot more planned. After about 10 years I no longer had concerns as it was much more creative, and the money supported the costs without issue. I started to get a bit of a voice, and realized how far I had to go (and still have to, even decades later).
    After another decade of shooting (in the late-90’s to maybe 2010, the challenge became staying creative, and I started focusing mainly on high-end portraiture for wealthy family, estate photos etc using everything from 35mm to medium and large format. The money was good, although I only shot maybe 15 hours a week.
    During the last decade plus it has become more about fun and trying new things, and digital cameras have been a major part of that- and especially mirrorless. Most importantly, the tools have progressed so far since the late-80’s. I know people say the gear and tools don’t matter, and while that may be the case for some types of shooters, subjects and styles of photography, I feel that the new post options alone has exploded the creative possibilities. I no longer have to use a bunch of lighting and related gear to craft so heavily during acquisition; and instead, can decide in post where I want to take and tweak things- far beyond what we used to do in the 70’s - 90’s in the dark room.
    I feel we are entering a new era of acquisition and post all over again, where any inherent technical or related limitations will no longer be the major issue, but rather, what creative composition, subject and post ideas you have. Most cameras have advanced to the point where lens choices and digital post are the major factors now. For me, this is wonderful, as I have so much I need to explore and learn still, and being able to do this so easily is amazingly engaging and fun- and the fact that there are no longer chemicals and hundreds of pounds of supporting gear, make it that much better!

    I like Maha's overall. Maha seemed to be more professional in directing the model and definitely in regards to the outcome of the photographs. Her work was stunning!
    Jessicas directions involve an awkward laugh at her own jokes which weren't funny and made the situation feel odd and trying too hard. Her way of directing was "Can you do something were you, yeah bring in your shoulder yeah" (which the model already was doing).. "let's do one of you just standing" (where the model already is in a standing position and then creates her own pose whilst standing). " OR where Jessica says "Have like one leg out a little bit more" she was not specific on which leg, her leg was out already and only moved it out the tiniest bit. I feel the model is creating her own poses with Jessica and then Jessica is just agreeing, like again when the model had her arm up with her hand over her head and near her face, she just says "yeah, that's beautiful, very nice, I like the hand" Her arm was already there on her own. The point being is that the model knew how to pose and create the look. I didn't see Jessica directing her and I didn't see any creative compositional ideas and not utilizing the wondrous space and is just stuck in one little zone.
    Personally, I thought Maha did more, as she specified what and how she wanted her to be positioned. Adventured to spacious areas, was also creative with her shots. Jessicas lighting to me seemed dull and had light and shadows where I don't think there should have been. Jessica seemed introverted herself and a slight bit more towards being extroverted only when throwing out jokes and laughing at her jokes which seemed like a cover-up for her anxiousness.
    I think they both can take a photograph, however, id probably go with Maha as I feel propelled towards her talent, which she seems to show throughout her work. Also, the black and white photo was amazing. Maha's style is just my personal preference of choice :)

    • @keepsmiling1360

      I guess maha is like in her beginning phase and a bit unsure about the poses she wants but Jessica has more experience hence has more clear direction. I feel its important to make your model comfortable before so Jessica was joking a bit around.
      I really liked the shadow effect in Jessica's photo as it just adds depth to photo but its just personal opinion
      Overall I think both did a fantastic job and I would like to work with both of them

    • @remberkd9585
      @remberkd9585 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I totally disagree with you, she didn't need to do unnecessary directing that you are referring to because the model is already so good and knows what she is doing, her job was to validate the model's pose and adjust it a little bit so it looks the best in the photo
      (also there are non-verbal words that only the model will understand since they have a connection at that moment so your example of "Have like one leg out a little bit more" and "yeah, that's beautiful, very nice, I like the hand" says a lot to the model than to an outsider)
      the only awkward moment the TH-cam channel owner made is her giving her back to the model while talking to the camera when there were no need to it....
      other than that there were no awkwardness in taking the actual photos
