      Ciao Tom, ottima domanda! The past perfect in Italian is usually "trapassato prossimo", which is made with imperfetto di avere + participio passato, so in your example "Avevo preso i soldi" (I had taken the money)

    Hi Valentina. Quick question: is Voi used for both formal/informal? In spanish we have vosotros (infor) and Ustedes (formal). Trying to make use of my Spanish to learn Italian....How wonderful to know Latin languages!

    • @ItalianTeacherValentina
      @ItalianTeacherValentina  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, in Italian "voi" is the only form for plural you, so you can use it both in formal and informal contexts. 😉

    Hello, I am brushing up on my Italian (which I learned as a boy, without grammar!) .... I also teach languages (English/German): It might be helpful for people to understand the slight difference between the imperfect and the "prossimo," which is in fact the present perfect.... The "perfect" refers to the completed action in the past. .... whereas the imperfect is an action that was not completed (also simple past). The Germans have the "Perfekt) and the Präteritum" to express these two past actions.

    So, imperfetto = past simple? Well, this is a very useful information indeed. From now on I can use either past simple or past perfect in italian depending upon a situation. Because this is a large distinction for me between "I did" (io facevo) and "I have done" (io ho fatto). I hope, I understood your correctly? It enlarges my possibilities in the conversation. When H alphabet is always silent then why do you have H in your alphabets

    • @ItalianTeacherValentina
      @ItalianTeacherValentina  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Buona domanda! *Good question The fact that it's silent doesn't mean it doesn't have a role in our language. For example, the "h" changes the sound of some letters (c, g...) and is also used in the verb "avere" as you saw in the video, and that also avoids confusion in writing between words that have the same sound but a different meaning (like "o" = or and "ho" = I have)

    What is the different in between

    • @ItalianTeacherValentina
      @ItalianTeacherValentina  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The difference between what?

    • @mdabdulquadar3058
      @mdabdulquadar3058 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Io avevo and Io ho avuto means avere imperfetto and Avere passato prossimo

    • @ItalianTeacherValentina
      @ItalianTeacherValentina  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mdabdulquadar3058 Io avevo is more similar to "I used to have" and "Io ho avuto" is more similar to "I had" in English, although oftentimes "Io avevo" can mean "I had" in English also. The point is that in English one expression (I had) can have different specific meanings depending on the context, whereas in Italian you need to be more specific and pick the right one. I'm definitely going to make a video on this difference in the near future!

    Perhaps without the grammatical grounding that some languages have english speakers may need the context around each type verb tense to understand.
