Want to learn the Essere Conjugation in Italian? Here are 5 BASIC Tenses of the Italian Verb TO BE that you need to know if you are learning Italian.
This video is also great for you if you need a refresher on Italian verb conjugation and want to check your pronunciation for the different forms of the Italian verb to be.
Keep in mind that the Italian Verb Essere is one of the Italian irregular verbs. This means that it doesn’t follow the general rules for Italian verb conjugation (the common Italian verb endings) so it may be a bit more difficult to actually memorize it. But Essere is also one of the most important and definitely most common Italian verbs, so you really need to learn this well.
So in today’s video, we will go through the exact conjugation for the Italian verb Essere together.
You will learn how to conjugate Essere for the following 5 tenses, which are the most important to know if you are learning Italian, as they are the most commonly used Italian conjugations:
• Presente - Essere Present Tense Conjugation
• Passato prossimo - Essere Present Perfect (Past Tense) Conjugation
• Imperfetto - Essere Imperfect Tense Conjugation
• Futuro semplice - Essere Future Tense Conjugation
• Condizionale presente - Essere Present Conditional Tense Conjugation
In the end, you will be able to conjugate the Italian verb Essere and you will also learn the correct pronunciation for each of its forms.
Hope you’ll love this video!

As a French speaker and Spanish speaker, learning Italian is fun because of the similarities. It is structured exactly like French and it sounds like Spanish 😁

Hi - very clear lesson thank you. Some examples to explain when imperfetto and passato prossimo would be used would be very helpful.
I have that already on my list for future videos! 😉
Hi Stella, thanks for the video explaining various tenses of the verb "essere". Please my request to you is to clarify differences between 'I was =sono stato' and *I was =ero*. The rest of the tenses are very clear and I thank you for doing that. You're a great teacher indeed. Ci vediamo la prossimo video.
Certo, I just added it to my list! Buona giornata!
Cin cin! Ciao bella!

Thank you for this great video. I seem to remember what I learned best with examples. e.g. Oggi sono contento. Ieri ero felice. Do you have any lessons that use this verb in actual sentences? Mille grazie.
Not yet but I have already added it to my list for future videos.

Imperfecto,that is.
Can you please do video of a conversation where you speak in future tense much of the time? It would be helpful, and there doesn't seem to be much material like this available.
I also would like a video about the differences between Essere imprefetto and Essere passato prossimo. thank you
I have a dedicated video where I explain the difference between these two tenses 😉 th-cam.com/video/nHrpQFtl-ts/w-d-xo.html
@@ItalianTeacherValentina Grazie

I'm planning on making more videos with example sentences
Buonasera Valentina Stella! Would you please make a video about the differences between Essere imprefetto and Essere passato prossimo. thank you
Great ..im always study
Hi dear Stella I would like to know how to make difference between verbi essre and avere while speaking.
Thank you.
You're really cool with your explanations. do you have any video on how to use the Imperfetto?
Graze Ameh, not yet! I will make one in the future.
Thank you
Please I will like to know the difference between imperfetto and passato prossimo please
Please make the video on the difference between imperfectoo and passato prossimo
thanks for the videos. Small feedback, my italian coach suggested that the english translation you used for passato prossimo for eg io sono stato , is better as i have been.
The imperfetto, io ero you translate as i was.
Unfortunately that's often not correct, that's why I didn't use it. It's actually a very common mistake (most of the times).
Let me give you an example: if you wanted to say "I have been a doctor for 20 years" and you translated it with "sono stato un dottore per 20 anni" you would actually be saying "I WAS a doctor for 20 years". That's what that sentence REALLY means in Italian. Totally different meaning.
So: I have been a doctor for 20 years (you still are) > Sono un dottore (or "faccio il dottore") da 20 anni
I was a doctor for 20 years ( you are not anymore) > Sono stato un dottore per 20 anni.
Also, imperfetto is mostly used to say "I was" as in "I used to be", e.g. "Ero un dottore" (I used to be a doctor).
I hope this clarifies it.
Please construct a sentence with this tenses so that we will understand more
Please explain the difference between passato prossimo and Imperfetto ..where and how to use.... Thank you
Thank you, for the wonderful classes. God bless you.
Hello Valentina, I love your videos, and I think I am learning. I am a native English speaker who learned Spanish as a young adult. Now, I want to learn another language, and I have chosen Italian because of various reasons. The subjunctive verb mode is used a lot in Spanish. Have you created a lesson on the use of the subjunctive in Italian? Thanks for your lessons. I look forward to making more progress😊
Ciao e benvenuto! No, I don't have a video on the subjunctive yet. In bocca al lupo per il tuo apprendimento dell'italiano! :)
Fantastico
❤
could you plz make a detailed video on essere uses in coversation
plz i need videos about essere 😊
Please may I know how remember to change the famine and masculine in verbi essre.
Thank you.
It depends on the subject. The gender of the subjects determines how the word after "essere" changes
Dear teacher, we need at least one example sentence with each tense, if possible. Thank you. You are very clear in your explanations. God bless.
Please pretty please if it is convienient to you, make a video about where do you use passato prossimo and where - imperfecto. Would be great to know!
8:37 please can we have a video to explain the difference between passatto prossimonand imperfetto
Here you have it 😉: th-cam.com/video/nHrpQFtl-ts/w-d-xo.html
nice mam . thanks
Please further explain imperfections and passato prossimo for essere
I have that in my list for futre videos 😉
4:16 i would like to know
Please how do we use the essere passato prossimo and essere imperfetto ?❤
Hi Valentina. Should it be also io/tu stato for a male and stata for a female like in lui/lei?
Yes, exactly! Any time you use essere, the following word needs to match the gender of the subject. So for example for me it would be "io sono statA"
Hi stella thank you for the video I would like to know about the essere imperfetto and passato sono Stato and ero
Noted!
Do you have a website? This was perfect. I have other apps and tutorials, textbooks, and I am struggling. Please help
I'm glad you found it helpful, Robert. And yes, I do have a website and you can also find my online courses there: www.valentinastellatutor.com/
Can you do a verb conjunction for Stare?
I understand essere is the verb, To Be, in other words to describe existence, but does this verb also describe location? For examples, I am here or you are at home. Would this same verb be used in these 2 cases??
Great
Yes define difference between Passat prosimmo and imperfecto
I would like to learn the Use of g, gn, ghi, gn
Do you have a video on how to conjugate regular verbs, like parlare, for all 5 tense? The same 5 tenses you did here for essare. Or even 5 videos for the 5 tense? If not, could you make one?
Not yet, I've done 3 tenses for many irregular verbs, you can find them here: th-cam.com/play/PLaeKp_sNLJVxQEqQsnOs0LngGTMf-DwVn.html
For regular ones, I do explain how to conjugate them in present tense in my beginner course, Italian 101: www.valentinastellatutor.com/how-to-enroll-in-the-italian-course-101/
And I've noted down your request ;)
@@ItalianTeacherValentina Thank you. Yes, I wiill ontinue watching your verb vidoes. You do a magnificent job in teaching.
I am new to Italian. I love how u teach but it is so confusing the conjugation of Essere. I am getting so mixed up. Help
Can you teach us how to say talk/talking etc Grazie
This is an old video, but some people still watch it. I was, you were, etc., are simple past forms. So saying that "I was = Io sono stato" is INCORRECT. It should have been: "I have been = Io sono stato", etc.
Osm thanku so much 🤍
Explain the difference between passato prossimo and imperfetto.
Buongiorno! grazie mille per i video!. I learn a lot from you, but have to say, in one moment I was very confused because ... in Passato prossimo, at 4:11 you have " He/She were.." but that is not correct in English! 🙃so it took a moment to understand what you were actually saying...I had to ask my Italian Husband to clarify... 😋 Non ti preoccupari! just wanted to let you know. Otherwise I really enjoy your videos!
Yes, I am aware I made a mistake. For some reasons, my brain switched to subjunctive 😅 Glad you enjoyed the video anyway!
