They have to call it the Silverado because of EPA regulations dictating each MODEL LINE must make 22+ MPG. So all Silverados overall must have 22+ MPG. This is the same reason the Mustang and F150 brands got ruined. Big Government is ruining cars

I worked on the project and the EPA had nothing to do with it. It was a Silverado from the get go. That was the whole idea! The look has more to do with aerodynamics and weight savings than anything. The revival of the mid gate has been a much requested feature for years and the unibody made it possible.

So many contractors and company bosses are buying the PLATINUM TRIM LEVEL to get all the 9.6 KW on-board Pro-Power, speed, handling and quiet interior luxuries of the F150 Lightning while saving money on gas!
If you make $75,000 CDN ($56,000 USD) per year, you can afford this truck even at $1600 CDN ($1200 USD) per month for the monthly finance payments! At year end tax time with the business expense write-off and federal/provincial rebates targeted for this truck, it means you're only paying $1050 CDN ($790 USD) net per month which is DEFINITELY a contractor and business friendly expense for a luxury truck!

A great example of electrification being pushed (by the automakers not the govt) to the most popular/profitable segments rather than the ones it makes most sense to electrify first. GM should be building an EV Express van before this, because so many van use cases involve starting from the shop/yard/warehouse, going over a fixed multi-stop route with lots of opportunites for regen and idling to cut, and then going back to that base where overnight charging can happen.
On the personal-vehicle side it means keeping the Bolt in production as long as its' selling!

So you could go say 120 miles and charge for 15 minutes or so, instead of going 200ish miles and charging for an hour. • @voldar70
      @voldar70 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Nope. You charge to 70%-80% when you don't need the range. If it's for a road trip, EVERYONE who has an EV will always charge to 100% at the start of the trip. Why ? Pretty simple : you cover the most of the distance in the first leg of the trip then you stop charging and you do it to about 80%. In this case, with 1 mi/kWh you drive the first leg about 190 miles (you get to the charger with about 5-8% SOC) and you charge to 80% and move to the next charger that's about 150-160 miles away. And then you repeat.
Unless people pee in bottles while driving, every 2.5-3 hours you make a stop of about 25-30 minutes (not sure yet about the time to charge to 80% this truck) and then go back to driving.
One thing is sure : it will take longer to do the trip, but you'll be a lot more rested after driving 500-600 miles in a day. I doubt anyone tows anything more than 600 miles in a day. And I doubt you drive 80 mph towing something either.

True. The savings you will see from an EV will be the charging done at your house. For instance my wife has put 2500 miles on her model 3 in roughly 2.5 months. So far we’ve charged it 943 kWh which has cost us 108$. If I took my Honda civic that gets 30mpg and in that 2500 miles we would of used 83 gallons of gas and at 3.50$ gallon that would have cost 291$.

It uses more electricity to drive 500 mi than the national average home in the United States uses the entire month. In 1 hour of charging that electric semi, it used the same power as 800 homes throughout the country during that hour of charge.

We have been off-grid for years and we have 7500 miles on our 22 F150 Lighting charged entirely on solar. We decided to sell only due to winter which makes summer trip destinations impossible. Lighting is the same when connecting a trailer it cuts it in 1/2 but I mostly just go by the calm screen for range. Here's the other problems heat is 5.1kw while AC is 3.2kw. The use greatly impacts range and if you go for a 2 there and back trip hour trip towing 2000lbs we have to use it sparingly to the point of being uncomfortable. The other option is to use it and drive a 60 miles out of the way to charge to get back.

100 kw*hr battery in the Tesla weighs 1400 pounds. Scaling linearly that would put the 212 kw*hr battery in the Sliverado EV at 2968 pounds. And that's ignoring the fact that a truck battery may be more conservatively designed (thicker insulators between plates, thicker cables, thicker current collectors, more internal cooling passages) to cope with higher average power output from being in a larger, heavier vehicle. 8500 pounds for a truck that can only do the work of a 1/2-ton is ridiculous. No wonder GM pulled the plug on the entry level, low-cost version with the smaller battery.
Any accident sites where one of these has crashed will become a toxic waste site.
Never mind the range estimate from the video. 1.0 mile/kw*hr was just how low it got on their short test drive with the trailer. The gauge started at 1.8 mi/kw*hr and lost 44% of its value during the drive. If they had driven longer, it would have gone lower. This was a softball photo-op to introduce the truck, all the while keeping the speed at 45 mph or below. Put a full-size travel trailer with 102 sq ft of frontal area behind the truck and tow it at 70 mph. Then you will be real-world testing.

I mean so the going rate at most fast chargers is what 40-50 cents? 1 KWH while towing means its going to cost you about $100 to recharge the battery to go a whole 200 miles? I dont think they solved the issue. They might be able to go a little further on a charge but its still not feasible. I also assume the range per mile will drop to even less when at highway speeds with a travel trailer or anything a little less aerodynamic since that tractor wasn't to bad over the height of the truck unlike a lot of RVs or enclosed trailers. You can easily get 10mpg out of a ecoboost or hemi pulling that tractor no problem which means you can go further and cheaper on ICE models still.

Anyone who was surprised by the range being lowered by a large percentage, when towing. Imagine how electric motors sound when they run. The funny thing is that your gas engine has the same exact sound.
First, you are driving on flat ground and you dig into the throttle. You hear what I am saying.
Second, you are now driving down hill, and now, dig into your throttle. Do you hear how the tone is lighter and less stressed. Almost as if it doesn’t have the pressure being built up, or under any pressure overall.
Third, let’s go uphill, and now let’s get moving. Do you hear that. The tone is lower and more deeper, while the frequency is a little slower, and more pronounced.
The finale, let’s go to the mountains. When you get around a corner, and you have a little stretch. Mash the gas pedal into the floor, and let off, and hurry and do the same thing again but with the brake pedal. You about died. I don’t know if those couple little trees, would have prevented you from doing a Thelma and Louse. That was close, be careful. But did you hear the frequency dropped noticeably, and the low grunt tone that was being produced.
Now, go back and repeat all four except for this time throw the family luggage along with your family, and the pets. Don’t forget to bring plenty of food for them, and certainly don’t forget their treats. Did you bring them a few toys, what about a towel or two. They just might need a quick bath. You forgot the cooler, now you got to go back and get the cooler, and stop by the store and fill with ice sandwich items, drinks, and grab a couple drinks for the kids that they don’t get too many of. It’s vacation, and if you don’t brake early and hard enough. It will be their last, and also everyone else in your car.
Do you hear how much lower in tone your engine sounds, and for much more of the time, than previous. That mountain, you had to dig in to keep moving.
See, or shall I say hear.
Now, grab a power drill, remote control vehicle, anything that has an electric motor. For the power drill, as example. Drive a screw into something, that is already drilled. Hear the sound.
Now grab a new sharp bit, and a thick plate of hardened steel. You don’t need armor plating. Goo, hold up you don’t get any lube while you are driving that new bit through that thick piece of steel. Nope, you are going in dry. Make sure you tighten your chuck, don’t want any slipping. Do you hear the sound, not of the bit crying out for even a drop of lube, but listen to the sound of the drill. That is the sound of power.
Feel the drill, and feel the battery. They are hot stuff. See how much more battery life was used.
Go in any industrial setting. Listen to the song of the machinery. Better yet. Look up videos of high current, or high power electric motors starting. That is stationary motors, and a mobile in a ev is certainly not stationary. They are mobile. Maybe a two speed transmission, or a three speed, might help, but it is still going to have to get moving off the line, and that will require power.

Unibody on frame , we used to sort of have some cars like that in australia back in the 70`s , funnily enough they where gm models too , or as we called then holdens :).
It seems the vehicle pay load and range is always going to be a compromise with EV pick ups , theres just no getting around the fact that those batteries weigh a frigging heap , when you consider your fuel for an ice vehicle is actually lighter than water , and even ice engines these days are relatively light with all the alloy used in modern day units .
Unlike the oldies , i can remember as young bloke ( vaguely ) pulling the V8 engine out of a studebaker with a mate , we sat the engine down on its sump on wet grass in the back yard , and we where going to drag the big bugger across out the road , no way baby , they where all cast iron behemoths , that donk wasnt going anywhere , we couldnt move it :) , so it sat there until we dismantled it :) .
Back to the Ute .... sorry truck/pick up , i like it , no fluff , no gimmicks , vinyl ? floor covering , thumbs up .
Maybe the way out for pick ups is a focused hybrid , much smaller battery , decent fuel consumption ?
It will be interesting to see the chev with comparable box trailer test , i suspect the tractor may have been giving the chev an easier time of it wind resistance wise .

Except most of the mid sizers are also heavy ass tanks at 5K lbs empty. And they got less room for the massive amount of Li-on batteries. Here is your 7K lb mid size truck that gets 150 mile range lol. Lets face it, Li-on batteries have been around for car applications since 2000. They are environmentally not friendly, lithium is a rare element and expensive to mine (dirty) and a very heavy element. All the compromises it had in the year 2000 are still with us today. In some applications like cell phones and cars it may be useful. But in heavy body on frame trucks its just stupid. This fade will be short lived I assure you. Mining Li-on is completely stupid. They should invest more in Hydrogen fuel cells as this technology has obviously hit a wall if they resort to putting massive 3K lb batteries. That's just pure insanity. The oems keep packaging this as new tech. Its not. Its been in one form or another for over 20 years. No major breakthroughs. Just heavier more massive batteries that are VERY expensive.

Smaller outfits like Rivian don't have a chance. Don't be a dope and invest in any of these smaller EV companies. Don't think Rivian will be able to raise capital like they did in the past. At some point investors want to see a return. Rivian burn rate on its cash is insane. IN 2022 they lost 6.8 billion. Everything they are doing is not sustainable. Oddly enough, they still outsold ram and ford with combined sales but having owned fords for the last ten years, and having the latest tech, I always noticed Ram interiors were far beyond ford, and chev was far behind them both. Now owning two work trucks, both Chevrolet, I actually am blown away with their quality, feel, and looks of their interior and exterior. They have drastically improved their quality. I am so pleased with my 22 3/4 ton and my 23 half ton. One major problem still is the the 2500hd seats.
