This is absolutely my favorite type of videos, farm work with David. Great job as always!
Thank you for watching.
Andre just setting on his seatbelt, to make it look like it’s buckled . Made me 😂
im glad someone else noticed it lol
Trying to be sneaky. 🤣
Idk why he even bothered, they’re on private land and not on a public roadway.
It looks like he struggled to get it buckled, probably was jammed into the seat
David would be a great addition to TFL truck! Always love watching videos with him. No fluff just tells it how he sees it.
High speed
Low drag
💯🤙🏻😎💪
a good question is which truck will be doing nearly the same amount of work in ten years, WITHOUT several 5 thousand dollar repairs.
Well one truck is already old so you make no sense. That's like saying which lasts longer, a bike made in the 2000s or a brand new mountain bike.
@@StarInfinite00yes the other one is old and yes I see no problem with that! It has already be payed all! And repairs can be done much easier compared to a modern fully loaded with electronics truck.
@@StarInfinite00you really didn’t get the point of his comment lol
ICE wont even be running in 10 years.
Have you seen how cheap 10 year old battery cars are? The way technology keeps developing, nobody wants to buy an old EV with a battery that degraded to half is initial potential and old technology. A 80k diesel for example you can still recover a very significant amount after 10 pr even 15 years.
Always great when you get Andre and David together, especially on the ranch.
David is so old school I love it
I always enjoy David's perspective, and it's clear not everyone views the definition of a "work truck" equally. This truck looks very appealing to me. The only reason I wouldn't consider this a work truck is the price. Cut the price in half, then it's a work truck.
All that said, it's a nice truck. For a lower price, I would consider getting one. Maybe it'll be in my price range as a used vehicle some day.
David tells it like it is! 🤓 Great video, very entertaining. Glad you tested and talked about the generator differences between the Lightning and the Silverado.
Thank you for watching.
David is my homie!! Hell yes! He is "salt of the earth." Most of us don't have Ph.Ds in mechanical engineering, but actually get a dang job done. Period.
I'm similar.... I've done all sorts of jobs from office software life to building houses. In my experience, people with bachelor's degrees that are working in field are very hard workers, just a different type. I've also known very lazy blue collar guys that don't want to work. It's not about degrees or not, it's about work ethic.
Good ol’ boy
💯💪🤙🏻😎
The GMT 400 trucks were awesome and still are. I had a 92 GMC work truck with the 4.3, 5 speed and bare bones except AC and AM/FM
Bought a 92 K1500 stepside
four years ago. Love it, put a starter
And slave cylinder in it. Exhaust, and
been running around since.😊
Until you need to stop from modern highway speeds of 85 and you are still doing 55+ when everyone else is already stationary
David is awesome and as always, Andre is great!
You are too kind.
"Don't tell me it's a work truck!" 🎤 Drop! 😂😂😂😂😂
It is a work truck because it makes a lot of sense for certain fleets. If you know exactly what tasks you are going to need the truck to do, you can buy a truck with the right range and payload to do that job and it will do it day after day with very little maintenance required. The high initial cost can be made up with savings in fuel, maintenance, tax incentives, and depreciation tax write offs, or it may make sense to lease.
Enjoy a hard cold Rocky Mountain winter🤪
My dad is a Michelin man too. Always talking about his damn Michelins that he got put on at the Sam’s club. “You wouldn’t believe how many miles I got out of these Michelins”.
I know dad… I know.
I bought 3 sets of Michelins last year.
He's right though. Toyo when I sold tires was the only ones besides Michelin who averaged getting anything near the rated miles out of a set.
Michelin spends a lot on r&d vs others and won't release a new spec tire unless it's at least 10% better across the board vs the previous tire.
@@4literv6 oh I’m not questioning if he was right or wrong. He just loved to tell everyone about his Michelin tires. 😂
David tells it like a lot of I think farmers see it. Its a great truck, but to get someone to buy the EV worktruck that isnt fleet will be a hard sell
Thank you TFL and Andre, that is an honest review from David. It's a good truck just not for David. My needs are different, I plan to keep my reservation and look forward to actually trying it out myself.
Great video, Andre asking the right questions and the honest real world opinion of David.
I grew up on a farm and you don't have time to drive all the way to town to get a new saw blade. This is a real world situation. We would run the saw and burn our way through the job and put it on the list to pick up another 2 blades when we went back to town. It is great to see you guys actually use the truck and test out the power outlet. I was pretty disappointed when I got my new Silverado and the box outlet was only 400 watt rated. All I could run was a cordless drill battery charger. I do have a small air compressor that I can run off of that bed outlet.
Circ blades are cheap. I always have a variety on hand for the situation. Cause a dull blade is literally a waste of time
Unfortunately it's probably too early in the truck market and I don't think they are designing them right. It just shouldnt be a big nosed truck. Need to see the solid state batteries drop before they become viable for this type of work IMO.
If we get a solid state battery or some great breakthrough in graphene battery technology and manufacturing, that would be game over for ICE vehicles. Maybe in the next 10/15 years from now.
Great video very entertaining, that's a nice truck but I'd be willing to bet it won't be around as long as David's work truck. I just don't see these types of trucks being around 20-30 years.
The reliability and proven longevity is pretty tough to beat with those GMT400 series trucks, arguably some of the best trucks GM has ever made. With that said, mighty big shoes to fill for these modern truck EV trucks.
The lack of user serviceability with this truck as well as vehicles from every other manufacturer will send them to an early grave. The gmt400 series trucks are notorious for providing 30 years and 300-plus thousand miles of service. Then they can be rebuilt and continue to Soldier on. These new vehicles cannot be kept in service economically due to their high level of complication.
Bingo PAL 😊
Love these videos with David. Awesome job TFL team.
David ghost riding his whip! 😂 I enjoyed the vid, thanks for your content and humor!
What are your thoughts on loading dirt or gravel when you have the electrical plugs in the back. Is there a bettter cover available that seals off all the plugs? I can see dirt getting under those flip down covers.
The fact that you have to compare a new truck to an old truck already gives me my answer which one i should have.🤣
Yup, the GMT-400series has set the standard, and I doubt this new truck will provide anywhere near the service life of the old ones.
I love my old 93 GMC sierra pick up truck. Mine is a 350 engine but I do have the 4L 80 E heavy duty transmission with 410s. It will do 80 Easy! It just turned 66,000 miles. It looks brand new because it’s been garaged it’s whole life, but I take a new truck any day of the week but I’ll still keep my old truck. lol
How do you know it will do 80 if it has been garaged its whole life? You have that big of a garage?
Ha ha that’s funny. RV garage !
David is such a cool old hand, and tells it like it is. Great video, guys!
Honest assessment from David...much appreciated.
Andre looks like he did not have fun doing manual labor 🤣🤣
I always like David's common sense perspective on things. The vibrating seat backup warning made me laugh... David was like whats happening!!!
Andreis Videos r always my favorite videos at TFL
David sums it up beautifully.
Great video testing a truck and showing real work. Best line of entire vid was David’s closing comments!
Great video Andre and team!
17:03 Having your wife volunteer to hook up the trailer is an added benefit.
I think they cut him off a bit at the end there, sounds like he had some more to say haha. Let's see how that EV is holding up in 30 years and what costs it incurred over time....
Way cheaper than the gas/diesel maintenance that’s for sure.
"No chickens were harmed in making this video", they were all dead before they started.
I wish they would update the PowerBoost to allow you to turn off the cab and just run the motor to power the bed plugs, ideally even controlling it through the phone app
That looked like a Peugeot 504 familiale. It’s a popular and fairly reliable taxi in the French influenced developing world.
Great conclusion.
David: great truck. My favorite way to set up a gmt-400 resto-mod (early dash with late seats; 454 tbi)
I like David's commen sense, real work, working man's perspective.
On the positive.. the ~500-600 lb ft of torque vs the much more powerful F150 Lightning, is probably adding much more range for moderately heavy loads.
I like the regenerative braking, and wonder how it compares to a diesel's exhaust brake??
Put an 8 foot bed on it and increase the payload.. might get the attention of alot more consumers.
You’re not allowed to be positive here; you’re only supposed to put down everything new… like they did back when the blue truck was new 🙄😂
I don’t remember the price I paid exactly, but back in 1998 I ordered a GMC 2500 4x4 SLE with extended cab and long bed with automatic transmission and 454 engine. I want to say it was around $30k. It had drum rear brakes, no airbags (because HD trucks back then didn’t have them), cloth seats (they were power though), AM/FM radio with CD player, air conditioning, cruise control, and power windows.
Adjusted for inflation, $79k is equivalent to $42k back then. Is this truck 140% of my old SLE? Yes, and No. I could carry more payload in the SLE but it had no safety tech, brakes weren’t very good, didn’t tow as much, got 12mpg, and absolutely sucked off-road until I added a 6” lift and capable tires. Because it was brand new, I also didn’t want to scratch/dent it, so that “it’s too nice to use as a work truck” argument is true for anything new.
I actually think GM is the first manufacturer to bring us a functional EV truck. The others work, but their limited range kills them for any real-world towing-pulling a boat 110 miles round-trip would be a needless exercise in stress management with all others.
I agree with your assessment on GM's new WT4 truck. So far with what is currently available in truck market, there isn't any other vehicle within the full-size class category that will match the driving range while driving solo or while hauling/towing with a trailer or load out back.
Ford's Lightening has been a disappoint and has not delivered the stated capability as advertised. Part of that problem is, Ford's engineers just incorporated the EV platform and tried to adapt to an already existing chassis intended for a traditional ICE arrangement, which really limited the size and scope of battery pack they could fit within the frame rails.
David is exactly my dang brother. Lawd Have Mercy.
Thumbs up guys, and a tip of the hat to David too.
As away as a great video , I'm not ready for the future. I'll keep my 2019 Chevy 3500HD L5P. Thank you!
the review @ 31:30 was my thought before I watched the other 31:29 of the video. Great video from a real life person.

...."don't tell me it is a work truck!" Best conclusion ever. But then, this is David. Tells it straight. 👍 Don't show me no shovel full of dung💩 and proclaim it is potting soil for the roses. 😉
One of your best episodes
That integrated bed design is gonna get killed as a work truck which ALWAYS beats up the bed
For these ranch video reviews with EV is there an old 220/240v outlet usually used back in the day for old timers arc welding on their equipment? It would be interesting to see how each EV reviewed would charge plugged into older existing outlets. Would they charge at their expected rates? A lot of folks might eventually consider an EV for chores like we now accept the battery chain saws and other tools.
It will charge just fine and at the rate that the circuit is set up for. Most old circuits are set up for at most 30 amps of use, though many were only 24 amps.
Good question; I have a 50 amp rv plug that could be used for that, with the right dongle I suppose.
I like the conclusion but want to know the specifics. I know it's too high tech and fancy but I want to hear his views.
If car companies want all-electric, they have to start somewhere with every type of vehicle. This is a good first stab at a work truck. It will come down in price once the infrastructure and scale comes into play.
David is a badass!! Great video... I'll be frank and honest; the grapple bucket is absolutely a must have!! I borrowed my uncle's to do some storm clean up to use on my old New Holland L180. Oh my gosh... grapple buckets are a game changer!
Like David said, to each his own. If you want one of these? Get one. It's your money (I guess and my tax dollars in incentives, etc.). For me, I will never buy one. Thanks for the video and for having David on.
Thank you for watching.
I did hotshot moving auto parts around the city one summer and did about 300 miles a day, hardly made any money after gas but was a cool job. Be a neat truck for people in a particular businesses like that but man the engineering cost need to come down.
Engineering costs will come down with volume. Trick is getting enough volume to make financial sense. This type of truck will at least make financial sense for those who haul a good amount locally and can charge at home at night. I'm sad they didn't specify how heavy the loaded trailer was, and what the round trip end efficiency was.
@@juliuscheng5788 Well in the video, the empty curb weight of the WT4 was around 8,500 pounds, and the scales at the dumps showed the total combined weight of 14,000 pounds (truck & trailer), simple deduction will give you an approximation of the loaded trailer.
For this particular video, I don't believe TFL was trying to make this a fully inclusive test, rather just to have farmer David give his first impressions of Chevy's new truck offering.
Never thought I’d see David “ghost ride” his whip😳😂😂😂……..😏👈🏽
Nice 404 wagon in the back
I can’t figure out why they aren’t going hybrid on trucks. I wish this made more sense but it just doesn’t. If your a service technician you might not drive long distances but you may still have many stops and exceed the battery capacity.
They are getting closer, but I’m not trading in my High Country just yet. I actually prefer the 3.0 diesel.
As an owner of hybrids in the past and now an EV truck, I can personally say I'll never go back to even hybrids. The day to day of an EV is so dead simple and pleasant. I haven't brought an EV in for service once while my hybrid still required regular oil changes, which was at least a few times a year.
@@GadgetMan777
I understand, but it’s all about applications. It wouldn’t take much of a conventional motor or even hydrogen to boost the Achilles’ heel of EVs which is range with a load.
David speaking on my behalf, which I believe is the truth. It's not a work truck. But, if you have the spending power, by all means.....
Because a sudden vibration in the seat during a (possibly) stressful situation isn't going to make some drivers flinch🤦
His sarcasm with new is hilarious.
Looks good. But practically speaking I can't see it lasting with all the demands of a work truck. Driving down a dust filled dirt road with the windows open. All the dust and dirt on those screens. the high cost of maintenance, the scarcity of charging stations, etc. In some cases it would be better than ICE but that would be the minority.
Hey TFL gotta question …
Could you conceivably add a roof rack to this truck and add a couple solar panels to charge while driving around or just plain recharging full time ??
This would have to be integrated into the software of the truck as well. It could have a solar tonneau cover. It would add just a little energy.
Covering the entire truck with solar might net maybe 500 watts on average, so you'd take weeks just to charge a 200+ kWh battery.
No, because it won't go into drive while charging. You'd be better off packing in 2000 watts of fold out panels and a small inverter battery to plug in and trickle charge at 10-12 amps. It's not a great portable solution tho but the good thing about EV trucks is they don't care where the power comes from so you could pack in a propane generator if you want for very remote use. Lots of options.
No. It takes more voltage than solar can output to charge. It's part of the plan. Keep you on the hook for fuel. No free fuel allowed.
For comparison, that old GMC is over 30 years old likely on the same engine & transmission, & probably could go 30 years more. Can any EV do that?
Undoubtedly.
Properly maintained electrical parts? Sure. Heck, looking around there are tons of diesel-electric locomotives that were built in the 1970's floating around.
The bigger question is the battery - though with a pack this large, you could still have a significantly usable range (say, 300 miles) on the original pack, even after 30 years of use. I think there's information from Tesla's packs that suggest batteries lose about 1% of their rated capacity per year on average.
GM states the battery duty cycle is good for 250k Tesla says its battery packs at the 250k mile mark are between 10 to 15% range loss
@juliuscheng5788 Those diesel electric locomotives are still functioning for two reasons. One, they were built on an industrial scale intended to provide service for decades, and two, they are not full of unnecessary Electronics. New automobiles are flawed on both accounts. This makes them highly unreliable in the long-term and unreasonable expensive to fix, which will result in them having a comparatively short service life. Additionally, battery technology is still not where it needs to be. Battery Service lives tend to vary considerably, and even the cheapest replacements are five Grand, with some of them running over $20,000.
@@floridagunrat1625 unnecessary electronics? What difference is there between a locomotive's powertrain and a EV's that would be "unnecessary"?
Unless you really think all the infotainment features cars have somehow affect powertrain reliability.
And why would you think an automobile's electric motors wouldn't be reliable over 100-200k miles?
Beyond that, the point of mass production is to reduce costs.
Andre you do such a great job of making your videos, they are just what we need to understand what we are looking at. Yes, The dump has the worst smell to it! 🤮
I was waiting for this video
It would be awesome to see how the new EV truck compares to the old Ford conversion EV truck
Here just for David!
So, how is this Avalanche type bed going to work out for work? I don't see a lumber/ladder rack fitting and the bed is only 5'11". Also, it's not a separate bed that could be removed to fit a flatbed or service body. Obviously not really a work truck
My thoughts exactly.
I believe the work truck version doesn't have the Avalanche opening into the cab like the consumer version does.
I wasn't talking about opening. I'm talking about shape at the back of cab that would make any sort of rack very difficult
@@throttleissues9359 - I would bet someone will be making a number of enhancements if not GM providing them, certainly after market companies will. How can I be so certain of this? The truck will sell well among EV trucks if for no other reason than the fact that it has more range than anything else to this point in time. That is a big selling point.
I hope they switch to a more traditional bed for the next gen.
Seems like a match would have been the best tool for that cleanup...
I love the NRA sticker in the back window.... Doritos & Beer..... that is my lunch & dinner.... I did not know they had a crawl gear... this is too cool....

@@Jeddin so that lowers the $80,000 price to just under $70,000. Yeah, no I don't think so!
@@floridagunrat1625 you’re not wrong. It’s massively overpriced. But I think they priced it that way for a reason. How far into the future do you guys think it will be until solar panels are Integrated into e.v.s? You could recoup some energy on long trips. Also until wireless charging pads are available in personal garages? It would more than likely take forever, but cool to think about.
Solar panels cost money, but only give you about a mile of range. These electric trucks use TONS of energy.
@@cliffordmontana4562 somethings better than nothing.
The big issue here not talked about is the battery pack degrading depletion. These are stupidly expensive to replace when the time comes!

I hate that new trucks have so much tech in them. Give us an engine, 4x4, an A/C, heater, power windows, power locks, am/fm/bluetooth radio, automatic transmission, some cup holders, and make it $15,000 so we can afford work trucks again. That said, the convenience of a back up camera to back up to a trailer without an extra person or having to jump out and check a couple times, is worth adding that too.
Okay I'll be 100 percent honest before even watching the rest of the video and say NO on price ALONE... that goes for practically any new truck too, 30k+ for a bare bones nothing special truck is out of this world dude, which unfortunately seems to be the norm now
Well my ram 2500 was 68 and it’s not diesel not all fancy I got a backup camera and 4 wheel drive that’s about it left the lot was 77 with Tax an Interest
Some jobs pay better than others :)
While I’ll agree truck prices are outrageous for anyone but higher class. You gotta realize a “bare bones” truck today compared to 20 years ago is more equipped than a fully loaded truck of its time. All that technology and engineering adds up. Nobody asked for all this technology in base models but with the increased safety standards it’s mandatory

Why the prices have gone crazy on vehicles especially trucks the last few years
@@zacherydrzik7122 it begining to sound like cheap work vehicles with manual windows and locks are illegal.
David spot on.
The price is still ridiculous 🙄
LOL “7.2KWH” - cant even run a small saw… is this a prank??
A 110 volt outlet is still limited to 15-20 amps. An old saw jammed up results in a locked rotor condition and that current can spike to 40 amps momentarily, causing the breaker to trip. Older magnetic breakers are more tolerant of that kind of dirty load, newer ones are more sensitive, and you can have the same thing happen in your house on a Siemens, Eaton, Cutler-Hammer, pick your favorite brand of breaker.
@@steinwaymodelb makes sense. But the way they r advertising it is that you can use it to power your house on a power outtage. So like i guess you could run a coffee maker which is cool BUT so can my 30 year old truck with a small inverter…

I assume GM will do something like the Lightning and come out with an integrated solution for your house to connect the CCS/J1772 Port directly into your service box, allowing the vehicle to output a considerably large amount, like plugging in a generator to your generator port on your box.
